Talk about mixed use space! Sense is a hair salon, art gallery, event space, and apothecary all rolled into one! In a few sentences, this is a space dedicated to making you feel good about yourself. The downstairs apothecary is filled with herbs, tinctures and crystals to help you with any ailment. You can also book appointments for Akashic readings or with a reiki master in their well appointed healing rooms. Upstairs, there's a simple and beautiful space for styling but at night you can find a variety of health and wellness classes to appeal to any age or background. I recently attended a class here with Woo Woo Company and was so excited to be able to meet like minded people in such a welcoming space. I only wish I had more time to explore the apothecary downstairs but it's probably a good thing because I could see myself dropping dollars there! read more

I've been going to Erin for years, and was SO excited when she opened Sense. There is no one that can do balayage quite like her, and I feel compelled to write this review as I'm in a coffee shop right now and someone just asked who does my hair color! I have medium brown hair to begin with, and Erin gives me a sunny golden balayage that grows out incredibly well. Given that I heat style my hair almost every day for work (ugh), I'm always amazed at how healthy she keeps it. Her new salon is such a gorgeous space and I love that she has other stylists come collaborate, like Marisa who flies in from LA to do cuts. I now get my hair cut by Marisa, and am obsessed with how she does it. She cuts the bottom very blunt which helps it look thicker, and then adds layers and texture for volume. My hair dries amazing when I let it air dry, which never used to happen! There's also a new art gallery upstairs and a healing space. I haven't tried that yet but it's definitely on my list. It's a gem in DC and I love supporting a women owned business! read more

