Run by really friendly lads, Brother Hubbard gives you tasty, authentic food that introduces your taste buds to middle eastern grub! As a small independent cafe these lot are really doing it right in my eyes! I came here with other Yelpers and from finish to end I really enjoyed everything we where served. We had a mezze platter to start and share between us and it came out on authentic dishes and bowls that where so beautiful and great for presentation..I'd recommend the Hake as a main course, it literally melted in my mouth and the Cous Cous and veg along side was great too! Also the nicest Baklava I've had and it's my favourite dessert :) could live off it! After a long day of exploring and driving back from Northern Ireland, me and my friends were starving once we got to Dublin and craving some Mediterranean food. We were luckily able to get a table for a group of 4 on a Thursday night with no issues. The décor is modern and has cozy ambiance. They serve brunch as well (wish I could've tried it) but the dinner was perfect. We started off with some cocktails, which were perfect. For dinner, we all did the Middle East Feast set menu which includes a variety of starters good for sharing including hummus, falafel, bouche and then an entrée. Our entrees included the beef and feta kofta, "Imam Biyaldi", the roast turmeric cauliflower and lamb shawarma flatbread. Also, we did order a side of the romesco bravas (potatoes) because we're fatties. There's usually food leftover because we order too much, but we finished EVERYTHING. None of us had room for dessert and I can never say no to anything sweet. Make sure you stop here if you're ever in Dublin - you won't regret it! read more

Brother Hubbard is by far one of the best cafes I've ever been to. Since opening it's become one of my favorite weekend haunts. I'm constantly telling friends and family to try it out. It really does have something for everyone, whether it be great coffee (has-bean coffee), great food (their menu is all fantastic), and fantastic treats (the cinnamon and walnut scrolls are a personal favorite). Everything they do there seems to be wonderfully crafted and each menu item has something to set it apart from anyplace else, from their brilliant range of stewed fruit porridges, their homemade juice drinks or the beans which are flavoured with delicious spices. Even if you only feel like toast they'll present you with some fantastic and original homemade jams and preserves! As for the staff, each and every one is friendly and attentive. Their wonderful dispositions are guaranteed to make any visit a pleasant one. And as if that wasn't enough, they also have some of the best baristas in Dublin, with one coming second in a major competition recently. Definitely try this place out. I've been to Brother Hubbard a few times and can't really fault it. It's a great spot for both breakfast and lunch. Everything they do here they seem to do really well. The menu is relatively small when it comes to food choice, however, I don't mind that as the options they do have are delicious! I had breakfast here the other day and got the granola and an orange juice. The juice was fresh and thick with orange pieces, yum yum. I got a scone and coffee to finish then (I'd just come off a night shift, you have to treat yourself sometimes). The scone was perfect and came with a selection of preserves, coffee was great too. It think the whole lot came to just under €10, was was very reasonable. The lunch food is also great and I've noticed they do an evening menu of middle eastern food which I'm looking forward to checking out! read more

Also got an apricot roll which I was nervous about because I think the last time I got something similar I did not like it but this was a subtle taste of apricot which made me love it as well. I do love Brother Hubbard. It is now a regular stop for me on the way to work in the mornings, both because of good coffee and great staff. Very convenient on Capel Street, it is, as many other reviewers have pointed out, extremely well decorated and welcoming, with a bright space. It's small, yes, but the layout is simple enough to make sure you get what you want quickly. The welcome you get from Garett, James and Bruno is heartfelt and sincere and they have an astounding memory for names. Their food is simple and tasty and their coffee, similar to 3FE, is from Hasbean. They have a nice selection of teas too. THEIR BROWNIES ARE AMAZING. Seriously, I've had long conversations about their brownies and these have yet to be beaten in my experience. Perfect to drop into for a meeting or a refuge from a shopping excursion, there's a nice experience waiting for you. Lunchtime is always very busy so you'd be lucky to get a seat. My favourite place to sit is in the front window. Have a look above the front window to see what music they're playing that day. Probably the best place for coffee in the area and definitely a place you'll return to. read more

