Garage door spring broke, fifteen+ years of using Broten and thinking of no other, first starts with a $300+ emergency fee warning at 5pm on weekday. Not good .... We then note that we have a lifetime warranty on springs. Nice ... We had explored another local small business with great service records and his pricing was less than a hundred difference. Probably should have gave him the deal in retrospect. The price of labor is quoted as over 300 now alone for maybe an hours work with Broten. The others were quite a deal less. Instead we set appointment for 2 business days later and request an early morning appt. "We only get to your area in afternoon is offered and window is 11am-3pm". You know it would be like winning lotto to get the early visit this Friday. Client initiated call to make sure we are still on a roster as holiday weekend coming. Tech arrived after 130pm. Tech is wonderful, Knowledgeable and loves working for Broten. His work was efficient and very little mess which is a plus for tech again. So this will likely be last use of Broten. We have purchased front doors, garage doors, motors and more over many years. It is now clear the only value and respect of revisit is the consumers. Only the lifetime spring warranty is of any benefit to use here. Truly ashame .... we suggest now looking elsewhere too. A Great New Motor When I bought my house 6 years ago, it came with a Broten Garage door. 3 Years ago, the spring broke. I we had Broten come out and replace it along with new nylon wheels. A few weeks back, the door would stop intermittently going up or down. I called them back and Ronald, the same service rep from 3 years ago showed me what the problems were. By checking the serial number he let me know the unit was over 15 years old. He gave me my options and I decided to go ahead and purchase a new motor. Bottom line, I love it. I have a 15- your warranty on my garage door that was installed about 12 years ago. The door starts to tarnish or rust through at the creases of the panels. I called them to come to a site inspection where the inspector says absolutely it should be covered.and the company tell me that it's not under warranty because I did not properly. I followed all maintenance instructions of how to clean and maintain the door. I am not near any type of salty water that would create corrosion. When I called a dispute the decision, of course I can't get a call back. I am always told that the person in charge is out for the day and will return my call. I never get a call back. I suppose this is how these companies make their money on warranties and people that actually care about what their house looks like replace the garage door regardless. Such a scam! read more

I had Broten repair my garage door opener about 15 years ago and I recall them doing a good job so when my garage door springs broken recently, I called them again knowing I would be in good hands. The person who answered the phone communicated well and was knowledgeable. She scheduled a visit for the following day. The service guys were prompt and I was surprised to find out that even though it was so old, my springs were still under warranty and I would only incur a cost for labor. They checked the whole system and recommended the coils be replaced since they were old and rusted. I paid to have that done but decided to wait on the motor due to the expense. They said it was old and losing its power but still working. I appreciate that they didn't do a hard pressure sell. In fact, they were very courteous and obviously there to help. I doubt Broten is the least expensive company in Broward that will do a good job, but they are reliable, professional, fair and strive to satisfy and please their customers. We recently contacted Broten to install a Hurricane Garage Door for our villa. The sales rep, Kenny, was on time personable and responsive. The team that installed the door was on time, polite and cleaned up after the door was installed. After a few days we realized that one of the sensors was out of alignment, probably due to another contractor painting the door for us. Within 2 days a Broten tech, Gary was at the house. We have been Broten customers for almost 20 years & last Friday we needed to make an "emergency" call for their services. Our garage door would not go down & since we are remodeling our home, vendors left many expensive tools in our home. We could not wait for it to be repaired during normal working hours. My wife made the call; the answering service told her the after hours charges & they dispatched a tech named Leo. He replaced the failing sensor & the garage door was fixed. That all went well. However, the next morning I learned that Broten's emergency fee just to show up at our home, before even working on the problem, was $415.00. I found that outrageous & called the local office. I was told the Manager on Duty, Kimberly, was busy but would return my call. She did not call back on Saturday. Monday came & went with no call from Kimberly. I waited until around 3pm on Tuesday & was able to reach Kimberly who apologized for not calling back on Saturday & that Monday was her day off. I explained to Kimberly that the $415 fee to just show up was outrageous & that I wasn't looking for any money returned to us because my wife agreed to the $415. I know of no other industry whether it be an electrician or plumber or roofer etc charging that kind of fee just to show up. Kimberly listened & relayed that she would pass along my comments to her Director. In the meantime & for my own edification, I contacted 3 of Broten's competitors to see if they charged similar fees. They did not. One charged $149 to come but that fee would be part of any repair cost applied to the repair. It confirmed my stance the Broten fee was excessive during an emergency situation for a long time customer who had purchased 2 brand new garage doors from them over the years. On Wednesday of this week, Kimberly's supervisor & Director of Sales named Chris contacted me. He was aware of my concerns & during our conversation I relayed my findings regarding his competitors & how they addressed emergency situations. I believe he was surprised by my findings & I suggested he make the same cold calls as I so that he could confirm my comments. We left it with Chris' commitment to bring up the subject with Broten's "Leadership Team" of which is a member. He made no promises that a change would be made for future customers in an emergency situation but did commit to calling me back with his findings. I agreed not to post my experience here on YELP until Friday of this week & he agreed that was fair. Chris, the Broten Director of Sales, never called me back. He didn't keep his word & has lost me as customer. Broten made a business decision not to change their emergency service fees & we learned a big lesson that there are MANY MANY smaller companies that will provide repair services for a much more reasonable price. So I am keeping my word & posting this review. Broten is the epitome of "bigger is not necessarily better." Customers considering using Broten, you have been forewarned. read more

