Your local dive where the beer is cheap and the taxidermy is plentiful. Ephemera fills the walls and shelves. There is also a pool table. It's frequented by locals and tourists alike. Is there anything better than being drunk in Laramie surrounded by just an absolute melting pot of different humans in a bar full of stuffed wild animals and a bullet hole behind the bar? I submit to you that there is not. This is the epitome of the Pearly Gates. When you die, you don't get to heaven. You get to Buckhorn. There are not one, not two but THREE levels to this bar, each with a different themed music for the night. When I was there, first floor was normal music. Second floor was more EDM type stuff. Third floor was a full on latin night. I come from a state where alcohol is more controlled than nearly anything else, so I got 2 double long island iced teas. They were delicious and oh so potent and cheap. This place is a 5 hour drive from where I live and there are many a weekend where I believe it would be worth it to get buckwild at the Buckhorn again. Seemed much bigger in college, but maybe because there were always so many people jammed in there on Fri and Sat nights. The gnarly Buck is what we used to call the Buckhorn. When I went to UW this was a regular hangout. Live music played upstairs at The Parlor. Great memories (and yea I have them even with legal age being 19 back then). Back in th day the bar itself was carved full of initials. That bar was replaced with a new polyurethane coated carved bar, but if you're one of the 1,000's (like my hubby) whoes name or initials were there, never fear - yours weren't thrown away. They recycled the old bar into the tabletops and coated them in polyurethane too. Preserved in history! The smoking room is not really seperated from the front of the bar, and the stank does move up - but unless you're deathly allergic, go have a drink at the Buck. 5 stars for the taxidermy; 4 stars for the drink prices and the speed of refills; 3 stars for being open at 1 AM on a weeknight (some other bars were closed) 2 stars for the cleanliness of the restrooms; 1 star for the crowd (Tuesday must've been douche night...most of the crowd seemed barely old enough to drink and unable to hold their liquor.) If you're only going to hit one bar in Laramie, this is probably your best stop. It's an icon. And there's a bullet hole in the mirrored bar, and a tall tale or two to go with it. I was driving back from Lander listening to the Broncos game. Denver just threw an interception when I pulled into Rawlins. I fought the weather to Laramie and needed a break. I stopped at the Buckhorn for a break and a beer. I've been going there since I was in grad school. It's a Laramie fixture. The Broncos were getting waxed and I took off at halftime. We walked out and went to a friendly bar. I guess the worn out looking bartender didn't need our tip money. After descending a staircase, as if entering a madman's torture chamber, you enter a heavily graffitied 3 stall room with almost zero privacy and at least a quarter inch of water on the floor (did I mention the urinals go all the way down to the floor?). They tried churching it up once by putting up new wall trim, but that was graffitied up again within a matter of weeks... must be the clientele they attract. read more

To miss the Buckhorn Bar would be to totally miss the point of the entire Laramie experience --if there is such a thing. I attended the University of Wyoming for a while in 2009-2010, and this was pretty much THE hangout in town from Thursday to Saturday nights. With a large college crowd and a good mix of the locals as well, the Buckhorn Bar gets totally packed with partygoers looking for everything from a good time, to a one-night-stand, to a full on legitimate bar fight. The fighting part even has a history: the downstairs bar still has a bullet hole in it from when somebody got pissed and went all '50 Cent' on this place back in the day. Pussies need not apply though, as when you walk in the door, you're promptly greeted by a wide variety of animal heads on display. In addition, this place is notorious for being a whiskey bar, so you need not fear that you won't have an eventful night at The Buck. I am a fan because upstairs from Buckhorn, was a small night club lounge. They actually played Hip Hop!! YES! Came here during Jubilee! I was in town for over a week and a local told me about hip hop being played upstairs. Came on a Friday during Jubilee and the town was crowded with people. Walked in the bar downstairs got looked at crazy by old Cowboys the same way they looked at me 4 years ago. Four years later I came back. Opened a tab downstairs but ended up hanging out upstairs because of the friendly bartenders. Drinks are very cheap compared to big cities. Thanks to my beautiful bartender Stephanie, for giving such great customer service ;-) ! We conversed and I told her where I was from, she told the DJ and the DJ played some Bay Area Hits to make me feel like at home!! One of the best. Since they played country every where I went. Had to come back again Saturday to hang out with Stephanie and realized this was the University of Wyoming Athletes hang out. 4 people offered to buy me drinks just because I dressed different and I was drinking Beautifuls (henny and grand marnier) which they never had or made. This is a solid, very old dive bar in downtown Laramie. There is a bullet hole in the mirror behind the bar. Is this bar the cleanest? No. But, It's a fun place to grab a drink and hang out. The bar itself is really neat because it looks like something you'd sit at in a western movie. I also like all the taxidermy on display. Maybe that's weird, but I it really makes the atmosphere perfect for a night out in Laramie. On a Saturday night, the crowd was decent and the bartender was super attentive. I didn't have to struggle to get her attention when I wanted another drink and the prices were pretty reasonable. I also felt like the security staff was super friendly. Maybe I'm just used to grouchy bouncer dudes in Denver, but these guys were chill. I would recommend sitting by the window so you can people watch, but there are pool tables and a dance floor for those who are interested in such things. I would give this place another star except for the bathroom being pretty gross, but my standards for bar bathrooms are probably a bit high. read more

