Not many places like this left anymore. Years ago they served the many farms in the area. As the demographics have changed they have adapted to support small animals, pets, fish, etc. They have managed to survive despite the arrival of the big box stores. Really great pet store, much much better than the chains. The store workers are super knowledgeable, and the animals and plants are very healthy. All the fish I have gotten here are healthy and flourishing, even after a whole year. They have a really good selection of live aquatic plants, plus they will help you pick out the right one for your temperature and style tank. They are super helpful when picking out fish, and will help you find the right one for the size, temperature and tank mates. They also have a ton of enclosure goods for exotic pets as well, from hermit crabs to lizards to insects they have just about anything your are looking for, it is a great shop for exotic and non-exotic pet owners. On the other side of the store they have a huge chicken and wild bird section, they even have farm and garden tools. read more

I got my betta fish here and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they have a half-off deal on fish on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. They also sell eggs! It's been a real struggle to find enrichment and toys for my bunny but they had the biggest rabbit section I've seen yet (and believe me, I've been on the hunt). I have had similar experiences as the other reviewers as to the lack of customer service skills that the staff at Brooks possess. They rely on local customers for business so it puzzles me as to why they would not treat regular customers with respect. They have some great products in their store, just not great staff. I will say that sometimes the clerks are somewhat pleasant but many times in recent years, they are downright rude and ignorant. My final straw with them was my recent experience returning defective items and dead fish that had my blood pressure through the roof...all over a $3.49. I have been using Brooks for my supplies for the past 28 years but I am now making a point to pick up my farm and pet items elsewhere. Even the big box stores exceed Brooks in customer service and that standard is pretty low..... read more

I've been going to Brooks Feed and Farm for over 20 years, and has been my preferred chicken food vendor, and pet store in general. Memorial Day weekend on Saturday I went in for my chicken feed, and picked up a shepherd's hook for a memorial garden. Turned out it was the wrong size, so I brought it back to upgrade 1 week later - I brought my receipt, in case there was an issue. I was told I couldn't return the hook without the package of screws that came with it. I said there wasn't a package of screws that came with the hook, but the lady, who I've been dealing with for MANY years, said she couldn't return it without the screws. I offered to leave my stuff there and they could keep it all, but the lady caved eventually, and I paid another $40 for a much bigger, clearly more expensive shepherd's hook. I'm there every 2-3 weeks, and have been for so long, it seems ridiculous to 1) not take my word for it that I didn't get a hook with a probably $.5 package of stupid screws, and 2) they very well may have lost a regular customer over something so petty, but the principle about customers is that you value their business. I did NOT feel valued - I was quite offended by the whole situation, and am really considering going WAY out of my way to use a different feed store. Really disappointed that my local store would place such little value on a regular face. I've been in many times, and spent tons of money, bought chickens, played with the cats for adoption there, bought plants, dog and cat food, etc. read more

If they sell you dead fish you need to bring them back in with your receipt and a sample of your aquarium water. I bought 5 neons, 2 of which were dead by the time I got home. The other 3 died overnight. I have other neons that I have had for a long time and they are very healthy. This pissed me off that they expect me to drive back there with proof. I already flushed the dead fish and they expect a bag of dead fish and my aquarium water,even though my neons are fine and healthy that I have had for months. In other words, they don't trust my word or respect me as a customer. I will not buy from here again. read more

I have always liked this place. I live close by, and come here for pet food and locally produced eggs. The prices are reasonable, and until tonight I thought that the staff were friendly and, on the whole, helpful; although they have a tendency to get involved in personal discussions at the counter during slow spells, which makes customers who are not in on whatever gossip is being discussed feel a little awkward. Tonight, however, was my last visit to the store. I stopped by for a dozen eggs, picked up a little ball of twine that caught my eye on the way to the egg cooler, and took a while to select the eggs, based on size and price. On my back to the counter with my purchases, I opened the eggs to check that they were all intact. One in the corner was broken on top, and as I set it down on the counter I said, "Ahah! Good thing I checked!" The woman at the checkout said nothing, just stared at me as though I had insulted her. Figuring that she would want to set the broken egg aside, I left that carton on the counter and went back to get another, from which I thought I could get a good egg to replace the broken one. As I left the counter and walked the three or four steps to the egg cooler, a man with his children came up behind me in line. The clerk, acting annoyed, brought the carton containing the broken egg back to the cooler and put it on a bottom shelf, but instead of helping me put together a carton of unbroken eggs, she went back and waited on the man. Meanwhile, the second carton of eggs that I opened also had a broken one, so I found a level spot on top of some rawhide dog treats and transferred a good egg to the first carton, placing the broken one in the second carton with the other broken egg and setting that carton on the bottom shelf of the cooler. I took the first carton of eggs, now all intact, back to the counter just as the clerk was wrapping up the sale to the man with the children. She then waited on a man who appeared to be a vendor. Only then did she turn back to me. A man who seemed to be in charge was counting the money in the register all during this encounter. I was truly floored at how rude this woman was to me and how he did not seem to notice or care. I asked them if they were trying to close, but they said that no, it was not time to close. So I asked them why, then, were they being so incredibly rude. They both looked at me blankly. I explained that I would have expected some help with the broken egg, or at least an acknowledgement of some sort. They both pointed out that I had gotten out of line, so that it was only right that the next person be helped. They seemed to be saying that my choices as a customer were either to buy the eggs as they were or to lose my place in line. I said again that that was very rude, and I just did not understand it. The man in charge said, " I didn't know who you were," as though I thought myself more important than other customers. I told him that I was a customer, and expected to be treated as a customer, and that I could not believe that neither of them had even given a hint of an apology during our conversation. He then said, "I'm sorry, I hope that you are having a better day the next time you come in." I told him that he should be sorry, and that I would not be in again. What was this about? Why have retail businesses lost sight of the fact that their customers are their bread and butter? I worked for many years in retail grocery sales, and although I have seen the old adage about the customer always being right losing its teeth over the years, the one thing that was always stressed was that the customer in front of you is your priority, and that your job is to be respectful and courteous and to help him or her and then go on to the next customer and do the same. When a customer has a complaint, it is in the interests of the business to listen to that complaint and to try to make things better. You apologize if you are in the wrong, even if you were not being purposefully rude. You don't try to make the customer feel that the whole thing was his or her fault. I guess that these two people will not be sorry to lose me as a customer. It won't make or break them or the business. They obviously thought that I was out of my mind. If they treat other customers this way, however, they may find that more people stop coming back. Some of those people may be like me, just small-time (although frequent) clients. Some customers may be there for the first time, though; and although the employees may not "know who they are" these first timers might be looking for a feed store at which to drop a lot of cash on a regular basis, depending upon their first impressions.
