15 weeks ago we had to gurney our King Shepherd, Cairo in to Dr. Valerio at Bridger Veterinary. At 10.5 years old, he suddenly couldn't walk. After his non cancerous granuloma was discovered on his MRI, Dr. Valerio suggested spinal surgery to remove the growth that was compressing his spine. There aren't words to express how incredibly grateful I am for this team, this hospital and this surgeon. From having to be cathetered, gurnied, and carried with a harness to walking freely, my boy has surpassed our expectations! I have mixed feelings writing this review. On one hand, I am incredibly grateful that my dog's emergency surgery was successful, and she is now recovering well with no post-operative complications. The outcome was the best I could have hoped for, and I'm thankful for the veterinarian who ultimately performed the procedure and quite literally saved her life. However, the experience leading up to that point was deeply concerning. My dog was brought in with a closed pyometra--a life-threatening condition--and was understandably in a great deal of distress. She was acting aggressively due to the pain, fear, and severity of her condition. Unfortunately, the initial emergency veterinarian who saw her appeared to lack the patience and compassion you'd expect from someone in this profession. I was shocked when it seemed she was on the verge of turning my dog away due to her behavior. Thankfully, another veterinarian stepped in, took the time to calm my dog, and confirmed the diagnosis. He performed the emergency surgery, which he later told me had to happen that day--waiting even one more day would have resulted in sepsis and likely death. To that second veterinarian: thank you. Your professionalism and quick action made all the difference. I'll update this review with your name to give credit where it's due. To other pet owners: please be aware that depending on who is on duty, your pet may not receive the same level of patience or understanding if they present with aggressive behavior due to pain or stress. We were camping in the Bozeman area and were awoken by our dog vomiting at 3am. Upon a closer look, we noticed blood in our dogs vomit. Being away from our local vet in Helena, I googled for an Emergency Vet. Bridger was at the top of the search results. I called and spoke to a LVT who was very helpful and recommended that I bring our dog in immediately. We arrived at the clinic around 3:30am and were greeted by 2 LVTs and Doctor Kamm. They were incredibly clear with communicating the issues that they found and Dr. Kamm sat down with us and explained what was happening and treatment options. My wife and I couldn't be more pleased with the care, compassion and hospitality we were shown (especially at 3:30 in the morning). I called to ask about pricing for potential procedures we might expect, to make sure we can actually afford to come in (do we need thousands, ten thousands, etc?), and the receptionist was rude and refused to give me any pricing, she just kept saying "we don't do consults over the phone you have to come in" - I wasn't asking for care or an up front quote, just ballpark pricing on potential procedures like an MRI and drawing fluids. (Their website literally says "Please call us to discuss expense, as it is our goal to keep cost affordable for our pet families.") This isn't something I've ever had an issue getting over the phone from other specialists. read more

Last week I had to bring my 2 cats and dog here for consuming vitamin D. It was around 5pm and so it was too late to go to my normal vet. My first red flag with this place was that they made me call animal poison control and pay for a consult over the phone because the vets at BVS are apparently incapable of using their resources to make a treatment plan. (my normal vet texted me the medications they had researched the cats would need which turned out to be exactly the same as the treatment plan poison control gave, but BVS wouldn't use what my vet said) Next, once a treatment plan was made, I urged them to get my cats going first because they were the ones who were likely to have eaten more than my dog and my dog also is 5x their size. My concerns were brushed off, and they took my dog back first because the dog didn't need to stay overnight. We waited in a room with our cats for over an hour. We arrived at 5pm and left at 8:30. The following day, I called at 8am to see how my cats were doing and was told they were good and a vet would call me soon. I got antsy and called again at 11am after not hearing anything and was told they were dealing with a separate emergency. I didn't receive a call until 2:45pm and the vet told me the cats were doing well but they had been UNABLE to give the medication poison control had recommended. I asked why they didn't just force feed the meds like I have had to do in the past and they said they didn't want to stress them out. They were at the vet hooked up to an IV, they were already stressed, might as well make sure they are getting the correct treatment. I received little communication about their bloodwork. Actually, they had bloodwork drawn on 1/28 and they forgot to tell me the results were abnormal until 2/5. I had already gone to my normal vet and gotten their blood rechecked twice since then. Luckily my cats are fine, but it was a horrible experience not trusting the care I put my cats in. It is unfortunate that they are the only emergency vet in this area and I hope to never have to use them again. read more

