Full disclosure: I'm not really a wine bar kind of guy. I'm also not much of a first date kind of guy these days, either. (After all, the wife wouldn't be too happy about that one.) And with Brookvin being the proper, go-to wine bar / first-date spot in Park Slope, what the hell could I have to say about this place, you ask? Surprisingly, a good deal. I need to start off with the food, most likely an afterthought to all you winos out there. The Cured Salmon, Organic Bibb Lettuce epitomizes summer salad. It's got avocado and pink grapefruit supremes, tossed with roasted shallot vinaigrette and a few cracks of black pepper, and is absolutely delicious. I've frankly never had this combination of fruit, fish, and foliage on a plate like this before, and the result was both refreshing and satisfying. I wish I could recreate this all at home, as I am, uh, somewhat obsessed. Some second-tier small plates picks are their Vermont Cheddar Mac and Cheese (note, only $5 during happy hour) and German Meatballs. Make sure your forkfuls for the latter include the braised sauerkraut and dill butter, otherwise the balls are a little dry (still not something I'd steer you away from). But I'm sure you want to hear more about the booze. The wine list is extensive, as expected. But they also have a small list of cocktails and beer (draft and bottles). The White Sangria (wine-based, I know, take it easy) is outstanding, thirst-quenching, and served in a pint glass, with a giant fruit skewer. I could drink (read: chug) these guys for days. And now we come to the back garden, finally - Brookvin's big sell. With its intimate set-up, soft music, and strewn lighting, it's romantic, idyllic, and instantly no shock to you (or your wining and dining prospect) that this spot is Park Slope's most in-demand wingman. Basically, if you can't close here, it's you, not Brookvin (just sayin'). Hell, it just may even ignite some sparks for us spoken-for, non-winos. TL;DR: I love this place. The service is fantastic and there's an extensive list of wines and a great patio for summer nights. Kitchen and patio are open late until midnight as well. My friends and I dropped by after seeing the Philharmonic in Prospect Park. There was a 30 minute wait for a patio table, but we got seats at the bar to wait and the waiter told us he could let us know when a table opened up in back (which he remembered and did so - it was super thoughtful of him). The bartender rocked and let us try very generous portions of the rosés we were interested in; we only asked for three but I'm sure he would have let us try others if we were interested. We all loved the draft Austrian rosé and got a glass, but they had a super long list of others that also looked intriguing. After about 30 mins, they moved us to a table in back and gave us complimentary bread; we also ordered tartufo cheese - on the very knowledgeable recs of a waiter - which was out of this world. even though we didn't order much, they still gave us lovely service. 10/10 experience in my book. read more

I'd like to share a bit about my experience with Bartender Awesome. But firstly -- I can think of maaaaaybe two reviews I've written right after said experience at said establishment. But there's always a reason for it, and it's always because MY FAITH IN HUMANITY IS RENEWED. This is one of those reviews. Jesus AWESOME Christ. Thank you, bartender, for being maybe the nicest human being on the planet, not looking at me strangely when I requested "something red, but not so acid-y, maybe?" and accommodating myself and my friend with absolute knowledgeableness (yeah that's right! I just made up a word that I thought was better than the somewhat pedestrian "knowledgeable") and total friendliness. Even after I apologized for my shitty choice of adjectives, Bartender Awesome was totally not deterred and offered us both tastes of what he'd thought we'd like. And he was right, for crying out loud! (If you think that's easy, you haven't met me when I get to the inevitable point in the evening when I start whining for a Guinness.) As for the food: The Brooklyn ricotta tartine with escarole and garlic confit was -- for lack of a better term at the current moment -- absolutely badass. Bartender wasn't lying when he said a) it was perfect for autumn and b) if would go perfectly with my red wine. Why do you have to be right all the time, Bartender Awesome? This place is cute and they have a very nice outdoor patio, but a word to the wise: It's EXPENSIVE!!! $11 for a GLASS of the house red wine. What?!? $9 for 6 super thin slices of salami (doesn't come with bread or cheese) $9 for a delicious tartine (toast, essentially with various cheese/veggies) Don't get me wrong, the food is tasty, but don't go there hungry, because you will leave wanting more food, and your wallet will be considerably lighter. My boyfriend and I went here on Friday night... I think we saw the happy hour menu which *is* reasonable-- $5 for a glass of wine, $5 for a tartine. Unfortunately by the time we sat down we realized happy hour was over. So our loss. Five girls, deprived of their nectar, running on fumes...what are they to do? Brookvin to the rescue. Well, really, it's a certain newbie Brooklyn resident that was the heroine, but that really doesn't matter. We were thirsty, Brookvin was accommodating, who are we to not go. A fabulous assortment of bottles presented itself to us (at totally reasonable prices...$22 for a bottle of a lovely chilled rose? Sign us up...and again...and again), how could we even choose only a glass. We cozied into a perfect little area, lights aglow. Service was undeniably perfect. Our server not only attended to our needs very well, but also made some solid suggestions, and didn't balk when we ordered that third bottle shortly before they closed. I have no comments on the food, other than we all eyeballed what turned out to be an employee's sandwich hanging out at the kitchen area. I'd go back for some food, definitely. You know what? When we parted ways with Brookvin, we weren't so thirsty anymore. How funny. read more

