I've been to Brownie's Lounge twice and all I can ask is it a whole entire vibe. The music is great. My friend and I showed up on NYE and there was a live DJ playing nothing but the hits baby! I shook a tail feather and had a great time. The bartender was great and very attentive. The only thing is I wish they offered food. Other than that it's always a great time. Happy New Year! Our normal bar closed at 10 so some friends recommended Brownies. I'm not a Land Park native so I've never heard of this place before but based on reviews it's seemed like an area favorite....or at least at one point it was. We arrived at 11pm and were told they closed at 12:30, which was fine, we just wanted to hangout for a bit and have a drink or two. Drinks were pretty cheap. If I remember correctly, my captain and coke and a Corona was like $12 total. I did notice the bartender was free pouting most of the drinks versus using a spout, but to each their own. While this place is deemed a dive bar, it's got a pretty nice restroom set up. Inside was spacious with a few booths. They do have TouchTunes and a pool table. One thing I did find odd was we lost track of time playing pool and before we knew it, it was 12:30, which should have been closing time, however the bartender never called last call and was still serving patrons. I could understand if it was busy but it was our group of 5 and maybe 5 people at the bar top. I guess open hours are just a suggestion. Although Yelp does state they are open until 1:30. So who knows. It does still appear to be a cash only bar which is a bit of a pain in this day and age of electronic payments being the norm. Overall, a fairly decent neighborhood dive. read more

It is an IRISH themed bar and been a neighborhood establishment for many, many years and we walk in to hear RAP music on St.Patrick's Day. Really!? No offer to change it when inquired. The corned beef hash was tasty, and the corned beef was great! Seasoned perfectly. Cabbage and potatoes were undercooked but will probably taste great when we cook them more at home. We were there on a Friday night around 12:30-1am when our regular bar closed early. It was 5 of us who just came to play pool and heard Brownies had a pool table. Upon walking in everything seemed fine and maybe only 4 other patrons at the bar. So we all go back to the pool table and begin to get ready to play. One of our friends that came with us asked a young lady with braids that was already at the bar if she wanted play doubles with us, she had agreed and said she was going to the bathroom 1st. We watch her go into the bathroom, one of 2 available to use. This is where things get absolutely disgusting. About 2 minutes later as the young, and obviously intoxicated woman is in the bathroom I notice the Security Guard, tall bald black man goes directly into the bathroom that this woman went into. I'm concerned and then tell the friends I came in with what I just saw. Approximately 10minutes pass as we continued to play pool and waiting for this woman to come out of the bathroom. After about 10min said security guard comes out of the bathroom with sweat all over his face, he's wiping with sweaty brow while trying to 'play it off' and make small talk with us. As he walks away the intoxicated young woman with braids stumbles out of the restroom, completely disheveled and disoriented looking completely out of it and sits down in a booth with her girlfriend who at this point has just noticed she was missing. They both end up leaving the bar aftervthis incident. I immediately go talk to a female bartender and alert her of the situation, to which she responds "they've known each other for years" and that "yes he's on the clock he shouldn't be doing that." My concern is that the woman was sexually assaulted in the bathroom by a man in a position of power, a security guard meant to protect the patrons of this bar. It's definitely a place that isn't run very well if a security guard is able to be in the bathroom for 10minutes with a highly intoxicated woman. I'm hoping that wasnt a sexual assault that I witness that night and I am certainly hoping the bartender reported it to the owner. Disgusting and unsafe place, and we all decided we will not be going back. Hopefully Owners and Management clean up their staff and fire the door man who finds having sex in the bathroom while on the clock okay to do. Dump. No thanks. read more

It's dark, it's dirty and needed remodeling 20 years ago. Yep, it's your friendly neighborhood dive bar. Brownie's is a good place to knock back a cheap beer or enjoy some tender corned beef. You won't impress any dates here however. The smoking area near the entrance is disgusting, the decor screams 1970s and it's so dark you don't need beer goggles at closing time. One of the regulars drove his SUV into the business next door, took a hard right and crashed through the dividing wall into Brownies. He sent the juke box flying across the bar. Luckily nobody was killed by it. The damage has been repaired but the juke box has been repositioned so it doesn't happen again. On a calmer night, there might be guy kicking his ex-girlfriends car, a couple having a fight, drunk women making fools of themselves, the owners screaming at a beer rep or a bartender chewing someone out as they are ejected from the bar. If you like that kind of drama and being hit on by portly cougars, this place is for you. read more

