Stopped in on a Friday after a quick snack and was amazed to see inside! There was a stunning mid century velvet couch for sale and so many beautiful and lovely antiques! I wish I knew about this place earlier in my trip, could've easily spent hours looking at everything! I found a gorgeous vintage perfume ad from a 1945 Vogue magazine in mint condition! If you're in the market for vintage furniture, Broadway will be a great stop! This "antique" (really more retro/vintage) market has 2 floors. The lower level has more smaller things - bar ware, collectibles, kitsch etc. There's a good amount of vintage clothing and jewelry as well. The upper level Is mostly furniture from the 50's to 70's along with a dealer that specializes in original movie posters. Prices for the most part seemed "okay" to me and I think if you want that Don Draper look you're going to be very happy here. All the dealers did have nicely organized displays and the store was clean and brightly lit. Worth stopping in from time to time to see what's on offer. read more

Love this place so much! Two large floors of antiques and vintage finds. Reminds me of all the places in Los Angeles and Long Beach I used to go picking at. You can source items and furnishings for clients here. It's a great assortment of modernist furniture, jewelry, decor and trinkets. You will definitely find something interesting here. This is a great place that I'm sure interior designers go to find furniture they want to take to a fabricator and have reupholstered and either refinish the wood and or have new plating done in chrome/brass, Etc. They have a selection of various art in the assortment and small objects like blown glass or old eye glasses! Tons to see so set aside some good time! I've found a bunch of great vintage stores in the neighborhoods up north. Don't forget to tell your friends! It's great having places like this open to shop at during a pandemic. The thing about vintage or antique shopping is that usually you have to dig. It kind of smells AND you have to dig. Things are piled on top of other things, it kind of smells AND you have to dig. Not here. Everything is merchandized beautifully and is clean. The first group of items I officially noticed (because they were hard not to see and I tend to have a gravitational pull towards pretty things) was the jewelry. There were many beautiful colors of bakelite bracelets and gorgeous gold-plated necklaces. You'll love it here and famous people LOVE Broadway Antique Market, too! Tom Hanks, and John Malkovich have rummaged around on occasion and my boy, Nate Berkus, recommends it on Oprah's site, which makes it like double-recommended. What kept happening to me here was I would do a lap, then do another one and realize there were 1,000 things I didn't see the first time. This is definitely one of those places where you want to do MANY passes. In the end, I bought an extraodinary vintage LL Bean Bag. I have a genius shoe repair man where I live, who also works on other leather accessories, that will whip this bag into shape. For my husband, I bought a cocktail recipe shaker. Gorgeous. My friend, Leah, found a vintage Le Creuset fondue pot that still had the tags on it. Looks like people didn't use fondue pots in the past the same way we don't use fondue pots now. Except for Leah, she'll use the crap out of it. Great find for her. Whether you call it antique or vintage, this kind of shopping is fun IF you go to the right places and this one is. read more

This place is amazing. I always stop in when I have a couple hours to kill. The staff is super friendly and knowledgeable. Prices are great and they work with you recommending movers to get bigger pieces delivered. Once one of the dealers overheard me trying to figure out how to get a bigger purchase home and offered to drop it off because we lived in the same neighborhood! When would that happen in New York?!? They're only open Fridays Saturdays and Sundays now, so that takes a little planning but it's worth it. Now matter what you're looking for, if it's vintage chances are you'll find it here! This is one of the most unique places I've been to in Chicago. It's a true hidden gem, considering I pass it all the time (usually when it's already closed) and only recently decided to go in. I love its almost nostalgic "museum" vibe, and I could see spending well over an hour looking around at everything. I've always loved shopping here, and even marveled at some of the oddities, but on a recent trip there was one oddity I couldn't funk with. Near some of the questionably racist music scores (which I've always looked at with fascination mixed with horror, but I understand a seller might have such a thing in their possession and simply wish to be rid of it) was a mask in a glass case. I've never seen anything like it. It was a combination of a klan hood and a blackface mask, if you can imagine. It looked well-worn, even sweaty around parts. It would have been horrifying in any case, but as it was being sold by the same seller who has music scores of blackface minstrel shows, I did the math. I creepy blackface mask (or death mask??) just feels too far. So I figured: "I'll say something to the ownership. They've always been helpful in the past." Not today. I told them (two guys) the mask seems too borderline and they should consider taking it down. They didn't understand why. I tried to explain, pointing out it's the same booth selling other blackface performance memorabilia. They still didn't understand and then proceeded to tell me about how Black people love buying this stuff. Which is confusing, because I'm Black and I'm telling them I find it horrifying. They argued that historians are quite interested in this kind of material (which is an argument I've heard from other antiques dealers selling racist stuff -- see my other posts. This is also a bullshit argument since I'm fairly certain the number of historians actually conducting research by shopping at the antiques store is fairly slim compared to run-of-the-mill consumers with no interest in doing the extra legwork to understand the context of their purchase). They further argued that it's not like the mask is, say, Nazi memorabilia. That's where I lost it and had to leave the store, never to return. Don't ever tell a Black person that they shouldn't get so upset about blackface because it's not like it's a swastika. If you want to argue you're contributing to history, do some damn historical research so you know what the hell it is you're selling. I'll never shop their again, only because the thought of supporting ignorant white people who help propagate racist material in the world is too sickening. read more

