I love, love Dr. Chung! I've been his patient for almost 13 years and he is the absolute BEST! He is extremely knowledgeable, takes his time to listen to my concerns, never rushes the visit! Every time, he feels it necessary or I tell him I'd like to see a specialist to reassure me (I'm not hypochondriac at all), he always gives me a referral. He treats me like gold! In June I got an HMO where I had to choose a new primary care doctor, and saw great reviews of Dr. Chung, so I chose him. I had a physical there in June and another visit a couple of weeks ago because I had some additional medical issues. In both of these appointments, the treatment I received from Dr. Chung was awful, and came nowhere near the standard of care one would expect from their primary care physician. Your health and wellbeing are so important - which is why it's so important that you never become a patient of Dr. Chung's. On my first visit, the annual physical, Dr. Chung spent a total of 4 minutes in the room if I'm being generous. After going through the regular PCP motions, he asked me if I had any questions or concerns about my health, of which I had a few and wanted to ask him about. But when I did attempt to ask him about each of these concerns, he rebuffed me, saying he didn't have time to address them and that I would need to make another appointment to address these issues. At probably every doctor's visit I've ever had in my life, the doctor asks if you have any further questions or concerns. Whenever I replied, all of the doctors tried to address my questions and concerns in some way - a little advice, a prescription, a referral, etc. - until this appointment with Dr. Chung. I was stunned, and I still am. So I made a follow-up appointment and had it a few weeks ago, in which I wanted to talk about 4 concerns, 3 of which I put in the notes in the request for the appointment, so that the doctor would know exactly what I was coming in for. Though I won't reveal the exact medical issues, I could've told you before the appointment that what I needed for each of them was a referral to a specialist. When I showed up to that appointment, however, Dr. Chung started the conversation by saying, "There's no way we're going to get through all of these issues. I have time for maybe 2." When I asked why we couldn't get through all the issues, he said that he just didn't have time to get through them all in one appointment. He then told me - again - that another appointment would be needed to address the other 2 issues. So, once Dr. Chung's primary goal had been achieved -- negotiating down the number of my issues he was going to address so that he could force me to have to come back and get to bill for another appointment -- Dr. Chung finally started working on what is the primary goal for every other doctor, but only the secondary goal for him: figuring out the best way to treat my medical problems. Sure enough, when Dr. Chung actually allowed me to speak and tell him about each of these problems, he quickly agreed that each issue had to be addressed with a referral to a specialist. Dr. Chung actually spent almost the entire appointment on his computer searching for the doctors in my plan's network that he refers patients to. In total, he probably spent about 15 minutes with me in the room, but it was spent searching for 3 doctors who his office apparently refers patients to all the time. On the second doctor, whose name Dr. Chung couldn't remember, I started to search myself in order to speed things up so that there would be a chance of addressing more of my issues. I found the doctor he was thinking of on ZocDoc within 30 seconds. So, despite his best efforts, Dr. Chung actually was able to issue 3 referrals instead of just 2. To add icing to the cake, one of the specialists he referred me to has moved and no longer works at the practice, so I will have to get a different referral for that one, too. For the last issue - which I guarantee will simply require a referral to a specialist - I would have to make another appointment - again, not because the medical issues need more time to address than can be fit in a single visit, but because of ineptitude with a basic computer function. Thankfully for me and my health, I will not allow him to pull the same trick again. Dr. Chung provides an unacceptably poor level of care. Dr. Bruce Chung is amazing! He is what all Doctors should be: experienced, smart, knowledgeable, human. It has been more than TWENTY years that I have been seeing Dr. Chung. And the best thing is he really cares about his patients, and unlike many doctors he really listens to your problems. He is very good about coming up with the best solution to help treat the many medical issues we all encounter. Dr. Chung is very informed about the latest developments and studies in the medical field. He also takes the time to be thorough and does not rush you out of the office like so many other MD's. He takes the time to explain the various options and the risks and benefits of each one. It is important to build a good relationship with your PCP and follow up throughout the years. The practice is well run, clean and neat, and I have never had any issues with billing or the front office staff who are always friendly when I call up and great at getting back to me when I call up for something. Thanks to Ms. Nobu! The online patient portal lets the doctor send you notes on lab results explaining them to you. I really appreciate