If I could leave zero stars I would. My friend and I came here after work for some drinks and went to the bathroom before we got the party started. The bartender was in the bathroom when we were waiting in line. When we finished we walked up to the bar to order our drinks and asked for a dirty martini which she responded to "well that depends.. which one of you threw up in the bathroom?!" The remodel is rough. There's quite a bit of painting and contractor work I could've easily done better, and I'm a scrub. The whiskey shot was a respectable pour. No beer on tap. One of the best dive bars in town! I'd say this place usually caters to an older crowd, as every time my friends and I have been in, we're always the youngest group of people around. Pat and Eileen are great bartenders. There is another older man that bartends on occasion who makes extra strong drinks.. That guy is pretty awesome too. I believe on most days they have free snacks in the back if you come in after lunch time. Drinks are cheap! You can order top shelf alcohol and it still doesn't cost you an arm and a leg. Sitting at the bar to talk with the regulars is fun but if you want a little privacy to chat with friends, they also have booths. The jukebox also has some great tunes. Brownie, the owner, comes in on occasion with his classic red car. (Sorry, I never caught what kind of car it is... But it's pretty!) He's a pretty cool guy to chat it up with too. read more

I'll give points to the place for being old school enough to have some pretty great drink prices ($4.50 for a bourbon and ginger ale and I'm pretty sure their well is Bulleit) and the new remodel is nice and open. I'm taking off a couple of stars because the goddamn jukebox is loud enough to vibrate my teeth and there are ten f!#$ing people in the room. I like loud music as much as the next guy but not in this kind of a room on a Sunday night. Would love to be able to hear my friend while he's talking but they turned up the bass and I think I've gone deaf over some third generation generic Evanescence band on the jukebox and that doesn't really seem worth it. read more

