I came back a few days later and met a friend for drinks and gave the noodles a shot. They were fine. Not spectacular. The $15/30 pricetag for a bowl of noodles with a few greens and some pickled onions on top, left me scratching my head a bit. I like the vibe. The drinks are fine. I live in the neigbhorhood. Arrived when they opened at 5pm on a Saturday and had the place to ourselves with just one other group. By 6pm the place was nearly packed. Everything was freakin' delicious. Steak tartar, buns, potato salad, turnips, halibut, pork shoulder and chuck steak. The cocktails were also a hit amongst our group. I loved the Old Trinidad, and Ballardvardier. It was a delectable experience, however there was a flaw for us. The noise level was a bit ridiculous. Soon after sitting down everyone in my group noticed that every surface amplifies noise here. Our server was very friendly and made fantastic recommendations but we could barely hear her. I understand adding some ceiling tiles would help absorb sound? Also, our server didn't seem to give a rip we were celebrating a birthday. I kind of admit I'm one of those customers that love a little love from a restaurant on a birthday, but this didn't seem to be where to go for that. read more

This place got such good reviews on yelp, I had to try it for myself. I was not disappointed. 5 stars for food, 5 stars for service, 3 stars for ambience. This place is another great spot for family-style dining, which is becoming increasingly more popular here in Seattle. I came here with a friend, and we split bread, a salad, and two small entrées. The kale and quinoa salad was very good, though not very visually appealing I'll admit. The Ahi tuna on chimichurri was delicious and perfectly cooked. The lamb shoulder was well plated, but the sauce was just a little bit too sweet - not a dealbreaker though. A lot of the menu is rotating, so I would definitely come back to try new things. The only reason why this place doesn't get a solid 5 stars is because the restaurant designer failed to incorporate noise diffusers (or whatever they're called) in the ceiling. This means that, if you come to dine during peak hours, it will be noisy. It almost ruins the ambience, though you get used to it after a while I guess. I had to ask the waitress to repeat herself multiple times, because some of her words were lost in the noise level. I had to almost yell across the table to my dining partner for the same reason. But the food is very good, so I would consider coming back on an off night or not during peak hours. read more

First time coming here for dinner; excellent food, service and beverage choices. The Little Gems salad was out of this world, as was the Raddichio salad; flavors were unique and ultra tasty. The large bread piece was difficult to cut but yummy, as well. We were a little disappointed with the NY Steak dish as the accompanying chimichurri was way to vinegary for our liking. And however they cook the steak made it look kind of gray upon service. But we will definitely try this spot again due to the creativity of the menu and the obvious talents of the Chef. Location is pretty small but they shockingly are able to seat quite a few people inside. I even noticed a couple walk-ins make it in (seated at the bar, which looked like a fun experience as well!) It's pricy but nothing above what you would pay at most Seattle restaurants. They also have an attached 'bottle shop' with many different wine offerings (if you are wanting a bottle with dinner). Of course - they have a corkage fee, which I've hated ALL my dining life, but again - not unusual. We are looking forward to going back and will make a point of going in the summer so we can enjoy their space outside. This place is nestled within a cute neighborhood that is surround by cute shops, restaurants and beer pubs. VERY walkable! This place was delish! Great service. Went with girlfriends for Sunday brunch and made a reservation the day before. We were seated right away. The place is small so I would always make a reservation to avoid the wait. Food had a Hawaiian flare. I had: Toast/fresh bread with PB spread and jam: I was curious so ordered it and will say it was very off putting. The piece of bread was so gigantic and that none of us knew how to dig in. I almost wanted to send it back because it was literally a 3-4 inch thick piece of bread with liquid (not thick) peanut butter dripping down the sides with a dollop of jam on top. I asked for more jam so that I could taste it. Otherwise it was all PB taste. The flavors were good it just wasn't something I enjoyed eating. Traditional breakfast with quinoa-yam patty: Eggs were good. Quinoa-yam patty was mushy but taste was good. I would have liked it much better