I'm not sure why the reviews for all hotels on Georges island are so bad. I think it has to do with levels of expectation based on price point. Are you going to compare this Hotel to the breakers Hotel in Palm Beach at a minimum of $3500 a night? No you are not. We paid $185 for a wonderful 1 night stay. On the water steps from the ocean. The room was clean. The bed was comfortable. The air conditioning was cold. This Hotel is a 1960s concrete old style Hotel and it is exactly what it is supposed to be. Does the bathtub and toilet drain slow. Yes it does but so what. All of the restaurants and amenities are within walking distance of this Hotel. I found the check in to be efficient and a Hotel staff Very pleasant. Saint George Island is beautiful. I'm soooo thankful to be checking out of this place after one night!!! Being completely honest...it was the best room on St George Island, because it was also the only room available within 20 miles and we were tired of driving. The room was clean, but extremely dated. Cinder block walls, old furniture, 70's bath tiles, and bare looking, but the bed was comfortable. The air conditioning~~~sweet baby Jesus, I thought we were sent to hell it was so hot! My makeup melted right off my face! Here's the kicker, it was $235 for the one night. Our truck with air conditioning would've been better temperature wise. So swooosh.... that money pretty much went down toilet. I'd hate to forget, they charged a quarter if you wanted to fill your little ice bucket from your room. The beach was nice. We were pleasantly surprised. For an older place with many mixed reviews it is much better than expected. Yes the bathroom is small but seriously how much are you in there? They have all the amenities of larger more expensive places. The bed is super comfortable. Beware of the corners though. They stick out a bit so I whacked my knee a couple of times till I learned lol. It is quaint, clean & within walking distance to many shops & restaurants. I stayed here just before the spring breakers and coronavirus pandemic. If I can leave you with a realistic impression of the Buccaneer Inn in just one sentence it would be: You get what you expect. I booked a room for a two nights here over other SGI hotels/motels because of its proximity to the beach. I did enjoy that the beach was in their backyard and went to the beach frequently, however the overall motel is just okay. The rooms have concrete walls, bright colors and vinyl flooring. Nothing special but will work just fine to keep you comfortable. The staff did a good job with cleaning the rooms and replenishing towels when prompted. I did have an issue with my stay as the front desk staff couldn't understand my stay was for two nights, not one. I did book through a third-party website so eventually I was able to figure it out and informed them so we weren't kicked out after one night. Even though I figured out the booking issue and informed them, they still deactivated my room key and didn't have housekeeping come till way later. That was a bit annoying but since I got a better deal through the third party I didn't complain. Pool was not great. It was small and overcrowded with kids who's parents were not abiding by the rules. Skip the pool and just hit the beach instead. It's walkable to the grocery stores and other restaurants so that was good. No issues with parking thankfully. read more

To be clear, this place is clearly a MOTEL. It's old, dated, and no-frills. The interior walls of the rooms are painted cinder block. I question the cleanliness of the polyester bed spread. There were crying and screaming children in the room that adjoined ours. We planned to stay 3 nights here and left after 14 hours. This place has location on the beach, but nothing else. Very basic motel but perfectly adequate for our needs for a place to stay for one night. The front desk people were exceptionally helpful. There were plenty of fresh towels and toiletries. The beds were comfortable. The little fridge did not keep things very cold. There was coffee available for morning, but no tea, which is what I drink. read more

I booked a room at the Buccaneer inn at the last minute to attend a wedding at the plantation. I'd never been to St George before so this was my first experience on the island. While the beaches are really nice, I wasn't impressed by the hotel or the local restaurants and attractions. it just seemed a little run down and dirty. I was completely astonished when I drove to the plantation side of the island and saw the stark difference in appearance. But back to the Buccaneer hotel. This place gets 3 stars because the staff was great. Super friendly, and as accommodating as possible. Every single person I interacted with was great. The room on the other hand was a different story. It definitely felt like a roadside motel. Painted cinderblock walls, bleach stained green carpet, and a faint smell of mold. The Marriott this is not... but for $135/night for a last minute booking on an island with only a couple of hotels to choose from, I guess I can't complain. I will say. The fact that you can just walk right onto the beach with your beach chair and cooler is pretty cool. Perhaps the larger family size rooms are better kept... and in that case, this place wouldn't be so bad for a short family beach vacation. read more

