Walking through Deep Ellum in Dallas, I looked up and there he was--the Traveling Man. Towering…read moreabove the sidewalk, mid-stride, like he was making his way through the neighborhood just like the rest of us. His shiny metal body caught the sunlight, and there was something both futuristic and kind about the way he stood there--one foot forward, a smile on his face, and a little bird perched on his hand like they were old friends. It didn't feel like just a sculpture. It felt like a moment--like he was part of the city, watching over it, maybe even cheering it on. Kids were climbing on the smaller birds at his feet, couples taking selfies, a guy playing guitar on the corner nearby. All of it somehow felt right around him, like he belonged there and always had.

The locomotive transformed into a robot, rising from the ground where three birds stood. There are three different sculptures, which can be viewed as three different parts of the sculpture. 1.Awakening-displays traveling man head emerging from the ground, and it's surrounded by the 3 birds. 2.Waiting on the train-Traveling man is seating on the ground with a guitar, smiling. 3.Walking tall-38ft tall walking man with a bird on his wrist. He is walking to the Deep Ellum train station. Deep Ellum neighborhood developed around the railroad, so there is a deep connection between these two. Easy to stop by and take photo. Pretty cool.

It is part of DFW's Art Program and is the work of Dennis Oppenheim, who made the piece in 2005. It is constructed of aluminum and reminds me a lot of Superman's lair, the Fortress of Solitude. The sculpture is 30 feet high and has an arched tunnel through the center with blue LED lighting overhead. Oppenheim was inspired by the natural form of crystals while creating this piece which depicts crystals of different sizes sprouting up at different angles. Travelers have been known to leave trinkets or foodstuffs in the dark recesses of the tunnel. Don't be surprised if you see half eaten candies, water bottles, rubber bands, paper airplanes, even small stuffed animals. The sculptures fabricators, Studio Six, performs regular scheduled inspections of Crystal Mountain and regular dustings mostly done from an aerial lift using a HEPA vacuum. I really like this sculpture it is one that demands your attention. You cannot miss it. Even though the Sculpture is open to the public. Its viewers are limited to ticketed passengers since it is located beyond the security check point. If you are in terminal D you ae sure to see it. But if you are at one of the other terminals, and have time, I recommend checking this spot out. Fun fact: Oppenheim has a similar piece in Cincinnati called Crystal Garden. It is made of colorful acrylic though and located outdoors.

In the middle of this amazing antique shop is a classic 1950s ice cream parlor. It is a great place to go back in time, look at old treasures, and enjoy tasty ice cream. Ginger and Daniel greeted me warmly when I entered, making me feel very welcome. The mix of beautiful antiques and the nostalgic feel of a traditional ice cream shop created a memorable experience. And the ice cream? It was wonderful! Each flavor was rich, creamy, and full of real taste. I tried a scoop during my visit, but I am already looking forward to returning for a double scoop of their Banana Foster ice cream--a perfect blend of sweetness and spice that left me wanting more. Dillon Depot offers a unique experience where antiquing meets indulgence. Whether you are exploring vintage treasures, enjoying the retro ambiance, or simply stopping by for an incredible ice cream treat, it is a place that makes you want to stay awhile and return again and again. I cannot wait for my next visit!
