Rental cars are definitely a "6 of 1, half dozen of another" situation. I have used just about every one of the major brands. There's virtually no difference between them. The line is always too long. There are always a bunch of upsell options they try to sell you. You rarely ever know what kind of vehicle they will end up giving you. From reading other reviews I had the similar experience with being blatantly ripped off and will be reporting it Its a shame that one person (Portero) can cost a traveler extra money simply by lying. I noticed a $44 fuel charge. He said it would come off once we returned the car full. LIE. LIE. LIE. I hadn't rented a car in awhile -thought maybe they changed how they do it?? He also had us down for Roadside assistance -I missed it , when I reviewed on the little screen at the counter. I was never asked if I wanted any extras, nor did I have an opportunity to accept or decline the extras. He did that for us. He really was a scam artist. Lesson learned 1) Question everything. 2) Don't let them brush you off or rush you 3) Make them readjust the rental agreement BEFORE signing He couldn't even tell the truth about where to find the car and told us to wait 15mins before heading out. As far as service, the ladies at the counter have been friendly and courteous when I've been there. My car rentals are pretty good most of the time, and it's cheaper, I guess. However, the $200 hold that they put is not ideal. I RECOMMEND RESERVING AND PAYING AT THE COUNTER. I did need to buy a c charger this time though, which was not explained to me at the time. I would just keep that in mind with the newer modeled cars. Located right outside of baggage claim & drop off is easy. You just pull up, they scan it, and email you the receipt. read more

The staff was friendly, but beware - their vehicles are not maintained. They just pass vehicles from one unsuspecting victim (err... customer) to the next. We had no problem picking up ours, but I found it odd that the dashboard menu wasn't initially set to show the speedometer or MPG. No, it was set to show the battery charge. You can see where I'm going or in our case "not going" with this. The car started right up, so I didn't think anything about it at the time. The second night in, I had a hiccup starting the vehicle. I thought maybe it was due to me not being used to the car. It happened again a day or two later and I thought the same thing. By the fifth day, the battery was dead and we were stuck. We called their roadside assistance and they jumped us with a battery pack. They said this happens all the time with rental vehicles due to the salt water in the air and the car's lack of maintenance. Once jumped, went straight to the rental location and they did get us a different car, no questions asked. However, they sent me a bill for $105 for roadside, which roadside said could be coming. They said I had to pay it because I hadn't elected for the roadside coverage and didn't return it when I noticed someone had left the battery level menu on the dashboard when I first got in the car and should have known what was going to happen. So I asked if I should return a vehicle if the tire pressure menu is the first to show up as I should foresee there will be a flat tire in my future. Speaking of tires, I noticed on that second day that the tires on this car were completely bald. They told me over the phone that their expectation is that you KNOW how the vehicle was or wasn't maintained up to the moment you rent it. Customers shouldn't have to pay and be inconvenienced due to them simply not maintaining their vehicles. I expected that when I rent a vehicle, that basic items like battery and tires would be routinely checked (especially safety issues). I was wrong and guess I expected too much. Their choice to not maintain their vehicles cost me $105 along with the inconvenience it left us. I called them about the bill and ran this all by them. They were fine with me taking my future business elsewhere as well as writing this negative review. I understand. Employees are limited to what they can do due to company policy, but my point is really that they just don't inspect their cars at all, even for safety purposes and customers shouldn't have to pay extra or be inconvenienced because of it. If they had just asked customers returning vehicles if they had any irregular happen, this vehicle would have been flagged. And to have bald tires on a rental vehicle on top of it, well that's just not acceptable and a real safety hazard. I imagine there's got to be some safety regulations with inspecting rental cars on a regular basis. They just don't do it. I did, by the way, notify them of the tire issue when I returned the car. They marked it on the window, so hopefully it got resolved before they passed the problem along to the next unsuspecting person. Overall, the experience at the rental desk was good, but I just can't see myself renting again from them due to their choices to potentially put unsafe vehicles on the road. I recently rented out of Elmhurst queens and had to wait almost 1 1/2 hours online just to get my car. Then when they told me it was being gassed up it actually was still being cleaned. ***Late post from my Oct 2023 East Coast trip*** After getting my luggage at Myrtle Beach Int'l Airport, I walked across the street to the rental car building. They had several