I was referred here from our local vet. My dog stopped eating and I couldn't figure out why. We initially did x-rays, then an ultra sound, and lastly exploratory surgery. It turned out that my dog has lymphoma. I worked with several doctors on staff including Dr. Haugland, Dr. Culver, Dr. Owen, and Dr. Carlsten. All the doctors and staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. It felt comforting knowing my dog, Garrison, was receiving the best care possible. Our sweet, VERY Loved, 1 1/2 year old Rat Terrier was attacked last week by a large dog, bit in the neck and shaken very hard and promptly starting coughing up blood and had labored breathing. To make a long story short, after wasted vet visits to other offices, we drove over 6 hours to this vet hospital and they saved my dogs life - something no one else could or would do! The staff and the vets here are WONDERFUL and truly care - they kept me updated during his entire stay. Bridger Veterinary Specialists diagnosed and took care of our cherished, sweet boy. He stayed in the hospital, was properly diagnosed and the best care I could have ever hoped for. We drove 6+ hours there and 6+ hours home through 3 snow storms and I would do it all over again. This place is severely understaffed, and we received terrible, life-threatening care because of it. I was referred to Bridger Vet Specialists for an emergency. When I arrived, I waited to talk to a vet for over an hour. When I finally spoke to the vet, she was rushed, rude, and obviously had not looked at my pet's records. The vet said I would receive a call between 8 and 10 am. I never received a call. Instead, I called at 10:30 am and asked for an update. They told me they would call back. Over two hours later, I called again, same response. After my pet was in their care for nearly 20 hours, and I had called 4 different times, I still had no information. When I finally received a call back, the vet told me if I wanted an update sooner, I should have called. She proceeded to give me no information about my pet except "we're keeping him another night." I had to initiate questions about medication, dosage, and blood tests. Because I felt I couldn't trust the information BVS was providing, I went to the clinic to visit my pet. I arrived around 3:00 pm, and the front doors were locked. Another patient had to let me in. The other patient was the only other person in the lobby, and she said she came in for an emergency and had also been left waiting. Finally, a tech came out to help us. This poor tech was covering receptionist duties as well as giving updates that the vet couldn't get to. The next day, I was told that I would receive an update between 11:00 and noon. Again, I never received a call. Over the next few hours, I called twice without talking to a vet or getting a call back. Once I finally received a call from the vet on staff that day, she too hadn't looked at my pet's records. She re-asked the same basic questions and didn't know when medication was administered or even when his illness was diagnosed. I went to the clinic again, and that same vet asked the same basic questions a second time. She had to ask multiple times when my pet was admitted and why - not comforting questions when this person was supposed to be caring for my pet for the last 10+ hours. Later, a tech came in and admitted there was confusion about the timing and seriousness of my pet's diagnosis. Because they didn't review my pet's previous medication and dosages, they over-medicated my pet. This caused his blood sugar to drop dangerously low. This was potentially fatal and was completely avoidable. Ultimately, my pet had to stay in the ER for 12 additional hours - all because of poor communication and inadequate record keeping by BVS staff. The understaffing at this place is astonishing. These techs are overworked and don't even have a chance to do their jobs well. Not only was the communication awful, but the vets were unreliable and, frankly, dangerous. I paid a premium price for premium care, however, I received the worst care I've ever experienced. read more

