Passing through Greenwich, we wanted to do something but it was too cold for anything outside, we saw this on the map and decided to stop in. We went on a Saturday at 3 & it was pretty busy, there was a small event for kids so there was a few areas set up for activities. This museum is so beautiful, the grounds and maintained well and there's even installations outside. Inside there was a nice shop & cafe on the lower floor, with most the the museum on the third floor. It took us about an hour to see all the exhibits! Came here for a private event and couldn't get over how nice the space was! Plenty of parking in the back, for the event it was valet only. On walking in, the spot was packed, they had paintings on display and some drinks / appetizers being passed around. On the staircase there were some entertainers. The shop was also open, it has some cute gift ideas. read more

We had such an amazing time at the Bruce! I brought a group of Tiger Scouts, (1st graders) and the experience was incredible from start to finish. The geology exhibit had a little something for everyone -- from beautiful rock and mineral displays to fascinating geodes. The presentation of the information was great, and I think the kids really retained it . The artwork , animal connections really brought science to life. The staff was absolutely wonderful and showed so much patience and enthusiasm with our young scouts (which is no small feat with a group of energetic Tiger Scouts!). Thank you for creating such a welcoming and engaging space for kids to explore and learn. We'll definitely be back! read more

This Greenwich museum is a great way to spend a few hours. It is a spacious and modern space, renovated and reopened in 1993. The original building was a house constructed in 1857. It mixes both science and art with changing exhibitions and permanent displays. The magnificent mineral collection was donated by a Robert Weiner who became interested in minerals when visiting this museum at 7 years old. Art, education, science for kids and adults. Regular admission is $20 and there is free ample parking. There is also a cafe and gift shop and elevator to take you to and from the displays and exhibitions which are on the third floor. read more

Lovely spot for an afternoon. The museum is beautiful, with amazing impressionist art, gems and geodes and fossils. It is definitely worth checking out if you've never been. The cafeteria is solid too, though very expensive. Not sure how you can justify a $16 dollar chicken salad sandwich and chips. "We're a museum" isn't a great reason to charge so much. read more

Five stars for the mineral exhibit ! Great fun for all - press the button and watch the rocks glow! There's also a section on radioactivity that has a working Geiger counter. Interesting and educational. Bruce Museum is so much better post-renovations. Located near Greenwich Ave and not too far from the train station, the location is convenient, although parking spots can get crowded in this area (especially during popular times when people go to the kids playground across the street). read more

This review is only based on the current state of the museum - about 2/5 of the rooms are closed for renovation until Spring 2021. I only hope the shark and crabs mentioned in other reviews are enjoying their vacation. Currently, the museum is exhibiting three rooms - one with an exhibit from Laurtis Anderson Ring, one neat science exhibit "Under the Skin", and 2D cabinets of curiosities. They were all interesting to see, and I shall have to come back to see what I missed. Parking was ample, it goes all around the building and on this warm February Saturday, there were plenty of spots in front. There is also art on the grounds outside, so allow extra time to take a quick walk around! read more

This museum is great for adults and kids. Great place for family. We were here on a Sunday afternoon. Nice art collection and science. It is not a big museum but you can definitely spend more than an hour here with your kids. There are section for art, animals, and stones. There is also a playground for the kids right across the museum building. The cafe were not open when we were there. Easy to find parking. Definitely worth visiting. read more

Cute little museum that holds informative exhibitions and permanent collections. Staff here are really nice and the little store actually carries pretty good selection of gifts to choose from. A nice docent gentleman was available to help explain everything in the museum. A few seasonal exhibitions looked like a lot of time and thought were put in to gather the items together. Each description of the paintings and items were well explained and they were thoughtful comments. Permanent collections looked like they would be good education material for kids. Also, there was an exhibition that had local involvement of high school students which were amazing. Definitely a nice local museum that's recommended for locals. read more