different car rental agencies. I booked my rental car from Budget. I normally book from Enterprise, but Budget's total car rental cost was a better deal than Enterprise. My rental was a pick up from one location and drop off to another location so the total cost was higher than norm. It was all good... I was ending my trip at Nashville, TN so I had to fork out the extra drop off fee. There were only a few people in line at the time. The lady who helped me was very nice. I even asked her what she would recommend for places to eat. Yes, I'm always thinking about food especially when I'm travelling... I don't want to miss out on great eats from a far LOL. She said Broadway At The Beach is a must visit when in Myrtle Beach. I said fantastic... I'm there... tomorrow of course. Thank you for the recommendation! I will never rent from budget again. I was clear with the agent at the counter when I picked up the car that I was declining all additional services including insurance, roadside and gas option. While in the end, it was my fault for signing the agreement without reading it to make sure all were declined, the agent rushed me to sign by saying "oh this is just saying this and that's just saying g that". Whole rental experience was great until I got my e-receipt. I was slammed for gas charges on two different rentals. One showed 14.3 gallons out and 13.2 gallons in. The time of the email receipt was exactly the time I dropped the car off. How did they measure the gas in such a short time? I filled it up before dropping off until it clicked, and then one more click for good measure. It was 3 miles to the rental return from the gas station, so no way I could have burned over a gallon. The other car I noticed was at one tick below full as I was driving out. Yea, I forgot to check it in the lot. We drove 41 miles. I went to the gas station and stopped at 2.5 gallons which would more than cover the 41 miles we had driven. Once again, I was slammed with a fuel charge. I was able to contest both successfully with no resistance, so it seems like they are trying to slam people hoping they won't notice and if they DO notice, they will take the charge off. On the plus side, FastPass is awesome. There was a queue of about 15-20 people in the "normal" line and no one in the FastPass lane. I was in and out within 5 minutes. read more

Refused to give me the car and told me that I was not eligible because I didn't have my return flight yet. they also wanted to charge me $250 extra even though I already paid in full. The brunette older women ripped her name tag off and told me I had an attitude(I was just asking questions), I informed her I was extremely upset with how the situation was being handled and she just kept getting nastier.Another women came over and acted extremely unprofessional. I'm not sure why this place has such low reviews. We made our reservation and checked in as soon as we got our luggage. The lady that helped us was so nice and helpful. She got us checked in efficiently and got everything processed with no issues. When we went outside to get our car it was clean with no issues. It was in the parking spot we were directed to. I was then asked to sign a tiny card reader that had no information on it. I returned the car at the end of the weekend with a full tank of gas and found out they added $85 for a tank refill and roadside assistance. When I asked for it to be removed they said I already opted into roadside. Sure because you ignored my answer, added it to my account, and didn't show me it was added when I put my initial deposit down. They basically stole $85 from me. I made a reservation for a SUV (Rav 4 or similar) for Sept 26th at the Myrtle Beach airport location. I went to pick it up between 7-7:30 PM and everything went well. Employee (middle aged woman) was very nice. I was next to another customer who was offered any type of car they wanted (SUV, pickup truck, passenger car). When I went to pick up the SUV, it was a regular passenger car so I went back in (it was pouring out so I was soaked) and told the employee that handled my check in that I ordered SUV and there was a regular car in the spot. She said something like well we don't have any and turned to walk away. Not I'm sorry I'll look into it. I said but that's what I reserved. And she snapped well we don't have any and walked away. Another employee (young man) who was right there told me would check and said they have a Ford Explorer I could have. I guess this is bigger than a regular SUV which is fine, I needed the space and appreciated him working it out so quickly. My questions are: 1. Why did the first employee check me in for a SUV, pick a car and not say anything? Was I charged for an SUV and given a car and even if I wasn't, why didn't she say anything? Why didn't you have a SUV on hold for this reservation? 2. Why is the other employee offering any type of car, including a SUV, to another customer when apparently you didn't have a SUV for my reservation? Why are they offered anything they want while I'm not even alerted to my down graded vehicle? 