The facility itself is lovely and peaceful, which is important during such a difficult time. However, our overall experience was deeply affected by the behavior of one staff member, Shannon Connors. We are a large family, and after feeling pushed into moving our mother to this facility, we hoped for understanding and compassion. Instead, Shannon Connors was disrespectful and rude toward our mother and toward my siblings who were visiting. Her loud, inconsiderate behavior added unnecessary stress and pain during our mother's final days. Her lack of communication skills and apparent inability to interact sensitively with a grieving family made an already heartbreaking situation much worse. Rather than feeling supported, we felt sadness and anger because of how we were treated. We loved our mother deeply, and those last days should have been handled with care, dignity, and compassion. I sincerely hope no other family has to experience this lack of compassion during such a vulnerable time.

I'm not an attorney or a healthcare professional - just someone who's spent the last decade immersed in elder care, including leading caregiver support groups. My mom has lived at Chantilly Heights for over two years, and I'm sharing based on that firsthand, ongoing experience. My mom has lived at Chantilly Heights Memory Care since December 2022, and our experience has been overwhelmingly positive. Fun fact: she earned the rare distinction of being the first (and to my knowledge, still only) resident to move herself in - meaning she was physically fit enough to do it with me and a U-Haul we rented together! I spent six months researching facilities before choosing Chantilly Heights, specifically looking for a community dedicated solely to memory care (rather than combined assisted living/memory care facilities). After experiences with two other facilities and reviewing many more, I became convinced that a specialized memory care environment would be best for my mom. Chantilly Heights (then known as Arbor Terrace Fairfax) has consistently proven that belief correct. When I first toured, Cre Jackson, the Facilities Director, was the first person to take me around. Cre set a welcoming tone from the start and has remained a trusted advisor ever since. Rachel Moore later guided us through onboarding and did a stellar job walking us through every step. While Rachel has since moved on (as another reviewer noted), my experience has been that from the front desk to the kitchen team to management and care staff, the people at Chantilly Heights genuinely care. It's clear for many that elder care isn't just a job - it's a calling - and the emotional intelligence they show daily is remarkable. That said, no place is perfect. There have been periodic staffing changes (common in this industry), and about six months after my mom moved in, Arbor Terrace divested, with Hamister Group taking over and rebranding the community as Chantilly Heights. That transition brought challenges, but through it all, the team - particularly Executive Director Brian Zurakowski -remained committed and supportive. As the only child of two parents facing late-stage degenerative disease, I can say this journey has been made far more manageable thanks to the team at Chantilly Heights. I believe strongly that contractual relationships should be rooted in fairness and satisfaction, and Brian's team has more than upheld their end over the last three years I've been involved with them. During my mom's time there, she transitioned from the higher-functioning to the lower-functioning neighborhood, giving me a full view of the community's care across different needs and stages. Based on this experience, I've confidently recommended Chantilly Heights to several friends - and two have since moved their own parents in. This is hard work, and not everyone is cut out for it - but the staff here perform beautifully at a very difficult and important job. I also appreciate Chris Mays for sharing his experience. Having supported another family member through a similar transition, I suspect his review reflects the challenges of the handoff from Arbor Terrace to Hamister. I've spent many hours with Brian and his staff and have always found them to be responsive - and importantly, proactive. They don't just react to issues; they work with me to stay ahead of them. Unfortunately, since the facility became Chantilly Heights and the management changed, particularly under Latoya's leadership, our experience has been completely different. It has become an extremely disappointing and, at times, heartbreaking experience. There is extremely high turnover among both management and staff, which has resulted in a lack of consistency and continuity of care. It also seems that many staff members lack the empathy, attentiveness, and genuine concern that the residents deserve. We frequently walk in to find staff members on their phones while residents are simply sitting at tables with little to no interaction or engagement. Seeing this is incredibly upsetting, especially when we remember how much the facility has changed from what it once was. It is truly heartbreaking to see a facility that was once so wonderful decline to this extent. Our loved one, and all of the residents, deserve to be treated with dignity, compassion, attention, and respect. The current level of care and management is simply not what we experienced or expected when we first joined Arbor Terrace.

The office personnel are extremely good at communicating. When there were scheduling issues, they were immediately resolved. I was never left without help. They were early in taking restrictive measure--even before CMS required them. They have been transparent and communicated with families frequently. It was inevitable, given their location in Northern Virginia, that there would be COVID cases--especially since many staff work at least 2 jobs including at other facilities. Tall Oaks gave direct care staff a raise and asked them to limit their work to this single facility. Tall Oaks seems to have managed the COVID cases well, working closely with the Fairfax County Health Dept. Yes--there have been some deaths (inevitable in this population), but cases have been limited to fewer than 10% of their population. My 99-year-old parents have been safe, with no cases among residents or staff reported on their floor. My parents have lived at Tall Oaks for over 7 years. There have been many staff changes and although I've never been concerned for their safety, management and care has been variable, with current staff returning quality to the level it was when they moved in. Yes--I've had some complaints and frustrations over the years, mostly related to staff not taking responsibility for issues or not following through on commitments, but these kinds of issues have mostly disappeared in recent years as staff has changed. If I had to find a residence for my parents again, I would definitely choose Tall Oaks Assisted Living.
