Went here on Friday night around 6:15 there was one other table with people eating. That should have been warning enough to get the hell out of there!! We were a table of 9. Our waitress was very good and attentive. When some of the food started coming out of the kitchen that's when things started getting scary! Two people ordered the soup of the day (Pasta Fagoli) both people took there first mouthful at the same time the soup was spoiled both spit it out and sent it back! The rest of the food was not too much better.. My son and I both got the fish fry that was mushy and oily hardly edible... My brother got the turkey dinner. He said the turkey and stuffing was not too bad but the mashed potatoes were horrible and also tasted sour... We have been here quite a few times since they reopened the last few were ok however the sides are almost always terrible! Unfortunately it looks like this landmark will once again be shuttered by poor food quality! I had night hopes for this new owner but unfortunately will not be going back here again!! We made our second trip within a month for dinner. It's about 75 miles, so it's more than just around the corner. Both times the service was great, as was the food. We were most recently there Friday, 10/14/16. On our way home, we started plans to make one more trip up before the weather gets bad. Take some time and try it. We think you'll be pleased. read more

Very very slow service for a time when restaurant was relatively empty. Waiter apologized a lot and reported mixup in kitchen but my family got their food 20 minutes before I got mine and had to wait to watch me eat. I took the rest to go. We asked if we could get something for our troubles and and the waiter was advised a free dessert which we didn't want. He asked us to see the manager. When she came out my husband reported having to wait nearly an hour for our food and she said, "Well it seems it's an hour as of now." Who else sees this as NOT the right reply to an already upset customer (with a restless 4 year old in tow)?? Finally she asked what we would like and husband suggested comping my meal. She did it. She asked if I was taking the leftover. Such rude customer "service" on her part. Food was good though. My kids' sandwiches were slightly burned however. Will we return? I don't know. My family owns a cabin in forestport and that's our getaway place. Places to eat in this town are very slim pickings. There's the Buffalo head and an Italian restaurant just down the road that's it. 9 times out of 10 we eat at the Buffalo head because the food and service is that good. It has a small backwoods friendly atmosphere. And it's never overly busy, occasionally in the summer it picks up. The portions are great I always leave satisfied. For example today I had a buffalo chicken salad and I kid you not it was big enough to feed a family of 4. By the way if you love Buffalo chicken salad I highly recommend there's. They do have a bar in the restaurant. I suppose if I have to knock something about this place it's the selection at the bar. Very slim pickings with beer and hard liquor as well. They meet the basics for your typical backwoods drunk though. read more

Buffalo Head is open again! We had fork-tender prime rib. All dinners come with a house salad, sides and rolls. This restaurant is very family-friendly. It has a complete bar which includes several locally brewed beers on tap along with old favorites. Our server was delightful and knowledgeable about the history of the restaurant and surrounding areas. The service was excellent. We're looking forward to returning soon. read more

I have to agree with Greg G, the Buffalo Head Restaurant is just ok. The food certainly isn't revolting, but it isn't really great either. And for the prices they charge the food should at least be really good. Oh, and their online menu doesn't list any prices. I HATE that! read more

Ron . Mohawk, NY.. Got there about 5 minutes to 12 this past Sunday. The door was locked but the girl on the inside could see us. She would not unlock the door to let us get just inside out of the cold. When see did unlock it, did not invite us in and let the inside door slam in my wife's face. When we did get inside, she looked at us and said table for five. Did not welcome us or any thing else. The waitress was excellent and so was the food. We will go back again, but I hope they get someone else as the hostess. Because this one was very unfriendly. read more

I went here for the first time on a recent trip to Old Forge. My boyfriend and his family have been going for years. I thought the food was really good. Go in knowing what you're getting. It's a family friendly, classic steak and baked potato establishment and doesn't waste time or money on bells and whistles. It doesn't look as though it's been re-decorated for quite some time but has a certain rustic, mountain vibe that goes well with the area. We all had steaks, baked potatoes, salads, and rolls. Here they do not try to fancy up the meal with new variations on old favorites; however, they know how to do the classics well. Tasty! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a good, satisfying steak dinner at a reasonable price. read more

Been here many times and always get decent, reasonably priced meals. Decor really could use some updating, especially booths with sagging seats. Last trip the foliage tour train dropped off several car loads of passengers. So, our quiet dinner turned into something much different. Not enough wait staff this day and we were quickly forgotten after our dinner arrived. So, find out when the trains are coming! We enjoy the pork and turkey dinners, but this time I sensed for the first time that the mashed potatoes were not "real" like usual. Good to see they added beans to the veggie dish. I always get the strawberry shortcake. But, do wish they would use more berries and juice to soak into the real biscuits and use real whipped cream. My wife & I have eaten here on several different occasions and have yet to be disappointed. Good food & service, decently priced.

