This cute independent cafe was recommended to us for brunch and boy were we glad we went! They have gorgeous baked goods in the morning, a simple but very different breakfast menu and a selection of sandwiches, salads and soups at lunch. We shared semolina pancakes (Moroccan-style light semolina pancakes ("beghrir"), served with a sweet ricotta crème, our summery berry & rose compote, fresh mint & our hazelnut-almond praline) which were to die for! The hint of rose with the fresh mint made the whole dish! We also shared the Turkish Eggs Mememen (eggs scrambled with tomato & roast peppers, dressed with a light feta & black olive yogurt with fresh herbs, chilli & red onion -on sourdough toast with baby spinach leaves) which was delicious but I couldn't handle the whole dish (luckily!). I think because of all the hype about this place I was expecting a little more. It is a lovely place and buzzing with life but I was bowled over like other reviewers. My other half was impressed though so maybe just me! We both had the pulled pork which was nice and he raved about the 3FE coffee. We had a space at the window which is great for watching people go by and I loved the quirky touches to the decor etc. Will go back again to give it another go. Very busy place and staff did try to seat the queue really quickly which was impressive. read more

Probably the best coffee I had in Dublin and easily the best scone I've tried on my life. Fruit and ginger inside served with a (homemade?) orange butter and raspberry jam. Simply fantastic. Do note that there are actually TWO shops, Brother Hubbard and Little Brother. The former is a place to sit and enjoy your cup and breakfast, whereas the second is intended to be strictly grab and go. They're very nice about it, but if you want to sit and enjoy, make sure you head into Brother Hubbard. read more

First time having brunch here last weekend. Food was super tasty, can not recommend it highly enough. Be prepared to queue, although we were lucky, only had to wait about 10 minutes. We were seated in the back area, which was a bit chilly. Heaters weren't much more than bright lights, or perhaps that's exactly what they were :/ Blankets were provided at these benches. Service was excellent and staff very attentive. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of the cold where my friend and I were seated, also my food went cold quicker than I would have liked as a result. Oh yes, this got the first 5 stars from me! What qualifies as 5 stars in my book? A place that is going under "bring every visitor here" list. Not only are all the previous raving reviews right on spot, the atmosphere, staff, food, coffee and did I mention the sweets, were absolutely to par! I had the open salmon sandwich with an mint iced tea. First of all, coming from California, one thing I miss the most is fresh brewed unsweetened iced tea. This was AMAZING and hit the spot. The food was mouth watering delicious and every bite was followed by "this is so good." My partner had eggs with chorizo and hands down, best chorizo I've had in Dublin. Tasty, crisp and full of flavor. The lovely dessert display makes it hard to say no, so of course we got the cinnamon walnut scroll, add a flat white to that and call it a day, I can die happy now. I'm coming back here again and again and again until I've tried everything on the menu, twice. read more

The sign outside says "this is the cafe you've been looking for" and it's not wrong. From the decor to the music, it's all well thought out and the right choice. Since they opened the extension earlier this year, there is a lot more room which makes Bro Hub a more viable lunch time option, there used to be a high chance of being turned away at lunch time due to lack of space. Everything works perfectly here. Bruno and the other staff will serve you an amazing coffee, the way it's meant to be brewed. Service is always efficient and delivered with a pleasant manner. The food deserves a paragraph of its own. I can't think of a better take away sandwich in the city centre for under €5 than one of their tasty regulars. There are always three salad options for those trying to be a bit healthier. At the weekend they have the award winning pulled pork sandwich and an incredible croque-monsieur. This cafe has been at the vanguard of the resurgent Capel street cool scene in recent years, more power to it. read more

I don't write a lot of reviews, but the staff at Brother Hubbard for brunch last Saturday were so helpful and accommodating that I just have to sing their praises. We had a baby at our table and the staff immediately made sure we had a convenient table for the pram to fit, etc. When our table time was up and the next group needed to be seated, they offered to seat us somewhere else or to continue feeding the little one in the waiting area. I don't know if words can really express how much I love this cafe. Everything about it is great. Great food, great tea, great coffee, amazing hot chocolate. Don't even get me started on the cinnamon scrolls. Brunch, but not as you know it is fab, lunch is delish. Can't wait for the supper menu! This is the place I always recommend to tourists to get a taste of modern Dublin for lunch! Food is that gorgeous mix, fresh and aromatic as something out of an Ottolenghi cook-book,but with an Irish and Dublin edge, heart and substance!! Perfect for lunch, though on the more expensive side of it if you are thinking cheap, but it is value for money. Only downside, the coffee, while very good, is not to my taste, its that bitter 3FE stuff I think. Good for a flat white, but not an americano. Bro Hub now serve breakfast. The toast and different jams/marmalades are great. Have yet to try more of the breakfast things, but they sound great. As for lunchtime things, during the week I had the sandwich and salad combo for €6.50. I had a beef, rocket, tomato, horseradish ciabata and lentil,butternut squash and celery salad. Omnomnom. The coffee is still as wonderful as ever. I find myself going here a few times a week. They now also have loyalty cards which is great! read more

