Charge my positive review to the fact that I rushed out of the salon to beat traffic and never looked at the back of my head. I requested a trim and ended up with a lob (long bob). The front was still super silky and long. Mind you, she said I had 1/2" - 1" of hair to trim "not much at all" in her words. When I got home, my husband asked me why I decided to get my hair cut. Of course I thought he was exaggerating until he brought me a mirror. I was so surprised!! Shocked! Upset! Mind you, I've cut 6"+ of hair (big chops) 3 times so I'm not the kind of girl that cries over cutting a few inches of hair! This CUT was sooo noticeable that the following day, my coworkers all complimented my hairCUT. I'm a black woman, we don't call it a haircut unless it's a HAIR. CUT!!! Not the business! She did a great job treating, moisturizing and flat ironing my hair, however I NEVER went back and won't go back! I had a great experience at Bryan Joseph Salon, my stylist was Tabitha. From the start when I called her to make an appointment, she kept and honored it. When I walked in she was ready for me, she had a smile introduced herself and was very pleasant. She shampooed my hair perfectly, trimmed, colored and did an amazing silk press. We even talked about my hair and how I should care for my hair. Usually, when I get a blow out or a silk press by other stylist my curls drop within an hour later and my hair begins to frizz up. However, I went home pulled my hair into a ponytail (being lazy) for 2 days, pulled my hair down on the third day and I still have curls. Girl, I was shooked! The Salon was easy to find, well kept and the other stylist were professional and remained busy. read more

Although Bryan Joseph Salon also caters to traditional relaxed clients, there are at least two stylists in the salon who can work with your natural kinks, coils, and curls! I'm told that one stylist (whose name I forget, but she's from Detroit originally, IIRCC) is great for heat-based natural styles. And Tabitha, the stylist I have had, is great for twists and other heat-free natural hair styling. I have had two appointments with Tabitha, and overall I was pleased with the experience. Both times I got my natural hair twisted into a up-do style, and both times my hair looked phenomenal and lasted far longer than my twist styles typically do. Tabitha herself is personable and friendly. I also like the salon is clean and relaxing, and that street parking is usually available and easy to find in front of the salon. The only reason I have to shave off a star is because appointment times take far too long because Tabitha works on two clients at one time. It's been 15+ years since I've gotten a relaxer, so I'm completely out of the habit of being in a salon for hours and hours at a time. Every natural hair salon I've ever frequented books one client at a time, staggers appointment times to accommodate the full length of an expected service, and then has you in and out within 90 minutes start to finish. However during both of my visits to Bryan Joseph, when I arrived for my appointment time, Tabitha was still actively working on her previous client. That resulted in me having to wait around for quite a while (and in one case, more than an hour) after my appointment was to begin before I could even be shampooed (since she does her own shampooing and doesn't use a shampoo girl). After the wash, I would sit under the dryer for a deep conditioning while she finished the previous client. All totaled, my appointments for a simple twist up-do took anywhere from 3 - 4 hours, which I simply cannot sustain on a regular basis given my long work hours and extremely limited free time. If it weren't for the lengthy appointments, I would make this my new go-to salon in the area. But for now, I will have to limit my visits to special occasions only. read more

I love coming to this salon! My stylist is Tabitha. She's been doing my hair for almost 2 years. Since day one she has taken great care of me. When I first came to her I was in the process of going natural without the big chop. My hair was damaged badly and I was afraid I was going to end up with some sort of bowl cut lol. Tabitha is a magician because she was able to work with what I had and gave me a really nice hairstyle. Her silk presses are A++! I come to her every 2-3 months. I usually wear my hair in a protective style and I come to her when I take it out. If it's the summer/spring time she trims my ends and does a protein treatment to help my hair stay healthy. In the fall/winter I get a trim, protein treatment, and silk press. My hair has grown significantly since I've let her do it! It's also thicker. If you want your hair a certain way she will achieve that look for you. Tabitha is very friendly and punctual. We always have great conversations. They have tea, coffee, and water at this salon. Visited Serena and received a mediocre sew-in. Her braiding was loose and bulky with excessive leave out and braids pulled too far up from the nape of my neck. Furthermore, she attempted absolutely no styling to my extensions once installed. All of this for an inflated price that was twice as much as the going rate and $50 more than what she originally quoted me. What makes it worse, is she has a very unprofessional attitude. Any request I made was met with confrontation and rudeness. I asked to fix part of the sew-in I was not happy with and she refused. I came to this salon and stylist because I thought I would experience more class, etiquette and professionalism than at other locations. That was not the case. read more