The service here is horrifying. We recently moved to Edgewater and were enjoying an afternoon of stopping into shops to check things out. I love antique items, but instead of a hello when we walked through...we got a "set your drinks on the counter please" in a snobby gruff tone from the elderly woman in half-glasses. I work in retail as well, and if the policy is no drinks...I at least ask NICELY. Oh yea, they weren't cans of soda or a large cups from a fast food place...they were CLOSED WATER BOTTLES. Closed securely. I was still mildly interested in checking things out, but the most interaction I got from the staff was the grumpy woman. They were all huddled around a computer and glancing at customers in a snobby arrogant fashion. The environment was just as pompous as they were. Some beautiful merchandise was there (overpriced nonetheless) but you'd have to portray an uptight better-than-others attitude before they'd pay attention. An antique stored filled to the brim on two (2) floors. There are many items, there surely is some kind of treasure that would fit your individual taste and needs. The store reminded me of the old Studio V (vee) which was located at 672 N. Dearborn and closed shortly after the owner passed away in 1999, but on a much larger scale. Lots of Art Deco items in this store. Art Deco was really big around 1986, it was highly sought after at that time. Not sure about demand since then. It works well in a city environment. I purchased a St. George silver plated icon for $18 which they mislabeled as to do with the Crusades. The help seemed more interested in sitting at the desk, eating cookies and not too interested in looking around if someone needed help or had a question. I will return! read more

I am an empathetic motherfucker. That's right, I have EMF. I care about people and things. So it hurts me to say that Broadway Antique Market is a total dump. In fact, I am over the moon sad to have to report that this craphouse is total waste of time that no one should go to ever. Their idea of a business, evidently, is where you rent out your shop in small sections to other dudes who go rummaging around abandoned storage lockers and probably alleys for old furniture and other bullshit and then pretend it's antique instead of busted up crap. Then they charge like $20 or $100 or whatever the fuck for some trinket or pee stained chair from Sears bought in 1950. I am also extremely sorry to report that each little tiny section of this shop has it's junk locked up so then you have to enlist some old lady to open it up for you. Which is something I never contemplated doing even once as I strolled through. Due to all the merchandise being old, unexceptional, and comically overpriced. Two weekends ago I went with dad to the Salvation Army store on Van Ness near Market in San Francisco. And I was like, even though I have EMF, this is a bunch of dusty crap. My dad however, an excited proponent of drek as pop art bough lots of stuff. I think he spent like $30 bucks. So my feelings about this shop is that they should turn it into a Salvation Army or Brown Elephant. And stop pretending and hurting peoples feelings who wasted 5 minutes walking through this joke of a store. read more

At the end of the day, I must admit my issue with BAM is as much about my personal touch of "crazy" as about their shop. But here it goes. The name of this place is "Broadway ANTIIQUE Market." But guess what they don't sell...ANTIQUES! Now, since they specialize in selling "old stuff" it seems to me that someone at the store know that they are NOT an "ANTIQUE" store. Instead they are overloaded with a ton of vintage/retro items and RARELY have a piece or two of antique furniture. Now why am I crazy? Because I keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result. BAM continues to be touted online as one of the top "Antique" shops in Chicago, and they continue to hold on to the misnomer of "Broadway ANTIQUE Market," so I keep returning (thinking something has changed) only to have my eyeballs tortured by the sight of 2 floors of vintage furniture and home accessories. Sometimes I'm lucky enough to find 1-2 pieces of antique furniture, usually Eastlake, but usually nothing. I drive to other cities for antique shopping and would be livid if I ended up in a place like this. Considering my visceral, stomach churning reaction to vintage furniture, I promise not to return. I just wish that either BAM or online articles would promise to stop misusing the term "antique" in relation to this store. Lastly, I've seen the complaints about customer service, but I've always found them to be nice and helpful...even when I'm complaining about the fact that they have no antique furniture. If I have some time to kill, I love to go wander around this place. It's the biggest of the "North Broadway Antique District," if three or four stores in the span of a couple blocks comprise a "district." And the other stores could likely fill up BAM's first floor, leaving their second in tact. It's one of the sort of antique stores made up of dozens of vendors' mini-shops, so the content varies, as does its quality and price. There's a pretty large and diverse jewelry selection, plenty of art--both paintings and sculpture, old magazine ads, some books here and there, and all sorts of obligatory antique store trinkets and gew-gaws that exist only to be themselves. The upstairs is all furniture; again, styles vary (from 40's modern to 60's ultra-modern), but the prices all trend high. There are some pockets of clothing here and there; however, there seems to be just one for men. One of my favorites is the drawers of old random photos. Need a picture of Aunt Myrtle's wedding from 1962? Great uncle Theodore's class portrait? A little weird, but still fun to leaf through... read more