So I've had Brother Hubbard saved for a little while but don't often make it to places for brunch as I can easily make breakfast at home and skip the task of getting ready. Well Sunday started shaping up to be a beautiful day so J and I threw on our walking shoes and headed North. We stopped in various places along the way but before I knew it we had made it to the river which meant I had the perfect excuse to try one of the many places I had saved around O'Connell. I glanced at the list and decided we should start with Brother Hubbard but given that it was peak brunch time we might not get a table. When we arrived luck was on our side - there was a shared table in the courtyard so we could be seated immediately AND continue enjoying the weather. Once seated J ordered the orange juice and I asked for the raspberry, apple and rose drink. My juice was really nice but you can't be scared of rose water! I was torn between the Eggs Menemen and the Beans & Pulled Pork special. The waitress suggested the eggs so I went with that and J ordered the Semolina Pancakes. While we waited we took in the restaurant - very fun atmosphere with a mixed crowd. Plate after plate came by us so we were drooling by the time our food came out. The waitress's recommendation was spot on. Crispy pieces of sourdough with olive oil and a light scrambled egg mixture with feta, parsley, chorizo, tomato sauce and various seasonings. It tasted wonderful and was just what I wanted mid-day. J's pancakes were a slam dunk. The pancakes were extremely light and fluffy and were topped with a lightly sweetened ricotta mixture, a berry and rose compote and some delicious kind of praline. These were definitely unlike any pancakes I have had and they seemed light enough that you wouldn't feel sickly full afterward. We loved our experience at Brother Hubbard and the prices were super reasonable. Even if you don't live nearby - give this place a shot. 4.5 place rounded up for uniqueness. read more

LOVE Brother Hubbard. It is my go-to place to bring guests out for lunch. My husband and I frequently sit out in their covered patio space, and just LOVE LOVE LOVE their food. My favourite is the hummus and roasted veg sandwich. SO many good flavours and incredibly filling. I also recommend their Green tea lemonade. The problem with being an aspirational foodie is that you think you know it all. So, here goes. Everything about the concept here is five stars in my book. It's fresh food made with passion by people who take with due gravity the serving of brekkie and lunch to the check shirt-wearing masses. It's 'clever use' philosophy (empty baking powder jars for sugar, why not?) underpins the slightly make and do/recycle-cool feel of the place, carried through in the furnishings and general vibe. The menu is well judged, offering a reasonable but contained amount of choice. The soup is delicious. The salad plate, which I've had a few times, is the beginning of my foodie problem. For nearly ten euros, in a cramped eating space at a tiny table, or shared one, I want my three salads to be a meal. I want my hummus accompaniment to be at least a tablespoon, because hummus doesn't do teaspoonfuls, it shouldn't even be asked to. It's like asking a drag queen to go on stage without fake eyelashes, or a half scoop of ice cream to be served. Carrot hummus, no less. More, please. For flavour, these guys get full marks. Freshness is key, flavours are zingy and front and centre but the balance remains subtle. Balance of ingredients and content is where I'd beg to differ with the salad minds behind these creations. And maybe then my issue with portion size would be eliminated. Example: a salad of cucumber in large chunks - always something of a tightrope being walked here in my book, and seeds and zingy dressing aren't enough, I want something to balance the texture and offer bulk (feta/olives?). Cous cous, when I put a forkful of that lovely carb in my mouth, I don't want celery, cucumber's equally diet-obsessed cousin, to be the main texture and taste. And red cabbage slaw - yes, more please, but I need some carbs, man! And those little slices of bread aren't enough. I think these guys could take a leaf out of Cornucopia's book here. Deserts are excellent, those fancy fruit drinks that sit on ice highly refreshing, and they serve a mean coffee in the right size cup. Because it is so incredibly cramped, even going in after the lunchtime rush won't mean your neighbour is not dangerously close to you for private conversations to be carried out with any degree of safety. I found out way too much about the work chagrins of the lovely man with the excellent diction beside us, and if he's reading this: I think you're right in the main, but I do think you need to take on board what they're telling you, too. You can make it work with a little bit of compromise, I feel sure. This would be a three-and-a-half for me, because ultimately it comes down to my tummy, but because the spirit is there, the staff are nice and the owners have a vision, it's a four. read more

Last sunday we walked in around 1pm, and there was a 15 minute waiting list. Luckily they opened up a place next door (brother hubbard to go!) where we could wait indoors (it was raining heavily!). we were there waiting like sardines in a can (it sure is a popular place!) , but luckily it went rapidly and we were called back in about 10 minutes later. If you are a picky eater, don't bother coming here for brunch . Every dish has a middle eastern twist and comes with lots of veggies, spices etc. Not your usual brunch fare. Apart from that, they also have lots of yummie cakes/ scones/ cinnamon buns. This time round I opted for the breakfast of champignons (mushrooms, spinach, tomato, poached eggs, onion bread, onion chutney, and asked for the cashel blue cheese on the side -I tried a little bit, but it was too strong for me). It was good, but for me there was too much mushroom and too little bread. Tasty though, but I won't be picking it again. *mushroom overdose* No doubt I will be back to try something else though! read more