This was first time using this hair salon. I was attending a gala that evening and wanted to have my hair styled. The customer service was excellent! They offer hot tea, hot coffee, water and fresh slices of cake. My stylist, Serena did an amazing job for a great price. The stylist: Gwen was my stylist and fried, dyed, and laid my hair to the side! Well, not really dyed or fried for that matter, but she really did a great job! Our appointment was early in the morning and she began right away. She gave me a protein treatment, asked me questions about my hair, and shampooed and conditioned. I could tell she cared and knew her stuff. Her assistant was very nice as well. After, she took her time to hot comb my edges, and laid my hair with her flat iron. I got a silk press and my hair is SOOOOO bouncy and has a natural sheen. Thanks Ms. Gwen!! The shop: The shop was clean and inviting. Not too loud or "gossipy", just the right amount of shade and entertainment, lol. They have coffee and a small selection of cookies. Also, there is a small, one-seat eating table in the back. This is my absolute favorite hair salon in DC. I haven't lived in DC in a few years but I used to visit Serena for my natural hair. She is amazing at natural hair care and styling. My hair was the healthiest and longest during the time period that I frequented this salon. I am in DC this weekend for a wedding and I'm currently sitting under the dryer as I write this review. Gwen is my stylist today and I know she will be just as fabulous. My appointment started on time (always does), my wash felt heavenly, and now I'm sipping some tea (nice tea/coffee machine here) while having coffee cake. It's a really nice salon and I'm having such a great experience already and my hair isn't even done, yet! First let me start off by saying that this was my First experience with the salon and I love how my hair turned out. I went to Serena and she did a great job. The way she washes hair, using a detangling brush, is simply amazing. She was a little distracted and on her phone throughout my entire appointment which bothered me a little. But all in all, her skills are great. The salon is small but nice. The atmosphere is cool. However, customer service is lacking. When I walked in, no one greeted me. Being a first time client, it's a little off putting not knowing who to talk with or check in with. I am used to salons having a receptionist and this place does not. After a few seconds go by, Serena speaks up and say you must be Tiffany. To which I reply yes and the appointment got started. I felt it was weird that as you walk in to this small salon, who had 3 stylist all staring at you upon entry, that no one said hello how are you, how can I help you. But not such a big deal. Serena made very little small talk. It didn't seem like she was interested in building a relationship which is fine. Again, she was mostly on her phone. I doubt I'll be a regular but I may come back if I have no other options. Although the work is great, the service is off putting compared to the service I've received at other salons. Especially considering that I paid around $125 for a trim, wash, blow dry, and silk press. I don't mind paying. You get what you paid for, and I think she did a great job but I rather go somewhere that makes he overall experience a good one for that type of money. read more

I had almost given up on remaining natural before I met her, but her protective styling (no extensions) has grown my hair significantly in just a matter of months. One day while at work I started venting to my co-worker about my most recent hair issue. I had called a stylist/owner of a salon and requested an appointment for a flat twist updo and trim. I was told they had no availability for a month. That was just absurd to me. A month?!?!? Well my co-worker told me about her sister, Tabitha, who was a stylist at Bryan Joseph Salon. from California where we pride "hair" it was very difficult for me to find someone that does natural hair (press & curl). I saw a lady on the metro bus one day and I had to ask her where she got her hair done and she gave me Gwen's card. I was so nervous when I went the first time because when you mention "press" people don't understand what you are talking about. Everyone straightens hair with a flat iron and that's not a real straighten technique to me, "to straight is to press", when Gwen was done with my hair, talk about "body", it looked as if I left the dominicans hair salon and my scalp wasn't even on fire (dominican's burn your hair and scalp). She is the best on the East Coast. Although I can do my own hair, I can't do as good of a job as Gwen does, and that brush technique she has is the bomb! It's good but seriously over priced unfortunately - cost about $65 just for a wash and set which is a bit much.