being able to view all my test results on the patient portal and being able to have blood tests at the office and convenient! The nurse staffs are very friendly and professional. I have been a patient of Dr. Bruce Chung for over 12 years. he is a soft-spoken doctor who gives detailed information and answers all questions needed. He does not make you feel like you are bothering him. His office and waiting room are incredibly clean the bathrooms are clean and he has many secretaries to help with anything needed. He has other doctors for gynecology or other Issues. He excepts almost all health health-insurance. And gives excellent referrals for any other test or doctors or specialists needed. I've been very happy with him, and I trust him as an excellent MD. All of the specialists he has referred me to have all been great! If you are in need of a doctor Dr. Bruce Chung is an Excellent choice. My only issue that I have is the front desk. I have gotten frustrated on several occasions for different issues. read more

Contrary to the review, I had an awful experience. Signed up for appointment with dr chung and believe they have overbooked, ended up with a nurse practitioner. Receptionist seem to not speak the english language very well, when I asked that my appointmnet was with dr chung. The receptionist smiled and repeatedly said "sorry" in a very smirky manner as if there is nothing I could do.. ( i guess the arrogance did bother me a little bit. It was like take it or leave it kind of attitude) Appointment was set for 5:00 and met the practitioner at 6:27. Figures since they overbooked. I went to Dr Chung for almost eight years. I liked him, he was very nice, and seemed to care. However, the office and staff are not great and there is zero compassion, loyalty, or gratefulness no matter how long you have been a patient. One time, I owed $20 because they forgot to charge me a co-pay, within a few weeks I had a bill that said if I don't pay they are taking me to collections. On the other hand, one time I had a credit for some reason for around $60, they did not tell me about until I went back six months later. Now, I don't live in the states anymore and I came back to visit, got the flu, called them, told them I was a patient for a long time and asked if I could see the doctor, they told me it's a $220 min fee. read more

Quite possibly the worst doctor's office experience EVER. AND I didn't even set foot in the office for the 2nd+3rd to be visits. Let me break it down so it is easy for me to write and for readers to understand: [History of Attendance] I had gone to this doctor's office because of a cold and did not have any issues. [Yesterday's Call] This time around I wanted to schedule a physical as well as get immunization/booster shots for travel. The office manger told me that I needed to split up the visits as the doctor wanted to focus on one area and the insurance company did not allow patients to combine the two visits. Slightly confused, but busy at work I agreed and made 2 separate appointments. The skeptic in me, got the best of me... I called my insurance company and the rep said that there is nothing in the fine print of my insurance that validates the statement from the doctor's office. My speculation was that they wanted me to co-pay twice or were just coming up with some ridiculous bullshit. [Today's Call] After speaking with the insurance company I was pretty annoyed because I felt conned. So, I called the office back because I couldn't take off the work day to go to the Thursday appointment and just wanted to combine the two to my already scheduled Saturday appointment. I was the told the same as the day prior to - that the Doctor wanted to focus on one area and the new kicker was that a physical takes 30 minutes and the combined two would take too long. This did not make any sense. I explained that I had called my insurance company and explained what I was told. I even brought up the point about paying 2 copays instead of one as a K.O. to my duel with the doctor's office. The lady was was unapologetic and very curt. I canceled the appointment on Thursday and was going to just go for an appointment on Saturday for immunization. [Plan B] While thinking over a piece of Hershey's chocolate my coworker gave me after hearing my duel with the doctor's office, I decided to call another doctor's office. Waddayaknow... The new doctor lets me combine the two visits and explained the price breakdown as well as what would be covered and what wouldn't be. Talk about some great customer service. Depending on how this Doctor works out, I will let all of you know how things go. I probably sound like the most bitter individual here. But, this was very ridiculous and I wanted to share this info with fellow yelpers and reading leechers as I once was. It's unfortunate that it took this for me to write my first review... One of the hardest things about moving to a new town where you don't know anyone is finding new professionals you can trust with valuable assets such as your car or home. This becomes all the more important when it's your life that you're entrusting in someone else's hands. Thankfully there's Yelp, and I decided to go with Dr. Chung after reading Vincent's review. Although they were booked for a few weeks out when I tried to schedule a routine physical, I can now report back that it was worth the wait. Dr Chung and staff quite possibly have the best bedside manner of any medical professional