We went here on one of their open house days with my three-year-old daughter. It was a really cool experience. You get to walk amongst goats cows and pigs. Everyone working there was very friendly and full of information on the animals if you asked. I would highly recommend this place. Seems like it's a well run sanctuary for animals that were down on their luck. Oh and be sure to wear close toed shoes, and while they have washing stations, I recommend bringing hand sanitizer for after you pet the animals. read more

I went to the Open Sanctuary Animal Snuggle event. For $10 you can explore the farm and pet, snuggle and play with most of the animals. Some of the enclosures open to guest were pigs, goats, sheep. Through fences you could look at and pet horses, donkeys, mini horses, cows, water buffalo and more. This is an amazing property, they rescue abused, neglected or otherwise uncared for farm animals. It was a great expert for people of all ages! There is only a porta potty on location. They do have hand washing stations, street parking only dahlia only. read more

This review is a double edged sword for me. This place is an animal sanctuary and most likely a far better place then where the animals came from. This, however, does not relieve the sanctuary from not taking on more animals than they can reasonably care for. I drove 50 miles round trip to visit this property, meet the animals and donate some money. I had never been there before. What I found was a run down house on some property. There was no signage aside from half a dozen aggressively worded "no trespassing" type signs. I walked up and down the street looking for where to enter. I finally found an entrance well north of the house and made my way in. The volunteers collecting money and helping show people around were great. Friendly and very helpful. All of them clearly enjoyed helping the animals in this sanctuary. The animals all seemed to have solid access to quality food and water. My argument comes in the feeling there was simply too many animals and they didn't seem especially well maintained. The big white dogs had paws that appeared grown over and filthy. I could not tell if they were rescues, herding dogs or pets. I pet dozens of goats and many seemed stressed, were filthy with flies on them. The flies in general were something to contend with for sure. The animals seemed to have plenty of shelter but stepping inside any shelter became a fly problem so bad I couldn't step in for more than a minute or two. Animals require a certain level of bathing, maintenance and care and I just don't feel sure that this is happening here. As grateful as I am for the rescue in general, I'd sure like to see them clean it up, organize it and maintain the animals at a higher level. I readily admit I'm not a farm or livestock expert and simply might be 100 miles off on some of my opinions. I am, however, a lifelong dog owner and know what a well maintained dog looks like. The dogs are not well maintained and I think that is a fair barometer for the rest of the animals. Thank you for taking on and caring for abandoned and abused farm animals. Please clean up the place and the animals a bit and you'll have my full support. read more

So happy to have come across an awesome fundraiser at this most special place (snuggle day!). With my cash donation in hand I filled my car with friends, and made the trek down to Henderson, CO. Turns out there were many many many folks with this same idea! Awesome! Cars were lined up as far as the eye could see (ok that might be a slight exaggeration . Cars were lined up on both sides of the road for about a quarter mile in either direction of farm). The place was bumpin! There was a greeter pig, tables selling shirts and candies, portable toilet, gang of vocal chickens & and hand washing station before you even passed through the gate! Once through the gates we were immediately in goat heaven. So many goats! They were all excited to meet new visitors and also see if we had treats for them (sadly we did not). Also within view of immediate entry were some some special piglets acclimating to their new safe home on the farm (they were in a little gated area with a 3-legged goat friend showing them the ropes). As we continued our journey into the farm we came across various sheep, calves, the most beautiful turkey I've ever seen and little ponies. I was excited and amazed to see the calves running and playing (though I did have to jump out of the way a time or two). Laughing ensued as overexcited goats nudged and gently pawed at fellow visitors with fresh veggies. Word to the wise: arrive early for a close parking spot, wear closed toed shoes you don't mind getting dirty, & bring some fresh veggies for the animals (they have size specifications so contact the farm ahead of time to ensure your treats are a safe size for the animals). This is one of my happy places. I am always very thankful to be able to spend an hour and a half with these amazing farm animals. The goats walk right up to you and just want to be petted. The cows stand at the gate waiting for their next rub. There is such a cuteness overload with the water buffalo. The owners of this place take very good care of these animals. read more

FYI: They are only open to the public during special events. Luckily, they have these pretty often (I believe it's every other Sunday). This place is magical! First of all, they do amazing things to help animals, including those with special needs. They take in abused, neglected, and unwanted animals and provide a safe and comfortable life for them. Second, their events are great. It's a large space with goats roaming freely seeking food and interaction (well, mostly food). Then there are multiple enclosures with pigs, llamas, horses, cows, sheep, chickens, and turkeys. You can bring fruits/veggies (make sure they are cut up for safety) to feed to the animals. There's a separate enclosure in the front for the baby animals too! It's only $5 to enter and you are always welcome to donate additional funds to help. It's fun for all ages and super adorable. TIPS/GUIDELINES: -If you're not sure if something can be fed to the animals, just ask. Cut everything up into bite-sized pieces in advance. They ask that you use reusable containers as well. -PROHIBITED FOODS: Grapes, potatoes, onions, raisins, stone fruits (cherries, peaches, etc.), bread or wheat products and absolutely nothing with animal products. -Bring tissues/napkins of some sort. I saw a few people get slimed by saliva when feeding and a piggy stuck his muddy snout into my camera lens. -Wear closed shoes. You're on a farm and there's goat poop on the ground. Also, maybe don't wear your Sunday best since you're closely interacting with animals and a goat can jump on you. -Children will have a blast here but watch your babies carefully because the goats are loose. They are harmless but can aggressively pursue food and it's possible that they can scare or even knock down a small child. Please don't let that dissuade you - they are wonderful. Just be aware. -They accept donations of used but clean sheets, blankets, and towels for the animals. They also accept donations of lettuce to feed to the chickens. -They have an e-mail sign-up list on their website but they are also active on Facebook and update all the event information there. -PARKING: They have a small lot but it fills up quickly. What a fun snuggle day! This farm will host an "open farm" every other Sunday. They only keep rescue animals so it's a great chance to go love on some animals. Today we saw goats, pigs, cows, donkeys, alpacas, chickens, and some very cute puppies! I highly recommend bringing food to feed the animals (approved list on their Facebook site). We brought apples, strawberries, celery, and cucumbers and all were gobbled up. The goats can be aggressive if you have food so be mindful if bringing small children as some were scared. I also recommend wearing clothes and shoes that can get muddy. I had several goats jump up on me out of excitement and therefore had mud on my coat and pants. It was great to get outside and show these animals some love! read more
