My husband and I have lived in this building for 2 years and plan to continue living here for the foreseeable future. We love the place. Why? - The location. Within walking distance of nearly everything: lots of popular restaurants, many people's offices (including my own), hardware store, drug store, clothing stores, three grocery stores, etc. (Safeway and Whole Foods are both a 5-min walk away, Trader Joe's is a 15-min walk). The red line is very close (5 min walking) and the blue, orange, and silver lines are a 15-min walk, so you can easily take the Metro to Reagan Airport. - The management. Not only is Devin an excellent, understanding, and responsive manager, but every notice he posts in the elevators or mailroom is hilarious. He manages to make information about garbage disposals something people actually get a kick out of reading. Our friends who visit our apartment and see the notices think he's some kind of celebrity/comic genius. - The sound proofing. We can't hear anything from our neighbors. How is that possible?!? I thought noise complaints and hearing your neighbors play bad music at odd hours were inevitable annoyances of living in an apartment building, but Brunswick House has taught me otherwise. - The apartment itself. Plenty of space for a reasonable price (for the location). Dishwasher and disposal, good heating and AC, laundry in the basement. Very practical as long as you don't have kids and need a second bedroom. (I think the whole building is studios and one-bedroom units.) Don't get me wrong: it's not perfect. It's not glamorous like some of the newer buildings. And we've had a number of minor maintenance issues that have taken them a few tries to fix. But overall, we've very happy here. read more

I could not be happier. My 1-bedroom is quite spacious with a good layout, several closets, and lots of counter space in the kitchen. I really don't hear road noise at all, and I barely ever hear my neighbors. The building is older, and laundry is shared, but the laundry room is very convenient and I've never had any trouble getting a machine. The machines will even text you when your laundry is done! The location can't be beat. You can walk to Dupont Metro in 6-7 minutes as well as many restaurants, bars, a Whole Foods, a Safeway, and a Trader Joes (The TJs is a bit farther, but the many bus options can get you there in a jiffy, if that's your preferred store.) The real highlight of this building are the amazing staff who work here. I've never lived somewhere where the staff are so helpful. read more

Update: I've lived in Brunswick House almost 2 full years now. I stand by everything I wrote in month #5 (previous post). I have to add that, on certain fronts, it's actually better. We never hear our neighbors, and I've talked to them and know they can't hear me do music rehearsals in the apartment when my windows are closed (no matter how loudly). The sound insulation is unbelievable. Our building manager is the driving force for keeping this place free of problems---despite his having a stroke, and being hospitalized for a while, he bounced back and is running the place as well ever. Updating my review to confirm that the Brunswick House is still a great place to live. We sadly moved out (after 5 years!) because we needed a two bedroom, otherwise we would have stayed. The current property manager, Lora, is wonderful and very responsive. Any maintenance issues were quickly taken care of (only a few) and you can submit requests electronically now. I live here for almost 4 years and I love the place. The apartments are very nice with big windows and good light. The management is great! They are always there for whatever you might need, never more than a couple of hours to respond to any maintenance issue. Keith and Ulisses the guys in charge of maintenance are very nice and reachable and Devin the manager is awesome, he makes sure everything runs smoothly and that the neighbors are comfortable. I've lived here for 1.5 years. Management changed around 6 months ago, and I've become quite annoyed with how things are being run since then. You cannot count on a full 24 hours notice before maintenance staff enters the apartment for maintenance (not emergency) reasons. The new manager is less attentive and doesn't respond to tenant's emails in the way the old manager did. In addition, the maintenance staff chooses to do their work at the most inconvenient times - such as emptying the garbage bin on each floor at 6:30 in the morning. This is in addition to the garbage men making a ruckus outside around 7-7:30. Noise is probably my biggest complaint in this complex, and the biggest annoyance is that it is completely in control of the complex's manager and maintenance staff. You can tell that I'm frustrated... I will say however that you'll get your money's worth for the amount of square feet each apartment has. In addition, you won't have to deal with pests. I can't say if the pest condition will continue now that management has changed, but I can say that if you're a light sleeper this is not the place for you! read more