I have been a member and going to the Bruce ever since I can remember. I admit this is the first time I have been since it was renovated and was so looking forward to reconnecting. There is none of the charm it once possessed. I realize they spend a great deal of money with the upgrade but that is not reason they had to destroy the Bruce's charm. I was not happy with the admissions process and found it sterile and uninviting. I used to be greeted by a smiling, welcoming staff member, nor did I have to wear a sticker! Now I am "checked in" by a man in a black suit with out a smile. It lacks the charm and ambiance I had been so use to. I found the layout confusing and sterile. I actually got lost at one point wandering from one exhibit into the next. I know that there are many valuable works of art displayed and that they need to have "security guards" watching everyone's move but I found these people to be almost intrusive as though we weren't trusted. I couldn't relax and really appreciate the art work. I was also very disappointed with the gift shop. I used to go they just to shop. It's smaller and has a great many fewer choices. The new cafeteria is a nice touch and relatively affordable but it would be nice if they offers a few choices for people who have certain dietary restrictions. I am happy to see that they have retained the permanent exhibits. I hope that the powers that be take some of my comments to heart, at least those who might remember what the Bruce use to be. read more

We visited this museum on a brutally hot day to fill a portion of the afternoon in air conditioned comfort while visiting the area. It was nice to see as this museum is important to our host. It's got quite an eclectic set of exhibits, from minerals and rocks to animal displays along with a small permanent collection of classic art. There is usually a visiting exhibit also and we saw some of Andy Warhol's works, mostly of his less well known styles. There was one group I really liked a lot and so different from what we associate with him. The staff was casual and friendly. There were hardly any other visitors when we were there. read more

Call this an art museum? It sucks!! Parking is on a hill. It's noisy, right next to railroad. The 'person in charge' is pretentiously not present. What a droopy event at this bruce kiddie art class pen that looks like a cross between a lunar observatory and a low chinese food restaurant. I was at the Bruce Museum during their Tour of the Olympics exhibit. It was very well done. There were items on display from both the classic and modern games. It also highlighted extraordinary athletes in fairly elaborate detail. It did have a couple items to get your hands on; I was able to grab a javelin and a discus to get an idea of how heavy they are. Parking was a breeze; there are plenty of spaces. The main draw for me was the Olympics exhibit, but the museum does offer traditional exhibits of local life and art. It did not interest me nearly as much as the Olympics section did, but it was nice. read more

We finally had the chance to visit the Bruce Museum earlier this afternoon. We have an Annual Family Membership to the Intrepid Museum in NYC, which is part of the ASTC network. Being part of the ASTC network grants you free admission to select museums around the country with Bruce Museum being one of them. The museum is conveniently located just off of Exit 3 on I-95. We turned into the parking lot at around 2:30 PM on a Saturday afternoon and the place was practically empty. Lots of parking available in the lot but I noticed that there were many metered spaces along the roadway just outside of the museum. We entered building to a very friendly and inviting front reception area. We showed our Intrepid Membership Card and were granted access. The regular admission prices are $10 for adults, $8 for students and children under 5 area free. The front area had bathrooms and a coat closet/area. There were two temporary (I think) exhibits at the time, one to the left of the reception area an the other straight ahead. The main museum is straight ahead and to the right. Lots of information on the various rocks and minerals not only found within the earth, but specified to Connecticut as well. You follow the path which gives some history on the evolution of the earth and how the various resources played roles during each time. You next see the animal exhibits which shows a few habitats. The only live animal there was a fish. The museum itself is small and even with ready everything, you can probably finish everything in under 2 hours. To make the trip more worthwhile, you may want to wait for a temporary exhibit that you are interested in. I would recommend to plan this as an early/mid day stop to break up the day. On the way out, there is a gift shop. Lots of interesting items in there. Be sure to stop by on the way, you won't leave there empty handed. As a nice convenient bonus, right across from the Museum is a playground "Bruce Park". I am not sure if this is public or private, but there were a few kids playing there at the time. read more

I went to the last weekend and had a truly wonderful time. There was a brilliant exhibit on the Prints of Martin Lewis and they had a video running of how to make an etching and to transfer it over to a print. I am a Fine Art major and I found this wonderful, a very nice little touch. There was also an exhibit of the Drawing by Rembrandt and his students and this was beautiful as well. There was a painting by Rembrandt called "Portrait of a Man with Arms Akimbo" on display and when I turned the corner to see it, it took my breath away. Amazing! The staff was very friendly and I loved the overall layout of the museum, there were nooks and crannies to explore around every corner. The outside landscape was fun to explore too, I went on a beautiful fall day, so we had fun checking out all the sculptures outside. The gift store was very overpriced, but it is a gift store inside a museum...this comes to be expected. I can't wait to go again! read more