Park Slope's official first date spot. Your date might be awesome or terrible but you can be damn sure you'll have an excellent selection of wines, cozy ambiance and some tasty plates of charcuterie and cheeses to go with your fun night. Being an entry-level wine drinker (craft beer is my domain) I like this place because the menu is pretty simple and most of the wines come with a brief description. If you aren't sure what you want just tell the bartender or server what you feel like tasting and they'll hook you up. Two must haves: - The mac and cheese - Prosciutto (it's like meaty butter) It gets pretty busy so there might be a wait but I've never seen the place really packed and service has been great the couple times I've been. The first time I came here must have been dinner theatre night because I watched one of the chefs have a complete blowup in the small kitchen, storm out of said kitchen with a knife and his coat and go on a small tirade about the restaurant before walking out the door. I've walked past this place so many times but had yet to actually go in. My bf, who doesn't even live in the area, suggested this place so I met him. I came in on a busy Friday night yet he still managed to get a table for us. This place is a lot larger than I had imagined it. It just looks so small from the outside. However it extends far back and even has a little outdoor area (which was obviously closed when I went). They have an extensive wine list. They offer a few cocktails as well. I had a honey thyme whiskey sour type cocktail ($10) and it was actually sweeter than the rose wine I ordered which was $8. They have 2-3 draft beers and a few bottle beers as well. We ordered the maple pecans, pork belly and the chicken pot pie. Maple pecans were amazing, they were little $4 snacks. Pork belly was good too not a huge portion but enough to keep you full. It tasted a little more like honey ham instead of a pork belly dish. Chicken pot pie came with a side salad. There was a little too much olive oil on the salad for me, salt on it helped a bit but I couldn't finish the rest of it. Chicken pot pie was delicious though. I was happily full at the end of the meal. They do offer dessert but we were full from the drinks and food. I love the casual yet classy and homey vibe this place gives off. Simple menu, good wines, good lighting, good athmposhere. Can not ask for more.....well actually..... one of my all time favourite wines is La Spinetta. Historical winery in northen italy (piemonte), that makes amazing Barolo, Barbera and Barbarersco. Happens to be one of the most prized winery in italy for excellent wines (1). Our choice for the night had to be a half bottle, so we find, La Spinetta, Barbera Ca del Bosco at the reasonable price of $26. This makes me happy. Very happy. The menu is simple, a few salads, couple of sandwiches and selections of cuts and cheeses. You should not expect more from a wine bar. I do need to note the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Salad was made from pea shoots and fresh peas. It tasted as it freshly picked or purchased at the local farmes market the same morning. The ham sandwich is also worth mentioning. Good bread, good ham good cheese...and decadently buttery. Note to the restaurant: if would be good to have a mix plate of cheese and/or hams rather than single servings. Notes: (1) - Gambero Rosso is the most authoritative and comprehensive guide to italian wines. It rates excellent wines worth of a mention with 1, 2 or 3 goblets. La Spinetta (second only to Gaia) is the winery that has accumulated the most 3 goblets. read more

Dimly lit with wine selections ON TAP! DRINKS: Choose from cocktails, wine on tap, or bottle wine. Large selection, average priced. I would suggest getting there for happy hour. FOOD: Selection of meat and cheese that comes with a variety of jams and toast. Toast is tasty and lightly coated with olive oil. I'm a carb girl, but of course the cheese is good too. Not the biggest fan of the mushroom one though, but that could be because I don't like mushrooms :) The descriptions explain the body and firmness of the cheese, as well as the flavor notes. On a Monday night in late May I ended up in Brookvin to begin a night out in the South Slope. I had heard about the Brookvin's ridiculous all-night Monday happy hour and just had to check out what it was all about. Brookvin had a an impressive backyard that was perfect for a table of two (or four, but no more) on a ridiculously warm spring night. We kept it simple & enjoyed the ambiance with a couple of glasses wine, a sample of the tartines, and of course...an order of the Vermont Mac & Cheese. Everything from the wine & food to the service was spot on. After a harrowing journey to Times Square, my 4 pals and I were in search of one last stop, a few drinks to block out the oddities, neon lights, chaos, etc. A quick trip back to the homeland landed us at Brookvin. As a former "know-it-all" in Chicago when it came to "where to eat/drink/play" I will admit I'm still figuring it all out in NYC, and may be forever really. But, one thing I did know: I REALLY liked Brookvin on the first visit and it was surely worth a try. We rolled in around 11pm, saddled up with a few bottles of whites and pinks at very affordable prices, snagged the last bit of seating room, and drank our little hearts out until last call. Oh wait, there was no last call!? Nope, just some friendly bartenders patiently waiting for us to exit. No rushing or cajoling to take our party elsewhere...so of course we decided on our own accord that they'd like to go home, so we sipped the last bits of wine, shared the last tings of gossip and made our way back to the crashpad. This presented an odd challenge for me. I like the place and would probably give it another star except for one thing... the vibe was a bit too... well behaved. Everything is clean, flawless, with a nice selection of food and bevs and a super-friendly staff. But it was all too polite and overly manicured. It's a cute place to get a glass of wine, although it is pretty expensive. The food is also expensive for what you get. A cheese is $9, and you literally get a small slice. This is a recurring theme with the pickle plate, and pate. There are restaurants that give you more complimentary pate than what you pay for here. The pork belly salad came with three tiny pieces, lucky for them it is so dark so you might not see what you're getting. The mac with bacon was good, but nothing special. The bbq sliders were actually good and probably the best quality you can get from the menu. I also liked the bread pudding, which was a drenched piece of sourdough, almost like a tres leches cake. The atmosphere here was totally worth the 20 minute trek from the subway station in 4 inch heels. Totally worth it. Located in one of the most pleasant parts of Brooklyn aka South Slope, Brookvin is a gorgeous gem. The staff is friendly and accommodating, the seating is plenty and spread out (with small candle-lit tables for two) and there's even a nice backyard area! The kitchen is small but the charcuterie offerings smelled so heavenly wafting from that little grill that I was salivating. The wine list is not super extensive but features some of the key faves: Riesling, Pinot Noir, Bordeaux. For what it's marketed as (a wine bar), it's exactly what you want: low-key atmosphere, delicious chilled wine, and an ambiance that makes even the most boisterous person want to just chill out for a minute or something and appreciate the beauty that is a serene night in Brooklyn. read more