3. Most importantly: how do you have an employee that treats a customer like this? No warning about the wrong car. No apology when I come back. Dismisses me, is rude to me, doesn't help me at all while another employee is able to give great customer service in minutes? I wish I had the names of these employees to help you locate them because the young male employee deserves employee of the month for seeing a customer who was very dissatisfied and helped him before the situation could have escalated. I was very polite about this but that employee might have seen other customers lose it at this point and jumped into action without thinking. So we flew into Myrtle beach after a 3 and half hour delay 2.5 on the plane with 3 kids. We pre pd for a car 2 thousand dollars for two weeks. They gave us a car that smelled so bad of smoke my 3 kids under 9 where crying and we don't smoke. So the switch is to a car that's pretty much the same so we thought , ! We finally get home in north Myrtle at midnight. We noticed the next morning that the license plate isn't in the truck, it's filthy , and the rails to step into the car so t work. So we go all the way back a hour to the air port to fix the situation, calmly and even tell the girl beyoncee Brown omg do u ever get a day off trying to be nice! She proceeded to call my 9 yr old child and mother a liar , we had a bag of garbage that we found all over the car, we simple asked to have a different car and wanted to even soend more money to rent a second car! They were so rude never in my life have I dealt with a staff especially this little girl beyoncee that was so rude the way she spoke to my mother, me and the lack of help was unacceptable! I made reservations for a rental online, using my debit credit card, I no longer need the rental I canceled the reservation, the company wanted to charge a cancellation fee of $150 dollars not fully refund your money if you prepaid then they will do a credit check if you pay using a debit card. My husband and I needed to rent a car for a one way trip from Holden Beach, NC to Atlanta, GA. We would be closing on our home in Atlanta, and driving a Penske rental truck back to Holden Beach with our remaining belongings. (The majority of our stuff had been professionally moved by Two Men and a Truck previously; they were awesome - check out my review on Yelp.) Checking around for rental cars, most of the premier rental places - Hertz, Enterprise, Avis - were charging about $300-350. A friend suggested I rent a car through CostCo Travel, suggesting it might be less expensive. Lo and behold, it was! We were able to reserve a full size car through Budget for $118. So far, so good. Then we showed up at the Myrtle Beach airport to pick up our car. We arrived around 8:00 AM, and there were four people in line ahead of us. No problem, happy to wait. Thirty minutes later, still waiting. It was almost 9:00 AM before we were in the rented Jeep Renegade and on our way to Atlanta. Almost an hour wait with two agents working is definitely below average performance in my book. P.S. The POS Jeep Renegade got us safely to Atlanta, although it was one of the worst vehicles I've ever driven. Unless you enjoy under-powered and oddly-shifting vehicles, avoid this make and model at all costs! Maybe we should have paid the $15 up-charge for the Cadillac. read more

AC is not working in rental. Called while traveling to Myrtle Beach. I was told by the representative to go to MB International Airport explain the issue and they would exchange the car. Upon arriving I was told they have no cars and maybe try driving to Charleston 2 hours away. Went back 2 days later, vehicles that were the sitting there Saturday and still there on Monday, including the full-size crew cab pickup truck that could replace mine. I called the 800# 3 times, spent 45 min on the phone the last call in which 35-40 was on hold. No fix and no one came back on so I hung up. Spoke to the Budget where I picked it up at and they try calling the location here in MB and got no where. I have had nothing but issues tenting from Budget/Avis and I will never use them again. If I could select a no star option, I would. I asked for a reservation and reserved a car at a certain time. My six-year-old and I arrived at the airport an hour before my reservation time. I stood in line for that hour, plus some, and the employee saw me standing there. Upon approaching the counter, the employee was very rude and disrespectful. They would not give me a rental because I did not have a certain card. they were very rude and would not even listen to what I had to say. I asked for a refund because I never received services and they would not give me that I filed the claim with my bank and playing a game of cat and mouse with this company for over two months. I spoke with my bank today and they said the claim has been closed because they issued a refund, but when I looked at my bank statement, no refund had been issued. Not only did they lie about giving me the refund, but they released a fraudulent statement to my bank. I still have no refund in my account and will be reopening a claim and reporting them. We opted to do the fastbreak pass thinking it would be quick but it was quite the opposite. We were first in line for the fastbreak pass but there was no one sitting at the desk. Two other employees were working at desks next to it and were working through the regular line that was out the door because they were moving so slow. A lady mid-way through the line said she had been waiting for 2 hours. We asked for assistance and the employee said she would go check on something and be right back but she never returned to the desk.
