This little café is tucked away downtown just off 4th Avenue. The sidewalk art out front gives it a fun and welcoming feel. We stopped in midmorning on a Saturday, and it was busy with a mix of locals and students. The counter staff was friendly and helpful. The pastry case made it tough to choose, but we went with a Pumpkin Cheesecake Cruffin, Maple Pecan Blondie, BLT Croissant, and coffee. Everything was fresh and tasty. They also sell loaves of bread and other baked goods to take home. The staff was warm and polite, and even those working behind the counter who weren't serving us took a moment to say thanks for coming in. Will definitely be visiting again. read more

After seeing the reviews I thought the food was goin to be really good. What I found is that the what this place is good at is attracting people who share the same beliefs with them and all leave 5 star reviews regardless of the food quality. I came in open minded and was very disappointed with the taste and texture of the food here. There were too many under tones of politics for my liking. But the main thing is the food is not good. I'd say at best average. I'd rather go to a Dunkin Donuts. read more

True confession: I don't drink coffee, so naturally you might think it's weird that I went here. However this place is great even without having to drink the coffee. I think the environment is great and the staff was very friendly. The food was also very great, I'm pretty sure they made it homemade that morning but I can't be sure. The only reason this isn't 5 stars for me is because the seating is a little small and when I went there the place got crowded pretty fast while I was waiting in the line with my friends. read more

This is my third time at Brick Oven, and I overall love it here. The ambience is great, the food is fantastic, but I've just been let down by their coffee today...twice in one visit. If you want a proper espresso drink, latte in this instance in the picture, there should be a layer of smooth crema and about one to 1.5 inch of smooth milk foam to compliment. This first one I got had zero foam and was just thin as all get out. And I NEVER send back drinks, but it just wasn't right. The cashier very kindly took it back and put in a remake for me, and then this is what comes out. Way too much foam now and just bubbly "soap suds" foam from the milk. Just disappointing because I've had properly made espresso here before. Just a bad day for this barista I guess or needs more training. Just want to make people are aware before they spend their money on the coffee. Overall a truly great place though, just a bad day I guess. read more

Amazing little bakery and breakfast joint! Craft coffee and homemade baked good are their specialty and everything looked and smelled amazing. The breakfast danish was something I've never had before and was the perfect savory breakfast treat! I would recommend getting it warmed up if your goi g to eat it there! The vanilla cruffin had a great filling and it was a mixed between a croissant and a muffin, filled with vanilla creme. Texture of a croissant in the shape of a muffin. I really liked this place! When traveling, I often search for a good local bakery or pastry shop, and on this trip to Bismarck, I found Brick Oven Bakery (as opposed to eating the bland free breakfast food at our hotel). I went on a Saturday morning, and it was busy with a line, which is always a good sign of quality & taste. The staff gets people through quickly and in a friendly manner. Based on memory, I feel like there were about 6-8 tables up front if you wanted to dine-in, and I think there was sidewalk seating too (which was not applicable on that cool late October morning). I bought several items including some pumpkin cruffins, several danishes (fruit, apple, lemon) and a cinnamon twist. All were enjoyed by our group. If you are ever in Bismarck, make the effort to go downtown as that it where you'll find most of the best local food & drink options. And even if you are staying north of I-94 like I was, it's only a 10 minute drive to downtown, if even that. read more

BRICK OVEN!!! If I could have their s'mores iced coffee EVERY SINGLE DAY I'd be a happy camper! I love their breakfast sandwich. I always get it if I go in there. Their desserts/pastries are so delicious too. My only ding from being a 5 star rating is that the wait & the availability of the items is always a hit & miss. Some days the wait is over 25-30 minutes & no seating available if there's a wait that long. The availability of the items is also hit or miss. If I only go there for my coffee & sandwich the sandwich might not be available if I don't get their early. Etc. the deliciousness & me absolutely loving this place is what makes it 4 stars not 3. A bismarck must! This place has the best pastries in town. I had the best danish of my life! I stop In a few times a month and the place is always packed, so make sure you get there early if you want options. The coffees are pretty great too and the service is next to none. Recently they added a drive thru window which I haven't tried, but I see cars lined up every time I go. You can tell the product is prepared with a lot of thought and the ingredients are at the peak of freshness. My favorite pastry place in North Dakota. read more

