II have been eating and loving Brown's since the 1960"s. First experience was a place actually run by Frank Portillo in a strip mall on North Ave., in Villa Park. They were only open from 4-9 and all orders were made fresh (you called ahead). It seems like the company started to decline when the went to the pre-made concept. Hard to keep chicken hot and fresh for long. Some of their locations are still good (Oak Lawn for example) but this location has continued to deteriorate. Yesterday afternoon my wife stopped to buy some chicken for dinner. Since it would have to be re-heated anyway, she bought and 8 piece box, assuming it was a whole chikcen for 2 adults and 2 kids. When we got it home we discovered it contained 1 breast, 1thigh,1 leg and 4 wings. After we ate our chicken we ordered a pizza. read more

I have only been to this place once and asked for something simple. I asked for one thing and that was fried okra. Since when does fried okra mean fried mushrooms?. They gave me fried mushrooms when I asked for okra so I don't see how you could mess that up. First experience and this browns chicken and it will be the last. read more

I'm presently having lunch at this Browns now. The coating is not Browns chicken coating so how can this be a Browns chicken? Maybe they ran out? The tables are filthy, no one in the past 1/2 hour has come to clean them. It seems this place has changed owners. I won't be coming back. read more

We are finished with Brown's. This last experience was finally the last straw. I ordered 50 pieces of chicken and a full tray of cole slaw on a Thursday and prepaid the order. It was suppose to be ready at 6:30 pm the next day. I arrived at 6:40 the next day to pick it up and was told that is would be a 20 minute wait. The manager told me that they were just making the cole slaw now.....10 minutes after it was supposed to be picked up because they wanted it to be fresh. So I guess if they had made it half an hour earlier it wouldn't't have been fresh? Perhaps they should have prepared it at my house to truly ensure that it was fresh. I got the same answer when they told me they were heating up another fryer and were starting to fry the chicken that I ordered. I finally got my order 34 minutes after it was suppose to be picked up. A woman ahead of me in line at the counter said she waited about 15 minutes for an order of mushrooms. It is not like they are understaffed. There were several people behind the counter, but there was a total lack of organization. The chicken and slaw were great, but it is not worth having to deal with the staff. Horrible, horrible service! Because there are no Brown's Chicken restaurants near me, I just drove a half hour to go to this place, and left without chicken (which is probably good considering the rest of the reviews.) I remember enjoying Brown's Chicken as a child, but this restaurant does not come close to my memories. I pulled up to the drive-thru and was immediately greeted with a mumbling "just a minute." Well, that "minute" turned into 20 minutes (not exaggerating) without a single comment or check-in. I finally drove up to the window, and was again ignored. We went inside, and once again, were ignored by the staff. No comments to anyone-there were four other customers there-until they finally turned to one man and said, "We don't have any chicken. It will be at least 20 minutes." No chicken?! I drove a half-hour, waited 20 minutes, and was treated disrespectfully to go to a place where they didn't have the actual product that is the name of their business? They did not even respond when I left, probably are quite used to seeing this I suppose. So glad that I didn't order or pay anything. Don't waste your time or money, at least not at this location. Husband and I went here last night and wanted to use one of the many coupons that I purchased thru a local baseball team. We have never tried Brown's before and will not be back!! It was a Friday night and there was only one other couple. We were told that we could not order an Italian Beef as part of the BOGO coupon. Only chicken! We realized that the Italian Beef would be the more expensive one, but she called the manager over and he said 'no'! Didn't understand that!! The food was brought out to us and the area was pretty clean, no business, it should be clean!! I had the cole slaw, onion rings and 2 tenders. The slaw was all cabbage, very little to no moisture or flavor. My rings were greasy and definitely straight from a bag. The tenders were ok, nothing to write home to mom about. My husband actually left skin and meat on the bone, he didn't like it much. He's a big guy and eats EVERYTHING!!! His fries had no salt. The beans tasted like straight from a can with a few pieces of sausage added. Not sure why people talk about this chicken, we didn't have a good meal. read more

Ick. I used to love Brown's, it was the best when you craved fried chicken. It's gone steadily downhill over the past year. Drive thru service is horrible. Today I had a craving for chicken and stopped to dine in. A 2 piece with one side and a small drink cost me $9.00. Really! It was posted on the menu for a 2 piece with one side as $6.49. The guy pointed out to me that there was a "note" under it that if you requested a breast, leg, thigh, etc. it was 80 cents more. So basically, unless you wanted a 2 wing meal with one side you are gonna pay $7.30 for a 2-piece meal. Plus, it blew. It was dry and I didn't even bother to eat all of it even though I was ravenous. I am done with this place. Close it down and put something with quality food and quality service up there. read more

Tonight we got a 8 piece meal. The chicken was just terriable. Dried out. Outside was over cooked and u could tell it had been on the shelf a long time. Didnt call to complain because i am guessing the manager wont care since everyone was just standing around doing nothing. I will never return. read more