I've ever been to. The office wasn't lavish, but it was clean and looked like it was well equipped with the latest medical accoutrements. The receptionists were all smiles and looked like they actually enjoyed working there. During my exam, the doc ran through all the normal tests, explaining each one along the way. He even pulled out an anatomy book to show me what he was checking out at one point. This doctor care's about one thing and one thing only - money. He doesn't care about your well being, he doesn't care about whether your in excuciating pain. He just cares about extracting as many billable dollars from you and your insurance copany as he can possibly get away with. My girlfriend is right now in a taxicab in excuciating pain on her way home from work in order to get her medication. Dr. Chung has just refused to renew her prescription for Endometriosis, a condition that causes truly horrific pain when it strikes. She has been diagnosed with this condition for years and Dr. Chung is fully aware of it, however he has just refused to renew her long-standing prescription over the phone - his advice instead: "If the pain's so bad - go to the emergency room". I am absolutely furious When you're in pain like this minutes count. If you're a woman know that this man has zero sympathy for you. He insists on an office visits for the most basic of prescription renewals, even for chronic conditions that have been part of the patient's clinical history for years. All this jerk wants to do is bill insurance companies and if that means leaving his patients to linger in excruciating pain for hours in a waiting room then he couldn't care less. We have been with City Care Family Practice for about 15 years. Dr. Bruce Chung is an exceptional doctor and is very caring towards the patient's needs. He has been taking care of our children since they were small and now continues to see them as adults. Dr. Chung is respectful and very informative with his patients. The office staff is very courteous and attentive. They go out of their way to make sure the patient is helped. The office has weekend hours for appointments as needed. I've seen Dr. Chung now for two years with my wife. We've had a change of insurance (ours old plan was good, the new plan is even better) -- and we've opted to keep him. If you want a knowledgable GP, you have that in him. I miss the days when your physician could spend more time with you, but those days are long gone. What helps to make up for it is that Dr. Chung takes good notes and is quick to come back to them. He's embraced technology and it certainly helps make up a bit for what's been lost in modern medicine and interpersonal communications. best of all, he makes us feel like we have a partner in our health. All said, I do have one honest complaint, its not about the quality of the care, its a technology issue... when the doctor's office wants to communicate information through the web-portal... logging in is difficult at best, and the system tends not to allows password acceptance, which is a pain in the butt... but if I call, the staff rectifies the issue really quickly. It happens repeatedly -- solely a software issue, so no lowered star rating from me. And now, my service to the Yelp Community. Dr. Chung came recommended to us, having seen a number of Japanese people (my wife is Japanese, and she wanted someone a bit more familiar with her culture -- she's been pleased). I read a review about a year ago that really was uncomplimentary toward Dr. Chung, by a patient who'd been prescribed some medicine with adverse effects. I asked Dr. Chung about the issue, and without breaking doctor/patient privilege, he told me his side. Having heard both sides, I want to tell you my thoughts. Don't buy all of what you read. Some use Yelp to vent anger and frustration, and everyone who does -- especially millennials -- feel they are qualified critics (of nothing of course), can damage the usefulness of the service. Dr. Chung is a great physician, and he's got a nice practice with great responsive staff -- every time we've called. My review is reflective of those merits, and hope that it may be an honest tool in guiding you in selecting a physician you like and feel comfortable with. There are no doubt wonderful GP's (I previously had one, but he stopped taking all private insurance), you will be hard pressed to find one of better caliber than Dr. Chung. read more

I have gone to Dr. Chung for over ten years now, from when he was in the Sidney Hillman Health Center on West 16Th street. At that time I had constant strep throat, always sick. Every time I went to the clinic, seeing a different doctor, I would be put on antibiotics again. This would make me incredibly stomach sick, take forever, and at best, seem to resolve the issue slightly. After being on antibiotics for on and off for over a series of years, being on antibiotics straight for two months, and getting sick again, I was introduced to Dr. Chung. He looked at my chart, and told me that in all likelihood my tonsils were shot, and I needed to have my tonsils removed. Uncommon for an adult, yes....but after they were gone I had my life back. Mind you I had seen at least SIX other doctors there, and none of them would even consider it. So when he moved to a private office, I chose to go along with him. He has taken every insurance I have ever had, including 1199 which is a notoriously poor paying plan. His reason for taking it? It's a plan