I made a classic booboo and mentioned wanting fernet and coke cos that was what everyone was drinking at the futbol game the day before. The guy was like no. He then proceeded to make us a fernet cocktail. As we had so much steak the say before, we opted for the smaller size here. We got the ribeye. Paired with it was their amazing mushroom dish served in a skillet. My god. That was the best thing I ate that day. We also got the pasta. So damn good. The 3 went perfectly together. From the moment we sat down, the service was warm and attentive, striking that perfect balance between professional and personable. Our meal started with a very large and warm complimentary bread service, a small but welcome touch that unfortunately some institutions in the United States have foregone after the pandemic in the name of cost cutting and profit maximization. Here's what ordered: Appetizers: - Ajillo Squid & Prawns: fainá, fermented tofu emulsion - Charred Fritters: bagnacauda sauce Entrée & Sides: - 21 oz New York Strip: cooked medium, sliced for sharing - Thick-Cut French Fries Drinks: - Glass of Malbec (graciously comped for our honeymoon) - a complementary Champagne toast, also comped for our honeymoon The Ajillo Squid & Prawns had incredible flavors, with the unique, rich fermented tofu emulsion tying everything together. The Charred Fritters were perfectly crisp, and the bagnacauda sauce added just the right amount of savory to the fried coating of the fritters. Then, came the star of the night--the 21 oz New York Strip. Cooked to a flawless medium, sliced tableside, and served with only salt on the side (which it barely needed), this steak was as good as it gets. Juicy, very flavorful, and melt-in-your-mouth tender, it's clear why Elena is regarded as one of the best steakhouses in the world. The thick-cut fries were a great side dish, like the steak fries at any other steakhouse. But we both left the dinner thinking that we should've ordered something more "unique" as a side. As if the food wasn't enough, our server surprised us by comping my glass of Malbec, followed by champagne to toast our honeymoon during dessert, a thoughtful gesture that made an already fantastic meal even more special. We started off with a basket of warm house bread, and it came with several different types, but by far my favorite was the focaccia, which was topped with cheese and herbs and had a lightly salty flavor! All the breads went nicely with the ramekin of sauce on the side, which our waiter described as homemade "mayonnaise." Next, we had the Silo Pampeano salad, made of quinoa, roasted almont, goat cheese, arugula pesto, and fresh arugula. The salad was nothing fancy, but dressed with a little olive oil and vinegar, made for a really refreshing yet hearty dish. Finally, we tried the Milanga Pampeana, which was a thinly-pounded slice of deer meat, which was then breaded and fried, served over fried slices of sweet potato and a side of Mendozan tomatican, which was a mixture of egg, tomatoes, onions, and peppers cooked in a small iron skillet. While the deer meat had a nice gamey flavor, parts of it were a bit tough, and there was way too much greasy breading, given how thin the slice of meat was! However, it was tasty nevertheless, and I wouldn't hesitate to come back to try more of the menu. The standout of this restaurant to me, however, was the service--there was only one waiter manning the entire restaurant, but he was so kind, attentive, friendly, and helpful! What that looked like was this: Multiple versions of empanadas, Choripán (basically a sausage sandwich), and flan, all accompanied by beer and wine and all enjoyed at a very reasonable price. TripAdvisor guests rate El Sanjuanino very high as do I. I have a hunch it'd be the place I'd return to repeatedly each time I found myself in Recoleta. They have a great wine list as well. The steaks are some of the best I have had, and I love that they bring your steak on a steel plate over a charcoal fire- do not let them take the grill- I love putting the fat on there to render away and then ladle it over my steak- so much better than butter!