Unfortunately, I can't echo the same positive experience that others have had with Serena. I scheduled an appointment for a wash, blowdry, and trim with her over the phone at 8AM, which she originally stated was $45. I arrived at the salon the next day about 5 minutes after 8AM to find she was not there. At about 8:30 the other stylist in the salon offered to call her to find out what was going on. It turned out that Serena thought she scheduled me the following day in the afternoon. I'm not sure how that was mixed up when we spoke directly over the phone and confirmed the day and time more than once. After waking up at 6:30AM to be on the train by 7 so that I could be on time for my appointment, I was extremely annoyed at this point. The other stylist offered to wash my hair while I waited on Serena which I agreed to. I asked for a deep condition as well since I clearly had time to kill and my hair had been on the dryer side with the weather conditions. Serena finally makes it to the salon and doesn't make a point to apologize in person. I try to carry on with the appointment despite this, so that I could get out and make it to work. Mind you I had to call in to notify my job I would be running late at this point. My hair was blown out on low heat which I asked for and was very happy about. At the conclusion of my appointment Serena says my services will be $75. I explained that this wasn't what she quoted on the phone and her tone immediately changed invoking attitude. She said it was an additional $25 for the deep condition and $5 because I asked if she could do a quick crown braid on my hair before I head to work. I understand the deep condition charge, however given her mischeduling my appointment and then being an hour late, I expected some type of price adjustment/compensation. I told her this, and she simply shook her head and put her hand out for my card. If you made a mistake in scheduling I can somewhat understand that, but as a professional you should take into account the travel time, and time off from work that a client took to book services with you. At minimum be apologetic in person and don't get an attitude with the client! At most, offer a price adjustment for the negligence and INCONVENIENCE so that the client will maintain business with you and not assume that this is a regular thing. Thank you to the other stylist in the shop whose name fails me at the moment. She was kind from the minute I walked through the door, offered me coffee/tea, showed me where I could hang my coat, and offered to call Serena when she noticed I had been waiting over 30 minutes. She basically picked up all the slack and made up for everything Serena lacked. If I could go back to that stylist in a different shop, I would but unfortunately I won't be back here. read more

ok, so this is where my "old hairdresser" is located (see my Salon Revive review). she's fabulous! too bad she double books and always runs over, but when she gets to you, SHE NEVER RUSHES and i never feel rushed, so it's all good. my hair always looks amazing when i leave there. i always make sure she puts my relaxer (versus The Helper or The Assistant or The Shampoo girl) - why pay all that money and have someone else do it? no way. i used get a wash and blowdry (for like 7 years!), but i'm going to try wash and set next time i go. i'll let you know how it is. the atmosphere is not gorgeous, but it's nice. the owner is the sweetest guy ever. nice selection of magazines. esay street parking in that area. wish it wasn't so far from me though. i hate making my way zigzagging through georgia avenue...[sigh]... read more