Having lived in the building for three decades I can say the management company is the best we have had. They hire good managers and are more willing to spend money to fix any building problems. Staff does a great job maintaining the inside and outside of the building. Being built over 50 years ago the building has solid walls and you almost never hear noise from neighbors apartments unless you are out in the hallway. Security has never been a serious problem but the management had cameras installed at entrance points and in the parking garage. The new building entrance key makes it impossible for someone to just make and pass out copies. The elevators were taken out and replaced with new elevators which eliminated any problems with them. The basement laundry room is kept clean and any problems with a washer or drier or quickly fixed once management is informed. I would say that one of the best test of a building if whether people would move back into it if they returned to the area and that seems to be a yes.. Partly due to location, cost, and that for an older building it is fairly well kept. Apartments - People moving into the building today are treated to apartments that have been upgraded including new appliances in the past five years or so. This includes upgrading the bathrooms as well as the kitchens. For the neighborhood they are considered to be among the most spacious for the price. Someone mention mice but that is not a serious problem but is partly due to all the construction in the areas. The building across the street has units running over $850,000 and has the same minor problem. You are allowed two cats if mice is a concern but I have only seen two mice in 30 years. There is an option of two different cable companies. (I recommend RCN which is fiber optic and which has few problems. Bus are not a problem as management has an exterminator come each month and work on a different floor. As a reviewer mention, there have been problems with leaking pipes and the management company has been replacing them in all eight floors of a tier if they are really bad. There are some problems with leaks that cause the wooden tile floors to bucket due to the air condition/heating convectors. This is due partly to the air conditioners use in summer where trays to catch watch overflow if there is air trapped in the pipe. Management has started doing check mid summer to see if they need to blow out the pipe to avoid that problem. read more

For any young professional that wants to live and work in D.C. proper, there is no better place than the Brunswick House. I re-located to D.C. from Tampa, FL for a work position two years ago. After touring endless apartments that were undersized and overbudget, I stumbled across Brunswick House on 17th just blocks away from my office. Don't let the outside fool you; the apartments are spotless, beautiful hardwood floors, vaulted ceilings and quiet, easy living make this THE best selection for any young professional (or long-term couples without children) an ideal place to live. The location is absolutely perfect. Blocks off of Dupont Circle, right on P street with direct access to 14th street corridor for restaurants, bars and dining, as well as a 15 minute walk to any major neighborhood in NW D.C. The immediate neighborhood itself is gorgeous, and right on 17th you have EVERYTHING you need to sustain a living - CVS, SafeWay, hardware store, liquor/wine store, and countless delicious restaurants and bars. I'm telling you this is the hidden gem of D.C. apartment living. Devin Pharr is the building manager and by FAR (no pun intended) the best building manager I've ever had in my rental history. He is kind, unbelievably patient, and makes the move-in, residential and move-out process a breeze. Anything you need, he's there for you. There was a time on a Sunday evening I was locked out of my apartment, and he got in his car to drive over to the building before the maintenance worker bailed me out. Many building managers say they would do that to get you to sign a lease, but not many would follow through. Devin always did regarding promises he made to me as a resident. The building is older but has charm. Not a single issue was wrong in my unit in the 2 years I lived there. The building staff is friendly and my neighbors (with the exception of one) were all really nice, quiet and completely understanding of different lifestyles. I cannot stress enough how perfect this place is. You can't beat the location and the price is right. I recently moved to Texas, but if I stayed in D.C. I wouldn't have any reason to leave the Brunswick House. read more

My husband, our son and I have been living at Brunswick House for almost 3 years. I love it! Our one-bedroom apartment is very large with big windows and lots of closet space. The management is amazing. And so are the neighbors. It really feels like a home despite being a large apartment building. The rooftop is a great place for sunset drinks and dinners and also for growing vegetables for those with green fingers. It's close to multiple supermarkets, CVS, restaurants, and coffee shops. And for those with young children, it is in one of the best school districts in DC. Highly recommend it! read more

