After an 8 hour drive to our hotel in Alpine we called to make sure Brick Vault was open since it was Xmas day. They were, so we got back in the car and drove to Marathon. Absolutely worth it! Ordered the 3 meat plate with brisket, pork ribs, and jalapeno sausage with green chili mac-n-cheese and beans for sides. Also opted for the bread/pickles/onions/jalapenos. All of the meats were great. The sausage had just the right texture and little cheesy pockets in it. The brisket also had a hood texture and smoke flavor. The mac-n-cheese was so good I ate it all even though I had pushed it aside so I could try the pie (pie went back to hotel) I would eat there every day while out here if I could. The sweet potato pie had a thick texture that was different but excellent and a good plain crust to let the flavors shine. The banana pudding was also very tasty. Had the Pale and the Stout from the brewery and even growler of the Pale to go . Thanks for being open on Xmas!!! read more

Just wrapped up our 1st trip to Brick and Vault and I was shocked. This is the 1at time in a LONG TIME where I have had real brisket that had the right amount of fat and smoke that really added to the flavor instead of taking over. I am comparing this to Killins, Corkscrew, Franklin's, et AL. The result? Meat that is sweet, meaty and not overly smoked - which seems to be the trend. The run down... Brisket 5 out of 5. Flavourful and sweet without too much fat. Still from with a great pull. Pork ribs 4.5 out of 5. Sweet Sweet meat. Would have liked to work it off the bone a bit but that's just me. Link #1- jalapinio sausage 5 out of 5. No discussion. Link #2 - delicious. Not greasy. Not oversmoky. 5 out of 5 Great side and excellent beer. This is a diamond in the rough. This place is a gem in a Wild Western town, I've had a lot of BBQ in my hay day and this is probably the best I've ever tasted. The pulled pork was insanely tender no sauce even required and I'm a pretty saucy gal typically. We pretty much tried everything, the brisket and home made sausage were also outstanding and perfectly smoked in addition to the green chile Mac and cheese. On our way to Big Bend from San Antonio. Long drive and starving. I was a bit skeptical to try brisket in the middle of nowhere. Oh my gosh was I wrong! This place is amazing! I dare to rate it the best dang brisket I've ever had! Brisket sandwich is on point and the pickled onion is delicious, I ate it on its own. We loved it so much we stopped there again on our way back to San Antonio! The second time around I had the turkey, simply amazing. The potato salad is great and the green chili Mac is to die for. I wish I could have brought back some beer but it was a looong drive home. I did buy a growler for our collection. Food was lukewarm. I asked the cashier to heat the beans and the answer was, it's not possible. Borracho beans tasted cumin. Cabbage slaw was sour. The best bbq that I've ever had. The brisket was the star of the show, the jalepeno cheddar sausage was the perfect amount of heat and smokiness, the Mac and cheese was a little soupy but so tasty with the addition of the chili's, the creamed corn was excellent, and all the deserts were the perfect ending of a perfect meal. This is some of the best BBQ I've ever had. I had the brisket plate with two sides of green chile mac and cheese and borracho beans. The entire meal was Yelp worthy. They have inside and patio dining. I did inside because of the heat. If I'm ever back this way I will definitely eat here again. Try it out. You won't be disappointed. Staying in Marathon to visit Big Bend. Stopped by Brick Vault for dinner once we arrived. Do Not Go Here if you are half hungry! I got the Vaquero sandwich with Borracho pinto beans. I'm kicking myself for snacking on the drive in because I could not eat it all. It was very tasty. I liked the barbecue sauce, rich and flavorful. I could not finish the sandwich so I would have room for the peach cobbler with ice cream (I'm certain it was vanilla bean, but didn't ask). Oh my, the cobbler was about the best I've had. Parts were perfectly caramelized. My wife got the pulled pork sandwich. I think it was pretty good because when I looked over in a couple of seconds later (minutes really), she had already consumed it completely saying, "That was tasty," while eyeing the peach cobbler I could not stuff into my tummy. She of course finished my cobbler and agreed that it was very good. We highly recommend this establishment, which by the way inhabits a former Gulf (1939) filling station on Hwy 290. read more

We left Houston due to Corona to spend a weekend in Marathon. So we picked the Brick Vault Brewery for lunch on Sunday, where we had great BBQ. The brisket was cooked to perfection, the portion was more than I could finish. I shared it with my friends who weren't eating but were salivating. The BBQ sauce was the best I have had in years. On our last day we tried Brick Vault during their soft opening. The food was delicious, we tried the brisket, sausage, turkey, potato salad and macaroni and cheese. They had ran out of their house beer so we didn't get a chance to try it but we enjoyed our meal, the location service! The prices were decent considering you're in the middle of nowhere, I was pleasantly surprised that they weren't overly inflated. If you're passing by, this is definitely a must try! read more

This is an oasis! We hiked our last day at Big Bend and left late afternoon, found this gem at about 5 p.m. Everything we had was made in house and amazing. The homemade smoked sausage was the best we've ever tasted and we tried their potato salad, green beans and fresh homemade pickle slices. My mouth is still happy a day later! Then there was the beer...wow! We sampled 6 different brews, and they were all great. Hard to pick which to order, we stuck around for a couple of hours and ea drank a different one, shared between us and visited. This is worth including in any plans to travel to the area even if it means a major detour to enjoy!! read more
