Many years ago I read about Bully's in Garden and Gun magazine (think Southern Living back when Southern Living was good). If sounded intriguing so I bookmarked it to try if we ever found ourselves in Jaxson, MS. Turns out we passed through Jackson 4 times in the first 3 months of 2020. Perfect time to stop! Like any amazing local joint, Bully's is tucked into a part of town that's seen better days. It's also a small unassuming building, so you need to know where you're going and be prepared for a crowded parking lot. Inside you'll find some of the best soul food you've ever had. Tender chicken, greens with flavorful pot likker, juicy meatloaf - everything we tried was amazing. We also grabbed a piece of sweet potato pie to go - !!!! Wish we'd gotten 2 pieces because sharing wasn't fun. Anyway, I'd go back to Bully's anytime and would definitely plan a trip opportunity to Jackson to make it happen. read more

Best BBQ and Soul food!! My girlfriend and I popped in on the drive from Memphis to New Orleans and we were blown away. Tender ribs in the most incredible sauce, unbelievable fried catfish, and all of the sides were amazing, especially the collards, yams and cornbread. If you want (cueing Guy Fieri) the real-deal Southern soul food this is place. I've eaten all over the South from the Carolinas to Texas, and Bully's is one of the most authentic and best examples of meat-and-sides, stick to your ribs and good for your soul grub. We got there on the early lunch side (11:30) and had our picks of tables, but don't wait too long, parking lot was packed by noon. Our waitress was the nicest lady, Sandra Dee, who was chatty during the whole lunch. They have lunch plates (with two sides) for $6.50 (a killer deal) as well as daily specials. I was eyeing the pork chops which come either smothered or fried. I asked Sandra Dee which do you prefer, and she told me "why don't you get them fried and then we can smother with gravy?" My kind of answer. For sides went with the field peas, spicy collard greens and cornbread. My wife went with the fried chicken, dark. Food arrived on school cafeteria trays and I was excited. Two large chops sat in front of me glistening in brown gravy. I dug in and they were fantastic. I was worried for the price they would be small or tough; nope. They were quite large and still juicy, not that they needed to be from the gravy which was definitely from scratch. The breading was great too; peppery and didn't fall off like a lot of fried pork chops. Sides were out of this world, homemade as well. Field peas (similar to black eyed peas) were perfectly cooked with some ham; collards were stand out as well. They had some kick, but I still added some Louisiana Hot Pepper Vinegar. And of course mopped up the pot likker with the cornbread. I did grab a bite of my wife's fried chicken...and I know what I'm ordering next. It honestly was one of the better fried chickens I've had. Not greasy, chicken was juicy, and the breading just perfect. The cooks here know what they are doing with the fryer. So from the friendly service (everyone from the cashier to the owner were wishing us a happy new year), price, and honest solid Southern food, this is what you have been looking for in the South. This place is absolutely phenomenal. First, going in understand what it is not. It is not fine dining. It is not hip or "new Southern cuisine." This is a tiny, plastic table cloth over wobbly Formica tables place, with all meals served in styrofoam to-go containters, that looks like it could fall down any moment, with water stains on the ceiling and stacks of boxes stuffed behind the patrons. Nor is it "fast food." If you're in a hurry to get served, go when you have time to savor not just the food, but the ambience and people who patronize this most wonderful establishment. You'll wait a minimum 20+ minutes to be served from the time you give your order. Chances are you'll be able to get into a conversation with the other folks, perhaps ones you're seated next to at one of the large banquet type tables, while you wait. But the food. My God, the food! I swooned over the smothered pork chop that was as tender as warm butter. The turnip and mustard greens were perfect, tender but with some bite to them, redolent of pork. The mashed potatoes were a phenomenon unto themselves. When they offer "roll or corn bread," please order the corn bread. It's real corn bread, which is to say made of real corn meal, not too sweet, and not cake. They won a James Beard award in 2018, and I can see why. This place is magnificent. read more

I have to add to Kipper S review!!!!! A true Jackson, Mississippi staple! It is in Virden Addition, "The Hood" in a small 2 store miniature plaza. It greasy and dusty, can't lie to you - but it is straight up "soulful" period!!!!!!!!! There is a TV stuck on a news station, with a mixed group of people, from the shade tree mechanic, to some stuck buppie that snuck away from the office downtown. There is always some lady in the corner, cuttin' greens, shellin' peas, peeling potatoes and I always tend to sit by them because they going to talk to you - whether it's politics, the weather, some super star scandal or sports and what makes it so bad, I had one hit me over the head with a world event!!!! lol!!!! But that is the beauty of that place, it's real! It keeps you grounded and the food is orgasmic, their prices - oh OMG! You can't beat'em! I mean, whether you have the catfish plate, the oxtails (my favorite), or the smothered fried chicken with mac and cheese and greens and a roll with that sweet tea!!!???? People!!!! What more can I say, I have to be honest, the only time I go is if me and my fiance have a day off from the 8-5! Because once you eat, you have the "idis" and you have to take a power nap. Have you ever had a meal where you eat really slowly because you know you're going to be sad when it's over? This is that kind of place. I've not had food like this since my grandma passed away. Best fried catfish I've ever eaten (moist, flaky but crunchy at the same time and just the right amount of spice). Close to the best fried okra I've ever had (it actually tastes like okra instead of breading). Fried corn--the bomb. String beans--cooked just right. Meatloaf (special on Fridays)--if they put that gravy in a glass I'd drink it. And if that wasn't good enough, blackberry cobbler is on the menu. Every. Day. And homemade lemonade--just the right sour/sweet. I was in Jackson for business--everybody said eat here. Everybody was right. They were so right I came back the next day and ate here again.
