My Wife was out for the day, and when she returned, shortly after, we headed out to Bubba's Smokehouse. Bubba's Smokehouse has been recommended to us by several people, and we Love BBQ. Arrived and there were not many cars in the parking lot. As the reviews say, it doesn't look like much on the outside, but the food is really good. I think it looks very quaint on the outside, but inside looks like it was thrown together. Just inside the door is a pile of busted-up cardboard boxes lying on the floor. The place across the street is "Ban Moon", a Lao & Thai Restaurant, which has also been recommended for us to try. Their parking lot is full. Putting Ban Moon on the list. Bubba's Smokehouse dining room is filled with small tables and chairs, not much of anything else. There is a large cooler with lots of Brisket ready to be seasoned and smoked, along with large containers of Potato Salad and even larger containers of their Beans - and lots of containers of Pickles. Nice. They do have a loaf of white bread at each table for you to use at will, along with a roll of paper towels. The menu board is above the small counter where you order. My Wife went with the Brisket Sandwich with one side and chose Cole Slaw. I ordered their 2-meat plate, Brisket and Chicken. I asked if they had Moist Brisket, and the lady taking our order paused and said, well, the brisket is, well, moist. This also comes with 2 sides. I chose Beans and Cole Slaw. We also ordered 2 drinks, Diet Cokes. Orders are in, and we grabbed a table, which was easy because no one was sitting down. The aroma from the kitchen is filling the room, and it smells good. I grabbed a couple of containers of Pickles and White Onion pieces, and some silverware. Wasn't long before our food arrived in take-out containers, which is the best way to serve food at a BBQ place - no mess. My Wife's 'Moist' Brisket Sandwich has a lot of sliced Brisket piled up high, more than the other BBQ places around here, and a small container of Cole Slaw. My 2 Meat Plate has a Very Large Chicken Leg & Thigh with 2 slices of 'Moist' Brisket under. Speaking of Moist, I don't think these employees here know what Moist Brisket is because the Brisket we received is sliced regular Brisket. I first tried the Cole Slaw, and it is good. Love the juiciness and the fresh crunch. My Wife also liked the Cole Slaw. The Beans are a little dry and not much flavor until you get down to the juice in the bottom of the small container. My Large Chicken Leg and Thigh are just about lukewarm, with the leg being on the cold side. There is nothing wrong with eating cold chicken, but it's not what you want when you go out to eat. It's nicely seasoned and is Very Meaty - I like that. The Chicken itself is on the dry side, but I like the seasoning of the skin. The "Moist" Brisket is also dry because it's not a Moist Brisket, and a little tough, not tender at all, and it lacks any flavor. They do have 3 sauces for you at the table with a bottle of store-bought hot sauce. One sauce is Regular, and it's okay in flavor. The next one up is, I think, Spicy Sauce (the markings are wearing off), and it's not much different than the regular sauce. The sauce marked 'Hot' is on the mild side, but overall, they are all pretty good and provide added flavor to a not-so-flavorful brisket. I didn't try the store-bought hot sauce. The Pickles are delicious, with a nice crunch, and the white onion has very little onion heat to them, but they also have a nice crunch. The best I can say is that we tried Bubba's Smokehouse, but I doubt we will return. The best thing on our plates was the Cole Slaw, but my Wife did enjoy her sliced Brisket Sandwich, and she tried all of their sauces, regular, spicy, and hot. I ate one of the slices of Brisket along with a few bites of Chicken. The rest I'm taking home to see what I can do to improve what I can. Bubba's Smokehouse is not what we expected, especially since it has been recommended to us several times. We have yet to find a really good BBQ place in San Angelo, but we will stick to the one we usually attend until we do. Wherever we go out to eat, we always have fun and enjoy the outing. A quaint little spot located behind Ban Moon discovered by accident, walking into this restaurant took me back to the days of backwoods Alabama 24 hour smoked bar b que, I have been kind of hesitant to try BBQ here in Texas since I found out that most locations don't carry sweet BBQ beans, but have Pinto beans instead. My daughter, granddaughter and I decided to stop in and check it out. We ordered a pulled pork sandwich, a half pound Brisket, a side of potato salad, chips and 3 drinks. The bill was $40. The Brisket had amazing flavor, but a lot of fat. However, the pulled pork had no flavor and very little fat. They offer original and sweet bar-b-que sauce. The tea was good, the chips are individual bags and the potato salad wasn't to our liking. The ambiance was quiet as we were the only patrons at the time, mid-afternoon. The tables are covered with picnic tablecloths and the chairs are 1970 diner style. The restaurant seats about 40, I may be off by 5 or 10 either way. The restrooms were clean and stocked. They have a TV and customer access to the remote. The floors were sticky, but the establishment was, overall, clean. The staff was prodigious, helpful and over the top kind. I would definitely try this esablishment again and recommend it to the masses. I would also like to see more advertisement so that they don't succumb to small buisness misfortune and leave this area. 1- 1/2 star taken for fatty brisket, making the half pound seem more like a fourth of a pound of brisket, 1/2 star taken for sticky floors I would recommend giving this place a try. read more

