I've been attending Broadway Sacramento (formerly known as Broadway Series) musicals here for the past decade, as well as the Music Circus. Basically these are the national/domestic/U.S. touring companies -- so not truly "community" theater as the venue name might suggest. My first show at CCT was Les Miserables, actually. In the Heights, West Side Story, Wicked, Avenue Q, Starlight Express, Mamma Mia!, Chicago, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Jersey Boys, Phantom of the Opera, Rent, and Spring Awakening...One of my favorite non-musical shows I've seen here was Kristen Chenoweth in concert (the original Glinda from Wicked, and Pushing Daisies, GCB, etc.). So awesome. ...anyway, I've sat in all the different seats: orchestra near the front, rear orchestra, balcony front row, balcony boxes, and second grand tier. If you can, splurge on seats in the orchestra level (middle to front) for the best acoustics and views. The rear orchestra is fine if you care more for listening to the show or focusing on the bigger picture/staging than seeing the particular actor's faces so much. The balconies aren't stacked on top of the orchestra as far forward as in other theaters, but the box seats are roomier for sure. Be aware that the front row of the balconies does have a bar/railing to help people walk across, but can hinder the view of the stage once you're actually sitting down. The staff is pretty friendly and helpful with finding seating, will call tickets aren't a problem, and tickets by phone are easy too. For all the ladies out there, here's a tip. Instead of waiting forever in the lines for women's restrooms inside the Community Center Theater, make sure to bring your show ticket with you, exit the rear of the building and use the bathrooms at the adjacent Sacramento Convention Center Complex. Parking-wise, I usually use the Capitol Garage at 10th and L Streets and it never exceeds $5. I really wish that they had a marquee at the entrance to the theater along L Street instead of just in front of the Convention Center along J Street. They've improvised with banners across the building, or the parking the tour busses/bigrig trucks in front of the theater, with a few posters in the glass display cases in the lobby. The newer format of the seasons (fewer shows, shorter runs) isn't ideal, and there have been a few technical difficulties (mics and set pieces) but I am still a faithful patron. Sacramento has a "little sister" stigma because what city can measure up to San Francisco? SF is an amazing (and amazingly expensive) place, and as a Sacramento resident and theatergoer, sure SF shows are great too (you know you're in a pricey seat when the teeny old theaters have renovation fees included in the price and legroom is on par with coach airline rows, and the balconies already cost $50 minimum) but only once in awhile for my wallet/budget's sake. Go see a show at the Community Center Theater, at least once. 2013-2014's lineup (November-June) includes Priscilla, Buddy, Flashdance, Blue Man Group, Sister Act, and Wicked. read more

This was my first year being a season holder to 5 great musicals and looking forward to the next 5. The musicals are a great way to enjoy with family and the performances are GRAND! Arrive early to find parking on the street or garage parking like 17&L $2 after 6apm. They sell beverages and specialty musical theme drinks , snacks and musical souvenirs. Sacramento does an absolutely AMAZING job with the performances shown at the convention center. I have seen Wicked, the Lion King, and Phantom of the Opera here and they never fail to amaze me. When I first saw the Phantom of the Opera I wasn't expecting a whole lot because I figured the good ones could only be seen in San Francisco or New York. I thought I might enjoy it, but nothing more than that. I was happily proven wrong, because Phantom was jaw dropping (they all were, but that was when I decided I would not pass up an opportunity at this venue). They do soooooooooo good with the set design despite the smaller stage, and they find very good and talented performers. Because of the smaller setting you will pretty much have a good seat no matter where you are sitting. The employees are always extremely professional.... For the price, you can't beat it. I will never pass up a show I want to see here just because it is in Sacramento. Very very very satisfied by this venue....please give these plays a shot because you will have a great time. read more

Yes, I continue to be impressed with the quality of national touring companies that stop in Sacramento for broadway performances. The Sacramento Community Center maybe isn't as quaint as the theaters on Broadway in NYC but it still is a great place to see a show and it's all about the performance after all. I am so glad we have the CMT in our area. I have season tickets to the "Broadway Series" and of course seeing all the traveling shows is always a mixed bag. I can say that they are all top notch productions of the most relevant shows of our time. Going to see the latest tony award winning show downtown is sooo much easier than trekking to SF or NY. At the Music Circus, I am always amazed at how well they can adapt shows from the regular format to a circular stage under a tent. Not only do they support our local actors by hiring the best from the area, but they are able to get leads on Broadway to take a working vacation in Sac during the summer. A win-win for all! I can't wait to see "Forever Plaid" at the Cosmopolitan. Maybe next week! read more

Sacramento offers great live performances through their Broadway Series program offered at the Community Center Theater adjacent to the Convention Center. Each season the shows change and offer popular choices of the day as well as classic performances. The venue is the largest in Sacramento. The Grand Tier or the Mezzanine level offer the best views of the performances. The building was constructed several decades ago and the dated monolithic trendy design is a testament to lack of style used in public building construction in the 1960s 70s and early 80s. The City is current developing plans to update the interior as well as the exterior, but don't let the looks (or the name for that matter) prevent you from attending the performances. The acoustics are wonderful as are the performances themselves. I have been attending Broadway Series performances since I moved to Sacramento in 2001 and have never been to a ill performed show. The stage is large enough even for performances of Phantom and The Lion King. My rating is 5 Stars! read more

I came here for the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra production of Beethoven and beyond. It featured piano prodigy Conrad Tao. What a great evening! The orchestra played wonderfully, and there was a full house. I was fortunate enough to have bought tickets early, so we sat in the second row. The acoustics were great and the theatre itself is extremely pretty. The line for the woman's restroom was a bit out of hand, but other than that I had a wonderful time and shall hopefully be back soon. read more

I came here with my dad to watch Jersey Boys, and it was a wonderful experience! This place has a classier vibe than some of the other places I have visited in California to watch Broadway musicals. Once you find street parking, entering the building is very welcoming, and there are many exits to avoid extreme crowds after the show. read more

I have been going to Broadway Sacramento (formerly Broadway Series) for the vast majority of my life. I've had season tickets the last two years and plan to do it next year as well. The shows are always first rate, and I almost always have a great time. Once in a while there's one that isn't quite my flavor, but that's not their fault, it's mine. I want to love it and actually would love it if they would sell me season tickets that were not in the nosebleed part of the theater where the sound was garbled and the folks on the stage were more than stick figures. We had season tickets last year and were told as season ticket holders we would be higher on the list for better seats, and yet we got exactly the same seats which means no one down lower choose not to renew . . . I don't think so. Even weirder is that for one show last year we needed to change the date and they found us really good seats. I am guessing you need to be some kind of insider to get the good seats. If you are an insider good for you. If you are not I would recommend not wasting your money on the cheap seats. They are cheap for a very good reason. read more

Not going to leave a detailed review about one specific show. We did return from a show today, and like every other one I have attended, was very good. I take my daughter to one or two shows a year here and she loves them (plus it exposes her to some of the arts as she is principally involved in sports. Shows are always well done and the venue very nice. Two big thumbs up!! read more

Took my family to see the amazing show "Book of Mormon". My husband and I had seen it before and wanted to share it with my parents and siblings. The show was just as good as I remember, with a remarkable cast and fun story, but the sound mixing was awful! I have good hearing and struggled to hear what the lead characters were saying during their dialogue. My dad, who has some hearing issues, couldn't hear a single thing. All the hearing devices loaned out quickly (there were maybe 20 ish available from the start) and even after multiple complaints to ushers and other staff the mix wasn't adjusted. I love theater, but it's wasteful to spend the money if I can't hear what's going on. I was and am really disappointed with how the show went. read more