The Buck is larger than the sum of it's part - it's one of the best iconic western dive bars....you know, the kind that only exist in the historic areas and look more like an old man's wrinkles then the latest hip hangout. Don't judge it by the rather ordinary exterior, the ice in the urinals, the layer of smoke that has misted the old two-headed calf mounted high on the wall....or by anything you see or do there - but at the end of the evening you'll look back and smile. The Buckhorn is a relic form a dying era of Americana pure and simple. It is like the place was frozen in time. The interior of The Buckhorn is almost out of a western with its old wood furniture as well as its worn look. Expect to see various animals and antler trophies on the walls of the establishment. Also in the mirror that is placed by the bar there is a bullet hole or two. I remember the service to be decent and somewhat friendly though at the time I went there it was a slow day I believe there was just three people in the bar. Ah the buck... You know what rhymes with buck? I don't need to tell you. This is the kind of place that you love to hate and always talk smack about but always find yourself coming back to. Drinks are pretty much on par with the other places around here as far as prices go. Just don't ask the bartenders to make anything complicated. They will probably screw it up. Basic stuff though, you will absolutely get messed up. They make them strong. On weekends this place gets packed. Masses of sweaty and drunk people grinding up against one another. Unfortunately, there was a punk in the bar with a red bandana around his leg and wearing swimming trunks who thought it appropriate to spit on a black mans back. My husband saw it and walked over to talk to this douche. His friend intervened and they talked. This bar is an awesome place to go for a fun night! I have been to the Buckhorn multiple times. There is an upstairs and a downstairs. The upstairs is a great dancing area (with another bar to buy drinks at) where the downstairs is usually more of a relaxing place where live bands come to play and tables are available to enjoy your night. I personally had a financial situation involving a mischarge on my card one night and I had to speak with the owner of the bar. I have NEVER delt with such a great business owner in my entire life. He is a kind, honest, family man who works very hard to ensure his business at the Buckhorn has a great reputation. He's a great person who runs a great business with great vaules behind his policies. So here I am posting for everyone to see that the Buckhorn Bar in downtown Laramie is a safe, fun and reliable place to enjoy an evening at! read more

If I could negative rate this bar I would. I took my deaf friend in for a night out. Yes she speaks but is sometimes hard to understand. The bartender misunderstood our order(we had been ordering the same drinks all night) and when I asked him to fix it he got very rude. Upset I continued to ask for a refund of the drink we ordered. He then took the wrong drink and threw it out. Refusing to make another or give us our money back. I then tried to explain that my friend is sometimes hard to understand and it's not all his fault but please get me the drink we ordered. He then told us to go to hell and called me a bitch. He messed up 2 other drinks for other customers and fixed those all while this is going on. When I pointed that out he called me a liar about my friend being deaf and then said he was deaf and I needed to stop bitching and get the hell out. No one else would listen or fix the drink and me continuing to ask got us thrown Out! Worst bar ever and serious discrimination. We are in the process of filing formal complaints. This staff needs proper training in how to be respectful and the right way to treat customers. read more