for health care workers, and how would it be for him as a health care provider NOT to take it?How can you NOT love that reasoning? I'll be the first to admit that his office workers are for the most part, charmless, and sometimes rude. However, what I tell myself is that they create policies that allow him to simply focus on health care...which he does REALLY, REALLY well. A yearly physical is it's own appointment...which if done thoroughly, IT SHOULD BE. You can get any doctor to do a quick once over. The point is that he spends time with you, allows you to ask plenty of questions, and focuses on the many different aspects of your life that affect your health. I have referred many friends and patients to Dr. Chung, and they have all been quite pleased. He also has a woman doctor in the same practice: because he was out, she did my immunizations and anti-malaria meds prior to a trip to Central America. The doctors are great, the front of the house staff, not so much. As a patient of this practice for almost 10 years I would expect to be treated accordingly, at least with a little respect. As Eujins above rating stated, they will now scam you and code your visits to make the most money possible. It is truly very sad as I will now have to switch my PCP. I had my annual physical, which I do every year. The usual is checked and then I am given a prescription for anti anxiety - This year apparently they decided this wasn't part of my physical and should have been scheduled for a separate visit. Why would I come back again for something that has been taken care of every year during my physical. They are sneaky and will bill anything they can to try and make more money. When I called to question them about my "balance" the receptionist was the most unprofessional and rude employee I have ever come across. She actually cackled and said I don't care. Shame on you Dr Chung, you should have courteous employees, or at the very least one who speaks english. Sounds like the same thing happened to me. Appt with Dr Chung.... Based on him behind schedule asked to see a nurse practitioner instead of waiting. Very Impersonal service. I come in once a year for a physical and can't get time with my primary doctor. That is a total joke. More time in my physical was spent by nurses on their laptops filling out forms then the 5 mins checking on my vitals. The nurses move you from room to room to break up the overall waiting time from your appointment. They should reduce appointments scheduled for doctor since he is unable to keep up with schedule. Bloodwork that was needed is done offsite as well. They refuse to discuss any other minor issues at physical exam. They want you to come back and set another appointment. Probably wanting additional $ for another visit to doctor. Service is friendly, but always behind schedule. Out health Care system use in shambles and Dr Chung's office is a perfect example. read more

When one contemplates which professions would qualify as both "noble" and "compassionate," medicine would certainly rank highly. One wishes, however, "if only all of its practitioners were as mindful." While different patients may have qualitatively different experiences with the same professional, based on my experience and my wife's, I cannot in good conscience recommend to anyone that they go to Dr. Bruce K. Chung first before trying someone else. For example, if you see a doctor once for the flu, should you have to come back just to get a refill for the cough medicine that was prescribed in too small a quantity to begin with (and be charged a $25 refill fee by the Dr. just for his prescription, not the medicine itself)? Isn't it customary courtesy, let alone common decency, for a Dr.'s office to call the pharmacy and authorize the refill over the phone? Shouldn't a doctor personally return phone calls to a patient instead of expecting an ailing patient to return to the Dr.'s office just to hear the Dr.'s voice? These things may not cross your threshold of expectations, but they have crossed mine, so I'm looking elsewhere to get my medical needs met. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Chung for over 15 years. He's kind, knowledgeable and easy to talk to. His staff is polite and they always schedule same-day appointments when I need them. Several bad experiences and I finally switched primary care doctors. He was completely inaccessible in an emergency because he was "booked until six" and unwilling to speak with patient on phone. In another experience, could net get him to give an emergency referral to a specialist. For routine stuff, they kept bringing me back for pointless followups, I almost felt like it was a billing scam. So 0 for 2 in emergencies when it would have taken the bare minimum effort to help, plus the feel like he really doesn't care when I was in there. read more

