The major feature of Starfield Vineyards is obviously their vineyards and gardens, but this memorial weekend, their pizzas were a highlight!! My personal favorite was the Artichoke Florentine because the mint pesto is so refreshing for the summer. I also appreciate the low alcohol options, as it allows me to join in the fun despite my alcohol sensitivity. The vineyards and gardens are spectacular as usual; I highly recommend the main lake trail/loop for the shade it offers during the hot summer. The turtle pond is secluded and pleasant, but it's further and lacks shade, so I recommend bringing a parasol. read more

I took my husband out on the town for his birthday, and Starfield was one of our first stops--what a fabulous choice. The ambiance, the guided experience, and the overall vibe were exactly what I had hoped for. Our waitress was exceptional--knowledgeable, incredibly friendly, and she made us feel right at home. We truly couldn't have started his birthday any better. As for the food, I was a bit bummed that there wasn't a lunch or more robust meal offering. It slightly diminished the overall poshness of the experience, as we would have loved something beyond charcuterie while enjoying the wine. That said, we still had a wonderful time--and even became members--so that says a lot. I do hope they expand their food options in the future. Stopped in at Starfield Vineyards on our way up to Lake Tahoe. We were pleasantly surprised they had a substantial new pizza menu available and great wines. Today was my third or fourth visit to Starfield Vineyards. I missed their custom of greeting you with a glass of sparkling when you enter their tasting room. I was also disappointed to hear that the kitchen had been closed as a recall, how incredible our meals were in the past. That being said, atmosphere, environment and views cannot be beaten. I love that there's walking paths to explore their vineyards, and of the lake with the lily pads. We enjoyed the charcuterie plate however were charged extra when we asked to add the Manchego cheese which we'd had on the last visit. Joe was our server and he seemed well educated with all the wines. My favorite wine of the pouring was Big Canyon. When we reached the lake we learned it was National Grenache Day (who knew?) so were each poured a nice taste of their Grenache. read more

We've been to Starfield Vineyards a handful of times now, and I don't think I've ever had a wine here that I didn't like--every pour is solid! They used to serve food (which was amazing, RIP), but thankfully they still offer their cheese boards (which are 10/10). They've also got a small but mighty selection of snacks (cheese, crackers, etc..) you can buy to build a little spread. The views are a whole experience on their own--especially if you can sit at the member pavilion overlooking the water, which is super scenic and peaceful. Starfield continues to be such a lovely spot with friendly service, even with the food changes. As long as they keep pouring delicious wine, we'll definitely keep coming back! read more

Was introduced to this winery after taking a viticulture class and having their Cinsault. Lovely strawberry notes and a was really impressed with this single varietal that is typically a blending grape. Located at an elevation of 2,400 feet, the winery grounds themselves have plenty of parking, maintained walking trails and a lovely pond area It looks like there is a space for concerts outside. The day I visited they had a guitarist playing cover tunes outside. There is covered outdoor seating as well as seating on the lawn area. Many of the wines are estate wines - there are 31 acres featuring 17 varietals. The tastings range from $20 - $25 and they even have three low alcohol wines at 8% ABV, those tastings are $5. One of the highlights for me during this tasting was the 2021 Starbeam Cabernet ($85) using Napa grapes - smooth, dark red fruit flavors. Shout out to Savannah who made our visit memorable. I booked a reservation for a seated tasting for four on a Sunday, and overall, the experience started off well but ended as a disappointment. My group arrived early and enjoyed lunch before our reservation. Staff were friendly, greeted us with a glass of blanc de blanc, and made us feel welcomed. I had high hopes, especially with how delicious lunch was. We ordered the Thai peanut salad, porchetta banh mi, cheesy monkey bread, and four rosè Jell-O shots. The appetizer was small, and I'd recommend skipping in the future. As for the seated tasting, I was extremely let down by the lack of attentiveness from our server. I brought friends that had never been wine tasting before, and I hoped that the flight would be served all at once. Given that the pours were periodic, there was too much down time and our reservation felt like it was dragging on. I didn't feel confident that our server was knowledgeable and she did not share much about the wines that were being poured. She forgot which flights we had ordered and even charged my card twice, which she acknowledged as a mistake. I made a reservation on a Saturday morning and they were able to fit us in on the same day! The vineyards are pretty big and they have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. The covered patio area is where our reservations were seated but I would have preferred to be in the lawn area. That's for walk-ins only. The space is so big, you probably don't need a reservation during the fall days. You can also walk through their property but they close it around sunset because they have animals that roam the property after dark. Scary! I enjoyed their tasting experience and it was affordable. We had a few different flights between us and were poured the wrong or a duplicate wines a couple times. Came in yesterday with a group of ladies for a birthday celebration. We saw a posting on Facebook about live music and food trucks. The grounds are beautiful, the musician was great and the wine was delicious. They did not have a food truck but they did have cheese and charcuterie boards for sale. We brought cupcakes for the birthday celebration and we were not allowed to bring them in but they did keep them inside so they didn't have to sit in the car and melt. The downside is that if you're not a wine club member you are going to know it and feel it. I would think that they would view every customer as an opportunity to become a member. After spending a few hours here and being treated as a "non wine club member" we all agreed that none of us would become a member. We had one employee that took care of us and was fantastic! We made sure to let her know how thankful we were and the rest of the staff could learn from her. read more