Great place to stay for the 4th! Right on the beach, great pool, clean hotel and the big beautiful ocean. You are right near the Blue Parrot tiki bar too. The coffee pot is small and second day they didnt give us refills. But front desk was super nice and gave us bandaid when we had a little misshap in the ocean. read more

The Buccaneer Inn is on the beautiful ocean and this is the only positive thing about it. It's a dive. Even though it's going through renovations, there's not much that can be done to improve this hotel. The rooms are dark and worn out. The AC was stuck on 78. The bathroom was worn out with rusted dust filled outtake fan. The TV only had one channel. There's no working ice machine anywhere. The walkways and steps are trashed. I don't recommend this hotel at all. read more

Only stayed for two nights, 185 a night was way too pricey to be so outdated and with a musty smell.. first night, I thought I didn't use enough bug spray at the beach. 2nd night, I woke up at 3 am with my body itching all over and on fire ... Pulled the covers back and bam. Infestation of bed bugs!! I'm covered in bites from head to toe... Red blister type bites that hurt bad.. :/ This was definitely not the trip I wanted and looked forward to for such a long time.. The manager did give us a full refund but the over night guy mentioned they just had the exterminator out. Probably not the first case of this that they have had. Price was nice and the rooms were very clean. We enjoyed our stay, however, the office staff was extremely rude and the garbage cans by the beach entrance and the pool were never emptied during our 5 night stay. By the time we left, garbage was overflowing and blowing out onto the beach. Also, the only working ice machine was in the office and half the time, it was locked and we couldn't get in. read more

It's an unfortunate situation happening at the Old Bucc.... my husband and I have been going to the Bucc for over 10 years, we have loved it, been loyal, always staying there, we got married on a balcony of one of the suites in 2011... This place was "our place". But recently we can't help but notice all the changes and the decline of the infrastructure of the property that seems to be going unacknowledged by the new ownership. This place had 2 things going for it... the location and loyal customers. Deterioration of the property will be it's downfall. Our last stay in February was sadly but likely our last (no hot water, poor bathroom drainage, moldy room, curtains falling down, and crumbling concrete everywhere... yet raised rates ) My husband and I have left the Bucc for the St George Inn. Hoping some money can be put back into the property at some point and we can return. read more

We booked Memorial day weekend first floor. Got there to check in, had us on second floor, wasn't able to do the stairs. Checked in first floor. All flooring new, new paint job, new shower surround. The green tile bathroom shower was patched with pink tile, instead or white to match the surround, strange, or cheap? The furniture was still old wore beds, old bed spreads and delaminated dresser, bathroom door rusty hinges and split door. Spent all that money and then half assed the rest. read more

In this class of hotels, this is a solid 3 star place. We had to stay here for a couple nights and can say... 1) Our room was quiet. We were on the outside away from the pool. 2) It was clean, which is difficult given the age & wear/tear of the place. NO mildew in the otherwise ancient bathroom. 3) Sheets, towels, mattress, pillows were all clean & of decent quality. 4) A/C worked well. 5) Lots of TV channels from which to choose. 6) Decent sized mini fridge in the room. 7) Next door to one of our favorite restaurants in the area - The Blue Parrot. (Too bad we didn't have time to hit it up on this visit!) Cons 1) Wifi contained in one room. (Our room was close enough to that one room to use.) 2) Do not look at the flooring. It is horrid. We made a trail of towels to get from one area to the next. 3) Furniture, bedspread, & TV were super old. Will we stay there again? Not if we can avoid it, but it's difficult to find a home to rent for only a couple nights in the summer SO Buccaneer it was. read more

Have stayed at the Buccaneer Inn in 2009 and recently in 2016. When we stayed in 2009, we stayed for a couple of days and have a large room right on the beach, not in the main buildings - it was fantastic. When we stayed last weekend, we arrived late and decided to make a pit stop on the island (one of our favorite places to go in Florida). Thanks to some rain earlier in the week, the Inn had some cancellations and the front desk person was very accommodating for us. She promised us a room and said she would honor the lowest rate even if all the rooms were gone by the time we got there. (We called when we were about an hour or so away). This hotel isn't fancy, but you can not beat the location. It is right on the beach and next to the Blue Parrot for food and drinks. The hotel is clean and everyone is very welcoming. If you're looking for a resort, this isn't your place. But if you want to go to the beach and enjoy a small beach town, the sand in between your toes and salt water on your skin, this is the place to be! read more

