Terrible customer service despite the expense. I broke my glasses and came in for a replacement. Rather than assist me navigating the insurance options, I was lectured that "glasses and contacts are expensive, tough luck." The optician also suggested that I had done something wrong to damage the hinge. Maybe so, but why does this matter? I'm asking for help and for the best options to reduce cost. Very expensive place to do business and quite a few of their practices feel scammy. I was told my insurance would cover my eye exam; the first thing they do is do a retinal scan which costs $35 and isn't covered by insurance. The contact lens exam wasn't covered, either, and it cost $90, and the lens tech spent all of 5 minutes with me and examined the lenses in my eyes for all of 15 seconds. He gave me two trial pairs, and one didn't fit well. I told him my contacts weren't fitting well and the other lens tech (who I think might be the owner, Buenau, himself) checked me and asked if I knew the difference between a lens being inside out or not. I've been wearing contacts since the 90's and I know if a lens is inside out or not. He just couldn't accept that the lenses didn't fit right, but instead just accused me of not knowing how to wear them correctly. One of the pairs he gave me costs $1000 a year, and one of the features is blue light filtering; we talked about blue light glasses and he was saying how great they are and how he'd put me in blue light glasses if the lenses didn't have them built in. I had told him that the American Academy of Opthamology doesn't recommend blue light glasses because there is no evidence they work better than a placebo pair and he said, "well, they just do eye surgery." The arrogance of that statement speaks for itself; I'm sure handing out boxes of contact lenses at a 5 minute appointment is far more involved and requires much more knowledge of current scientific literature than something as simple and straightforward as eye surgery. The whole exchange reeked of wanting to cash in on the increased screentime we're all experiencing. Even the retina scan didn't sit right, because you have to sign a waiver beforehand; not many legitimate medical procedures require that. I was close to walking out of there having spent $1600 until I realized what was happening. I'm going back to DiNapoli, where I'll be treated like family, not like an ATM. Buenau's Opticians is a family-run, intergenerational, custom optician store. Staff are uniformly pleasant and competent, including the opticians, who patiently answered this client's "million" questions. They have an excellent selection of frames, from affordable (for me) to expensive, but they always are ready to work with you on getting a style to fit your face as well as your economics. Staff are always willing to give you their opinion about what looks good, in a non-pressurized way. Buenau's offers excellent client relations in that if you run out of contacts, and they need to order them, they'll give you some free ones to hold you over. Similarly, they'll buy back any old, unopened boxes of contacts and replace them with new ones, should your prescription change. This is not the kind of help you can get at a BJ's, Costco, or other chain, discount store. They're great to have in our neighborhood. read more

I had among the worst patient care experiences of my life there. They put heavy pressure on me to pay for an additional scan that wasn't covered by my insurance and that I really didn't want. I ordered glasses at the end of the visit, and when I called two months later to ask about their status, they said they had forgotten to put the order in. I had also paid for high-index lenses, which I've ordered for years from many other optometrists always with the same good results. Buenau's didn't tell me that there are two different versions of that lens and that they would be ordering the thicker and lower quality of the two. When the glasses finally came, they were so thick as to be completely unusable, and now I'm just stuck with this expensive mistake. Terrible experience from beginning to end. read more

To update, I have discovered that I am highly suggestible, and left Buenau's with a prescription that was less powerful than I really needed. I came back twice to adjust the power, and the staff and optician were nothing but nice and helpful. While I would normally say that repeat visits for one prescription are a sign that the service was not good, I am sure this wasn't the case. I changed my mind about my prescription (which was lowered) after a few days. The sign outside the place says they specialize in difficult-to-fit clients. I have to agree, since it turns out I'm one of them. I'll never go anywhere else. read more

I dropped off my eyeglasses and my prescription at Buenau's giving the receptionist clear instructions to order new lenses. I also gave her frames. The young woman who waited on me seemed distracted so I asked her to give me her full attention before I gave her my order. She then took the order. I was lucky to find Bueneau's online upon moving back to the area because I have had uniformly pleasant experiences here. Everyone, from the rotating optometrists who do the exams to the staff, is pleasant and attentive and genuinely believes in good customer service. For example, despite a packed schedule, they squeezed in an emergency appointment to see the optometrist. They are also efficient: Items that needed to be ordered have always been delivered on time. It is a well-organized shop. They have a nice selection of frames, including higher-end options, and they have extensive experience fitting contact lenses (I have been to many other shops that were not so good). They are also generous with their time, as I have gone through a number of different frames there. I have never felt rushed or pressured and they do not try and upsell. This shop suffers from the mediocrity that characterizes many local business these days. No wonder they get beat by chains. They actually sent my 11 year-old son out of the store with the wrong glasses today. On pick up, they didn't even direct us to an optician for a fitting, which would have revealed the store's error. Worse yet, they had the nerve to call me at work several hours later and ask that I rush back so they can give the glasses to their proper owner. Yes, the staff is very friendly, and yes, they will give a full refund for glasses that aren't right, but I spent weeks with them trying to get the right glasses, and it turned out that their prescription was absolutely and totally wrong. They denied it, of course, but the proof, for me, was going to another optician down the street, who did another exam, and made glasses for me that are right. My glasses from Buenau's made me dizzy and I could not focus on distant objects. The other optician easily corrected the mistakes that Buenau's made, and I am happy with their glasses. I have had consistently positive experiences at Buenau's. The opticians go out of their way to make sure that you are satisfied. I am petite and most of the frames that are on the market are too big for me. The woman who helps me at Buenau's actually listens to what I want and finds appropriate options for me, even if it means special ordering a frame. Additionally, the optometrists there take the time to do a thorough eye exam and explain their findings and recommendations to me. Both Dr. Revai and Dr. Braim are great. Dr. Braim was especially good with my elderly relative who has special needs. The philosophy at Buenau's seems to be that they will do anything within reason to satisfy their customers.
