This place should be on your list during any visit to the wineries of Apple Hill. But it's a must if you're here for Passport Weekend! During Passport, Bumgarner pulls out all the stops. Every wine has a food pairing (occasionally this includes a vegan option) and they do a great job of making you feel welcome. The Tempranillo is always good here, as is the hard cider that they produce. If you buy a bottle of cider and bring it back, you get a discount on your refill. This place is in a little compound of wine tasting rooms and a brewery. It's really cute and would be nice to visit all of the different ones. This place has a nice tasting room as well as a large patio with tables. We did the full tasting which has 7 wines. They make a wide variety of wines with grapes all grown in the region. We particularly liked the Viognier and the Tempranillo. Everything was really good though. They also make ciders, which were equally fantastic. I like that they have reusable pop top bottles for wine and cider you can bring back to get filled. I would definitely come back! read more

Please tell no one about this place. It's absolutely wonderful, the staff is friendly and it still feels small town; I'd hate to lose that with crowds. The tasting is up to 12 wines, the whites and reds are delightful. We loved it so much we became members our first time there. This place is a gem! Jennifer Bumgarner was so helpful from beginning to end of our visit! She responded to my emails promptly, prior to the event. She took my reservation and immediately changed it when I asked for her assistance. In person, Jennifer is so kind, friendly and just as helpful! She even checked up on us at the end of the night to see how everything was. The music by Vogel and Cain was so relaxing- a beautiful singing voice and a very talented duo! After the first stop, I was recommended to come here next before the rush. It was right by Jodar and the other wineries. We had found parking without trouble and was parked right away. From the look outside, it looked ok. We went into the building which reminds me of a house/ wine bar feeling. I was served with some delicious squash soup which was hearty and warm like i walked into my grandmas home. I then got a pour of the silver fork Viognier, which paired really well with the soup. Definitely you can find the tropical notes, in the wine with the correct pairing. Then i went ahead and sampled the pinot noir, with bacon fig pizza. The pizza was fresh hot out of the oven, one bite of the pizza and one sip of the pinot noir to wash it down. Its like playing with magic where the correct pairing of food can change the before and after taste of the wine. A very memorable food item i had was the juicy beef lamb mixed meatball. It was dynamite juicy foodgasm good, it was cooked so moist and meaty, with finely chopped caramelized onions inside the meat ball. The meatball was paired with the tempranillo, a favorite of mines. I can't believe i didn't go back for seconds, if i ever see those meatballs again, trust me i will get 2 or 3 servings lol. Another memorable thought that sparked in my mine is the stair swirled stair case in the inside. The upstairs isn't opened but used for storage i believe, but it gives me the home feeling. I do like how they have a fridge which sells cheese, and they carry st. andres cheese, so thats a plus plus. Oh forgot to mention i was here for the ginger cider! Mitch had told me its amaze balls, so i had to get a bottle to go even without trying because this man knows my pallet. I did get a sample of the apple cider from here. It was delicious and not your normal angry orchard apple cider. The apple cider was more crisp dry and sparkling with less sweet. After the apple cider tasting, no doubt did i think twice about bringing the bottle of ginger cider home to pair with a wonderful home cooked picnic brunch, with the wifey. Oh they charge $5 for the bottles, but they are refillable and next time you bring it back, you get a discount off the bottle charge. Overall amazing food pairings, great wines, and comfortable surroundings. Also love the different cheese and bleu cheese pairings with the older aging dessert wines. I had a great time with the wife, and i will be back for more ginger cider, and considering getting a bottle of the apple cider too. What an adorable tiny house-style winery! We were immediately greeted by Brian, owner and winemaker at this fine establishment. He kind of reminded me of a kinder Eric Northman from True Blood. :) He gave us a wonderful journey through his wines. My absolute fave was the Gewürztraminer. It was more like a roussanne with thick buttery brown sugar notes, nothing like most Gewürztraminers I've had. Definitely grabbed a bottle of that and should have grabbed more! Also, this was the first time I've ever liked Pinot Noir! Been all up and down central coast and usually, the tobacco notes kill it for me. But, not here! Fruity and well balanced..we grabbed a bottle of that as well and shared it with friends with some pizza :) Awesome pairing! We came here for the first time recently and it was a magnificent experience! The place itself is incredibly cute! It's an old barn with some original fixtures. It's all wooden and rustic- an adorable spiral staircase and a decent size bar top that wraps around. Inside there was snacks- meat, cheeses, crackers, water, etc... huge perk for those who may forget things. I personally think most winery's should have that. Outside there are wooden bench/tables and umbrellas, a great grassy spot to sit and enjoy our wine and snacks. This aspect was super cute and pleasant, we really enjoyed our stay and got the most out of it. Another note, Tammy was our host and she was truly spectacular. She was definitely part of the reason our time here was so great. She was very welcoming and kind. She was very personable and grounded- her style is friendly, but in a very classy way. She was great company, we learned a lot, and we would go back because of her. The wine selection was phenomenal. Everything I tried, it just got better and better. What a pretty spot... The tasting room is in what looks to be a converted barn. Big tasting counter, that was pretty full when we were there. They have a wide variety of kinds to taste, including a couple of ciders. We stuck with the ciders/whites. All were good. We purchased snacks there (cheese, crackers) and had an impromptu picnic. They gave us a cheese board/cheese knife to use, as well as glasses. I've been to other wineries (not in this area) where you have to purchase glasses, cheese cutter, etc. It was a nice touch that there were complimentary for borrowing. read more

