The ladies running the counter are nice and leave you to look on your own, but they're there if you need them. They claim to be a new and used bookstore. I didn't see any used books mixed into where I was looking, which meant all prices were normal for a new bookstore. Overall a wonderful visit and a great local bookstore!

You're immersed in the sweet perfume of books as soon as you walk in. There are piles upon piles,…read morean improbably large number crammed into this small bookstore, the cacophony recalling a wild, lushly overgrown garden -- or perhaps a cheerier version of the bookstore in "The Neverending Story." It's just (dis)organized enough to maximize your browsing enjoyment. You stumble across unexpected delights in the many nooks and crannies! But if you're looking for a specific something, the kind owners are immediately there to assist... and expound upon similar reads you might enjoy. They're like living, breathing Spotify playlist curators for books. Good ones. Tempest also carries puzzles and a massive selection of movies on DVD. What's on display in the store is only the tip of the iceberg. The rest of the iceberg lives in the owners' garage, we're told -- but they're happy to dig out whatever you request. Sadly, we're only in the area for a few weeks of the year. Most of our time is devoted to skiing and on the days when skiing isn't ideal, seeing friends. But next December, I vow to (1) set aside a full day for a proper browse and chat with the fascinating, brilliant, and well-read owners; and (2) do all our holiday shopping here. This store is a true treasure, clearly a labor of love.

It's an old brick farmhouse where the woman who owns the place, a long-time local, has collected books for decades and converted all the rooms on the first floor into a shop. Feel free to chat with her in the kitchen as she's very friendly and interesting. The selection of books is extensive and well-organized. It is jam packed with good stuff so plan on spending a while. She is only open for a 3 hour slot from 2-5pm Tues-Sat so you have to plan ahead. I used to go in there as a little kid and never get sick of going back when I am visiting Vermont. It feels like a remnant of an era since lost--pure Vermont. She also has a decent Vermont history section if interested.

The store is very clean and tidy. There were plenty of staff in the store keeping things in place, helping customers with questions and also do the checkouts. We bought some greeting cards, stickers and a kid's story book from the store. Prices were decent for all the items. The checkout process was quick and easy.

As we (my husband and kids) were driving to our hotel - we passed this cute yellow storefront and couldn't believe it was a bookstore! So we quickly checked-in our hotel, unpacked and went straight to the store. Upon entering we were immediately greeted by a young lady who quickly directed us to where we needed to be. However, the frosting on the cake was the most welcoming, super knowledgeable and ecstatic owner! Elizabeth! What a treat! My daughter who is 14 and a total bookworm met her soul sister! They engaged in a conversation ... and 1.5hrs later, 5 books and a list of places we should visit while in town... we were ready for our VERMONT TRIP! BEST VISIT EVER! If this was an indication of how our trip was going to be, what a treat! You must visit Elizabeth and her store you won't regret it.

When I passed by in the morning it wasn't open, but even then there were books outside just calling out to be perused. So upon my return, some 7 hours later, I stopped in. Easy parking out front. It's huge. Books for days. These are used books, and many are in great shape, and priced accordingly. This isn't the cheapest used bookstore I've come across, but I think it's the most extensive. I wasn't looking for anything specific so didn't ask for anything. But I spent time in the cookbook and travel book sections. Huge. So many to choose from. Many decades of choices, including recent, especially important in the travel book section. I found the pricing a little higher than I expected, but I picked up some books anyway. Used bookstores keep books relevant and out of landfills both. Gotta love that.