if it was crispy like fried hasbrowns or similar. The potatoes were good. Toast wasn't technically toasted but it was warm. Bloody Mary: Super tasty. Add a slab o'bacon for an extra fiver. I didn't do this cause I don't eat pork but it looked delicious. Bloody Mary was super yummy. All in all it was a really good place to eat. We enjoyed our meal here. The service was excellent. We had a reservation for a Thursday night at 7 but probably didn't have to have one. (For 6). We started with the charcoal dusted tapioca puffs just because that is so odd. It's literally activated charcoal. Tasted pretty good, like a pork rind. The STAR of the meal was a loaf of bread with butter/oil Soaked onto it but still perfectly crispy. Yum! The asparagus was ok, the pork was well liked, and the cold salmon dish was the best meat entree that we got. I found the serving size and family sharing-ness of it conveyed a bit confusingly. I came to Brimmer and Heeltap for an after-dinner conversation with a friend. The exterior is unassuming and looks like any other corner pub in Seattle. The interior was quaint, something like I'd expect from a small beachside restaurant. I really liked the floral decor. I started off with the Jasmine tea. Unfortunately it was simply a tea bag with hot water. I guess I shouldn't have expected loose leaf tea. For dessert, I had the pandan cheesecake. The cheesecake is covered in a chocolate ganache that made it look like a candy bar. I thought the cheesecake was too dense, and wasn't helped by the layer of chocolate. I'm really sad that I'm writing a negative review for a restaurant I like, but my most recent experience at Brimmer & Heeltap made me sad. I ate with 2 friends with a 5pm reservation. At 7pm, we were finishing our dessert (after having appetizers, drinks, mains, and a bottle of wine) and the manager approached us and told us that he had people waiting for our table and that we were holding up service...the basic gist was that we needed to leave. As I looked around, half the restaurant was empty and there were multiple other 4-tops available...nothing made it look like we were holding up service. I'm pretty good at noticing when a place is booked to the gills and move along dinners accordingly, but that was a really weird situation. So we stopped eating our desserts, hastily signed the checks that the manager brought by to encourage us to leave, and left. On my way out, I overheard the manager telling the guests who were waiting for our table "I'm so sorry they're taking so long...your table is almost ready." Here's the thing: at 2 hours, we weren't taking too long. We were finishing our desserts and probably would have left in 15 minutes or so. We were well within the socially accepted limits of a dinner reservation and there were many other tables free. I don't think I'll be back to Brimmer & Heeltap even though I really love the food because I felt like my business wasn't welcome at their establishment. There are so many different ways the FoH could have handled this moment and they, for whatever reason, chose the option that was not at all what I expect from such a great restaurant. read more

Came here for dinner one night. There is only street parking which is a bit limited, likely you'll need to park on one of the residential streets nearby. The place is medium sized, and turns out they only had one table open when we got there, so seems like they get fairly busy, would reserve ahead of time if possible. On the menu for some dishes they have two numbers, this means that they have a small and large size. For a bigger eater like me, a large portion is a must, portions tend on the slightly size. We ordered the bread, pepper crusted albacore tuna, chilled dungeness crab trifle, and broiled pork shoulder. The bread is basically a thick piece of toast with plenty of butter, pepper, and salt. Tasted great, but probably could easily make it at home for a lot cheaper than $4. Pepper crusted albacore tuna wasn't bad, nice contrast between the crusty outside with the softer rawer inside. The crab trifle, was creamy and you could taste the crab, but wasn't particularly satisfying. I wouldn't get it again at $16 for a small cup. The best dish is definitely the broiled pork shoulder. It's quite similar to chinese cha siu with a sweet flavor, but with less soy sauce flavor. Crusty outside with fatty tender insides. The apple kimchi is a great complement too! The kimchi is sweeter and less spicy than normal kimchi. Overall good dishes, nothing bad tasting. But being more of an upscale place, some dishes might not be worth the cost. Definitely recommend the broiled pork shoulder. read more