I've been coming here for a couple of years now, and I couldn't ever fault the service. The two owners in particular, are unfailingly warm and welcoming. Brother Hubbard was one of the first good eateries to open around the vibrant Capel Street area. I love their selection of Wall & Keogh teas and the large servings of hot chocolate, the liquid chocolate is served in a small jug that you pour into the hot milk yourself, and my inner child loves this as much as I loved mixing the cake mix as a kid! The dishes are large and moreish, and boy do they know how to poach an egg! I wish they'd mix up the vegetarian options a little bit, but I do appreciate the range of options they offer for veggies. Brother Hubbard is perfect for weekday lunch or brunch. If I had to pick something I didn't like about BH is that it gets very busy which is very apparent as the tables are quite small and very close together. It can be a bit touristy these days, but the laid back atmosphere here means its a great place to meet friends. read more

A great little café, and a welcome addition to Capel Street (which is getting more and more interesting as 2012 goes on). The décor of Brother Hubbard is simple, small, but well thought out (designed by the up-and-coming 'Designgoat' team), and the emphasis throughout is on quality: great coffee (like 3FE, their beans are supplied by Hasbean) made well and competitively priced, lovely home-baked cakes and scones (served with orange blossom butter...YES!), and a couple of interesting home-made juices. They've just started their lunch menu, but I haven't had a go yet - I bet it'll be good though! The staff are all really friendly and are passionate about what they're doing (makes a nice change from certain coffee chains!) and there are plans for a covered outside area and extended opening times for food/wine/beer in the evenings. This is one of my favourite places for lunch in Dublin. It is a wonderfully stylish and inviting place to sit in (an unusual combination), with bleached wood and quirky touches with old tins for holding utensils and sugar and the like. They also have a nice little garden area in the back. The cakes and salad selection are laid out to tempt you when you arrive. The food is great, with plates of interesting Ottolenghi-inspired salads, great sandwiches and soups. The bread comes from the incomparable Arun Bakery. This one of the most vegetarian friendly places I have been to in a while in Dublin. It is also one of the few places I have bought a cake in (well a cinnamon scroll). I don't really have a sweet tooth but their cakes are far too tempting. The portions are ample, so at 7.50 for a salad you get your money's worth. I don't drink coffee, but if you do this seems to be the place to do it, the coffee is provided by 3FE and they have long explanations on their site about what they serve and why. All the staff are friendly and welcoming in a non-overbearing way. What more could you want? read more

As we watched everyone else in the restaurant get served before us, we asked the server if we could get our drinks, her reply was " they should be ready now... What did you have?" Good fresh food. I liked it much more than my husband. Pulled pork and beans were delicious. Would definitely recommend that. The halloumi egg sandwich was just ok- cold and very thick veggies. The one less star was because they didn't put in our food order and it took 45mins for the food to arrive- no apology or discount at all- we saw tables come and go. Another less because we were by the bathroom and people kept bumping into us. Overall it was good but not as great as I expected. I have tried so many times to get in here and review this place, but to no avail! This spot is always jammers. I did manage to make it into their new takeaway section today, and it certainly lives up to all expectations. I got a wonderful artichoke roll, brownie and regular cup of coffee for ten euro. The roll was by far the nicest I have ever tasted. It was lick your fingers good. When it was wrapped and presented to me, it had that satisfying weight of a roll filled to the brim. You won't find sad looking sandwiches in here. The coffee while being a tad small for a regular, was the best I've had in the vicinity. The clean minimalism of the interior is also quite appealing, and I liked the little bench to sit on while you wait. A little hipster but meh, it works it very well. A+ read more