This is a lovely hidden gem in Greenwich. We were visiting from out of town and decided to check out the museum. We were fascinated by their mineral collection. We got to see a live feeding to crabs, horseshoe crabs, fish and the first feed to the brand new baby brown banded shark that had recently hatched. Art collection was lovely. Staff was polite and knowledgeable. The gift shop is the BEST!!! Cool tea towels, Scarves, jewelry, puzzles, rock soap, trinkets of all kinds for all ages. Classy, beautiful things in all price ranges. Totally fun and unique gifts - clearly the person curating has great taste and we loved how many of the items in the gift shop relate to the exhibits. Small, boutique-y type museum that has a little bit of everything. We went in on a Sunday, and there was plenty of on-site parking. The setting is gorgeous; lots of trees and shade. Admission is very affordable; $7/adult for nonmembers, children under 5 are free. There is fine art, modern art, natural history, general history, and even a section where there are live marine animals (horseshoe crabs, starfish, lobster). We took advantage of the family tours and our kid was able to touch a starfish, hermit crab, lobster, and oyster. Pretty cool if you ask me. There is no cafeteria, but there is a very cute gift shop. Sells lots of chocolate, Connecticut souvenirs, and fine jewelry. A little bit more upscale than most museum gift shops, great selections. Overall this museum has a little bit of something for everyone; but I wouldn't plan on spending a day here. We saw everything and did the children's tour and I would give it 2 hours, tops. read more

Conveniently located within walking distance of the Greenwich train station and downtown Main Street. The park across the street is gorgeous as well and very easy to walk to. After my second visit to the Bruce, my review had to go from a 5 to a 4, which is still pretty good. Everything positive I thought the first visit still stands: -Friendly security staff -Amazing collection of gemstones, minerals, fossils, and other natural history items -Well curated revolving fine art exhibits -Excellent signage and interactive displays, especially for small children However, this visit was accompanied by an "I'm miserable therefore I want you to be miserable" receptionist. She was not very pleasant to me, my guests, or other visitors that came in, granted those other visitors were pushy and entitled who wouldn't wait until their turn. But as a museum member, I was a bit shocked that she was kind of snappy. Other than that though, the Bruce doesn't disappoint and is located in a beautiful building on a hill. read more

A treasure of a small museum. I enjoyed their recent Northern Baroque Splendor exhibit which was extremely high quality and well curated. I want to give a special highlight to the tour docent Milton who was extremely knowledgeable and did a great job of interweaving the progression of history and the collection. This is a very nice little museum. I would recommend 1.5-2 hours to explore, it is definitely not a stay-all-day museum. During the time I visited there was a "Dinosaurs of China" exhibit which was lots of fun for my daughter who loves dinosaurs. The permanent collections include some beautiful natural history displays, as well as some information on the history of the area. There was a large section devoted to geology which was very cool for kids who enjoy earth science. I took one star off because of the lady in the gift shop who shuffled my child and myself out nearly an hour before closing, and whom refused to tell us the way to the washroom - insisting "we are about to close". I visited yesterday on a whim to see the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibit (on loan from a museum in Greece and on display through early January 2018), and it was just amazing. The permanent collections weren't that exciting, but this one exhibit made it worth the very reasonable $10 entrance fee. I'll be keeping an eye out for interesting exhibits in the future. read more

this is a very nice, smaller museum that is set down by the water in greenwich. it would make a nice day walking up and down greenwich ave checking out some shops, getting lunch and seeing whatever show is here. we came for the Walter Wick: Games, Gizmos and Toys in the Attic show and it was pretty neat stuff especially if you have seen any of his childrens books. they also had a pretty interesting show of rocks if you are interested in geology it was worth seeing. read more

This is a Lovely museum, and a great place to spend a few hours on a gloomy day. We visited when they had a special on Abraham Lincoln, and it was absolutely fabulous. Holding a private function during the day for hours, in this case a board of trustees catered luncheon, turning away a number of visitors from seeing the Roz Chast exhibit which closes this week is odd. This sort of private event should have been held after hours. The number of people who were told to come back in several hours were all very annoyed. One man was rounding up visitors to make sure people would write the board and complain. To not post this inconvenience on the website shows a great lack of regard for visitors, especially those from out of town like myself. It also is insulting to the artist. I will not be returning and will certainly not recommend this museum. read more