The waffles are so addicting and I crave them all the time especially since I haven't found a place yet that can even compare. I'm kinda afraid of hipster-y places because they can get weird with like foie gras in your ice cream or whatever but I found a great, basic brunch dish. Five stars despite the uptight lady that narc-ed on my delicious tea. I asked for peppermint tea and they said they think they can do that. Turns out it's not standard fare, all the teas they offer are weird hipster shit like lavender berry oregano and black pepper kale or whatever and they come in plastic tea bags. I don't know wtf is with that trend, mmmmm microplastics. So hispanic homie sneaks me a Trader Joes peppermint tea bag from the break room. Perfect. Delicious. Normal ass tea. I drank it all and when someone checks on us, I ask her for more. No. No more secret tea hookup. This narc white lady tries to sell me on their weird flavors but they all suck and again, they're brewed in literally plastic. I'm still giving 5 stars because the food and service was great aside from that but please, at least let people request normal teas. And fuck your hipster plastic tea bags. I will literally bring my own tea bags next time. They cost next to nothing. read more

Got a recommendation from a co-worker to try this place out on a Saturday night. Making a reservation was easy. Parking was a breeze, but keep in mind it is street parking. So I may have been lucky. Location was great - but not in the bustle or heart of Ballard. We got there early - however, our table wasn't ready. The host was quick to keep us informed of the previous guests' pace. He had a great personality and really made us feel welcome. Space at the bar was ample. Dinner was great for four girlfriends - a few shared plates and glasses of bubbly. While people around our table had complementary prosecos poured and waters refilled, we had to beg TWICE for a coffee top up. 25 minutes after finishing our meal we sat with empty plates and empty coffee mugs while our chatty waitress spend what felt like an eternity talking to other guests. After placing our order, we never saw her again. Had to literally wave her down. After telling her I desperately needed more coffee, she disappeared again. She then replaced the empty teapot of the table to the right (without being asked for a refill), poured some more water for the table on the left. It would be exactly 7 minutes after asking for coffee, we get our check. NOT COFFEE. We ask for coffee again. 3 more minutes then coffee. Have driven by this area a bunch of times but never noticed the small restaurant located in the neighborhood. I am so glad that Yelp helped me find it. The Ambiance is amazing for such a small and cozy place. The staff was very gracious and they stopped by several times to talk about their inspiration and the restaurant itself which was really great to hear about the history. Now for the food, I loved that things were simple but incredibly flavorful. Looking around at everybody's plates just made me want to try everything so I'll definitely be back for more... We walked in Sunday evening and were immediately seated. The room was lit with candles and low lighting. It has a very romantic feel which was perfect for a date night. It had a bit of whimsy, too with the floor lined with pennies and one of the walls plastered with signed menus from other restaurants. Our server was very friendly and treated us very well throughout the night which I appreciated. The menu is small but each item looked incredibly inviting. We started off with an order of bread--soft, buttery and chewy. Next was the steak tartare - soft and meaty like sashimi. I love raw meat! I loved the hints of pepper and sesame and heat in each bite, plus the large round cracker gave a great crunch. Definitely a must-try! The cold smoked potato salad arrived with a delicious pile of pecorino cheese on top and the lightly dressed greens, olives and purple potatoes underneath. The chilled dungeness crab trifle is as decadent as it sounds. I loved digging into the layers and creating the perfect bite. I had forkfuls of sweet crab with creamy texture and some greens. So yum! We shared last a plate of broiled pork shoulder with caramelized onion kimchi. The meat was tender and juicy. I'm so used to covering up dry pork with sauce and this was perfect on its own. The end was two orders of hot cocoa with baileys. I absolutely loved the shortbread cookie and wished it was two feet long so I could continue to dunk it into the chocolatey goodness. We ordered some cocktails. I wasn't too happy with the Fog Horn only because I didn't like ginger beer as much as I thought I would. However, I had some of the red wine and it was phenomenal. I had a whole glass but it was so delicious I've been thinking of that wine and the entire evening ever