Will not be returning. The food was sparse, the service was awful and the prices were inflated. Very dissatisfied and disappointed. Went there to celebrate an event and it was quite a let down. Literally needed a microscope to find the mashed potatoes. Stale rolls. Server would not bring bread with the salads, she insisted they come with the dinner. I had to ask her several times. Ate there Sunday May 21, 2017 with 8 friends after kayaking. The food was fabulous!!! I miss the chicken and biscuit Sunday special, but this new chef knows how to cook. The steak was to die for. I was excited when this landmark restaurant reopened. Then I ate there. The chicken and biscuit special contained inedible, rubbery chicken which I could not eat. The manager was informed and very generously reduced the bill for the order by half. The problem is that the whole thing was bad; not half. The prices have gone up quite a bit and that would be reasonable, but not with a reduction in the quality of the food. I have been eatind there off and on for over 40 years but this experience has cost them a customer. There is a bar and grill nearby on Rt 28 that is a better choice. read more

We ate there last Sunday and had the most horrible meal we've ever had in a restaurant. I had the Delmonico steak which was all grizzle thru out the whole thing and my girlfriend had sirloin tips which were also uneatable. Poor Howard who used to own this restaurant would be spinning in his grave. Last Sunday night my husband and I decided to try the Buffalohead despite some bad reviews, because they had new owners and wanted to know if they still had the delicious food the previous owners served. This restaurant has many childhood memories for me since my family has a camp just up the road. We had made reservations but arrived alittle early. The waitress seated us immediately since there were very few people there. We placed our orders along with drinks. The drinks came immediately which was fine. Then we waited and waited for bread, salads etc but never received. The waitress never came back until about 45 min later after my husband asked another waitress if we had been forgotten. Our waitress had other tables by that time that came in after us who had already received their meals by the time my husband said something. After we spoke to the other waitress about being forgotten, our waitress finally comes out with our salads, rolls, water. We asked for the bill for our drinks then left. I left a comment on their Facebook page......very polite. But they deleted it and blocked me from making anymore comments. No apology, no explanation, nothing. I can't comment on the food since we never ate anything. The other waitresses seemed very accomodating. But I'll never go there again nor recommend it. We felt embarrassed and disrespected. read more

We stopped in yesterday while passing through and had a party of 12. We were told by the hostess that they could seat us, but it might be a little slow because our waitress had another "large party" that she was waiting on, but who had already put in their order. Well it took over 30 minutes for her to take our drink order and another hour and fifteen minutes to get our food. When we finally did get it, everything was luke warm, at best. Fries were cold, soup barely warm, hot sandwiches and turkey dinner were cold, etc. when my wife mentioned something to the waitress about the wait the waitress argued with her, telling my wife that we were told it would be slow. I don't think an hour and forty-five minutes to get our food is a "little slow". And worse yet, it was cold. I can understand being slow, but there is no reason that the food then came out cold. If you can't serve a customer, don't seat a customer and to argue with the customer is unacceptable. I understand that the wait isn't the waitresses fault, but something should have been done about it, or they shouldn't have seated us. And to add in an automatic $40 gratuity - just ridiculous. I have been here numerous times and generally have had a good experience, but this time it was horrible. read more

I have always heard good things about the Buffalo Head and I love visiting the Adirondacks. I was severely disappointed with my experience and food, we went on a Friday evening on our way home from Old Forge and noticed the parking lot and restaurant was packed thinking it must be good. First the place was extremely loud, we couldn't hear ourselves talking to each other without having to yell ourselves. The prices were ok but most things were overpriced. My wife ordered the chicken breast which was cooked in white wine and lemon juice because she is dieting, however the server felt it necessary to tell her it was bland. It wasn't that bad just nothing special, and I ordered the broiled scallops thinking they were sea scallops at over $14 for a small plate, I was wrong. They used bay scallops that were cooked horribly, I couldn't even eat them and they were like eating egg whites they were so soft and watery. For a restaurant with such a good reputation I was very disappointed, I would avoid here for better restaurants in the Old Forge area. read more
