    Bronuts 09/28/18

Predating the arrival of Oh Doughnuts by approximately 18 months one can safely say Bronuts brought Artisan fried Dough to Manitoba, and with a location in walking distance from Clementine it was on the way out of town that Brett and Dylan Zahari's comfortable Café was visited and found to be excellent despite its surfer-dude name. Yet another fairly new business hoping to make Winnipeg's Exchange District a destination, aforementioned Clementine as well as deer + almond also earning accolades both local and national, it is immediately on entering the brightly lit space at 3-100 King Street that guests will notice a stark contrast from Amanda Kinden's Doughnuttery on Broadway, the clean layout and loquacious employees happy to discuss their concept and make recommendations amongst ten daily choices. A passion project for the locally raised brothers, time and research including baking classes in The Bay Area finally yielding a signature Brioche base that raises high with subtle egginess and plenty of Yeast, each Bronut is named after an unspecified Woman or Man and beginning first with a lady named Blair the quality of Glaze is immediately evident as the flavor of fresh Strawberries walks in-step with reduced Balsamic Vinegar. Continuing next with Friday's Special, a weekly tradition where Bronuts tries out new ideas, it probably will not surprise anyone that Caramel and Coffee pair nicely considering the success of Starbucks Macchiato while a transition to Cake shows versatility as two entirely different flavored bases came across moist and dense, Trixie like a warm bowl of Oats and Francine better than any fair or farm ring thanks to bold aromatics plus a lightly fruity linger. Rounding out the morning with filled and Fritter, the fact that Bronuts covers a wide-range of styles despite such a concise collection speaking volumes about the Zaharis' attention to detail, suffice it to say that even Peanut Butter and Jelly is benefitted by scratch made Jam plus whole salted Peanuts while "Brock" eschewed typical Fruit flavors and went all in on a Fritter that is grease-free but still hefty thanks to Dark Chocolate, Marshmallows and Nuts both on top and within.

    A few of the donuts!

Picked up a dozen of these beautiful donuts. One of each plus 3 more. Hard to decide which 3 to get doubles of. A little hard to spot with limited signage. The staff that were working were helpful and friendly. Big fan!!

I think I have come to the conclusion I don't like donuts. Even when they are done exceptionally well, as they are here, I just don't enjoy them like other people do. Someone is always bringing in donuts to work and I am at a "take it or leave" it point in my life and leave it 99% of the time. I only indulge if really hungry at this point, and never feel good about my choices after. My cousins wanted us to try this place so I went with the flow. My rhubarb something-or-other donut was fresh and delicious, my cold brew coffee was perfect, the staff was great and the place is really cool. I'm just not a good judge on this as I think this may end up being one of my last donuts ever... I just don't have any love for them. Booo on me.

I have been to Bronuts many many times, and I've loved it every time. The flavours are always really interesting and yummy. The staff are very nice, and the restaurant is very clean and so aesthetic. A few of my favourites have been the blueberry basil, pear pecan fritter, the rice crispy and the matcha donut.

This is always a destination when visiting Winnipeg. This visit I fell in love with their savory offering, which was tomato based topped with ricotta cheese. The staff are always kind and patient to explain whatever they're offering that day. The donuts are so flavorful - definitely not subtle. Can't wait see what's on their menu during my next visit.

Fresh in-house made yeast donuts that have a good consistency without being too dense. You can get a donut and coffee for $5. The madison (peanut butter and chocolate) was pretty good - definitely more PB than chocolate so it's not overly sweet. I split the Madison because one is too much for me considering the icing on it. You can get 10 donut holes for $2.75 - there were two flavours: vanilla glaze and cinnamon sugar. Both were good but I think the whole donuts tasted better than the holes....strange since it's the same dough but I think the whole donuts offer up a better consistency while the smaller pieces dried out a tad. There aren't a ton of flavours to choose from but there are specials from time to time along with the standbys like: Nutella dip (Nicolas), PB + Chocolate (Madison), Vanilla Glaze (Samuel), Cinnamon Sugar (Betty), and Lemon Poppyseed. Overall, nice place to grab to treat yourself to a donut. Located next to King + Bannatyne on King Street.

Pineapple upsidedown cake donut with a cherry and lemon meringue donut. Perfectly paired with iced coffee!

Outstanding small batch, artisan donuts in Winnipeg! Pineapple Upsidedown and Lemon Meringue donuts today. Not too sweet with tangy filling in the lemon. Toasted meringue on one and slivered almonds and a cherry on the pineapple flavored. Topped off with a sweet and bitter iced coffee = perfect morning starter.