Buyer Beware!! I recently bought a set of china from Broadway Antique Market that had over 100 pieces. I asked the staff if all the pieces included were in the same great condition that the display pieces and was told that they were. They also said that this particular vendor was very reputable and could be counted on for the quality of the antiques he sold at their store. I took them at their word and did not inspect each piece of the service before taking it home. Once I got home and had an opportunity to inspect the china, I found that more than half of the pieces we very used in poor condition. Do not mistake this for thrift store. They have a very well organized store and a huge assortment of any vintage item you might want. Too pricey for me though for old stuff. They wanted $45 for some vintage eyeglass frames that you can usually find at a thrift store for a buck. There is a ton of expensive furniture that is in great condition. I was lucky to get out of there only a hundred bucks poorer... and with "just what I needed-" the start of a new collecting hobby. Broadway Antique Market is probably my favorite go-to antique shop in the city. In the past, I've found some great vintage duds, 30's-40's kitchen items, and a few small pieces of furniture. Prices are always negotiable and the staff, while not overly-friendly, are helpful if you need something. If you like to poke around and browse, say on a cold winter afternoon, you can definitely waste some time here with the variety of small, medium or large collectibles. Some prices are fairly high, but deals can be found. If you are like me, you just may settle for some vintage postcards of Chicago. If you have the time to be patient and thorough, it might pay off. If you're a fan of mid-century modern, you will find a lot of items here. If I ever change my own decor from "Episcopalian Lodge" to mid-century modern, I would make this place my first stop. So if you have old money to burn on old things, or if you just want to get some design ideas, take a stroll through here sometime. Doesn't cost to look. read more

It's BAM that makes me wonder why humans continue to produce material possessions - there's so much great (interestingly designed and better quality) stuff already made! BAM is arranged by dealer, not category, so not all like items are near each other. However, it's all very neatly organised and clean. Pretty much everything is in nice glass display cases. My favourite, of course, is the jewelry. European designs, Mexican silver, gemstone, rhinestone, Bakelite, Art Deco, colourful plastic beads... You can find just about anything. They even have a few baskets with really cheap bags of beads or miscellaneous jewelry pieces for crafty types. Plenty of apparel, accessories, glassware, books, quilts, cigarette cases, old advertisements, art pieces, random photographs (including tintypes) and much more to peruse. I spend hours just wandering around gazing in wonder as though it were a museum. Honestly I've never even gotten to checking out the furniture on the second floor, but if it's anything like the window displays, it's gotta be awesome. Yes, there are plenty of items here that I could never afford. But the wonderful clerks can give you ideas of which dealers are in various price ranges. For example, several of the jewelry cases in the front room by the entrance are designer (aka pricey) pieces... Check out the other rooms for great jewelry that's way less expensive. If you're on a really tight budget, you can get small fun things like vintage matchbooks for less than a buck. I'm not sure where another Yelper got the idea that the clerks were snobbish or distrustful. The clerks have always been incredibly helpful and friendly; they recognise us whenever we stop by and say hello, even pointing out new items that would be of particular interest to us based on what we usually buy. They answer questions to the best of their ability; they have a pretty good idea of what they have in the store at any given time and can direct you towards it. They're very gentle with your purchases and will wrap them up carefully for you. Sign up for BAM's email list; they have special sales every so often. The percentages off vary from dealer to dealer (signs on each case will tell you what the discount is), but you always save more if you pay in cash. read more

So I stopped in here on my way home from the Edgewater Antique Mall and was pleasantly surprised. Its clean and organized and plenty of cool stuff. It seemed a little more upscale in the jewelry and general collectables (pottery & design pieces) than EAM, but it didn't seem as well laid out and didn't give me the same warm fuzzy.
