I was in town for work and reached out to a local friend who suggested this place. I went with an Alfie burger with blue cheese and grilled onion with onion rings and a simple fountain drink. The burger was very good but, next time I probably won't get the blue cheese. It was a little overpowering, but that's what I ordered so no complaints. I have been going to Alfie's for years. Their patty melt used to be excellent. Today I ordered a patty melt to go and it was awful. The burger was ordered medium, but was cooked rare. The rye bread had broken off pieces and was so full of grease it was soggy. $20 wasted on a patty melt that was thrown in the garbage. read more

Quite honestly the best place to stop in and eat a delicious burger cooked to temp. Thoughtful server, and lots of room to enjoy the great menu options. Fantastic onion rings too! Like some other reviews, we've been a loyal customer going back 30 years to the original location. Back then the burgers were to die for. Not anymore. We went there in September this year. We even had my brother and his wife join us because we wanted to impress them with Alfie's great burgers. My wife and I retired to Tucson, Arizona the end of 2018 so this was the first time since then that we ate there. It was a 'must do' for our trip. I was so embarrassed! The waitess took forever to even come to our table. We ordered our burgers and fries and it took thirty minutes to get our food and it was 8pm with few customers!!! Terrible. We finally received our food and the burgers were on par with a fast food restaurant. All were dry and overdone. The fries were nothing special. Our pop was pop. Our bill for four people was over $120 dollars! For crappy food. Totally opposite from the way they used to be. We will never go there again. Heed my warning! read more

I would be giving 5 stars for the food and service-because they were great. But got to the register to pay and I asked the woman with dark brown hair to please remove the service charge that was added to my total. She SNATCHED it out of my hand and SLAPPED the print out for me to sign !!! ALL while having a SOUR PUSS on her face!! My friend and I like this place a lot - but doubt we will return. Hubby has been eating here since (at least 50 years) a child and we have been eating here since we've known each other (42 years) We brought our kids when littles, teens and now they are adults with littles too - so we get larger table We generally go for the burgers but every so often we'll get other menu items. GARLIC SAUCE - don't skip asking for it ! It's generally served with the fried mushrooms - BUT we get a FULL order of onion rings and request the garlic sauce with them. Most of us also order a side of garlic sauce with our burgers too - try it ! It's a solid family focused, casual, good burger (along with other menu items) place which has never disappointed - can't believe I've never written a review previously ! We travel at least 30-40 minutes to get their cheeseburgers. They are delicious. Good quality meat and always done like we want. Our server Maria was very nice and attentive . Only complaint was, walking into ladies washroom was a gross perfume scent. What ever it is, I believe it's new....please get rid of it. We thought it was awful!. read more

I grew up in Glen Ellyn and, so, have been going to Alfie's, in both locations for many years. Met family there for dinner a couple of weeks ago and was a little disappointed. The burgers were nothing to brag about. Our margaritas were awful. Their selection of wine was disappointing. The service was fine until we wanted our check and we waited 25 minutes until one of our party went to find our waitress. I'll suggest somewhere else next time we want to get together. read more

I have been going to Alfie's since I was just a kid growing up in Glen Ellyn. It was a special place for the family to go that was delicious and affordable for our big family of 9!!! My first visit was back in 1973 when they had their location off of park and Roosevelt. We started taking our kids there when we moved to Wheaton in 1989. The food and service is amazing. Plenty of parking and great food selections. Love the decor and they still have dum-dums and mints like the old days. Can't beat tradition!!! read more