We made a last minute reservation at Starfield on a lovely Saturday afternoon and had a great time. We were greeted right when we entered and were seated at a table on the grass. Our host was very knowledgeable and gave great tips for food pairings as we tasted. There was also food menu which we didn't order from, but likely will next time. There were several wines on the menu and they were having a sale, so our guy poured us a couple of extra tastes to see if there was anything we liked for purchase. Another new location we visited for the first time, during our last trip to Apple Hill. My girlfriend wanted to visit Starfield Vineyards & Winery on this trip, as she'd come to recently hear about it. After arriving we briefly looked around the inside area at the different wines, and then were taken to the patio area for wine tastings. Once in the back I noticed how nice the outside area was, especially at that time of year. It wasn't cold just yet, so in the late afternoon it was still enjoyable out while in a short sleeve. There were several people dinning, which we were told is preferable to do so by reservation; but not mandatory. It was explained it was better by reservation just in case you did a drop in and the were fully booked. I think I noticed some people say you could only buy reservation, so there might've been some confusion on their part. While at the wine area my girlfriend tried several samples of Starfields different wine selections. And ultimately chose two different whites to take home that day. During the tastings we were given Starfield membership brochure, to more the discounts one can get from being a member. If you're into wine it's definitely something to check out if interested. This was our second time at Starfields Vineyard and it absolutely did not disappoint. This is also our second time going to apple hill and I feel like we can't go there without going wine tasting. I had forgotten to make reservations earlier in the week online so I called them right when they opened day of to see if they had any availability. The man on the line was polite and stated they had a few so we got in around 3:20. They have plenty of parking and the grounds are simply stunning. We got there a bit early so they told us we could wait outside and grab a tasting of sparkling wine and later proceeded to sit and wait for our reservation. Once we were sat, our server provided us with 3 tasting options and most of us chose the favorite and 1 person chose the light. We also ordered 2 charcuterie plates, 1 meat and 1 cheese because the meat brought only 1 cheese. Needless to say, they were amazing. Quality cheese, Jams, meats, crackers, etc. Our server was amazing. Unfortunately we don't remember her name, maybe Lauren?... anyways, she was super thorough, giving us background and recs for apple hill. Pro: Nice wine, food is very good. Con: They are very strict and inflexible on their 6 person policy. We had a group of 6. Separately 2 friends had booked and they had put them in a different area. It was 100F+ that day so there was hardly anyone there. We politely asked if the 2 friends could join. They said no because it would overwhelm the server. I asked if once our friends had ordered and been served they could bring their food and drinks over to sit with us (so as not to cause the server more work). Again no. Not sure I would go back. By the time we did order we decided to get appetizer food with it as to not wait longer. Our food was ready within minutes. The guy asked if we'd gotten our wine yet so he could take our buzzer and we said no. So he asked this coworker currently pouring wine to which she rolled her eyes and said she'd get to it when she gets to it and walked inside. Will not return after that experience. We have been members for about 6/7 years. Starfield is a beautiful setting probably the best in the area. We enjoyed our visit and the staff did a good job. Their wines are excellent. However the recent changes which eliminated the kitchen and meal service was/is a significant disappointment. The menu offerings were extremely good and whilst food trucks are fine it is not the same. It seems like the concerts have also been eliminated. Perhaps they were initially over ambitious but the previous vibe which made us weekly visitors is sadly gone. read more

This is the cutest little winery with the most delicious food! I HIGHLY recommend adding this to your Apple Hill stop. The winery property is absolutely gorgeous with plenty of photo opp worthy views. They have a great lunch menu and lunch is served on their seated lawn area that is nestled under some trees that provide decent shade during warmer weather days. The staff are super friendly and really seem like they enjoy working here. This winery is also very dog friendly! Our server was friendly and knowledgeable....but our tasting experience was marred by the amount of time it took to taste each varietal.... She was taking care of another customer which was fine... however the other employee behind the bar just stood there and didn't ask if we needed anything... This happened between each varietal that we tried.(Am unacceptably long wait) I know that each staff member is assigned a customer when they arrive and are expected to take care of them.... however when that employee is busy.. other employees who are not.... should step up and help so not to ruin the tasting experience for the customer. Felt routine but felt a little weird: One staff person (great customer service and a wealth of knowledge!) helped me out--I really liked that person and she was doing great*, but once our conversation mostly was done, another person literally tagged her out and took over and told the first person to grab my order from where ever they grab it from. If the staff gets commission or credit from sales, the second person is a shark! A little immoral, definitely not a team player, but they closed the deal with no idle chat, and got the commission (if there is a commission) from the hard work of the first person. Unless this is the office process where a 2nd person always ends up finalizing a purchase and delegating the first person to grab the order, then I guess it's their norm. read more