Dr. Chung is a decent guy. He's been my M.D. for 7 years. He's humane, personable, not moody, and gives me the time of day. He appears throrough and has an office that is modest, yet clean. I can't ask for much more than that. He also seems to have a pretty good grasp, medically speaking, on the major diseases that cross his plate. He is accommodating about writing 90-day prescriptions and is responsive. He has, in the past, had an employee (a nurse, I think), who had an attitude and spoke rudely to patients, particularly about the issue of "you can't bring up two issues in just one visit; you need to book them separately". She no longer works there. One slight drawback of his practice is that there is no phlebotomy lab nearby, so you're off to Quest when you need blood drawn. When a crisis emerges, he can work you in and you never have to wait more than 3 days for an apointment b/c he doesn't make appts more than 3 days out. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Chung since 1991 and have been satisfied with his abilities and style in that time. However his staff and business model is another thing. in last 8 or so years the office has become much more like a healthcare factory which really degrades the doctor-patient relationship I valued back in the early days of his practice. These days I find it a hassle to deal with the staff -- as noted in previous posts they force you to come in for multiple appointments when one appointment or a follow up phone call should suffice. I am looking elsewhere for another doctor where the staff is less impersonal, inflexible and robotic. read more

My husband and I went to Dr. Chung for the first time last week and he was wonderful. He is genuinely interested in his patients, and he takes great care to understand exactly what is going on with each of his patients. He also explains everything as he goes along, which is really helpful! The office staff also was extremely friendly and accommodating! We had not received our new insurance cards in the mail yet and were thinking we'd have to pay the whole amount for the appointment up front, but the lady who was helping us just used our social security numbers to look up our information on the insurance website! They saved us from having to front the money ourselves, and overall they were just extremely nice. We will definitely continue going to him for as long as we live in New York. read more

I have visited doctor for convenience of having office close by. Doctor is average but you can only discuss one problem. For next problem you need another appointment at other time. At yearly health check up you cannot talk about foot pain. Again you need separate appointment. Your phone calls after a visit can never be returned by doctor and you make one more appointment. Entire practice is about how to get you back in clinic. It may cost you 2-3 hours of lost work hours but there are no exceptions. Even if doctor forgets to renew your prescription you have to go again for visit or pay $20 for called in prescription. VISIT him only if you have lots of time to keep visiting so he can bill. read more

Indeed the worst doctors experience ever. I give this office the worst rating possible. I was charged almost $300 (with insurance) when all I needed was a simple referral to get blood work done. It all started when I wanted to check my glucose, cholesterol, thyroid levels etc. The girl on the phone while I was making my appt asked whether this is an emergency to which I responded no. She said do you have a purpose for coming in. I stated what I wanted. Low and behold, what I didn't know was that she was going to charge my visit to the insurance as a "diagnosis" instead of as a preventative checkup. When I received the bill from them at home, I immediately called the insurance to state this fraudulent activity. However, the insurance said they understand my frustration but it is the offices fault for billing you as a diagnosis when there is no reason that they should have. Well, I went in to speak with the office manager, and that was when I truly realized this office is horrible. She knew I was waiting for her yet purposely made me wait over 30 minutes, just to say three words. From the moment I began to explain my case she looked at me bluntely in the face, and said THERE IS NO WAY I will change what we charged you. She did not even give me another second and walked away. She is the RUDEST person I have ever met. Yet she feels justified in that situation which I have no control over to treat me as less of a person. I do not care to pay for anything that I rightfully owe. However, it is due to the way they purposely charged my insurance as "diagnosis" when this should have been a regular check up. Getting blood work is not a diagnosis, it is a preventative measure and should be charged to the insurance as such. For those people who have not worked with insurances BE CAREFUL many offices try to do what they did which is to make patients pay the most they can, by coding it the way they want to and patients who are not in the medical field do not realize it was under the offices control. Insurances only pay out to the medical offices a fraction of the total claim they should get because of the agreement they have. Therefore, offices code to the disadvantage of patients to make the patient pay the whole difference that they know otherwise the insurance wouldn't even cover 25% of that total. Offices have a lot of control over this depending on how they code it to the insurance. To top it all off, I found it very strange when I was filling out my initial paperwork they made me leave a copy of my credit card with my signature to authorize any charges on file. I am very careful about my finances but they said there was no way around this. I guess they do this type of fraud often, and they need your credit card information to charge it. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO THIS OFFICE. BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE STAFF. ESPECIALLY THE OFFICE MANAGER. SHE SHOULD NOT BE WORKING WITH THE PUBLIC. read more