I was a walk in for a pet that had a seed in her ear. They warned me it might be a wait but they got me into a room relatively quickly and I didn't have to wait long to be seen. Great emergency vet! We got in right away and the vet was able to diagnose the problem (cellulitis in his paw). He was feeling so much better in 24 hours with antibiotics and some other treatments. More expensive than our normal vet, but I think that's to be expected. read more

We were sent to Bridger Veterinary specialists/PETS after our 6 1/2 month old Labrador puppy ingested a fish hook. I cannot thank all of the techs, and Dr. Jackson for taking such amazing care of our puppy. Since we were visiting the Bozeman area, and were on our way back home to California, they provided continuous status updates in regards to how our puppy was doing intra-operatively, and realistic time frames so we could plan our trip accordingly. After her surgery was complete and the fish hook was retrieved, the entire process of keeping her overnight was seamless and we felt at ease knowing she would be closely monitored and tended to. Since I myself work in the Emergency Department as a registered nurse, I was extremely impressed by the wealth of knowledge exhibited by the technicians from the time we arrived, to the time of discharge. I have spent quite a bit of time with the BVS team over the past couple months. My one very special 6-year-old terrier was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in June. She was referred to BVS oncology team led my Dr. Carlsten for treatment. They recommended she have her lymph node removed and recommended a course of chemo. I was nothing short of crushed by the news and diagnosis, and very raw when I showed up for Lou's treatment. Dr. Carlsten and her team are angels. If that sounds cheesy, you'd have to meet them. They took the time with me to be sure I understood everything that I was committing to, and have created a support system through the entire process. I often worry about being an overbearing puppy mom. Every time I call, they are sure to get back to me answering any questions, and assuring me that Ive not been too cautious. Without them, I'd be lost but I truly feel that in this situation, Lou's oncology team and her surgical team are giving her the best care on the planet. Lou is battling a pretty serious cancer and she seems just like herself. Every minute I get to spend with her is a blessing and I couldn't be more grateful to have their care backing me up. It's worth noting that I trust pretty much no one with my pups. And - if that wasn't enough, I recently got a new puppy who ended up with a diaphragmatic hernia. My primary care vets called BVS for an emergency surgery and rushed him in - 20 minutes later (the time of the commute between my PC vet and BVS), they had him on the table and were ready to operate. Dr. Jackson came out, informed me of what was going on, what the surgery entailed - and the risks. They have been upfront with the costs with me every step of the way - which can be daunting with vet bills. About 90 minutes after my puppy, Finn started surgery, he was out and I heard from Dr. Jackson that he survived a very touch and go situation. Finn is now home and has a chance at life thanks to the skill of the BVS team. I should note that when the oncology team heard that Finn was mine - they all chipped in giving him extra love, and when he was returned to me, came out to let me know how glad they were he made it. I wrote a note to the practice after all this saying that what they do with science is really skillful and amazing. They are true professionals. But what is remarkable is how much they love their patients - both canine and human. I am a very tough, diligent customer and BVS is among the best group of not only vets, but human beings I've ever worked with. You and your pets will be in excellent hands with this team. I have dealt very closely with the Bridger Veterinary Specialists team. All I can say is... this team has some of the very best people in the world on it! There are times that I literally question if Dr. Carlsten (oncology) is a real-life angel lol. Brittni and Kaitlyn are beyond wonderful as well. They did such wonderful things, like spending extra time with my Boy and showering him with their extra care, and I am well aware that they did not have to do this. Their love and kindness really show! This has been the toughest time in me and Rocko's life and these sweet, wonderful people have added so much light, goodness, and care to such a hard time. They are always professional and I trust them with my baby...which is saying a lot because I am overly careful with who I trust with him. We can only thank the Lord for this wonderful team and for their dedication and care for my baby Rocko! Dr. Carlsten always goes out of her way to take time to speak with us and really just care for us... and she doesn't have to do this. She is so sincere. Also, Dr. Wheeler performed surgery on the spleen, and the surgical site, and just surgery overall, was performed with precision and attention-to-detail...
