During my rare visits to the downtown/midtown area, I have often passed Elixir Bar & Grill and noted that I would check it out when the opportunity presented itself. That opportunity presented itself when a friend and I wanted to grab a quick drink prior to visiting the neighboring Roc & Sol Diner (which I highly recommend!) for an event. Upon walking in, I was warmly greeted by bartender Ben (that has a nice ring to it) and situated myself at an indoor table before approaching the bar to place an order. While waiting for my friend to arrive, I sipped on my refreshing margarita and was able to immerse myself into a good novel (it was still fairly quiet in the bar being that it was a late afternoon on a Wednesday). Although the bar area was somewhat busier when my friend arrived, the bartender made sure that he promptly acknowledged her and she was able to effortlessly order her drink. Small, out of the way, and kind of run down is how I would describe Elixir. It's not for the Range Rover crowd, but that's part of it's appeal. It's the kind of bar where you can drink, be loud, and smoke (outside of course). The bartenders are down to earth and usually have a game on the TV. They don't mind chatting with customers about sports, beer, or joking around with regulars. I like the crowd. They can be colorful, but are all good people. They are out for fun, and can be rowdy, but seem to get along with everyone. read more

I was going bar hopping with my gf and we stumbled upon elixir. They have a photobooth here and skeeball!! The photobooth costs $5 and takes Apple Pay! The bartender was extremely friendly. He acknowledged us right when we came in and greeted us on our way out. I'm not a huge fan of the taste of alcohol and I let the bartender know this and he made me a delicious drink. Moved out of Sac 7 years ago and came back recently and was craving a Royal Burger from Elixir, went in and saw that they only had a smash burger option now and it was very basic. After having a nice dinner at the Fish Face Poke Bar. Joe K. suggested we stop by at the Elixir for a drink, which was only a short walking distance away. Joe, my sister and my brother-in-law thought it was a great idea! None of us had ever been there before, but many Yelp friends have, and had good things to say about this quaint little dive bar. When we arrived, I noticed that one of our Yelp friends Angelo C was sitting at a patio table enjoying a drink, so we stopped to say hi. Then, as we entered the bar itself, Joe stated that it was so dark inside that he couldn't see. The cute female bartender immediately responded with: "just follow my voice!" Ha! Ha! We were all laughing! Everyone placed orders for drinks, but I was having a hard time deciding right away. When I'm put on the spot, I will usually order my old standby Tequila Sunrise. But since it was my birthday, I wanted to try something different. That's when the same bartender mixed up some sort of sampler concoction she called "The Chuck Norris." She even gave it to me on the house when she heard it was my birthday. It turned out to be pretty good, and yes, it did have a "kick" to it! At first, the bar only had a few patrons inside, but after about an hour, a lot more customers started coming in. This bar is your typical dive/sports bar, but with character. The staff is friendly along with the friendly regular customers. There is also a sectioned off room with a few game machines. The lounge seems a little small inside, but there is also a covered patio area that accommodates a larger crowd. We were too full from dinner to try out their food, but everyone enjoyed their beverages. The drinks are reasonable and they have a good happy hour! I hope I get to come back here again soon. Elixir, I finally got a chance to check you out. You are really comfy in an unfortunate bachelor pad kind of way with an awesome happy our and friendly service. Overall, I proclaim this place a comfortable place to drink. Also I totally dig the spicy Thai wings. The sauce is like 5 parts honey, 1 part red pepper flakes, one part sriracha, and 10 parts delicious. It's totally the kind of thing you crave while inebriated. Your shirt and pants crave it too. Looking for a bite and a beer? Elixir has both, and if you like dive bars you won't be disappointed. The $6.25 Street Tacos are a great deal. Three double-tortilla tacos piled a couple inches deep with carnitas and chopped onions. My current after-work go to. The beer is great too: Green Flash, Sculpin, Ninkasa Tricerahops, Scrimshaw, and even Two Rivers cider. They get five stars just for the taps. The bar is divey, tables outside for the smokers, skeeball inside. A few TVs around with games on. Pandora playing a Dinosaur Junior mix at the moment. I won't have their beef burger again (typical Costco patty) but everything else has been good. On the other hand, someone had the mushroom and blue cheese burger and it looked good. They ask how you would like the meat patty cooked. Sometimes it's on point and sometimes it's not! You can't tell in the dark bar eating your food until you eat it. It comes with fries, and $1 up charge for garlic fries or onion rings. The onion rings are not that great to me. I have not tried the garlic fries. Salt n pepper wings are pretty good as well. It's time for an updated review! I'm thrilled to say I've been coming here since 2005, over a decade and a half! I've celebrated birthdays, promotions, new jobs, heart breaks, tinder dates, and so much more throughout the years and can't wait to continue making new memories here. My very first meal here was their kimchee pickled cabbage street tacos. I would have it in taco salad style . Gosh, I miss those. The chicken wings never disappoint! The drinks are still generously poured, and Christina is still knocking out her cocktail drinks that taste so delicious it keeps you coming back for more. She's a master mixologist! I came here with several friends for a get together. As many times as I've been in this area I never noticed Elixir being here. Oh, well I know now. We all decided to hangout in the patio since it was a beautiful day and there is plenty of seating. The service is pretty decent for a dive bar and I love they have a jukebox. The inside of the is pretty small and cramped in my opinion. I ended up ordering a couple PBR's, AMF's, Long Island and a Salad on the side. The AMF's and Long Leland are on point and extra strong just how I like it. My salad was pretty decent the veggies are super fresh and delicious. The prices for food and drinks are very good. A friend and I were making plans to grab drinks and took to yelp to find a cute dive bar that had TV's. We found what we were looking for and much more with Elixir! It's small inside the place with a good size outdoor area. They have a skee-ball machine and I think I saw one or two arcade games as well. We had them put on the sharks game for us without having to ask multiple times like some places. FOOD: Thai wings (5 Stars) - never had a better bite of bar food. these wings were everything you want when drinking. loved them. Garlic fries (3 stars) - kinda plain due to them not being salted. definitely needed seasoning. Bartenders here were sooooo attentive and friendly and just all of the nice lovely things you could want. Music selection was a mix of different genres of rock. Toward the end of our visit they started playing like super hardcore scream rock which I myself can enjoy, but my bf and friend were just like no thanks haha. More of a small neighborhood bar than a dive. Nothing disreputable here that I noticed. With a covered outdoor space, there's room for more than a few at this clean, upbeat, "be careful where you park", stop in for one or a few, friendly, let's have a laugh or really get into it, ... establishment. During happy hour(s), the power of a PBR can be had in a can for only a couple bucks (+/-) ... my 'go-to' HH first beer. A few other craft beers available and a full bar. Saw a few blue drinks passed off. Bathrooms? Yes, they have them and they are what they are. They come in handy when you need one and better to have these than none at all. read more