My garage door was broken for a year. I finally purchased the 3/4 horse motor ($199) and service order ($129) from Home Depot in July. Two weeks later, the contractor showed up and pointed out that my springs are broken and need to be fixed. They were going to charge me $700 to fix the springs. That is when I made my first call to Broten, they sent out Arturo the same afternoon. Arturo showed me the tension needs to be changed but the springs was not broken. He then showed me what a broken spring look like. He was polite, professional and sprayed my garage door with lubricant. After much thinking, I returned the motor and cancelled the service order with Home Depot. I called Broten and schedule the installation appointment. Arturo came on-time. He is competent, courteous and efficient. The total installation cost is $885 minus the initial service fee $135 from a week ago. I love my new garage door. Their installation team mismeasured the door opening twice and as result the wrong door was ordered. Broten attempted to explain away their error by stating that my garage opening is unusual and when I replied "isn't that why your people measured the door" they sheepishly answered they had fired their involved employees. Now with the door installed, one of the glass panes is broken from unknown cause. I called Broten two weeks ago and no satisfactory response. Excuses abound: ranging from that's not Brotens problem, we didn't manufacture the door, we have bad relations with the door manufacturer Evo and Evo won't call us back, call a "glazier" to replace the window" on and on and on over a period of a wasted two weeks of run around. I wrote a previous review three years ago, while I was living in Coral Springs. At that time they rated 5 stars. Now, in 2020, I am living in Delray Beach and needed to replace the garage door on my new home. Every new neighbor had a recomendation; I, however, have only one company with whom I am consistently impressed - both in their product and customer service. So, I called Broten. Willie and Andreas showed up promptly at 9AM. In conversation, Willie discovered that my work order was incomplete - that a new outside keypad was not included. Because this is a new home for me, and it has been empty for awhile, I wanted everything - much like my locks - changed. Understanding my cincern, Willie immediately called his supervisor, Tom O'Reilly, who said he was in the area and would bring over an outside keypad - which he did - in less than thirty minutes. In this day and age, where Covid is so often used as an excuse for poor customer service and bungled work orders, THIS in itself was a refreshing change! And speaking of Covid, I was impressed with all three gentlemen's attention to cleanliness, use of masks and social distancing. Willie patiently walked this old lady through the new technology involved; he synced the system with my car and my phone. In short, Broten has once again proven its worth. Called Broten to repair my garage door. The service techs were nice and they diagnosed the issue as a broken spring. To remove the spring, they had to cut through the metal shaft and the drums. Then they verbally provided me with a quote to replace all three items for around $800 . Not realizing it would be so expensive to repair this issue, I decided to call my home warranty company that covered it entirely, so I declined Broten's estimate and called the insurance company instead. When they arrived, they denied my claim because the Broten team had taken the broken parts with them the day they had diagnosed the issue. Unfortunately, I had to go back to Broten thinking they would help me out after preventing me from getting it fixed by my warranty company. I was then presented with a bill OVER $1000. Understandably, I was upset to be having to pay anything at all because if they had left the parts, it would have been covered by the insurance company. When I spoke with Broten's managers (who spoke with the owner), they were adamant that I would have to pay full price for all (marked up) parts, but offered discounted labor (about $150 in value - basically 10-15% off! They cost me $950 and refused to discount their services more than a small percentage, which I found to be a poor decision. Bad customer service and poor decision making. They lost a customer and I certainly won't be saying nice things about them to anyone who asks. read more

The spring broke on our garage door I contacted Broten to replace the spring they said they would send somebody out the next day. They called the next day to confirm and said if they didn't have the product in stock it would take two weeks. They neglected to tell me that it would be $75 charge regardless. I offered to send pictures to see if they had the product in stock as I could not wait two weeks I needed it done as soon as possible it did not matter about the price. I ended up calling a smaller company who said they could be there to fix it in three hours no other questions asked and I'm very glad I did. More focus should be on solving the clients issues not nickel and diming them prior to any service rendered. read more

My family has frequently used Broten to service the garage doors at our properties in Pembroke Pines, and we have never had a negative situation. This time I called them because the cables on one side of the door at my house broke and the spring fell. They came quickly as usual. The reason I am giving them a negative review is because this time all they did was replace the cables, put the same spring back in place, and charged me $272.00; without further explanation of the job. I did some research after the fact and evidently they ripped me off. UPDATE -- Got a call from Greg of Broten a few hours after posting the review. He clarified about the job done in my house and explained the reasons behind the costs of parts and labor. I appreciate the courtesy call. My garage door stopped working a few days before my plans to leave town. I dreaded the day when this would occur. The garage door and motor are about 18 years old. They have survived way beyond their useful life. And I feared I would have to get a new motor. I hate these upkeep expenses! Called Broton on a Saturday to schedule the service appointment. The rep was efficient, although a bit abrupt, and did not offer information on their minimum service call rate ($105. For first 1/2hour) until I specifically inquired. Appointment was set for Monday from 12- 4 pm. Was advised I would receive a call 1/2 hour before tech was due to arrive. Received a call Monday morning at 8:50 advising tech was in the way. No, said I, the appointment was for the 12 noon to 4:00 pm slot. Oh, said she, OK. Hmm, wondered me, will they show up this afternoon? Received call at around 2:45 that tech was on his way and he shows up at 3:08. So far, good. Tech is Brian, worked fast and smart in assessing and diagnosing the problem - new photocell sensors and the wiring to the motor. He lubed and cleaned the track and finished the job within one hour. I reminded him of the 10% senior discount (the rep who made the appointment said she would note it - she had not) and after giving him a generous tip, he and I were both pleased. So, no new motor needed, but I still got an estimate for one so I'll know what expect when the time comes. I'd call Broton again if I needed service. Oh, the warranty is only 30 days and I wondered to myself why. Like if the photocells have such a limited life, why even bother to give it a 30 day warranty? What happened to one year or 6 months?