Great location, apartment layout and prices and great on-site management and staff. When neighbors have been noisy or hammering, manager has spoken to them and it is quiet again. Been a resident for about eight months and I have only good things to say about Brunswick House. The highlight is definitely Devin, our amazing, responsive, hilarious, and very friendly building manager. The whole crew is fantastic. It's definitely a no-frills, older building (as such, a couple of maintenance issues every once in a while, no pool, fitness center, etc) but there's a very nice roof! One of the best locations in Dupont. Five min walk to the Dupont metro stop, 3-4 minute walk to the 16th street S busses, the G2 bus stops right outside, around the corner from SAIS, within 2-3 blocks of Safeway and Whole Foods (there's also a hardware store, CVS, and tons of bars and restaurants literally right outside the door!). You can easily walk to Logan Circle, U St, Foggy Bottom, Farragut, etc. Basically - you cannot pick a better location in which to live. Space wise, you get quite a lot for what you're paying for. And for the area, prices are quite reasonable (I looked at A LOT of places before choosing BH). I have a studio (no W/D in unit, or dishwasher, but it's not a huge deal). HUGE walk-in closet. Utilities are included which is very nice. Laundry is in a shared-facility downstairs; annoying but you'll get used to it. Never had a problem getting a machine. All in all, you can't get much better than this! read more

I've been at Brunswick House for about 6 months and have really enjoyed living here. This is the quietest apartment building I've lived in - I never hear my neighbors when I'm in my apartment, and even with a unit that overlooks 17th Street, I don't find it gets too noisy. The management of the building is great - everyone is super friendly and runs the building very efficiently. I've never really had a serious problem with anything in my unit, but when my shower drain was clogged, they got someone up to fix it within the same day. Regarding pests, I've never seen any bugs or mice around, so no complaints there. This is a great location, and even in one of the smaller studio units, I find I have a lot of storage and space. We have lived at the Brunswick House for nearly 3-4 years now and love it. The building is conveniently located at 17th and P St NW in the heart of Dupont Circle, walkable to the G, S and N bus lines (among others), the Dupont Circle metro station (10 min walk), CVS, Whole Foods, Safeway, Trader Joe's, and many delightful restaurants. There is also a gated parking lot in the building if you drive (for a monthly rental rate in line with area pricing) and a bike rack in the basement if you bike. When something needs to be repaired or replaced, you simply submit an online request and the maintenance staff is impressively speedy about fixing the issue. The staff is also consistently friendly and helpful. Since living there, we have had a new dishwasher and new toilet seat installed as well as our bathtub repainted. There is a package hub in the basement where your packages are placed in locking compartments and released by a passcode that is emailed and texted to you. There are on-site laundry facilities, including PressBox dry cleaning services. Provided that space is available, you can rent storage space in the basement for a modest fee. Our one-bedroom apartment has plenty of natural light, a decent kitchen with good working appliances, hard wood flooring, and utilities are included (yay!). Up to two cats per apartment are welcome. All in all, it's a great place to live right in the heart of DC. read more

When I found myself in the market for a studio a few years ago, a friend referred me to the WCSmith family, and I am so glad she did. Brunswick House has been a fantastic home for the past 1.5 years. Location wise, it is fantastic; it is walking distance to Logan, Dupont, Adams Morgan, Farragut, and so much more. Considering the location, the building itself is very quiet, and I am rarely disturbed by any noise. I can speak to the studio apartments, which have a lovely, open layout, so you can really lay it out however you want. There are 3 closets, one of which is a walk-through-which is far more closet space than I could have ever imagined in a studio. They recently added storage space for a monthly fee in the basement too, which is a nice amenity. The apartments have lovely wood floors, which have been well maintained. The fixtures in my bathroom were updated right before I moved in. The kitchen cabinets have been updated recently-ish too. The management is really what makes this building such a wonderful place to live. They really take care of the inside and outside. Requests for assistance or maintenance are dealt with promptly. They are incredibly courteous and professional, but still go out of their way to organize opportunities for residents of the building to meet each other. I plan to live here for as long as I can! read more