I signed up to Yelp today, just to write this review! Had a taste for Chicken so, stopped in after work to pick dinner up for the family on Thursday 7/14/16. It had been years since I had ordered anything from Browns and figured it was time to check them out. Plus, I live down the block so convenient too. Upon walking in, many children were playing in the dining area unattended. Although not very professional, obviously the children belong to the people running the place. Maybe the sitter was sick? Placed my 12-piece order with three sides. Mashed potatoes w/gravy, Fritters and Cole slaw along with and order each of mushrooms and livers. I was asked if I wanted sugar (Sugar?) on my fritters.... I answered "NO".. Not sure why that sugar is being offered but, anywhoo.. Total was $48.xx Not cheap. But, not complaining. If it's good, it's worth it. As I waited for my order, a couple came in as well as a gentlemen and they placed orders. It was probably close to a ten-minute wait. No biggie though, they were working the driver through as well. I realized my order was up when a man behind the cooking area told the lady working in front of the cooking area that the fritters "had no sugar on them". "She replied no sugar?" and of course he said "No sugar!!!" Then she "shouted out something".. I approached the counter because she was still holding the squeeze bottle of sugar in her hand although I could not tell at that time if sugar was in fact on my order of fritters. She bagged my order and sent me on my way.... Walking to the car and working in a catering business myself, I was thinking, "If she did put sugar on my fritters, wouldn't she have apologized, told me and offered to make a fresh batch? I get to my car, open the fritters and sure enough, a third of them had sprinkled powdered sugar on them. I took the fritters back into the restaurant and when the same woman at the counter gave notice to me standing there with my fritters, I told her "Because you are busy, I'll keep these fritters but the least she could have done was offer to remake the fritters being they had sugar on them and, that I heard the guy behind the counter tell her "No Sugar" (Actually all of us heard him say it) that if she intends for her customers to return, she should have offered to remake them". As I leave the restaurant, the same lady is apologizing to the other customers standing there! No apology for me though!???! I go home, round up the family only to realize the mushrooms and livers were not there. I check my receipt and sure enough, I paid for them.... I call the restaurant and let them know I was missing the other items on top of the sugar on the fritters... The guy puts me on hold, comes back and say's "they weren't on the counter, they must have gone into someone else's bag".. And, "if I wanted to come back he'll remake them".. I thought about it.. And told him No. Keep my money... I just will not be returning. And I definitely will not be! The chicken was less than mediocre. Mashed potatoes were barely warm. The Fritters were a little on the crispy side being the corn in them were a bit hard. The Cole slaw was close to KFC.. Other than the Cole Slaw, total waste of money. OMG! Love this place! Chicken--fried or baked--is EXCELLENT!! Corn fritters are to die for, cheesy potatoes and baked beans are my favorite sides, but I haven't tried them all yet. I've lived here 10 years and just tried this Brown's location recently. Instant regular! They even have homemade baked goods. I could go on and on. I'll be back to try it all! read more

This place gets five stars solely based on my childhood love of browns chicken. I remember my grandma getting the cold chicken when I was younger and having it waiting when we came to visit. The corn fritters are amazing, especially with powdered sugar. The chicken is a really good deal, especially if you get it cold. read more

Absolutely terrible: old, dry, greasy chicken (it had obviously been sittting around for awhile - ugh). The pasta was even worse - mushy, bland, and meatless (it used to have meat in it). The sides were just as bad. We wound up throwing most of it away - just inedible. This place used to be so good. What happened? I wish that I could give it less than 1 star. I will never go here again and will tell everyone I can not to go - starting here. read more

I placed an online order at 5:20 p.m. and my order was not delivered until 7:05. The food arrived at merely room temperature. The fries were soggy, the hot dog buns were soggy. The fried okra had a TON of breading on it and the ample breading was chewy, not crispy. The fried shrimp were fine. The chicken tenders were very very good. The breading was not very crispy but still the chicken was delicious. If the food had arrived hot and fresh I am sure it would have been much better. When I called to inquire about my order, the woman who answered the phone was rude. Her only excuse was that they were busy and she offered no compensation for the insanely long delivery time. read more

It's been a couple of years since I stopped, but I wish I would have read the reviews before I did. Pretty much what others have said. Just left there after getting a refund for the 16 piece family meal purchased earlier. The reason I returned the meal, greasy crust on the chicken, meat was very dry and the mashed potatoes had dry brown lumps? Never made it to the Cole Slaw. It was obvious the chicken had been sitting awhile to the point that just looking at it looked unappetizing. And if your looking for value, this is not the place, especially when you factor in quality. 16 Piece Meal with 4 Large Sides and NO biscuits - 39.63! If you need perspective on this, look at White Fence Farm or KFC. They did refund my purchase no questions asked, but it was disappointing to see an establishment like this serving something that wasn't even worth getting for free. On a side note, the Portillos Franchise no longer owns this place. read more
