The small cemetery is called the Houston Pioneer Cemetery and is the final resting place of John Caroll Houston and his wife, Mary Virginia Houston. The Houstons were one if the first families to settle in the area This is a very cool part of a very cool.part of this community. Rossetter Park is located in Eau Gallie next to the James Wadsworth Rossetter House which is now a…read moremuseum. Eau Gallie used to be its own town but in 1960 he joined with Melbourne. Angela who is the caretaker at the Rossetter House came out to speak to me and she picked up on my love of history. She recommended that I take a look at the park. According to a memorial I found, the park was dedicated in 1980 to its pioneers. It was the same year as Eau Gallies centennial. Imagine my surprise upon further exploration when I saw the park contains a small cemetery. It turns out another name for this park is the Houston Pioneer Cemetery and it contains the graves of the settlers from Eau Gallie, John Caroll Houston, III and his wife Mary Virginia Houston. Another memorial I found in the park lists the first grave as being from 1865. There is also a memorial plaque to Susan T, Edwards (1878-1972), founder of the Eau Gallie Garden Club. According to a bulletin board in the park, 12 members of the Houston family are buried here with the last burial taking place in 1910. The family includes two infant daughters whose names aren't even listed. On April 24, 2010 a study was done on the cemetery by a professor and graduate students from the department of anthropology at UCF. They were able to study the ground for all marked and unmarked graves. The cemetery map was created at UCF using the results of the ground penetrating radar. They concluded that they believed there were many unmarked graves but it can't proven unless the ground is actually dug up. How many people remain here may be up for debate but there is no denying that is a beautiful final resting place. The gate, live oaks dripping in Spanish moss, and the old fashioned grave stones give it a Haunted Mansion vibe. These old family cemeteries provide so much history on the people who came to make their fortune in Florida when it was a swamp swarming with mosquitos and there was no air conditioning. Their hard work laid the foundation for what is here today and they deserve to be remembered for their contributions.