I'm writing about the Thursday special of corned beef at Brownie's. I've heard about the tasty corned beef from my husband and really wanted to try it myself. It's a Thursday special and you have the choice of corned beef sandwich (a big stack of corned beef on light rye with mac salad and pickles for $9.25) or dinner (a big pile of corned beef with 1/4 head of cabbage, carrot, buttered roll for $9.75). I went for the dinner so I could have leftovers! It was mighty tasty. And being that it's already cooked, it comes to the table very quickly. A note about their horseradish, it is righteous! No horseradish cream. No watered down for the whimpy. This is the real stuff and it clears the sinouses!! And it's available every Thursday. How great is that? I totally think it's time for a young people invasion. This is a dive bar with beat down furniture, and as previous reviews mentioned, reminiscent of the show Cheers. Yet, it's totally worth coming to! Come for lunch, and try their food. It really is worth trying. Alright, so the service was slow. We went in, ordered, and then I started talking to myself as if I was talking to the service person: "excuse me! I'm really hungry! I'm ready! Please bring my food!" and just about when my boyfriend was starting to find it difficult to keep me seated and patiently waiting, the lady brought our food. If you know me, you know that of course I had to try the french dip, and my boyfriend got the corned beef (Thursday special). So are you ready? I HAVE A NEW FRENCH DIP FAVORITE IN SACRAMENTO! The french dip is loaded, and I mean loaded with meat. So, I had to take some of the meat out so that I can actually dip it! I put some of the magical, strong, awesome horseradish on there, dip, and... OMG! So good. Like seriously good. I didn't take the last bite. Kept it. I'm gonna have it later on tonight so that my night can end the best way possible: with some awesome French dip! The corned beef was really good too. They definitely cook it with lots of bay leaf, you can smell it pretty strongly and I love the smell of aromatic herbs. the corned beef is served with steamed carrots and cabbage, and two pieces of toasts treated like garlic bread. I have so much left overs, I am a very happy girl right now! The reason I deducted one star: the slow service, and the under seasoned carrots and cabbage. But the rest, was awesome. And let me tell you, just to do them justice: even though the service was slow, the lady was super friendly, very nice, very courteous and helpful. They don't take credit cards, but they'll happily accept your check, or you can get some cash from the atm machine. This is a great place. give it a try, and if you're not scared of horseradish, slather some on your bread, and dip in the jus... SO AWESOME! DO IT! The proud old dude put out fatty hot dogs, canned chili and potato chips for free. I suggested this spot as a meeting place for some neighbors to make Big Plans for an upcoming event. Never been in here before. I figured on a Monday at 4pm it would be a quiet and convenient locale. It proved an excellent meeting place. Three dollar 24 ounce PBR in a can, congenial lady bartender, cozy vinyl booths. Free appetizers appeared at ~5pm. I believe I was the youngest person in there, which is saying something considering I'm nearing the half-century mark. I got the Big Look when I walked in but I think that's natural when someone new walks in. Totally down to earth, no frills bar with low-key professional drinkers. No annoying frat boys. Brownie's a straight DIVE!! And I love it! Probably one of the divest bars in Sacramento (if that is even a term)! I have been a few times over the years and it has never appointed. The bartenders have a heavy hand and are very sweet. The regulars walk over, ride over, and some drive over; and they sit for hours at a time LOL! Only complaints are; cash only and the bathroom is not the cleanest. But for a local joint this is a nice spot to grab a drink out while in Greenhaven. Brownies is a neighborhood bar that is a lot of fun. I wouldnt say party people in the place to be, but the prices are cheap and they have free food on buffet burners on the back. If you've had a rough day at home or the office, swing by and have a nicely priced drink and some free chicken nuggets. I dare you to still feel bad after that. You can't. I just came back from an outstanding club sandwich at Brownie's. Eight layers of turkey, nine layers of ham, two layers each of Swiss and cheddar--and these are pretty thick (not deli-thin cuts)--plus bacon, with homemade potato salad topped with a beet ring...quite a feast for the eyes before it went into the gullet! Outstanding service...direct, but plenty friendly. It more than made up for the rude greeting we got from one of the bar regulars, the only non-grayheaded "kid" at the bar, buff arms, golden tan, jock haircut....probably an off-duty cop. As soon as we walked in, everyone glanced over, and the bro-dawg chuckled, "JERRY GARCIA IS STILL ALIVE!" Early afternoon drunkenness had flicked off the filter apparently. No biggie...it sorta struck me as kinda funny. So, even before this sweet older lady stepped up to control any damage and serve as our hostess, I was already making myself feel welcome. We were seated at the "World Famous Tap Dance Table" and handed these old menus that were probably copied on a mimeograph machine back in the 70s when this place was last remodeled. If I didn't already have a perverse fascination with weird vestigial places that resemble wood-paneled tombs festooned with a logo of a decades-discontinued font style, I'd have probably left. The menu advertises just six or seven choices with zero in the way of descriptions or promises of side dishes, and it's all stuff that you can get at myriad other eateries where it's usually pretty mediocre. The menu did little to prepare us for the awesomeness that was delivered to our table minutes later. My buddy got the French dip sandwich. As good as my mile-high and undeniably-kwalitee club was, his French dip looked even better! And he backed it up, repeatedly upgrading his increasingly excited utterances from "this is one of the best French dips I've had" to "this is as good as any French dip I've had" to finally, "this is the best French dip I've ever had." The meat looked so tender, I felt like I was cutting it with my gaze. He kept raving about the sauce. I am definitely coming back for that French dip sometime! If the club and the French dip are *this* good, and these items aren't even advertised on the outside banner proclaiming the corned beef as "world famous", then I can only imagine how good that corned beef must be! This is just the kinda place that my friend Todd would freak out about....Too bad the menu is not vegetarian-friendly! read more