Do you like apples? Well they make a great Apple Cider here, so how do you like dem apples! What a fresh, lively and vibrant venue. This feels like a French cabin tucked away in the mountains of France versus El Dorado. The venue is in a great little cabin that has been a long standing structure, but has been neatly renovated to transform the space into a tasting room, small boutique and grocery store to meet all wine tasting needs. The tasting fee is a modest $5, but they waived it for Passport weekend. They have several wines on draft that you can take in super carafes. See Nicole... She gave a wonderful tasting. Very informative, described the wines very well and is very patient and flexible with us while we would frequently tend to our kiddos. She even gave us some sidewalk chalk to occupy our busy bees while we enjoyed the wines. We tasted the Apple/Pear Cider, Marsanne, Chardonnay, Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, Tempranillo and the 07 and 08 Cabernet Sauvignon. There wasn't a poor wine in the bunch. The cider is crisp and refreshing like a champagne, the other reds all well executed, but the Cabernet Sauvignon was the stand out. Having tasted at 10 or so Napa wineries in the past couple weeks, the 08 Cab here was better than the 08 Napa vintage Cabs I have tasted. We joined the wine club and grabbed a super carafe of Mourvedre. This place is the new stand out for El Dorado wineries. read more

One of the many wineries in apple hill area I have tried. This place sits next to a small business strip mall. Just follow the sign to behind the mall. This is a cabin converted wine tasting room. Staff is pleasant and prompt to helping. Five offerings between two wineries for five dollars. A menu with short descriptions. Most of the choices are mediocre for my taste. We elect to purchase Gewürztraminer wine which comes in a refillable bottle for initial 20. If you return for a refill the bottle discounted is 15. There is a wine club, but nothing we consider here. Wine was okay. We will come back to refill for the price. The wines are priced with the other wineries. Good: service, mediocre wine. Bad: location, small selection for price. Same day as a bad experience at a nearby winery, we came here. What a difference. My only complaint was the day we were there it was a bit too cold to be tasting outside. The wines here are really good. I like Barbera, Tempranillo, Mourvedre/Monastrell (they have a good GSM) and good blends. And the El Dorado/Amador area is good for this kind of stuff. (I honestly don't know if the Mourvedras they use in the GSMs are grown nearby). Did I love everything? No, not everything is MY thing, but I can't say anything we tasted sucked. Bought a few bottles and were pleased to enjoy at home. Came back this spring, a little warmer, daylight saving had started. Wine was still excellent. Bought a case and joined their club. (I live in Sac, not that far away). This is their tasting room in Camino. I have never been to their winery in Fairplay. read more

I was recently on a wine tasting day trip with my wife and decided to check this place out. I did enjoy my experience here but and ended up buying a couple of bottles of wine. The only reason I did not give five stars is I wished they offered wines with a bolder flavor to them. The tasting room is clean. The staff is knowledgeable. And the pricing is not bad. This was one of the last stops in Apple Hill. We went there because they carried hard cider. Small selection of pretty good wines. I honestly should try this place again since it was towards the end of the day and I was exhausted. Like most of the tasting rooms in the area, it's pretty. Bumgarner is a cute space and within stumbling distance to a couple neighboring wineries and a decent thrift store. I feel like this is one of those "we just didn't mesh" situations. I'm a big oaky and buttery girl and the wines I found here weren't to my liking, although I could see someone else really enjoying them. They were very fruity and flavorful yet dry. The place is cute and the owner/winemaker/pourer knows his stuff. Most of the wines here are poured on tap which was very unique and cool. The space is a-ok and has a nice outdoor area although there are definetely better views at other spaces. There's also a 5 dollar tasting fee if you don't decide to buy anything. I was teetering between three and four stars but I'll chalk it up to the fact it just wasn't my taste. Worth a stop in. read more

The boyfriend and I stopped by Bumgarner Winery after first visiting Crystal Basin Cellars. The two wineries are within walking distance from one another, so you could say it was an impromptu visit. We walked in not really knowing what to expect, but, being the Giants fan that he is, my boyfriend decided we should check it out in honor of Bumgarner :P The outside area was super cute! The summer greenery and bright sun made for an exceptional picturesque location. The winery itself is a house-like type place with a small bar area. The tasting fee was $5 per person, which could be applied towards the purchase of a bottle of wine. In these scenarios, I typically do end up buying a bottle of wine to offset the tasting fee, whether I liked the wine or not. So, admittedly, even though I did not enjoy any of the wines I tasted, I ended up buying a bottle anyway. I neither liked nor disliked this place. It was a clean, bright winery with a cute outdoor area, but the wine was mediocre and unremarkable to me. I probably wouldn't visit again. read more