I've been a loyal Alfie's customer for 30 yrs; dating back to their previous location. Unfortunately, I'm done. Their burgers used to be delicious and juicy. Now they're dry and tasteless. The fries used to be good & crispy but now they're doughy and pasty. Even the pickles suck now. The half orders of fried mushrooms and zucchini were good but more like 1/4 orders. I can't believe that I've never eaten here. Alfies has been around for years but this is the first time I've come here. It came recommended by Family and boy I couldn't agree with them more. We were a party of nine which included four kids. They don't take reservations and we were a bit concerned about our wait on a Saturday night. Surprisingly it didn't take that long to be seated. Pretty quickly they came and asked for drink orders. Then gave us a few minutes to read the menu. I heard they have really good hamburgers so decided to order a basic cheeseburger. It was delicious! The beef was definitely fresh ground and freshly cooked. The hamburger was so big I had to cut it in half for another day. I also got a side salad which was extremely fresh and crisp, unlike so many other salads that are warm and wilted. I got the salad because I wanted to try the homemade garlic dressing. Delish!! We also had an order of fried mushrooms for our appetizer. Pretty good. Most of us had burgers but two folks did get the barbecue ribs. The ribs looked good. I might try them next time. Service wasn't bad for a Saturday evening. Our server did get a few things wrong but she corrected them immediately. Again mistakes happen but I truly think it's great when people step up. When you talk to people about Alfies they all have been going there for years. I've been here many times since we moved nearby. The place has a real warm and cozy vibe. They get their food out quickly and it's simple but good. I've only gotten the cheese burger there. It's basic, yet yummy! It comes plain and you can add on grilled onions or extras. The fries are always plentiful, hot and crispy. It's a great restaurant to bring the family to. It has that welcoming family vibe! We will be back! read more

If you enjoy cold hospital or nursing home food, you might want to stop at either of those spots instead of coming here, as the food would actually be better there than here. One of the things my party and i particularly enjoyed was the way we ordered our burgers and wings and waited so long that we all actually aged 3 years. You would have thought this was about to be the best meal you ever had with the amount of time it took the chefs in the back to dry out all of our food and bring out to the table. You either love Alfie's for what it is- a weird sports pub with medieval decor and an old school diner vibe, or you don't. I happen to love it, not just for its uniqueness but also for its salmon salad and grilled broccolini. It's a healthy dinner option (even if the potato skin appetizers that I always get with it aren't....). I give it 4 stars because the food is pretty good, not stellar, but I'm always happy to eat there. And the carry out holds up just as well. Its been our favorite place to to since the early 80s. Used to love the burgers but they changed. The burgers and fries are bad. Than we started ordering steak and baked potatoes. It was decent. Last 2 time they over did the medium steak to well done, but there baked potatoes where hot and fresh loved it. Now there baked potatoes are stone cold and the butter does not even melt. Don't tell Andy you know him from your childhood or he'll think you just want a free meal. He's not one for small talk and shouldn't be out front with the customers. I am so disappointed to be writing this. I have been going to Alfie's for more than 20 years. First it was the delicious burgers that got me hooked and then it was the potato skins. I crave them and plan special times opportunities to go there since I don't get out that was as much in the last few years. The last time I went I was disappointed in the skins. They were too done/ burnt and just not great. I thought it was a fluke and of course went back recently. This time was even worse. The skins were not only burnt but the cheese was over cooked and melted but also cold. In addition, the rest of the food my table ordered was BAD. Granted, the other meals were not the burger, but the roast beef sandwich and chicken fingers were very low quality. The Ranch dipping sauce was tasteless and the sauce for the roast beef sandwich was nothing more than a ketchup with a slight tang. We found it funny that the server never asked "how is everything?" and assumed it was because she already knew it was bad. I don't know what happened to Alfie's in the last 1-2 years but it is NOT the Alfie's I and many have loved for decades. I ordered the chicken sandwich special yesterday evening, and what I received was a chicken patty from the grocery store and a bun with not very good sauce that came with. We also ordered fried mushrooms that only came with one aioli sauce and when we asked for a second we received blue cheese dressing. Then we got a to-go order asking for a Reuben and baked potato to go, and when we got home it had a Reuben and French fries with no baked potato, but sour cream and butter. The cherry on top was a terribly rude man who coughed in my face upon paying for the meal. We just waited over 30 minutes for a simple order at Alfie's and it wasn't even crowded. Service was terrible! We may do a take-out again, but never will sit in. They brought my husband's soup 30 minutes after he ordered it instead of right away before dinner. read more
