I am a retired RN and PA. I now volunteer as a patient advocate. My client, Brandy, was advised by…read morethis clinic to have an amputation performed on her pup, who was born with a deformity. A week later, the incision opened. The pup had another surgery to close the wound. But the vet inserted a penrose drain. After the insertion, there was bloody drainage which got much worse. Brandy took the pup to the Metropolitan Vet Hospital. The ER vet told her: "A drain should not have been put in." The vet performed ligation (surgical closure) of the pup's axillary artery bleed and and administered multiple blood transfusions. The ER stay cost $7,700. The medical literature states: "During placement of active drains, care should be taken to avoid placing them near arteries to avoid pressure necrosis of the arterial wall. One report decribes patients in whom placement of an active drain was followed by hemorrhage." The evidence points to the poorly placed penrose drain, which we believe led to the massive hemorrhage. Brandy requested reimbursement of the "care" she received at the Suburban Veterinary Clinic: $1990.57. The vet claimed Brandy didn't follow the post op instructions - which we believe is untrue - and he refused reimbursement.