This place is kind of a hole in the wall. This place has really good meats and cheeses. Their platters are also really nice with different jams, pickles, and mustard. I really like the prosciutto. This cozy and quaint wine bar has personality and lives up to its expectations. They sell many wines by the glass. There is something for everyone. And if you don't dig wine, they have a fully stocked bar. The food menu is small but each dish packs a punch! The flavors are intense and the food is fresh. After talking about some of the dishes with the barman, I found out that they get a whole pig and don't waste it. So they make their own sausage (so good!). If you haven't checked this place out, you should. It's a great place for a quiet nite of enjoying good food and company. I can't wait to go back for thirds. I met a friend here for a weeknight happy hour. It's a cute little restaurant-wine bar with a long bar and a handful of table seating indoors. Given that it was finally not 90+ degrees and pleasant for once, we chose to sit on the beautiful back garden area, which was covered and had many tables that could be combined or separated for larger or smaller groups. The happy hour menu offered $6 glasses of wine (1 red, 1 white, 1 rose) and $5 beers, as well as the most delicious $5 mac and cheese (get this!!!). We each got a glass of rose and shared a small mac and cheese skillet (can't emphasize how delicious this is!!). Keeping with our cheese theme, we also got the two cheese plate (boucheron and brie) and found this to be delicious as well. All the cheese plates can be customized (1 cheese is $9, 2 for $16, 3 for $23) and come with toasts. The charcuterie plates can be ordered in a similar fashion and seemed to be popular as well. The menu also had some salads, soups, entrees, and snacks (olives, almonds, pickles, etc) to choose from. It's a small menu but offers a variety that even a pickier guest could find something to try. We truly enjoyed our time here and it's in my opinion one of the better wine bars in Brooklyn in terms of ambiance, selection, and food. The main reason I'm knocking a star is that despite the friendliness and kindness of the staff, service was generally slow and inconsistent (we had to ask numerous times for a few things) and could be improved. It's taken me nearly a year of living in Park Slope to make it to this place. What a loss for me. Brookvin is great. Intimate, but spacious enough to kick back and spread your legs a bit. They have a very nice garden out back, too. Excellent happy hour deals, fantastic wine list, and a very tasty menu of small plates. Among other things, we tried the rosé, the lambrusco and the petite sirah. For sustenance, we tried a few of the crostini, the pulled pork sandwich, and the mac & cheese (with bacon, duh). The lambrusco and the mac & cheese stand out in my mind. Sadly, the famous ham sandwich that I was so looking forward to was not on the menu. Apparently the food offerings are seasonal, so perhaps it will return once the mercury drops a bit. Hope hope. Will def be back, though. read more

Maybe I'm a sucker for a well written menu. Really, putting a few key descriptive phrases on paper can do a long way towards easing people into your joint. I don't know anything about wine. I'm not a dolt, but seeing a wine list that is just a list of names isn't helpful...so luckily, [brook vin] doesn't do anything like that. They serve by the glass, bottle, & half bottle; I can see the latter suggestion being really appealing. The food is good too; I got the chicken pot pie & the potato tartine; be advised that the portions aren't huge, so don't come here looking for dinner or rather, if you do, order more than one appetizer each. I went there for the first time last night and loved it! I got a Petit Shiraz that was earthy and delicious, as well as a single cheese. I was a little hesitant over the cheese price at first ($10 for only one cheese) but they give you an incredibly generous serving and a ton of bread. The waiter was also kind enough to bundle my cheese and my roommates charcuterie together to save some money, in addition to letting us sample the wine before ordering.