Couldn't understand what the hype would be about, but it's real. Food (and wait I imagine) is completely worth it. We were able to grab the last window seats since they're usually super busy and most people seem to be there with reservation. Shared the 3 course menu which I highly recommend. It was a fun experience and everything was delicious. Didn't even leave one speck of food behind! Appetizer platter came with a sample of everything. For the main course we ordered lamb and meatballs which came with couscous and grilled veggies. Dessert sampler did a great job of topping off our meal. Portions seemed small but I was stuffed and very satisfied with my meal. People seem to be coming here for lunch but I think the dinner experience would be more worth the trip. I know that it's become such a trendy thing to do, but honestly, brunch bores me. I internally groan when I get invited to brunch, and am a little miffed when I go to try a new restaurant on the weekend, only to find none of their usual dishes on offer because their "brunch menu" is being served until 4pm. I particularly don't understand going out for a full Irish breakfast... why would I pay upwards of €10 for a plate of grease requiring no culinary skill to put together? Even hungover, I can operate a toaster, throw bacon in a pan and reheat a tin of beans. So that's my brunch rant, and with one meal, Brother Hubbard managed to change my attitude about it completely. Yes, they have a brunch menu, but it's really food I could eat at any time. The Eggs Menemen are amazing! Soft-scrambled just perfectly with olives, baby spinach, roasted peppers and topped with feta yogurt & mint... so much flavour and textures going on, with the custardy eggs, fresh herbs, tanginess from the feta yogurt... it's so SO good. I also tried the Moroccan Iced Tea with my meal. Again, delicious. I was too full to eat anything else, but aside from their menu offerings, they also had an entire counter stacked with enticing fresh-baked goodies. Prices are reasonable, with most plates €10 and under, and very generous portion sizes. Other reviewers mention long waits, but when we went on a Saturday at noon, we were able to get a table for 2 immediately. It was pretty full, but I didn't see anyone else waiting outside. This place is so good that on occasion, if I've arrived in for a late late lunch, they've sold out of all their hot food. That should tell you something of their popularity and loyal customers. Were my expectations too high? Brother Hubbard offers a decent coffee, decent scone, the decor is modern, the staff is fine, I even like the smoking area at the back even though I don't smoke. Prices are moderately high but scones and coffees are on the smaller size of the scale. The philosophy of the place is nice but surely, every coffee place has some sort of ethical plea to display nowadays. So what's missing? I can not put my finger on it. It doesn't feel that special to me or I don't feel that special when I visit it. Yeah, maybe. Or it doesn't feel great value. Or it doesn't feel that comfortable. It doesn't taste that great. Understand me: it's fine, nothing wrong with it. It's just fine. We stopped in here on Saturday afternoon, about 3.00 and the place was pretty busy for take away. We ordered sandwiches (beef for him, ham for me) and we waited..... In fairness, the waitress didn't forget about us, she popped over to apologise for the wait, which was nice, I hate when they ignore your starving face. When they did arrive. WOW. They were so tasty. We split our sandwiches and shared, the beef was really nice, not too tough or chewy with a lovely garlicy dressing on it. The ham sandwich was lovely too, it comes with cheese, but I asked for none (I don't like cold cheese... toasty = yum, cold = yeuch) and the waitress was happy to oblige, I got an extra bit of rocket thrown in. The sandwiches came with a side salad of bulgar wheat. We had a brownie to finish. YOWZA. So so good. Worth the trip on it's own. I will definitely go back for more :) read more

I really wanted to try this place. Reeeeeeeaaaalllly. So much that I made my friend stand with me for the 30 odd minutes it took to get a table for three. Foodwise I wasn't let down at all. We ordered the beans with sourdough bread and an egg on top to share. The egg was covered in some cheesey stuff. It was a decent, hearty brunch and the bread was delicious. For afters, we had the semolina pancakes with ricotta and berry coulis. Also very nice. The coffee wasn't my cup of tea (HA!) a bit bitter and I needed a sugar to drink it which is not like me at all, but the orange juice was great. The staff were helpful and kind, though clearly run off their feet. When our friends arrived it took a good ten minutes before we could flag someone down to order. The space is small, I hear tell the back is nicer, but where we were, right in front of the scone display, was cramped and the small stools made it difficult to get comfortable or settle in. We ended up staying a few hours despite the mild discomfort. I'll be back here, or at least will put it on my list of recommendations! read more

