We were visiting the Shawnee Wine Trail in Southern Illinois. The problem is that all the local restaurants close at 2 or 3 in the afternoon. After getting some recommendations we headed down to Anna to The Brick House Grill. The Dinner salad was very good. The Reuben came highly recommend and was very tasty. I had the Shrimp and Grits... it didn't come with a side so for what I paid itcwas a little pricey. It was good just pricey!! I always have to get a Bread Pudding if they offer one. I hadn't been back in four years and was quite happy with a last minute decision to land at the Brick House grill. I went with two Italians visiting us and we were all so pleased with the linguine with mushrooms, basil olive oil and chicken. The staff was welcoming and most gracious even at the late hour and a party of nine people. The appetizer included roasted garlic, bell pepper and cheese paired with a hot bread. Definitely returning. So good Happy to drive 25 minutes to get a real taste of modern Italian food that was served with generous portions. read more

We ate at the Brick House Grill the second night during our visit to Anna in hopes for better and quicker service ... disappointed! Thursday night was less busy and took a lot longer than expected. Guess you have to be a local regular customer to get prompt service. Crab cakes are far from excellent, lots of bread filler, very little crab. Ribeye sandwich was ok last night, soup was good. Overall quality of food is ok, nothing super special. (The little garlic bread was good) If you decide to go, be prepared for a long wait before being served your dinner, and ask for refills on your drink when dinner arrives and you may get it before you leave. BTW, very unprofessional and disrespectful when asking for your check and having to wait 15 minutes while you're chatting with another customer. Rude. read more

Can't really speak on the food as we didn't get any. Made reservations about 3 weeks prior to Valentine's weekend. We get there at 5:55 for our 6 on reservation. Some one must've dropped the ball on recording it. I showed them the messages where it was confirmed. So they sat us at a tiny table right by the door where it is freezing with no one else instead of the room where it is warm and romantic. Food was Ok, it may have been great but it was pretty hot inside, so I was only thinking about that. Staff was friendly and made my kids feel like they were truly welcome. It's 4 stars because it's one of the nicer places in Anna, and maybe it's the nicest, but I haven't eaten at all of them. It is a small town eatery with a modern feel, but don't go expecting them to compete with the best Chicago or Milan has to offer, they don't, and aren't trying to. Moderately priced. I grew up in Anna-Jonesboro, but have lived elsewhere for 45 years, including New York City, Chicago, Denver, and Sacramento. That's not to brag, but to indicate my tastes have been modified since leaving my roots. So I was very pleased to find on a recent visit that my hometown has a restaurant that can compare to the best urban centers of America. My initial impression was lukewarm, as the decor is a little spartan and the large rooms lack intimacy and make for a slightly noisy atmosphere. But the service and the menu soon warmed my heart. The dinner salad with pine nuts and feta was delightful. My entree was the salmon with a dill sauce served on a bed of risotto. (It was supposed to have included asparagus, but in late October that may be hard to come by.) The salmon juicy and perfectly prepared, as was the dill sauce. The risotto looked a little dryed out, but he taste was excellent. Having lived in California I'm a bit of a wine snob. I asked for a merlot. The server said that if I liked dry reds, she recommended a local wine, Chambourcin, from Owl Creek Vineyard, in Cobden. Not expecting much , I agreed. (After all, Illinois does lack the dry Mediterranean climate that is conducive to making great wines.) But I was pleasantly surprised. The wine was sweeter than I prefer, but it did have complex fruity favors that complemented the meal. I'm looking forward to my next visit. read more

Unfortunately our expectations of southern hospitality were crushed as soon as we entered this restaurant . Although I am from out of town , my mother and 2 brothers live the area. I along with my husband , sister , son , daughter in law 2 grandsons and granddaughter decided on this restaurant for dinner after traveling 7 hours to get Anna. As soon as we entered , the gentleman ( I'm guessing he was the host) stopped in his tracks and looked us over and after an awkward moment asked us if we had reservations . We said no and asked if we needed them to dine there for the evening . He didn't acknowledge the question and went over to the bar and proceeded to whisper to the patrons and the bartender while snickering. Still awkwardness and we were all just standing there very uneasy. But knowing how limited the eating establishments are in Anna we stayed . He finally came back to seat us still not pleased with the situation . I thought maybe it was because of the 3 children with us but after looking around I saw several other little children there. We were dressed nicely , we were very pleasant . It was just unbelievable how rude these people were . It seemed like they were put out by our business. After the old gentleman seated us he brought back an alcohol menu and handed it to my husband telling him he would need it with the kids . He might have thought it was funny but it certainly was not due to the fact that he already prejudged us and the children . Never gave them a chance . Unbelievable for an establishment that obviously is mediocre on all aspects . We were just so shocked . Next visit to Anna will not include a visit to this place. And then to actually find out after we left that the old man is a friend of my brother who lives in the area. Despite starting out stay this way, the rest of our stay was very nice . read more