since. We had brunch at Brimmer & Heeltap this past weekend and had an absolutely great experience. We made reservations through Yelp the week prior and were seated without any issue or wait. As a table of four, we shared a scotch egg (beautifully soft boiled egg encased in their house made sausage with a fantastic molasses-based sauce that wasn't too sweet), and three traditional breakfasts (bacon, quinoa-yam patty, and duck confit with all three being exceptional). The coffee was good. That being said, I'd like to tell you about what made this review a slam dunk 5 stars: our waiter, Avery. Talk about a guy who makes you feel right at home. He's knowledgeable about the menu and has a great sense of humor. Even as the restaurant started to become busy, he would always have time to come by our table with coffee, water, and a great personality. Kudos to you, Avery. read more

I've had Brimmer and Heeltap bookmarked for a while so I was really excited to check it out with some friends who had just come in from out of town. It was a good thing that we made reservations because the place was packed! (Even with reservations, we waited about 20-30 minutes). Luckily, we were able to order some cocktails beforehand so I didn't mind the wait; it was a lot of fun watching the bartender making cocktails -- such precision and attention to detail. When we were finally seated the hostess served us a bowl of Tapioca Puff Chips as a thank you for the wait; a really nice touch which our group appreciated. We had been debating about ordering the chips so I'm glad that we got to try them. They were crisp and lightly seasoned (savory and tart) and a great way to wet our palates. To Eat we ordered: - Steak Tartare: Simple and fun to eat. The grated egg yolk was an interesting touch and the crackers were crispy, puffy, and delicious. - Bread: $6 for a slice of bread?! Don't be fooled because each table with place and order...and for good reason. The bread was cut into a thick slice, toasted with a healthy serving of butter, and seasoned with salt and pepper. It was wonderful and a perfect vessel to pick up sauces from your other dishes. - Charred Octopus: Tender and delicious. I love ordering octopus when I'm out to eat because I'm afraid to make it at home. The cashew butter was not my favorite alone, but great when eaten with the huckleberry relish. - Dungeness Crab Pancake: - Spicy Beef Rib: Flavorful, tender, and nicely charred on the outside. Meat was fall-off-the-bone and the kale slaw & pickled cipollini provided the needed contrasting bite to the dish. - Pork Shoulder: Savory and delicious. Between the Beef Rib and Pork Shoulder, our table was arguing about which plate was better. The marinated fuji apples were almost kimchi-esque and an innovative way to serve pork & apples. - Pineapple Tart: The filling was just a little too loose but I appreciated the tart/sweet flavors of the dish. - Chocolate Eclair: Just okay. Nothing wrong with the dessert, but definitely didn't live up to the rest of the meal. To Drink we ordered: - Eternal Sunshine - Salt Bae - Beautiful, Dark, and Twisted - B&H Mule - Scandinavian Mustache I won't go into the details about the cocktails except to say that each one was unique, flavorful, and refreshing. I had seen the reviews about the cocktails beforehand and made sure that we ordered our fair share of the menu. We each took one sip of our $4/cup of coffee and tried not to spit it out. Save your money and grab some coffee across the street - which was excellent. They also include 20% service tip. I understand upping the prices and not accepting tips - I actually wish more places would do this. However automatically adding a 20% service/tip doesn't sit kindly. We've since had dinner and brunch here. Both delicious. The tapioca puff chips are delightful. They have such a soft delicious taste that gets better the more you eat. Steak Tartare... fantastic. We always order this if we see it on the menu, and my fiancé and I ranked this in some of the best we've had. The real star of the show was the Hand Cut Tagliatelle... OMG! You could not tell this was vegan, it was just to die for. My fiancé is lactose intolerant so it was a great surprise to find out they had this on the menu. This is a must not miss item. The potato hash wasn't amazing but it was good... I was just too full from the bread to finish it. This is a cute place and is larger inside than it looked from the outside. Easy to find but parking limited in residential area. We had reservations but showed up 10 minuets early and were able to be seated right away. Our server and other staff members were friendly, helpful and patient with us. We lingered for some minutes after eating and their great service towards us didn't change.