I've only been once but definitely intend to return...the BEST scones in Dublin!! My scone had ginger in it and was a lovely crumbly consistency. My Americano was pretty darn good too, served in a cute red cup. The butter was amazing...sunshine yellow with flecks of orange in it. Service was very friendly. I went here for brunch recently and I really enjoyed the experience. I was thinking of awarding a 4 star but i thought it wasn't fair. 4 1/2 if that was possible. From start to finish i really enjoyed my time in Brother Hubbard. We were warmly welcomed at the door and showed to a table. Service was excellent and more than one member of staff came over to us to check was everything ok. The staff really seem to care about the quality of the cafe and it didnt feel like a forced question like in many places in Dublin. Once i saw the menu I knew there was only one option: the pulled pork sandwich. Someone had ordered it before and i saw it being delivered to their table as i was walking in and it looked soo good i had to try it. The pulled pork came with a delicious salad and it was served on sourdough bread. I devoured every last bit of it. I am not surprised in the slightest that it was awarded "the best sandwich in Dublin" by Bridgestones. For a treat we shared the almond and orange cake. I would not normally be a fan of anything citrus in my dessert but the orange was not overpowering and instead gave the cake a nice lightness. The menu is correct when it describes the cake as "super-moist" and it's also wheat free which makes you feel less guilty! The only thing that lets the cafe down is the cramped seating which is not that comfortable. However, their home made goods more than make up for this fault. Great to see an independent owner run cafe doing well. I am looking forward to going back again to sample more of their delights! read more

I came here following the recommendations for a scone and tea and it did not disappoint! The scone was moist, had a great flavor, and was served with three different jams. Not sure what they were exactly. One seemed raspberry based, there was a ginger marmalade, and a very interesting spiced jam at the end. The tea was very smooth and came in this cute pot. The shop is small and has a great ambience--good for sitting and reading on any given morning. The service was wonderful as well. Not a comfortable spot for guests wanting to have a conversation that is private or just not interfering with someone else's conversation. Not anything to write home about, really! It's joy-sational food. It's nice people. It's not being rushed from your table, even though there's a line out the door. It's the fresh mint in the water, the cardamom sprinkled on the avocado, the vegetable emphasis, the escape from the oppression of the Irish fry. It's Capel Street on a late Sunday morning, its air still singing the intimacies of the night before. It's sitting very close to people that are temporarily suspended in joy over a high plate of soul food. It's just great. read more

Good job we did as it was packed by 11am. I ordered the delicious healthy porridge and toast with assorted jams and my OT ordered the homemade baked beans with feta and chorizo. It was all delicious. The OT said it is one of the best cups of coffee he has ever had and went back for seconds. Who knew Brother Hubbard has a little bro'...?! Right next door to (big) Brother Hubbard is Little Brother with basically the same menu and loads of overflow space on the weekends. Bro Hub was bustin' at the seams when we walked in so they sat us next door. We grabbed seats facing the street and people watched while we chowed down on the most delicious pulled pork open-faced sandwiches. I threw in a slice of gluten free bread and was a very happy camper. The eats are nicely priced and the location is pretty cool - in between Cineworld and the Liffey which makes for a pleasant walk coming from any direction and a cool post- or pre- flick eatery! Also, if you're fan of the bro's, check out little sister Sadie off S.C.R. in D8 ... I plan to and will post a review at some point! Good eats seem to be all in the family here! read more

I will go back to this cafe for the following reasons: Friendly and polite staff. I felt welcome, taken care of, and appreciated on my first visit. The lads working greeted us, gave us the information we needed to know about where to sit, order, and hang. Good grub. I ate the artichoke and and goat cheese sandwich on foaccia bread with the cous cous as my side. I liked how fresh the veggies were and how nicely the food was plated. I liked the taste of my sandwich and liked the cous cous alright too. I think the cous cous could have been a scoop more for a serving and had more 'cous'. It was more watery tomato and cucumber. Maybe that was an off serving though, because the rest of my food was nice. My boyfriend ordered the hot sandwich, which was a pulled pork and cheese on rye bread meal. His side was a slaw that was a little bit bland. The veg was again very fresh, which is perfect for a crunchy slaw, but the dressing needed a bit of something with more spice to it and not just tahini yogurt flavor. They have a smoke-less back garden! The garden area has layers of wood with plants growing, tables arranged for grubbing or enjoying your tea and coffee.... and there's fresh air. Sold. The cafe itself is full of light and decorated well with modern and vintage decor, but I was really feeling their garden area. It's getting colder in Dublin now, but I bet in the warmer months its a popular spot. These reasons aren't listed in any particular order, because they're all important. You won't eat at a place that isn't clean or offering a good atmosphere, and you certainly want to spend money on food you like and has the right flavor. But don't forget how important the service is- how a place treats you while you're there can make an 'OK' meal better or make a good meal not worth going back for.
