Broad Financial set me up with a self-directed IRA. They did a pretty good job. However, you'll be dealing with many entities, and it has been a TRULY frustrating process. It's been over a month and I'm stuck in limbo waiting to get my institutional account opened on exchanges, and my wire transfer through. In the time that I've been waiting, the assets I was planning to invest in have doubled. This TRULY TRULY hurts. Yes over a month ago. I thought I'd write this review to help others through this tedious process and some of the pitfalls. 1. As soon as you get the LLC started and get the docs, open an institutional account on all the exchanges you plan on buying cryptocurrency/stocks. This can take a long time. Coinbase will take the longest and will not return your emails when you ask about progress. 2. itBit Paxos took about 3 days to open an Institutional Account. KuCoin as well. 3. You WILL need a hardware device that is not bought with personal funds. As soon as you get the money in your Checkbook Checking account by the hardware device that very day. Why? See No. 4 4. Your personal assets can not co-mingle with your business Account, not even in the same hardware wallet. 5. With that said, you'll have to figure out how to get your Checkbook IRA to buy the hardware device. If you did not get a Debit Card with your Checkbook IRA or checks, you'll need to set up a Business PayPal Account, so you can link to this account and buy stuff with PayPal or you'll have to buy stuff with a wire, or cashier's check, and well, who takes those forms of payment online. 6. When buying a hardware device, always look for coupons. There are always deals. 7. The custodian you deal with, with Broad Financial, has 'some' fees. There are , Investment Fee, Cash Disbursement Fee, ACH Disbursement Fee, Re-registration of Investment Fee, Sale of Asset Fee Precious Metals Storage Fee, Account Termination Fee. Expedited Processing (2 business days), Overnight Delivery, Incoming Wire Outgoing Wire, Roth Conversion/Recharacterization, Returned Check. Try to move where you don't the least possible amount for these fees. 8. Choosing a Checkbook Control Bank. I chose Solera, which is NOT partnered with Broad Financial. The fees are way better and there is only a $50 Balance. I don't necessarily like Soleara, but they are cheap. 9. When setting up LLC try to get it in the cheapest state as you will pay quarterly fees. 10. If you are using a 401K, try to do a Roth Conversion.... and start a Roth IRA as opposed to a traditional IRA. You'll have to pay taxes the following year on it, but it's going to be less than what you'll be paying at 59 years old, if you invested right and made some cash. Bite the bullet now. So far so good! Very easy to work with. We had our introductory call regarding a checkbook LLC IRA early March and we just signed a lease with a tenant in our IRA-purchased rental property yesterday. One month from inquiry to up and running with Broad with not all that much work on our end. Just a bit of paperwork. I'd say 5 hours total or less invested getting our account with Broad set up and money transferred to them. An hour or two setting up a business checking account. And the rest was just the normal property buying and landlord process. The property buying/renting part also only took a month (including missing out on the first property we offered on) since we could close quickly with our all-cash offer. It offers me flexibility in investing in those investment that typically are not available inside the standard retirement account that is limited to mutual funds and the stock market. These types of instruments will increase in popularity as they are a much better tool and gateway for investing and opportunity to select your investments. Been with them since 2010. They set up a self directed 401(k) attached to a very small business I own, a machine shop. This allowed me to roll over my previous retirement money into an "investment trust" that comes with a checkbook!!! I always play it by the book but it has allowed me to more than double my mid 6 figure account value. This without having to call and pay through another entity that always charges each time and takes their time doing it. Unlike Equity Trust Co, who screwed me over big time for $$$$'s, these folks are on the up and up. I was able to find investments, at first real estate rentals and then REIT and Cannabis investments that have payed handsomely each month with an additional spring distribution of "extra profits" divided between all investors equaling 12%+ annual total. If I have a technical question they have ALWAYS gotten back to me... all for less than Netflix per year! I dont know what you might need but I want to make money with my money and cant afford to mess it up. What I got from Broad Financial came with books of rules updated annually and the speed of being able to just write a check for an investment. My wife got a lease car with her job, when it was time to turn it in I wrote a check for it and sold it for a $1500 profit. It ALL must go back into the trust but thats ok, its a good deal for me and the government who can now tax me on a lot more money.