We went to the Brick House Grill in Anna the night before the SIU graduation in May 2012. Now you may be thinking it was packed and hectic due to graduation, but no, it was not and I'm thinking I may now know why. We arrived at about 6:30 and I wasn't sure they were open as there were only about 6 people in side eating. By the time we left another 6 came in so maybe they were going to get busy? Service was slow and poor. After ordering our drinks, it took them 5 minutes to bring them. How hard is a Jack and Coke with a crowd of 8 in the place? We ordered the Grilled Shrimp appetizer that had 3 sauces with it. When our waitress brought it, she sat in on the table and kept walking. I had to finally get up and go get her (remember 8 customers - 3 of them are us) and have her come and tell us which sauce was which as we had no idea. They had a steak special that night so I ordered it. What cut I receive, I'm not sure. It was seasoned and cooked ok, that wasn't the problem. The problem was that it was a fatty, gristlely and as tough as I've ever seen. I don't know where they got their steak, but I would have been embarrassed to serve it. The other plates (Salmon Florentine and Pork Chops) were fine so I suppose 2 plates out of 3 isn't too bad. Obviously Anna IL isn't the largest city and the only other restaurants in Anna are fast food, Mexican and Chinese, but I really think they could have done better. My teenage son and I son go down to this area every fall for the annual snake migration. Apparently this restaurant has been in business for 6 years but this was the first time we noticed it passing through downtown Anna. So last Saturday night we thought we'd give it a try. At first, it was hard to tell if the place was open as it looks dark from the street and the only dining area you can see appears to be a dark room. When you enter, you walk into a charming bar area with a standard long bar but adjacent to that is a comfortable looking little room with a couch and some comfy chairs that would look more at home at a coffee shop perhaps. But I could certainly see enjoying a drink there! We were guided to a smallish backroom with a rustic decor that included what appeared to be some local artwork for sale. Some of the pieces were pretty nice. The menu looked rather upscale for small town America in terms of the descriptions of the entrees yet the prices were reasonable. My son ordered the linguine which came with artichokes, spinach, grape tomatoes, portobello mushrooms which he declared the best thing he'd eaten in days. I tried the special which was cheesy grist with grilled shrimp, bacon and scallions. I'm not much of a grits person but I've only had the breakfast version. The waitress encouraged me to give this dish a try and it was truly terrific. I enjoyed a nice local dark beer with my meal and for dessert had their bread pudding. It too was delicious and I enjoyed the fact that it wasn't the behemoth portion that you see in so many places. To wrap it up, we were beyond pleased. This has to be the best place to eat not only in Anna-Jonesboro but perhaps the greater Carbondale area (and we know the area pretty well). read more

You will also like the local artwork adorning the walls, and they are for sale. This is a really nice find in 'real' southern Illinois. We were staying near Anna for a get-away weekend. Went to Brickhouse our first night in town and had such a good experience the first night that we went back the second night as well. The food was delicious, the wine and beer selections, despite not being very expansive, were quite good. The bartender Scott was warm and friendly and even remembered our names. My husband & I drove through Anna, Il on the 44th anniversary of the day we fell in love. Paused our road trip to celebrate. Bought books in a thrift store, & asked if proprietor could recommend a local restaurant. "Try the Grill, it's next door." What. A. Find. What looked like original art hung on the walls, vaguely bohemian. But you want to know about the food. That's the real ticket! Grilled shrimp appetizer - spiced zestily, with 3 sauces on plate to dip. Roasted pepper soup - amazing, with a bite! Tomatoes, basil, artichoke hearts & garlic sauteed in olive oil & tossed with linguini, topped with the tenderest grilled chicken breast I have been served outside of my own kitchen.
