Pups on a leash are welcome to join the fun!
    Katie H.

I grew up chopping down my Christmas tree every holiday season with my family, but hadn't done it since I moved away to college, so I was really excited when I heard that Milwaukee had a tree farm where you could cut your own. I told Geoff that the one thing I wanted to do this holiday season was cut our own tree, so we packed up the car and headed to Buffalo Bill's. Just down the street from where Geoff grew up, he had no idea that this hidden gem of a tree farm even existed. It's incredibly easy to find and on a December Saturday it was buzzing, but not obnoxiously packed. As you walk from the parking lot (they have a special lot for trailers) to the entrance area there are greeters who will show you a map of the property and what varietal tree is located in which area as well as reivew the pricing with you. Santa was also there passing out candy canes to the kiddos! Pups are welcome as long as they're on leash, which we loved!! Next, grab a saw and a plastic sled (never seen this method before, but dragging out the tree on the sled seemed to work well!) and head out to find your tree. The property is well sized and there is signage explaining which trees are in which areas. Many of the trees are tagged with specific pricing, but be mindful of knowing how much $$ if it is not tagged. We walked the property, enjoying the fresh air and searching for our perfect tree. At this time of year it is muddy and a bit slippery in places, so wear appropriate shoes! Once we found our tree LumberGeoff chopped it down and hauled it back to the main entrance. There's an area where tree farm workers will shake and bale (wrap up nice and tight for transport) your tree free of charge (but tips appreciated). They give you a ticket to take up into the trailers to pay. The trailers also have a selection of ornaments for sale as well as local honey from bee hives on the property. Of course we got a bottle of that goodness! $5 for the smaller squeeze bottle. Snacks are for sale while hot chocolate and dog biscuits are complimentary. Tree cost is similar to what we would pay in California- pricy but you are also chopping down a living tree that is going to need to be replanted and grown for years before it's ready for harvest. BUT they do have "sale" lots where trees were tagged at $65 (the rest seemed to range $85+). They do say, you pay for what you get, and we got a beautiful, fresh tree. All in all, if we're still in Milwaukee next Christmas you bet your bottom we'll be back to Buffalo Bills for our tree! Happy Holidays!

They had such an adorable set up in a cute cabin and the photographer was really great with my boys. The bunny was friendly and had a kind face that was welcoming to my toddler twin boys! It was rainy and muddy, but the family that owns the farm was so kind and welcoming! They had baby chicks that the kids could pet and had set up a great egg hunt around the farm! My boys were very interested in the chickens and goats! I definitely hope to visit Godsell Farm in the future and would highly recommend to anyone else as well!

You park in the lot and walk to the Welcome Center to pay the $5 per person admission, which includes the hayride with hay bales (not lame wooden benches with a few strands of straw on it like most places), haunted maze, bread for feeding the farm animals and touring the grounds. Pumpkins range in price from $3 to $6, and you pick them in patch. Animals include horses, ponies, pigs, a llama, a donkey, a cow, turkeys, goats, chickens, and ducks. The staff is extremely welcoming and friendly! Godsell Farm is my new favorite place for pumpkin picking and affordable Fall family fun! It is a MUST visit! You still have time this year yet!

They have acres of produce that they've been growing with an expertise that's impressive. Our group helped with weeding since it was too early in the year to do much else. It had rained the day before but most of the fields we worked in were dry. The last one was not. Definitely pack a spare pair of shoes for the drive home. They do offer bottled water if you don't bring your own and gloves/tools. The staff is super friendly and thanks the group profusely for our hard work. If you're here during the summer, you can stop at the Franklin beer garden down the road for refreshments afterwards.

It's about 75 acres of land that consists of planted plots, fruit bearing trees, fishery, somewhere there are goats and even a park area. They need people, volunteers, to help with the harvesting or gardening, etc. A nice sized group of people can really accomplish a lot for them and for those who need this food. I personally feel that no one should be hungry in this rich country of ours. And I love the fact they grow it - as you know many people on a limited income are cost conscious and the cheaper food is the stuff that comes in a tin can, box, or cellophane and is highly processed! From the ground?! Now this is how you feed the hungry. Our shift was about 3 hours and it's hard work. That may not seem long but the effort you put in - wow I just can't imagine the people who did this for a living all day for most of their lives. We are so dang lucky, y'all. Anyways, please check it out if looking for someplace to volunteer and if you are not averse to some outside work. It feels great having done it! Things to consider: - bringing an extra change of socks/shoes - towel if rainy/wet - baseball capping it - layers, layers, layers! You can always take off but it sucks if you can't add on - sunblock If looking for a spot to eat and/or get a drink after volunteering, The Hideaway is just south on 76th street, is casual and has great food and great staff!

After a whole lifetime in Chicago, I failed to get tenure there and had to start over in Milwaukee. We didn't really know anyone in town, and although I've traveled all over the world, only Chicago has ever really been home. Maria comes from a big Catholic family in small town Western Michigan, and Christmas is a special time for her. Well thanks to the then strong public teacher union presence, my new job paid a living wage, for the first time we were able to afford a house. That house really became a home after we discovered Grandpa Vern's seasonal operation and got our first Christmas tree. Since then, we've found them every year, every December we get a wonderful fresh tree they've grown and brought down from their farm in Northern Wisconsin personally. Our 7 year tradition isn't yet impressive to them, they've been at this for two full generations. Their prices are so much better than what you would get in Chicago, the quality is much better, and they will secure the tree to the roof of your car competently and quickly. They take cash or cheques, no credit cards, the CVS next door has an ATM.