I came to Elixir one evening after work with a few of my Yelp friends to hangout on the patio and relax after a long day. They have a small parking lot in front, but street parking for me wasn't too much of an issue. I was able to find a spot just a short walk away. They have a nice indoor area with a small bar and a bunch of tables and chairs. Same goes for outside with even more tables and chairs and this is also where the bathrooms are located. The bathrooms are atrocious and seem to be unisex since nothing is marked on the doors?! Anyways, they stunk and were not clean. Reminded me of an outhouse. Gross. I ordered a Grapefruit Sculpin from the bar which they had on tap, and a Pabst Blue Ribbon later on which wasn't on tap so I got a can and a glass. I'm apparently horrible at this so I got a lot of foam with my beer and spilled some on the table as well. Rookie mistake. It was after work so I was hungry and ordered their Grilled Cheese with French Fries for my meal. The price was reasonable which I was thankful for. The fries were tasty and were cooked well where as the grilled cheese was cooked on the outside, but 90% of the cheese inside was not melted at all. See picture. This was obvious to whomever was cooking it because they cut it in half and could blatantly see the unmelted cheese, but decided to serve it anyways. Came here late on a Friday with a group of people. Plenty of seating both inside and outside the bar. Ordered the lemon drop and I loved the sugar rim. Friends all enjoyed their drinks. Really liked that they have skee-ball machines here, it was fun to play and watch friends play. Only gripe is the volume of the music. I don't know why every bar in Sac insists on having such loud music. I'm not a fan of yelling a conversation to someone sitting a foot away. Despite the loud music, I would come back. It's very dive-y (think extremely sticky tables and a trashed as hell bathroom) but the drinks are solid and it's cool they have skee-ball. read more

I'm ashamed to say it, but up until a couple weeks ago I had never been to the Elixir Bar. It's location set back off the street in an area of town I rarely visit made it a low priority. Fortunately some friends convinced me to go here after another raucous Humpy Hour UYE - this time at Old Ironsides. Elixir keeps it simple but provides everything a dive bar connoisseur needs. They've got some decent beers on tap, a well-stocked jukebox, pinball and an outdoor seating area. Visit on a weeknight and you'll never feel crowded or pushed aside. The food is a step above your usual dive bar fare. Maybe I was just buzzed or maybe it was the sound of Phil Collins singing "Sussudio" in the background, but their grilled cheese sandwich and fries tasted absolutely fantastic. read more