I have been here twice and each time the meat isn't warmed up. I hade the 2 meat special last time and the chopped brisket sandwich this time. I will have to go home and warm it up like last. For eat at the restaurant I guess you have to ask them to eat it up. The they serve it at the restaurant from my taste is cold an not edible. Warmed up it is great. If this is Texas style cold bbq, I will pass. You can be a great bbq place if you hade warm or hot food available. The bbq sauce is great. This is BBQ? 2 inch thick slices of fat laden flesh with no bark (crust), no smoke ring, and no flavor. This place has fallen way off. Sides were fairly generic and edible but most folks don't go to BBQ joints to eat sides. I like giving our local folks a chance but man this is ridiculous. Take the extra time and drive to Hamptons or Smokehouse or the Pit. Bubba's doesn't seem to be on top of their stuff anymore. They used to take BBQ a lot more seriously. read more

I really like this place and have been here a couple of times. The interior is small and not fancy at all, but the food is delicious. All day Wednesday's they have pulled pork sandwiches for $2 each. I think on Wednesday's they may give you a little less meat than they do on other days, but at $2 each, it is still a very good deal and a place I'll be returning to soon. read more

Humble beginnings... Bubba's Smokehouse looks a bit like a produce farm stand, except for an enclosed area in front with some tables and chairs. There's a lot to like about Bubba's, though. For such a simple and unsophisticated place, the service was genuinely heart-felt. Bubba himself came out and asked if it was my first time in, described the various sauces on the table, and helped me to some bottled water they keep in the back after I asked for tap water (tap water which is barely drinkable in San Angelo, by the way). At the same time, the food is good but not great. My ribs were a little tough and were not great cuts of meat (though to be fair, they were running out of ribs when I ordered). The sausage was good, and my sides of beans and potato salad were a little plain. I also wish that they provided a little better settings for their customers who are eating in. I took my meal at their restaurant, and yet I was given the same styrofoam container and plastic forks that the carry-outs received. Great restaurants don't pop up overnight, especially when they're a home-grown family operation like this one. Bubba's Smokehouse is worth keeping an eye on. read more

First meat was a chicken leg quarter and it was pretty good. The bbq sauce was pretty runny and didn't add much flavor to the smoked meat. The brisket I got was 1/2 fat. The first time I came here (visiting my son) I got the brisket plate. It was really good in flavor and not dry. The BBQ sauces are also really good. The sides...not so much. The potato salad was meh, the cole slaw was bland (needed acidity). The corn bread... okay. The next day, I got the pulled pork sandwich. It was good. Loved the sweet tea, too. My husband noted that there wasn't much of a smoke ring...something that his Kansas City roots notices. Why not more than three stars? This is just a personal preference, but the rub/glaze was a tad sweet for me. May have been a bad day for brisket, but mine was a little dry, although the flavor was good. The beans were perfectly cooked but a bit flavorless. The potato salad tasted like some you would buy in a tub at the grocery store. Not bad, just meh. If I go again, definitely getting the sausage. Overhyped and underwhelming.. Went here for some pulled pork and brisket. Meat had no hint of smoke at all, and neither did the restaurant or the area immediately outside the restaurant. Pulled pork had barely any moisture whatsoever and at times somewhat tough. Brisket was thick cut and fell apart into shreds when you picked it up. No fat cap or bark was present on the meat at all. Beans were plain without any flavor and the potato salad tasted like it was from a tub they probably bought from Sam's Club. Cornbread mini muffin was dried out and hard to swallow. Luckily, it was gone in only 2 bites. The place was way overpriced (around 13 dollars for a 2 meat plate) for the quality of food. read more

Bubba's is really close to my office so we have lunch there once or twice a month. The food has been great every time I've eaten there. The Bubba-Tator has got to be the best value on the menu. Huge oven baked potatoes filled with either chopped brisket or chopped sausage. (Either way you can't go wrong.) The potato also comes with butter, cheese, and sour cream if you'd like it, all for around $5.00. They have several sauces to choose from if BBQ sauce is your thing. I like that the meat comes plain and you add sauce if you like it. The brisket is always plenty moist without sauce. My fave is the Rib Sauce which is smokey and mighty sweet. I'm not always a sausage fan but their sausage is really good! The staff is always very friendly and the service is quick. I will say that if you dine in, plan on smelling like a camp fire the rest of the day. It's not visibly smokey inside but you will definitly smell it on your clothes when you leave - not like that's a bad thing when you're from Texas :-) I gave Bubba's five stars as it's definitely the best BBQ I've had in San Angelo, and we've tried every BBQ joint we've seen here. Wow!! Went there yesrerday, first time in a very long time. First time I had the pork ribs . By far the best ribs in town. The rub was spot on, and I added just a little of their sauce they had on the table that was not nessasary but added a great flavor. Potato salad and beans were traditional and great. Just what you would expect. I dont know how many bbq joints I have been in that screwed the beans and potato salad up because they wanted to be different. Bubbas ROCKS!!!! Will be up on my list of places to go back to time and time again. Really, I cant remember why I havent been back other than it is not on a busy street in a part of town I travel.