I've been seeing Erin for color (base + dimensional highlights) for several years now, and I would follow her anywhere -- even if she was in an otherwise inconvenient neighborhood and working out of a paper box. Thankfully for me, Sense is less than a 10 minute walk from the Columbia Heights metro stop/my house and is a beautiful, calm setting for some self-care! My color was great, as usual, and I got a beautiful first-time cut with Mimi, who instantly understood what I was looking for and helped to give me an easy-to-maintain cut for my sometimes-straight, sometimes-curly hair. It was really easy to make an appointment for first thing in the morning, which is convenient for my work schedule, and it's also easy to pay via credit card (and tip via Venmo if you don't have cash). I love the warm, friendly and professional atmosphere that this team of women has developed, and I can't wait to see how their business continues to grow. I have been coming to Sense for years for haircuts and color services, and have always had an amazing experience. When I found out they were offering microblading I was so excited! I scheduled an appointment immediately and cannot recommend this service enough. Chloe was so wonderful throughout the experience, talking me through each step and spending a lot of time on the consultation portion of the appointment to make sure she knew what my vision was. Got a haircut with Sam W. A few weeks ago. He is new to the salon but he was AMAZING. Like many people, My hair was scraggly and this haircut was well overdue. He gave me a fabulous cut and listened to exactly what I wanted. Since I saw Sam my hair has been so much easier to wear naturally and style. Not only was he a great stylist, he was friendly and not overly chatty! I was a little anxious about sitting in a mask for the whole process but once we got started I totally forgot about it. Sense seems to be taking COVID very seriously which I really appreciated. There were very few people in the salon and a generous amount of distance for those that were there. I heard about Sense through my extensive digging to find the best colorist and cut in DC...I've been here for six years, and as a balayage lover with really thick hair, I've tried many different places in the hunt for the best cut and color. There hasn't been a single place that compares to Sense. My hair was hand painted by Erin, a literal angel, with hi and low lights to frame my face and make my bright colors pop and the dark tones give dimension. I didn't think it could get better, but then because of Leigh, it did. She took my thick, long, unruly mane and crafted it into a light, beautiful, face-framing shape. I kept saying, "I feel like my hair belongs to an Instagram model, but it's on my head?!?" Literal magic. I will never, ever, ever go anywhere else in the DC area. Leigh has been cutting my hair for more than 5 years now, and I can't recommend her highly enough. When she moved to Sense I knew I had to follow, and even though I travel from Arlington, it's worth it. I have really thick hair and even other "top" stylists in the area wouldn't always dry it all the way. Leigh is the first person in DC who styled it perfectly. When she left her last salon they tried to tempt me with a free haircut, but honestly starting over with someone new just isn't worth it. I absolutely love every cut I get and trust her 100 percent no matter what style I want to try. I also love the Sense team and their cute little studio. Lacy gave me the best haircut ever. She fixed up my grown out quarantine bob (that was beginning to resemble a mullet) and gave me great subtle highlights to add some dimension. 11/10 recommend. I went into Sense post-quarantine-shutdown, and felt very safe. All of the staff was sanitizing between clients and everyone in the salon was spread out and masked. This was my first time at Sense and I will be back as soon as I need another Trim from Lacey. Lacy is awesome!!! I came here after they reopened. COVID 19 made me nervous to come, but they did a very good job about it. Everyone wear mask, and they are very careful about it. They clean and wipe all the time. My hairstylist is Lacy. It is my first time cutting my hair with her. She's very sweet and genuine and of course! She's very good at her job. I went for cool, ash blonde highlights and ended up with warm, reddish/brass/orange yellow overall color. They whisked me through their shop machine - Erin never even checked, not once!! my hair color/bleach's development. She just lathered on bleach (base for 'painting') - told her Asst a number, and after a timer went off, wo checking the development from warm to cool, just dunked me under the sink, added color toner/glaze - then washed it out, again. Erin did not take a single peek at this process at all. I realize this method allows clients to be packed, back to back - but I don't want that experience. I get the sense that some IMB followers aka loyal clients get royal treatment here - but as a newcomer, I was sorely diasspointed with the *results.* ***For Xmas/NYE 2020 no less! *** Now, I don't even like how I look, forget love. I specified 'cool - no matter what, and *no warm* bc there is red in my face' - that was the *minimum* req for my skin tone. The color kind of washes me out, makes me look older! (not younger) - and some people don't quite recognize me. (!) Brassy, someone recently said recently... Erin then said she could fix it the following Wed (this was on a Friday) but I was leaving Monday. Trust me when I say: I wanted to love love love and rave about this place and experience. Best hair salon in DC! I was impressed with this place in every way. My appointment was extremely punctual from start to finish, but somehow it also seemed like a really relaxing experience, where I was gabbing with a friend the whole time. Mimi cut my hair and she is clearly really knowledgeable and passionate about hair; she knew exactly how to cut it to make it flattering but also what I wanted, and gave me really helpful but easy tips to bring my at-home blowouts to a salon level. I've been getting my hair colored by Erin for over four years now, so when I heard she had left Immortal Beloved, I naturally freaked out. Thankfully, she didn't go far. I've been to Sense twice since then and have had a great experience both times. Erin's color is always on point, even when I have a hard time articulating exactly what I want. She has an instinct for it and just seems to know. Plus, she's a great conversationalist and always makes me feel at home. Erin has been doing my hair for about two years and Lexie has been cutting my hair for about 6-8 months. I followed Erin from her last salon and was thrilled when she opened Sense. With Erin and Lexie (and literally all the staff at the salon) in my corner, my hair has never looked better. I am extremely selective about who touches my hair. It's curly, fine, medium brown with highlights; shoulder length and growing. I've had hair of all lengths and my whole life, I've never found a cut and color that really works for me without a lot of fuss or prep. I'm 48, and it's finally looking the way I want! i hadn't worked with any of the stylists/colorists at sense prior to coming here, although i had heard plenty of good things about them! i came in to see mimi for a haircut and i'm thrilled with the cut + how she styled it. i'm in the process of growing out my bangs for the millionth time, which usually makes for a miserable few months, but mimi took some weight out of them, reshaped them a bit and my hair looks like a million bucks. erin and mimi are so friendly and the salon has a warm, cozy feel to it. it's also decorated beautifully and i love that it's a smaller space. i've already recommended it to friends + fam and i will continue to do so. thank you for the great hair! i can't wait to come back :-) read more

I would have followed her anywhere for her talent and attention to detail, but Sense exceeded my expectations. It is welcoming, aesthetically lovely, and has a great vibe. I started going to Leigh over four years ago after a disasterous haircut (at another salon) that needed to be fixed ASAP, so when she moved to Sense I obviously had to follow her. Since then, I have sent a number of other friends to Leigh, and they have all loved her. Over the years, I have lobbed my hair, let it grow long, and tried a few different styles in between. I generally hate to do my hair in the morning, so I appreciate that Leigh cuts and styles my hair in a way that requires minimal fuss. As for the salon, I loved it when I first went last week. Erin did a glaze on my hair before the cut, which looked great. The place could not be more welcoming -- I'm excited to come back. read more