After moving to Sacramento and experiencing dive bars for the first time I realized its NOT scene. I know many prefer these places since they are more low key and drinks are extremely cheap (especially during happy hour) but they are also usually small, dirty and I usually prefer places where I can bust a move. HOWEVER, I have to admit I had a great time at Elixer Bar! My boyfriend and I met up with some friends here on a Friday afternoon and I enjoyed every minute! Of all the dive bars I've been to in Sacramento, this is the first one where I've had a beyond positive experience and would recommend this place to friends. First off we were there during happy hour. I don't remember what the deals were but they were good enough for me! The bartender Christina was extremely friendly. She asked me what I wanted but since they didn't have cider and I wasn't in a beer mood I wasn't sure. Christina said she could make anythinggg and asked me what types of drinks I liked. She recommended a Cherry-Limeade. OMG... it was sooooo good! I don't know what was in it but it came in a pint glass and was strong enough to give me a little buzz before dinner. I could have easily drank another but was getting full from eating. My boyfriend and I shared the Royale Burger (I think that's the one with the egg), salt and pepper fried chicken and garlic fries. Everything tasted fabulous. The burger was huge and filled with everything a burger should come with, fries were cooked to perfection and brushed with fresh garlic and oil and the salt and pepper chicken was bursting with flavor. Their beer selection is decent and omg their burgers are the bomb.com !!! You wouldn't expect good food in a hole in the wall bar , but yes very very delicious foods come out of their kitchen ! The Good: Cheap and good food (the sandwiches are huge). Cheap and good drinks. Good music. Bartender rocks. Good smoking patio. Usually a chill crowd. The Bad: That bathroom. This is bad. All bad. Bad because I just went to Elixir, which is a block away from my office, for the first time in years and tried their food. Before I ordered I checked to see what yelp had to say and it seemed the garlic fries and the salt and pepper wings were the items getting pumped up. Thank you yelp. I expected some Costco wings that possibly tasted ok and were cooked well. Looking back these might be some of the best wings I've eaten. I've tried a lot of wings. I can go through wings like a tsunami. These are some damn tasty wings. Maybe a little salty, but they're called salt and pepper wings so it's excusable. They have such a perfect crisp to them I had to ask what the batter consisted of. And they were cooked perfectly. Not overcooked and dry like some places tend to do. As for the fries I would say most garlic fries out there don't have nearly enough garlic. Why? I'm not sure, maybe because chefs are afraid of over powering the dish. Kind of like when a waiter tells you something is spicy so be careful. How often is it really that spicy? Rarely if ever does a dish provide that kick the waiter warned me about. Well these fries pack a garlic punch. I've just brushed my teeth and I still taste the garlic floating around. This isn't a bad thing. So I guess I found a new spot to start bringing friends to and to have it so close to me is just a damn shame. Be ready for the chicken holocaust. Bad for me and bad for chickens. read more

My very good friend, Hong, suggested to go to this bar on this beautiful Friday night. I've never been, so I was very curious about this dive bar she likes so much. I arrived before my girlfriends, around 8:30pm, and headed straight to the bar. It's a pretty small space: they have one bar, a few seating areas inside, and a patio with additional seating. It was very chill when I got there, but I wasn't greeted until a sweet, petite asian woman approached me, asking me what I would like to drink. I got a gin & tonic, which was only $4. After waiting several minutes, my girlfriends showed up and started looking at their menu; after I tasted the garlic fries, I was pretty hooked and had to order myself some food. I ended up getting a garden burger with blu cheese, fried egg, and a side or sweet potato fries (all up charges keep in mind). I have to say I was pretty satisfied and full, considering how messy it was to eat. Purchasing the burger and another gin & tonic came out to $16. Overall, I spent $25 at this location, which is pretty great! The staff was pretty on it, clearing off any empty plate or cup they saw. The only thing I could possibly complain about is the restrooms. First of all, it was hard to find; you wouldn't know where it is unless someone guided you. There are no signs indicating where the restroom is and seems a little unkept, which, I guess, works with the whole vibe. Happy hour m-sat 4-7, sun 4-close Sunday brunch Trivia Wednesday nights 8pm And I did come to brunch to find out about these Biscuits and Gravy that I heard about and I wasn't as impressed with them to say 'best ever' but James thinks so...
