Uve J., Illinois Self-directed retirement accounts let you get away from the roller coaster ride inherent in the markets and provide owners more control and flexibility over investing for retirement. In my experience self-directed retirement accounts are not all the same, and a self-directed 401K offers flexibility in investment options at a very reasonable cost, much more so that self-directed IRA custodial arrangements permit. I set up a self-directed 401K through Broad Financial about three years ago. Previously I had a self-directed IRA with a custodian that was among the largest in the field and was, based upon comments I came across from self-directed IRA account owners as I was looking for an IRA custodian, among the best in the relatively small IRA custodian business. Prior to going the self-directed route, I had all my retirement investments with a financial advisor in traditional stock and bond investments, until the 2007-08 stock market rout made me rethink the wisdom of putting all retirement assets into the markets. Some of my retirement assets are still in the market, as are all of my wife's retirement assets, and I'm not opposed to passive investing, but there's a lot to say in favor of a self-directed 401K with checkbook control. Set up costs were substantially less than annual fees charged by the IRA custodian and ongoing annual fees for the 401K are about 15% of the custodian's annual fee. Costs advantages aside, having checkbook control makes things run much smoother, faster, and eliminates being at the mercy of marginally competent custodial account employees who do little more than push paper, and sometimes give conflicting or erroneous information as to what documentation the custodian requires to get something funded. For me, move away from an IRA custodian came when bungling as to what documents were needed to fund an investment nearly resulted in that investment going south, and my being at risk of losing earnest money because the custodian changed its mind about documents needed to fund being complete at the last minute (only the good fortune to have a tech savvy borrower being able to electronically sign last minute documents saved the day). After that near disaster I looked into check book control in self-directed retirement accounts and came across Broad Financial. Gone were days or weeks passing between issuing the instruction to pay a bill and the payee receiving payment. Gone were the inordinate waits between submitting third party payments to the custodian and funds being available for use. Now bill payments go out the day the bill is received (if I so choose, and with contractors, timely payment results in better deals and loyalty); deposits clear like any deposit to your bank account clears, autopay for also recurring bills is possible, and checkbook control eliminates waiting for the custodian's check, making investments like tax deeds possible, since payment is usually required immediately, and the sales officer won't wait the week or longer it takes for the custodian to cut a check (they won't make change either - it's what the winning bid is, and payment in 24 hours). My 401k holds or has held rental real estate, secured loans to third parties, and more mundane investments like stocks, mutual funds, and ETFs. Cash can easily be put to work by investing in CD's or money markets, or the stock market and the combination of being able to have both traditional brokerage type investments and non-traditional investments lets you make your money work harder. With the IRA custodian arrangement only real estate and loans made financial sense given the price structure for using their brokerage feature and the custodian counting brokerage account values as part of the investment value on which they based their annual fee. The practical result was that cash often sat in the custodian's account, earning next to nothing for me, and moving the money elsewhere was difficult and triggered fees for the custodian's required documentation. I haven't needed to call on Broad Financial for support often, but when I have, it's been easy to reach someone knowledgeable. The prior IRA custodian - not so much (turnover at the custodian's also aggravated the problem and contributed to inconsistent answers as to how to navigate through the custodian's procedures, and that too is gone now). If you are going to do self-directed retirement investment, seriously look into and consider a checkbook self-direct 401K. Self-directed retirement accounts aren't for everyone, but if you have the discipline, investment savvy, and confidence to control your own retirement future, IMO a checkbook self directed 401K is the vehicle to use. read more

A truly professional company! I wanted to invest my 401k into cripto word so to choose BF ( Broad Financial ) was not an easy task especially when they don't have many reviews online ... but i took my chance and so far i am happy ! This is a small company so don't expect customer support like chats or return calls immediately but hey you are not going to pay $10-$15k fees like bitcoinIRA right ? So be patient and they will do it right . They will follow with you on every step u need : open LLC company , business account , custodian , bank account , exchange, etc . I have gotten all my question answered same day or next and they also sent me all docs in a nice folder . Having all this i was able to open / approve on CoinBase exchange in 2 business days and also open business bank account - excellent ! I hope to have good experience with them in future and i do recommend this company who likes to invest his 401k into different assets . Thanks BF ! read more

The sales pitch was great. Unfortunately once the check was cut that disappeared. When complaining about the drop in service I was told that they are very busy on Monday's and Friday's (somehow I should have known) and that I should refer to their website to see their great reviews and somehow be placated with that info. Obviously there must be some that have had good transactions with this company but I certainly wasn't one of them. Before you lose $550 with this company I would recommend doing what I should have done beforehand, find another provider. read more
