The mansion has been closed for two years to renovate the electrical/HVAC system and recently reopened for public tours. They'll be opening the basement floor to show the bowling alley and vault sometime next year. If you're in the area on Dec 14, they'll be open for a festive Christmas event.

Nicholas Roerich is a Russian painter mostly known for his paintings of the Himalayas. He was also…read moreknown as a mystic and explorer. This museum has around 200 Roerich paintings and drawings in storage and on display. The paintings are serene, mostly landscapes in blues, pinks, lilac colors. Some of his sketches and designs are also on display. The architecture of the building is beautiful too. On the first floor there is a narrow hallway (hard to navigate with others around) with his family history, though I wish the museum taught more about his political beliefs, spirituality, and views on mysticism and telecommunication, as they are quite interesting. That being said, they do mention these things on their comprehensive website. Entry is free, though donations welcome. Staff friendly. You can buy prints and postcards as well as books and trinkets in the gift shop. It's a little out of the way, but there are other nearby hidden gems in uptown, including The Hispanic Society museum and library. You can also take a trip to Riverside Drive and park and Grant's Tomb. All of those stops are free as well.

The luminosity reflected in the mountains was powerful. They also have a lot of information about his engagement in mysticism and his efforts toward protecting cultural monuments and promoting peace. The museum itself is housed in a lovely old mansion down by Riverside Drive. We were also made to feel welcome by the person at the front desk who provided us a lot of information about the collection and the artist. One nice touch is that they have some beehives next to the museum and they sell the honey harvested from those hives in the museum. The honey is delicious!

The Knickerbocker Ice Festival celebrates the history of the region's 19th century ice industry and is named after the Knickerbocker Ice Company, which harvested ice for global trade from Rockland Lake, where this festival is installed. The 2026 festival, which took place last weekend, featured ice sculptures with live carving demonstrations, snow igloos, bonfires, a woodland portrait installation honoring Ramapough Munsee Lenape women, and historical exhibits under the welcome pavilion. Thanks to the recent snowstorms and cold blasts we've been blessed/cursed with, Rockland Lake froze solid enough to walk on, and adults & kids happily slid around and frolicked on the slippery surface. For a festival, I wish there had been more festivities. Only a handful of ice sculptures dotted the lakefront walk (though they are beautiful and detailed, and were carved live over the festival weekend where yould watch artist Shintaro Okamoto and his crew at work), and limited food options (jerk chicken food truck and bakery - though the bakery ran out of hot chocolate by 2pm on the day we went). We arrived early afternoon of the first day and igloos were still being built by the various sponsorship teams, so perhaps day two saw more action. I later saw photos on social media of ice sculptures looking spectacular against the setting sun, so late afternoon may be the most aesthetic time to visit. I applaud the festival organizers for their extraordinary efforts in bringing back this community-centered winter tradition, and showcasing a unique aspect of Rockland County's history and heritage, as well as the talent and craftsmanship of local artists. I bought a signed monograph written by resident writer Spencer Hirsch which beautifully captures the spirit and poetry of that era. The ice sculptures should be up for as long as this Arctic weather allows, and the pavilion display may remain on view for the rest of the week, so even post-festival, Rockland Lake still makes for a picturesque if frigid outing if you're in the area.

Only thing that would've made the tour better would be to come back in Spring when the garden is in bloom.

It's a sweet and wholesome little festival featuring fiber arts (of course), vendors of mostly the crafts/wellness/artisanal persuasion, live music, diverse foods (including homemade food, drinks and sweets from the on-site Threefold Café), a silent auction and studio sale, and is very family-friendly with a cute petting zoo and craft activities for kids on the lawn. Did I mention how cute the petting zoo is?? We got to hold and stroke fluffy bunnies, fluffy alpacas, fluffy chicks & ducks, and other darling animals. Therapeutic cuteness overload! Definitely a highlight for the kiddo and me. The environs are relaxing and hippy dippy in a beautiful way. My child loves roaming around that campus and the community has some wonderful people who are artists, naturopaths, educators, farmers, craftsmen, and those who otherwise support living close to the ways of nature.
