I came in for dinner with a friend. We were given a bowl of tapioca chips - visualize wafers of air - on the house. I believe that was because the first server didn't listen to the request for a different table. We were also gifted two shots, and when my friend asked repeatedly if they were actually for us on the house or not, she finally got a response from the owner who found out they were for the table next to us. They handed them over, without bothering to make new ones. No, we didn't drink or touch them but come on.
My friend wanted to get the cold cauliflower salad. So strange on the menu. I tried some at her insistence. She loved it. I hated it. It's burnt, super cold cauliflower crowns in some unmemorable dressing. Ugh.
Seeing nothing I wanted on the menu, or that I could eat thst wouldn't interfere with my medical restrictions either, but really hungry and also trying to be open minded, I ordered the fried potatoes. You can't screw up potatoes, right? Wrong. Fingerling potatoes with no seasoning, not even salt, and half burnt arrived. The menu claimed the potatoes were cooked in goose fat. Didn't taste anything like that.
My friend ordered some weird salad with stinging nettles, a quail egg and I can't remember what else. I asked her sarcastically if she was going to die on me, and she said the nettles would be cooked safely. Oh man. She was humming away in ectasy with her salad.
Still hungry, the entree I ordered was the pork belly. It stated on the menu it came with rice, kale and was spicy. I told the server no kale and zero spice. I'm on medicine that is greatly affected by what I eat, and I can't eat anything spicy and no kale. There was also the small or large size option, both pricey. I went with small. When the entree arrived, I thought my eyes were being tricked by the candlelight as the overhead lights were mostly off at this point. Nope - the whole dish was about half a pound of chopped kale, with four little strips of pork that were 50% fat and about a dozen grains of rice dispersed throughout the kale. I didn't even see the rice at all till I lifted a piece of pork off the kale I said I didn't want. The pork strips were about 3 inches long and a quarter of an inch wide. And I repeat, they were half fat. This was around $20.
My friend had also ordered some other appetizer, and all I remember about it was the little eyes staring up at me of the anchovies. I ate one since I had never had an anchovy. It was like eating cigarette ash.
The dessert was actually good. I was very surprised. It was peanut butter and something. I'm sorry, that's all I recall. I'm sure it's still on the menu so people who don't like siracha, stinging nettles, anxhovies, fatty meat and burnt veggies can order something to eat.
I was really surprised, due to the food and service, that this restaurant was packed. It seats 50 people, I'm guessing. The tables are as close together as possible without just being pushed together. There are high tables with bar stools in back and really limited outdoor seating. The walls are bare, painted white, except for a horizontal line of flowers in vases in the front of the house and a bunch of small flyers/menus pasted to a wall in back. The floor is concrete, and you can see straight into the plain, grey industrial kitchen. The bar has charm and is the only talking piece in the restaurant with a unique, old-time ceiling fan.
It is extremely loud in here. I couldn't hear my friend seated across from me at times. Due to the thin wood walls and concrete, it sounds like you're at a sporting event.
The first server didn't greet me or introduce himself. My friend got there first. When I arrived, he came over and asked if I wanted a drink and couldn't look me in the face. I asked for water and also to change tables. I had injured my leg and needed to go from the high table with bar stools to a regular table so my leg wouldn't dangle. He walked off before I could finish one sentence to move tables. After 10 minutes of standing at the table, the owner came over and asked if we wanted to move. She took us to a new, regular table and hence we got the chips for free. She came back later and checked on us.
The old server decided to follow us just to make a snide remark, "We feeling better about where we are sitting."
The new server wasn't better. She didn't listen to us. We had to repeat ourselves a few times. She got things wrong. She had an attitude about being at work that night and was one of the unfriendly servers I've ever had. She never checked on us. We got refills on our drinks from other servers my friend waved down. When she dropped off our checks, she didn't say a word.
It's free to park on the street, but plan on 15-20 minutes to park then walk over. There is no lot at the restaurant.