Great hometown doughnut place, friendly staff, a little pricy, and I felt very hip eating at bronuts. I had the strawberry doughnut very dense and filling don't eat anything before you go it will full you up! But delicious :)

Good not great. A bit pricey, but a great location. This was the one of the only spots we could find open on a Sunday.

Fanciest donuts in town. You bring these to work or an event, and people will know that you are rich as well.

Amazing Donuts - not over sweet. The donuts are amazing and they only add a little sugar, so you know they are using quality ingredients.

I enjoyed their cinnamon donut. It had great flavour and a good level of yeast. Coffee was just so-so. Enjoy Winnipeg.

The staff and cashier were pretty friendly and helpful but their was an air of "I hope you behave…read morein here." The food is absolutely satisfying and delicious. They seem pretty open to different types of people and this brings me comfort. The first time I went inside this cute little doughnut shop I was on my way to volunteer at the animal shelter and I stopped here for a snack and it was late in the day and they didn't have much in stock. I tried a doughnut with berries inside and it was delicious. The shop smelled a bit weird though. The second time I stopped in here it was earlier in the day and they had a lot more variations and types of doughnuts. I even got to order a very tasty and warm rose tea with milk per instructions because I like tea with milk. The Eggnog flavoured doughnut was yummy and the vanilla cranberry doughnut was also very delightful.

If you've never been to Oh Doughnuts in Winnipeg, then you are missing out! They have two…read morelocations, and I had went to the Taylor one (the other is on Broadway). My usual go-to is their everything bagel doughnut, which I highly recommend. However today, I wanted to try their maple crueller and also ended up getting their crOHnut for the very first time. The maple crueller was soft and eggy, and the crOHnut was equally as soft and airy on the inside, tasting both sweet and salty. The crOHnuts are only available from Thurs-Sat. And the doughnut flavours usually changes daily so the best way to find out what flavours they have that day is by checking out their Instagram posts.

Krispy Kreme is finally in Winnipeg! It opened in June of this year. I don't like grand openings,…read moreso coming here a few weeks later is helpful. This location is at Outlet Collection Winnipeg. It's across from the Liquor Mart. Across the street is IKEA. It's the only Krispy Kreme in the prairies, between Delta, BC and Mississauga, ON. You can get your outlet therapy done first, and then down donuts after you're done. You can also do what I did and just drop by to check out the donuts. I decided to go through the drive-thru. There were many staffers outside guiding everyone. A male staffer asked me whether I was doing the walk-in or drive-thru approach. I said the latter. The former was roughly a 20-minute wait. The latter was double the time. It was 30°C. It was hot and humid. I also knew that rain was coming. I preferred being in an air-conditioned rental vehicle. I also don't have an umbrella. The wait wasn't bad. During the pandemic, I waited three hours for donuts at the Krispy Kreme drive-thru by my workplace in Mississauga. A 40-minute wait was nothing in comparison. It's also Winnipeg, with a smaller population than the greater Toronto area. Sure enough, while waiting in line, I saw dust blowing about. Dark clouds were now over us. The rain came pouring down. Naturally, it was my turn to order. It felt like I was ordering in a mini monsoon. The man over the speaker said to please wait. That's never good when rain is coming at you sideways and you have to crack your window open to speak. I ordered the following items: - A large iced vanilla coffee - Six donuts At the Mississauga location, when I say assorted, it means that staff choose the donuts on my behalf. I said assorted here and the man didn't get it. So, I went with getting three strawberry iced and three glazed raspberry-filled donuts. For the former, he thought that I had said chocolate. More time wasted. I let him know that I was half wet from the rain. I wish that I were kidding. I'm not. I really needed a towel. I got a nice woman at the window. I had to tap twice to pay. The machine did not recognize a drenched credit card. I had to dry it off with a napkin before it worked. I got my donuts and iced coffee. I thanked her and parked in front of the liquor store. I had a couple of donuts and waited for the downpour to stop a bit. The donuts were so fresh and yummy. My favourite is the raspberry-glazed donut. It's the yummy raspberry jelly filling with the glazed donut that makes this donut so special. I also love the strawberry iced donut. So fresh and delicious. Simply scrumptious. If I were here for another week, I'd get a dozen or more. I'm sort of glad that I'm not. I'd probably need a new wardrobe after inhaling a bunch of delicious donuts. The iced vanilla coffee was cold and hit the spot. There was little sugar in it, which was perfect for my needs. The vanilla wasn't as strong as I'd like the flavouring to be. It does have milk. If you are lactose-intolerant, you may want to order it without the dairy. I had a good experience, minus the downpour that accompanied me at the drive-thru. I'd love to return when there's no precipitation and get a dozen donuts next time. (256)