It's going to be hard describing this place without using the word 'hipster'... I have been waiting for something to happen in this spot since Wolfe's vanished. I was happy to see that place close as it was pretentious, very slow and expensive. Brother hubbard is much more pleasant. The place gets busy very fast as it's very small (they are hoping to get the upstairs soon). If you decide to eat in, your food will take a while to arrive, and it is very pricey. Soup, sandwiches and salads are all over the "going" price and the portions are on the small side. It's all worth it! The food is exquisite. My partner had a soup (butternut squash I think) and a sandwich, I had the plate of salads and some sourdough bread with a fruit juice (raspberry, apple and rose! Gorgeous). The soup was surprisingly amazing, the sandwich was super fresh. The salads were also very tasty, especially the grilled broccoli. Worth every cent. I'm happy to pay a bit more for quality! So, so sad that this place is an ocean away. I only got a chance to go there once, which is super tragic. It's pretty much my star-crossed restaurant love. :( Anyway, we had a killer experience here. Our server was consistently friendly and attentive -- even though it got pretty crowded -- and the food was unbelievable. Seriously. I actually could not believe how good it was. The Croque Monsieur is probably in my top five list of the best things I've ever tasted in my life. They also have a really awesome tea selection, and each order serves around 2-3 people -- big plus. My only small complaint might be that it's pretty small in there (granted, we were seated in the Little Hubbard section), but it's so worth it. Definitely check this place out. read more

Got to try the scone and,since I couldn't make my mind up, I asked one of the waiters for a recommendation and he suggested the lemon and ricotta cake. After being away from Dublin for a few months my bestie decided to take me out to brunch to celebrate, my only demand was that it was a new place. She was shocked to find out I did not know Brother Hubbard and immediately took me there. Can I just say it's the cutest place ever? The service was amazing, the menu had lots of options (including gluten free options for every meal), and it was hard to decide in the end i had beans and pulled pork why GF rye toast, fresh orange juice and a pot of breakfast tea, it was SO GOOD. I couldn't even finish half it was so filling but they offered me a doggie bag and it was still delicious later that day. Did I mention we walked in without a table reservation on a Sunday? I'd love to go back here and try more of their food. I will add that if people in love and lots of PDA bothers you this is not the place as it was mostly couples seemingly new couples (READ SNOGGING GALORE). read more

I've been here quite a few times as I always find myself drawn to the place when I'm on that side of town. I've had a quick bite in the take-away section next door on a few early morning occasions but I'll more regularly go there for some lunch. I actually think it's a nice spot when eating alone - tables are small and there's a handy bench looking out on the street if you feel like people watching. Everything I've tried here is great- without fail. I always try to have something different because there is such variety on display in the menu items. On my last visit (a little bit worse for wear and on a mission to find numerous items I had lost on my travels the previous night) I had the home made baked beans with toast and chorizo on the side - so simple, so delish. I wanted to order it again. The Moroccan green tea is a favourite of mine and is something I'll order on every visit. There seems to be quite a loyal fan base as I've noticed the staff are very pally with guests on a number of occasions. Generally the staff are good - not the friendliest most welcoming service in the world - but efficient and nice. The place is quite hipster but I really like that attention has been paid to the little details. It means that the guys behind this place are the real deal. I've yet to try Sister Sadie, the sister venue to Brother Hubbard but lucky for me I've just moved in around the corner so I'm pretty excited to give it a go. The guys who run this place are super friendly as are the rest of the staff. However whilst the rest of the staff are lovely, they can be terribly forgetful when you order something or ask for something after you have received you order. The outside area is non smoking. Which is nice as it is small [I'm a smoker but am aware of the annoyance of smoke in your face whilst you are eating]. The toilet is an outhouse. This is great. Especially for a small place. You don't want the smell of a toilet when you are eating either. They have a great selection of cakes and scones. This does nothing for me personally. I'm not a cake person. I am a sambo, coffee and brunch person. But my sweet toothed friends adore their sweet treats! The menu is small. I have been getting the same sambo now for a while and I am a tad bored to be honest. So I hope they extend their menu soon and I also hope they start doing a breakfast/brunch menu. But for what they offer right now? I am impressed and you should deffo try it out! read more

I can't say enough good things about Brother Hubbard. I made a week-long tour of coffee shops in Dublin while working on writing a book this summer and hands-down, I found that Brother Hubbard was the best. The flat whites were delicious (I usually had 2, they were so good), the fruit and ginger scone is out of this world, and oh man, the butter they serve with the scone - well, about the only thing that's better than the scone is the butter. I actually took off a star because the seats at Brother Hubbard are abysmally uncomfortable (I've found this to be true of many coffee shops in Dublin - guess they don't want Americans like me to linger). But see, since I'd originally given Brother Hubbard seven stars, taking away 1 star for the seating still left it with six stars. (It lose the other star b/c it's located thousands of miles away from my house, and I won't be able to come back for a while, which I am seriously sad about.) Oh, and one last thing - 6.70 EUR for 2 flat whites and the most delicious scone (and butter!) I've ever had? Best deal in Dublin, hands down. read more