The Brunswick House is the place to live. I have lived here for over 5 years and I have zero complaints. Although the building does not have all the amenities that some of the newer buildings have it should not be a show stopper, because of its location. You have everything you need within a couple blocks, to include access to the Metro and numerous bus stops. If the location is not enough, the cleanliness and responsiveness of Brunswick House management is topnotch! In over 5 years I have yet to see a bug in my apartment and if something breaks, it is fixed the same day it is reported. Devin and his team are tenant focused and it shows in their desire to make the Brunswick House the best place to live in NW DC. read more

Great place to live. Devin and the whole team provides amazing service in everything they do: whether you have a question about the neighborhood, your A/C unit, a maintenance problem, or anything else, they are really great in this building. We just moved out (but only because we bough a place and Brunswick House is rental only) but we really miss it there. It's a great location (Safeway, CVS, Whole Foods, Metro Lines, restaurants, bars, etc...) and the place itself is great. You can get RCN for your internet provider, which is so much better than Verizon or Comcast. Many, many advantages to renting here. And for everything you get and the location, the rent is very reasonable. Overall a great place! read more

I lived in Brunswick House for just over two years and absolutely loved it. I was very sad to leave. Here are a few of the great things: 1. The cost for the square footage is the best you will get this close to Dupont Circle and the metro. 2. Such a cute neighborhood - there is a whole foods and safeway (both 3 blocks away) and tons of cute restaurants that are must-go-to places! 3. Because its not on a huge avenue (like Connecticut or 16th), it is pretty quiet. I was on the 2nd floor overlooking 17th ST and never heard a lot of street noise or people late at night. 4. The staff is amazing! If I ever had a problem, I could email the manager, Devin, while I was at work and the problem would be fixed by the time I got home. 5. The building is always clean! I never had any bugs in my apartment which is not always a guarantee with apartment living. 6. The A/C (while not central air) worked so well. This was a concern I had moving in, but I was able to make the apartment as cold (or hot, I guess) as I wanted. 7. Its safe. The building has surveillance video but I never felt unsafe or that it was needed. 8. If you have a car and are lucky enough to get one of the highly coveted spaces, it is cheap parking and also so easy to have parking in the building! (Though space is limited). 9. Rent does not go up by crazy amounts each year. My first year in the building my rent went up less than 5%? The second year it did not go up at all. Honestly, had no complaints living here and would not hesitate to live here again if I moved back to DC. read more

I've lived at Brunswick House for a number of years and have even moved within the building if that tells you anything about how much I like living here. It is centrally located, spacious, reasonably priced, and within walking distance of the grocery store(s)--there is the Safeway, the Whole Foods, and now even a Trader Joe's. You can also walk to the CVS (which is right across the street), restaurants, bars, and some of DC's key tourist attractions like the White House and the Washington Monument. For me, it is even within walking distance of my office. The Dupont Circle metro station is about a 7 minute walk away and there the buses on 16th Street that take you downtown as well. Brunswick House is an older building, but management undertook renovations a few years ago which have included replacing the elevators, the hallway carpeting and updating the motif as well as the appliances in the kitchen cabinets in the units. The studios do not have dishwashers but I understand the 1 bedrooms do. Laundry facilities are also on site and there is access to a rooftop deck. The building manager Devin Pharr does a fantastic job responding to maintenance requests promptly and goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure your needs are taken care of including getting you back into your unit when you have been locked out even though you have your key and recycling your newspaper that has been delivered when you've gone out town and have forgotten to put in a vacations stop. He also organizes community events to facilitate interaction among tenants as well as donation drives to local charities which comes in very handy and facilitates spring cleaning. read more