The setting is one of the nicest in the area. It was a beautiful spring day and it was perfect for sitting outside. One of the nice things about their outdoor seating is that you can sit in the sun or shade. The service was informative and enthusiastic about their wines. They have four different tasting choices so my wife and I chose two different ones to see the variety of wines they offered. Right off the bat, their Chardonnay blew us away. The Santa Cruz Mountain Chardonnay is as good as it gets. While the rest of the offerings were good, this was outstanding. Another bonus here is their discounting if you but four bottles. 25% off is a definite incentive to go for it, which we did. I'd highly recommend stopping by if you're in the neighborhood! read more

But like other people have said, the reservation system and bizarre rules for different experiences is perplexing and ultimately led me to not renew my membership. To make a reservation you fill out a form online and then they email or call you back. It feels archaic and I wish they could just let you book directly online. Also, they don't answer the phone if you call them. They have many different "experiences" with bizarre rules. If you do a tasting you can't order food off the lunch menu. If you sit for lunch you can't do a tasting. No parties over 6 people even if you sit separately. I really don't understand. I shared this feedback with management because I want to like the place and was told there's a lot more that goes into these experiences that I wouldn't understand. I know when I go to tons of other wineries, it's not so complicated with bizarre rules. Why is it that so many other wineries can be hospitable and welcome guests with ease, but Starfield has to be difficult? Worst experience I have ever had at a winery. Savanah was extremely rude from the minute we arrived. I had a friend on a knee scooter from surgery and needed to get her sat down before ordering and she said we couldn't sit at one of the tables. They were for reservations only. This was a MONDAY and only one table had guests. All other tables were open and no reservations. She said rules were rules and said we had to sit on the lawn area. It was freezing that day and not ideal for a scooter to be pushed across the wet lawn. literally no one was there. After i ask for a refund on a 3 person flight and I told her we would never return and I said I would be talking to her manager about not treating someone with a handicap properly, she allowed us a table but said we would have to move if anyone makes a reservation. She was such a little "B". I will be telling all my friends about our experience. SAVANAH should be fired!! Oh and btw it took her 20 minutes to get our wine flights. We proceeded to go to lava cap winery and had the best time. They brought in a table so we could sit inside where it was warm and my friends handicap was accommodated. We had wine and food. Starfield's patio/outdoor area is absolutely gorgeous! It is a great winery to stop in at for a tasting/lunch break. Reservations are highly encouraged, if not required. I felt that their menu pricing was a little high but to be expected at a winery. I loved the food! So good. Their wine sampling was nice as they offered a wide variety of wines. Their pourer did a great job of explaining each wine and its history. I was a recent member of this winery. We joined because of one great experience with John and his knowledge of the wine. Funny enough the best wine they had used Napa grapes! Which they don't even source anymore Napa grapes. Thereafter all downhill. First off they want you to book reservations. But they don't answer their phones when you call! As club members we shouldn't have too. We should come in and be taken care of for our patronage. Second off they don't allow children on the patio area and give you hell if your child even steps foot in the area. But they allow dogs! Wtf! It's not family friendly. Thirdly, the energy beyond John experience with "workers" is not positive. The staff treat you like they are doing you a favor. My husband is a Napa native. The entire vibe and facility they are thinking beyond their britches. This is El Do county let's be real. Over it and we cancelled our membership. I do not recommend this winery! Beautiful vineyard! Lots of walking paths, a few ponds to relax by, lots of plants and trees are labeled. They plan to do things like yoga by the pond, a fly fishing class, private dinners on the deck. I don't drink wine. So I'm here to review the food. The chef is fantastic! I hope he gets free reign to totally vamp up the menu. His dishes are so tasty and perfectly enhances all the fresh produce of the season. Smoke salmon and trout egg tart was delicious. Buttery tart and fresh seafood. Visually appealing too. The burrata salad was very fresh. Pistachio and pesto adds a nice texture. Spring salad was so nice and herbaceous! My smoked salmon salad with the naan and the fried soft boiled egg was so light but filling in a non heavy way. I also got a side salad with bacon and they use real bacon that's perfectly cooked and crispy! Tomato soup was ok. It's elevated tomato soup. The other dishes stole the show. Desserts were nice but I am more of a savory person. I will be on the lookout for future menu changes and will be bringing everyone I know who's visiting Placerville.