Well, IT IS definitely a DIVE bar...I still remember my first night there, the smell of pine sol, the food served (free) in open air, the nonchalant patrons, and the attentive bartender...though he was more attentive to my female companion than he was with me, normal I suppose. One word; Cheap! The drinks are cheap. You can easily drink to forget you drink, to your heart's desire. This is the bar where I learned to make my favorite drink: Orange Julius - a concoction made of Triple Sec, Orange Vodka, Orange Juice, Cream, and a dash of orange zest. Okay first I should say I live less than three blocks from Brownie's so my proximity to what I consider the best dive bar in Sac is a little skewed. That said I have not found a bar in town that comes close to Brownie's for atmosphere, price and ambiance. The jukebox consistently has my favorite blues tunes, the drinks are strong and cheap and the crowd lively but not in an "oh crap did this guy take his meds" kind of way. Best place to go for a lazy Friday or Saturday night. The people watching is great, the bartenders will remember your drink of choice in no time and the living is easy. I love Brownie's and I thank God, Allah and Ganesh (to name a few) that places like this still exist. read more

If you like the smell of 20 year-old gym socks and urine, this is the place for you! I have to admit, I have been known to belly up to the Brownies bar once or ten times because of the mere fact that I can get tipsy for about $10 and because it's a short bikeride from my house. The regulars are a treat. One in particular likes to start each sentence with "You ever get high and... (insert the most bizzarre thing you can think of)" The jukebox does have some oldies but goodies in store and you can be sure that people will be dancing, even if it's just one crazy lady who not 5 minutes before accused a barstool of being a terrorist. I'm not too proud to frequent dives, in fact, I tend to favor them. My friends and I ended our night here and, I'll admit it, I was a little skeptical of this place at first but as my four Yelp stars state: Yay! I'm [now] a fan. It's tucked inside an old strip mall by the post office and to me, it was always just a place I drove by. The place is dark and old and only had about a handful of people inside when my friends and I arrived, but that was all made up for by the bartender. He couldn't be any nicer, and he didn't even give us a hard time when my friends asked if he made fruity cocktails. And definitely an extra star for him for being such a good sport when my friend (the birthday girl) started singing "Black And Yellow" to him... yeeeah, she was a bit inebriated, to say the least. This is my kind of place when (1) it serves corn beef & cabbage year-round, (2) Kevin's mom & her gang of retirees meet for lunch here, and (3) I get a speeding ticket en route to lunch with another yelper here. Good crowd at 11:25 am on a Thurs. amidst a mocha-colored wood paneled room. Vinyl booths w/ high partitions ensure private conversations. Friendly, old dude with the apron and service trolley was the best part; wish I got a grandfatherly hug! Good value for your hard-earned bucks: half an order of corn beef left enough for dinner. This place is the definition of a dive--and a great one at that. I have frequented Brownie's for some years now since its in the hood of some of my friends in Sactown. I love the fact that it feels like St. Patty's day every day at Brownies. They never take down that crazy looking paper leprechaun on the wall. What's so great about it (in order of importance) 1) 4 drinks for $12. Yes. 12 DOLLARS!! 2) The jukebox with some fantastic old school rock. 3) The whiskey selection. 4) The super friendly bartenders. 5) People watching (the regulars are a sight to see). Ok... I live in rocklin, I was a little nervous when I pulled up to this place but, alas, I usually take the advice of yelpers... And in this case, I'm so glad I did! I was working nearby and in DESPERATE need of A) strong cocktail... B) good bar food... And C) somewhere to watch 2nd half of a march madness game. -the bartenders; awesome! Funny, interesting, make a helluva drink (and you can afford a few :) and they didn't mind turning the game on. Check./ -the food; so, it looked and sounded delish but the kitchen was closed ;( We got take-out from the mexican market next door.... I eat aLOT of mexican food but this I would drive 40mins for. Check ./ -the cocktail; I already covered but I will reiterate; delish, inexpensive and prompt. Check ./ Which brings me to my final, and most important points; the inside is just dark enough but the decore doesn't make you afraid to drink out old the glass wear, the "regulars" all seem to be regular 30's-something fun-havers (like myself :) and the owner...... It would be worth the drive from Canada just to hear his stories and say you met him. He's one of those people that can change the way you look at things forever (before you even order a drink!)