Very disappointed! Have stayed at Buccaneer many times over the years, always pleased. Until this trip. Arrived Sun afternoon for stay until Tues check out. Pool closed Sun pm through Tues morning- "someone pooped in pool". Cable out Monday-Tues " it's out over the entire county". Multiple dogs barking throughout night... maybe owners left them in rooms? Smushed dog poop on walkway and stairs. Just nasty. Light kept blinking off in bathroom. And what's up with 10x12 tv? No maidservice at all. Just completely bypassed our room. We did best we could, enjoyed island as usual. My grandaughter enjoyed couple hrs Tues am before checkout in pool. Came home exhausted! No apologies, no offer of partial refund, etc. Nothing. I won't be including Buccaneer in my plans ever again. read more

is an older hotel, don't expect the fancy look. I was looking for a trip with my 2 children. We stayed in a room with a kitchenette and 2 queen beds. Room is pool side, and just a few feet from the beach. The staff is just as nice as they can be. Dishes are provided if needed. Coffee pot in room. The beds are comfortable, pillows are big and fluffy. If you are looking for simple, this is the place. The price was very reasonable. Pay for 6 nights get the 7th night free. This was a perfect getaway for my family. If you are looking for fancy you can rent condos for double or triple the price. Restaurants are within walking distance. There is a rental shop across the street where you can rent everything from bicycles to golf carts, paddle boards to kayaks. Very friendly atmosphere. read more

Just stayed the weekend here while photographing a wedding. The place was clean, and the staff was very friendly. The place is a bit outdated. It just has an older feel to it. Also, they have a coin operated ice machine. (Never came across one of these before.) All in all it was a good experience. They say to never judge a book by it's cover and I don't think it's truer for this place. This hotel is definitely under-recognized because of it's grungy- yet charming, exterior! The hotel itself is a yellow/gold with a big pirate painted on each building, you can see it as soon as you arrive on the island. We checked in Sunday afternoon and the front desk staff was helpful and efficient. We stayed in the far building (from the office) in a gulf-side suite. Our room was exceptionally clean and seemed to be fairly newly renovated. The microwave in the room was brand new and the min fridge was a great size to hold groceries for the four days we were here (it also had a freezer for ice). The room was cleaned daily, fresh towels were brought, and there were no complaints in that department. The best part about this hotel is the location. We had a balcony overlooking the beach and could walk down the stairs and literally be on the beach. At this hotel you are walking distance to many restaurants and attractions on the island. We visited over new year's and found that since it was off season, some things were closed but we did find more than enough things to keep us busy! For everything you get, the price is excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and hope to return in the future! read more

Shabby depressing rooms. The stove was probably older than I was. Didn't want to put my food in the refrigerator and didn't wanna walk across the floor barefoot. Never received our wake up call. Impossible to read in your room at night because the lights are so dim.Clearly would not recommend this hotel. read more

Before staying here you may want to get a tetanus shot because I've never seen so much rust in a room. The rim of the lamp shade and the ceiling in the bathroom all had rust. Too make it worst, the tub had mold on the grout and the towels could be used to sand down wood. Only reason it received two stars is because we had a balcony on the beach - so great location. read more

If you are looking for new and fancy, this is not for you but it is very clean and staff are very friendly and helpful. Family owned since 1950 or so and Great location right on the beach. We arrived without reservations and it was not an issue but it was early February. Summer time would require a reservation I am sure. read more

We chose the Buccaneer Inn because it is the only hotel directly on the beach. I reserved a deluxe gulf front room with a balcony and the room did not disappoint in size or in cleanliness. I was dismayed to discover that the free WIFI advertised does not extend to the gulf front building but only to the rooms around the pool (main area, the gulf front rooms are a separate building). We survived without WIFI, and a phone, as the phone line had been knocked out by lightening the week before (stuff happens). The pool area is really nice, and is kept very clean. The exterior of the building could use some sprucing up; I know in any ocean front building the salt spray takes a toll but to keep returning guests I would consider this a priority. I think my only complaint would be that as excellent a job as housekeeping did with our room (it was spotless) the hall areas and elevator should be swept out on a regular basis. There was litter in the elevator that was there our entire stay. Another suggestion I might make would be to put more recycle bins adjacent to the rooms. A couple of times I walked plastic water bottles down to the bin outside the pool, which was the only one I could find. I would have recycled more items had I found a bin closer to our room (hallway? by the elevator?) All in all we would consider returning to the Buccaneer in the future should we come back to St George Island. read more