This place is amazing. Likely the best bakery I have ever been to. I got a latte & ham and cheese croissant. It was so good I ended up getting another before I left. Wow I cannot recommend it enough. This restaurant is use to and expects high volume so the people assisting the customers are extridinarily rude. But the worst part this morning was while in line you get to see all the flies gathering on the blueberry scones and famished. They really need to invest in screens. Absolutely disgusting. What an amazing little bakery this is! I am only passing through Bismarck, and I think it would be hard to give any other restaurants a chance the next time I'm here. As soon as you walk in the door, you feel like you've left not only North Dakota, but America as well. The French music playing, exposed red brick walls, and old hardwood floors remind me of the cafes I've eaten at in Paris. When I got to the counter I was greeted with a smile, and ordered a hot americano, along with a BLT on buttered croissant. The americano was ready shortly after ordering, and my sandwich just another minute later. The croissant was of course fresh, flaky, and buttery. All ingredients were fresh and looked top quality. The americano was great. I stayed after eating for as long as my schedule would allow. I am so pleased to find a place so great in a small town in the middle of North Dakota! read more

In Bismarck on Sunday...where to get something to eat... Since so many places were closed on Sunday, we happened upon this place, and so glad we did! While in line, we met a couple who highly recommended the place and for myself, I always prefer local business over any chain! Ordered coffee and breakfast croissants that were really tasty and they were served really fast. The owners work super hard to provide a comfortable place for people to eat and hang out in spite of the construction zone in front of their shop. I hope that they continue to be successful. read more

Super, super good! We got there about half an hour before close so they were out of everything but the peanut butter tart. My friend and I shared it. She said the bacon was great. I thought the tart and peanut butter filling were very good and she agreed. Hope to return when there are more choices! This seems like an excellent bakery! read more

This spot is a treasure! Their pastry is beautiful and flakey, their service was really good, and I love that they have a drive-thru window so we can stay safe during the pandemic. Definitely try the cinnamon swirl, what a joy. Also like the mugs/stickers they sell there. read more

Oh it was so funny, we all had a great laugh! He went on to say he'd be happy to put some veggies on a sandwich for me if I wanted. We did ask how he came to North Dakota and he explained it was because of the hurricane in Puerto Rico awhile back. We told him how happy we were he chose Bismarck of all places. It can't be easy! We all left loaded down with bakery boxes and items from the grocery portion of the store. And were all delighted at how amazing their prices were! Seriously - this place has great prices. I got tres leches, a giant slab of the most amazing vanilla cake, a cup of what tasted like horchata that was a cross between pudding/jello in texture, and a cork screw shaped pastry filled with bavarian cream that I've seen reviewers call a cannoli but he was specific in the fact that it was absolutely not a cannoli. (I believe he called it a quesito but I could be wrong.) The owner also stressed that the desserts in the case change in variety daily so what may be there one day won't be there the next. All in all - this business is fantastic in every way (right down to the fact that the room was absolutely spotless and sparkling clean) and we will be back next time we are in Bismarck! Please turn out and support this wonderful new business!

For entrées, our table had the breaded walleye, the Bolognese pasta, and the Porchetta. The walleye and Bolognese were outstanding, but unfortunately the Porchetta was a big letdown. The skin was chewy rather than crisp, with a thick layer of unrendered fat beneath it, and most concerning, it still had visible pig hair. I was expecting the classic combination of crackling skin, melting fat, and tender pork, but instead it was oddly undercooked on the outside, dry inside, and after biting into hair, I really lost my appetite for it. We finished with tiramisu and a torte, and both desserts were excellent -- a strong way to end the meal. Overall, Anima Cucina has a lot going for it: charming atmosphere, friendly staff, great starters, and standout entrées (other than the Porchetta). I'd happily return for the appetizers, pasta, fish, and desserts, but I'd avoid the Porchetta based on my experience.