I am new to the DC area and I have been searching for a stylist that was familiar with the CHI keratin process which I have had for 8 years. I finally found the right stylist!! Gwen was excellent! I have tried 3 stylist in the area that claim to be "certified," however I would have to come home after my visit and restyle my hair or just wear a ponytail. Consequently, I have been traveling back to Florida every 3 months to see my stylist of 8 years to touch up my CHI. Okay, so I've been going to TABITHA WALKER since I was in the 1st grade and now I am in the 12th. Tab is the best stylist I know and she is the only one I trust to ever do my hair. No matter where I go in the world whenever I need to pamper or nurter myself, I can call Tabitha for an appointment on my way in town and she gladly accomodates my needs at that moment. I really wanted to like this salon, but my experience was far from memorable in a good way. To begin, customer service was not good at all. I came to the shop 10 mins before my appt and when I walked through the doors 4 stylists were there and not one even the Bryan Joseph himself welcomed me in. Red flag one. Next as I said I came 10 mins before, but my stylist was late... Red flag two. One of my biggest issues was that my stylist made no attempt to get to know me, chat, or build a small friendship/connection that would make me feel like I should come back. She said two sentences to me and that was it. Now, my hair did look acceptable but for a shampoo, blow dry, silk press and trim, $115 is not talking my language. She also charged me $5 extra for the trim even though she had stated it was $25 which again is ridiculous because it's a trim. Lastly, I paid and walked out to have no one say thank you, come again, nothing again! What makes it even worse is my hair lasted straight for a good 5 hours and it was back to an Afro! Relocating to D.C. from Atlanta has been hard on my hair. The water had it broken off and I could not find a decent and reasonably priced hair dresser that would accommodate my schedule. I am so disappointed and saddened by the experience I had with Serena Hampton, to have her help me with a WEDDING hairstyle. When I first emailed her, I inquired about her rates. She stated that updos start at $100 and clip-ins are $40. When I finished my trial, the bill totaled $200. That's not all though because the horror continues... The red flags all started with the initial bridal consultation I scheduled with Serena. I took off 3 hours of work that day to meet her at the salon. Not only was she in the middle of doing a client's hair when I arrived, but she did not attend to me until precisely 26 minutes later. Once she attended to me, the "consultation" lasted 7 minutes. I found myself trying to ask more questions to get my time's worth for the time it took to get there. All she asked me to do was show her pictures of the hairstyle I wanted and asked when I was available to come in for a trial. With the horrendous amount of traffic this metropolitan area gets, she could have spared me the drive by having me email her the pictures and talk over the phone -- that was a complete waste of my time. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and proceeded to schedule an appointment still. On the day of the trial, I arrived with two packs of textured hair extensions and clip-ins so that Serena could install and customize them the way she wanted. She agreed to install them for me but did not inform me that she would charge more than the initial $40 she quoted me! Little did I know that she would charge me $84 to install them AND $15 to attach them to my hair on top of the $100 for the updo that was not even an updo. I felt so manipulated and what could I do, after all she did provide a service. Now the execution of my desired hairstyle was the most disappointing aspect of my experience. If she could nail the simple hairstyle, I wouldn't have cared about paying her top dollar. When she looked at the photos of the hairstyles I wanted during the consultation, I emphasized that I wanted waves, not curls. Once she completed her attempt at the hairstyle, I told her that my hair had curls and was not wavy enough. She said, "well I forgot my curling wand at home so this is the best it will get." As a professional hairstylist, you should always HAVE ALL of your styling tools daily, especially when you have a bridal hair trial. She was not prepared and still I had to pay $60 more than what I budgeted. I then asked her how much it would be on the day of the wedding and she said $190 even through the clip-ins were already installed. For those who are naturals and appreciate coarse hair, the hair I brought was textured to match mine. I just wanted length. Serena straightened my hair to be silky straight. It totally went against my wishes and defeated the purpose of me buying that texture. Also, by the time I got back home ALL of the curls had completely dropped. So that meant that within an hour of my wedding, the waves (that I wished for) would be gone. After I emailed her about my disappointment she offered a free hair press. When time got close to my wedding which fell on a Friday, she told me, "Since you are getting a complimentary service, you can only schedule your appointment from Mon-Wednesday." Again, played me. I then asked her to give me an exception because she blew my hair budget out of the window and she said, "I'm going out of town from the Feb. 27- March 1. So that's not an option. You told me you couldn't utilize my services so I made other plans for the dates. I was trying to accommodate you. Either way I won't be here on Friday." After all of this, she used my images on her Instagram and made a blogpost to market her services with unauthorized photos of me."
