This was a really cute winery in Placerville and the wine was delicious! I was a little disappointed that they didn't waive the tasting fee with purchase of a bottle. I didn't realize it until we left which I would've probably not bought the bottle, especially being in the industry. However, the wines were nice and I ended up purchasing the GSM. Will I come back? We were on our way to another orchard and decided to stop by this winery for a tasting! The main building had a cute patio right outside that overlooks their vineyard. We ordered at the bar inside and then the wines were brought out to us on the patio. It took longer than expected to get our flights, and then we were a bit disappointed that the sommelier didn't spend much time telling us about the wines. She brought them out and told us what each wine on the flight was, then left and we never saw her again. We've had several amazing tasting experiences in wine country where the sommelier tells you many more details about the wines including where on the property the grapes are grown, how it is made, and what different notes we will taste in each wine. It was a pretty basic explanation and we didn't feel that it was very personable despite it being a slow weekday. We ordered two tastings but all the wines were brought out in small carafes, we couldn't tell if each one held enough wine for one of us or both of our tastings combined. This wasn't ever explained either, so we assumed it was for both of us to share. We still enjoyed having our wines on this beautiful property, and we were able to have our baby with us which was nice. We weren't very impressed with the wines themselves and did not have any favorites that we needed to purchase bottles of. It is $10 for a glass or a tasting which was quite the deal. What a beautiful place to taste some wine. The views were ever so beautiful. The way they served the 6 wine tasting was unique where we could control the amount each one of us got without the staff having to come out for each glass. Nice touch. The only thing that didn't allow me to give them a 5-star review was the wine itself. The Pinot Gris was exceptional, so we bought a couple of bottles. The rest was merely okay. Review #101: Lewis Grace indeed has great tasting red wines, possibly the best on Apple Hill based on a few other people's recommendations. You choose either the 3 white wine flight or the 3 red wine flight for $10. The 3 tastes are generous, totaling a full glass of wine. In early August 2022, my red wine tasting consisted of the 2020 Grenache, 2020 Syrah, and 2019 Trevor Grace Cabernet Sauvignon, which were all very drinkable. The Grenache and Cabernet Sauvignon were both award winning and delicious. The tasting fee is not applicable towards the purchase of a wine bottle. When you purchase 3 bottles, you receive a complimentary, attractive black wine carrying bag with the Lewis Grace Winery logo. I went about a half hour before closing. Every customer was seated on the outdoor patio, which has a view of the vineyard. Servers were polite and happy to explain the wine tasting and the history of Lewis Grace, who was a Revolutionary War soldier and patriot. The winery is now owned and run by Steve Grace. His brother Trevor Grace has a masters degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis. The two brothers are in healthy competition against each other to produce the best tasting wines and to win awards! There didn't seem to be an option to include tip with my credit card bill. I was instructed to go indoors to ask the bartender to break a $10 bill. I I thought it was a bit presumptuous to be handed two $5 bills, but that bartender was not my direct server. I did ask for and receive ones. You can order chocolate, wine wafers, or gourmet popcorn to accompany your wine tasting. There is a gift shop inside the building. I would go for the view and relaxed atmosphere. Just a tip though, they do not waive the $15 tasting fee with a bottle purchase. While staying at a bnb in the area we were recommended to go here. We got 2 free tastings with card from our bnb. It was so beautiful there. Nice patio, lots of shade, views of the vineyard, just a really relaxing and chill vibe. They weren't crowded but had a steady stream of tasters come through. I can confidently say that Lewis Grace has the best tasting wine that I've had on Apple Hill thus far. I enjoyed almost every single wine that I tasted here, and they rank strong in both red and white wine categories. However, the minimal interaction between the wine stewards left much to be desired from a service standpoint. Lewis Grace was actually recommended to me by the sommeliers from Via Romano Winery just down the road. When I approached the winery, there was a sign out front that casually read "seat yourself". I'm not used to wineries being this casual since COVID, so I still waited until I saw someone to confirm. Once I got the okay, I sat myself right in front of their beautiful vineyards. Because, who doesn't want to sip wine while taking in those vineyard views? You already know! There are two different tasting flights; Their "Crisp & Complex" and their "Bold & Balanced". The Crisp & Complex flight features a taste of their Pinot Gris, Viognier, and Pinot Noir while the Bold & Balanced flight features a taste of their Syrah, Five PM red blend, and Cabernet. Each flight is $10 and you can also buy wine by the glass here. Both flights sounded good, so I decided to try them both. One of the wine stewards delivered the first wine flight but gave no explanation about the wines. I don't know... I guess I'm used to the old school way of tastings where you have a sommelier who's actually pouring your wines and telling you about them. But, even a simple explanation about what I'm tasting will do. I know that COVID has pushed us all into this limited contact atmosphere, but this was an element that I was gravely missing during my tasting here. Nevertheless, the wine truly spoke for itself. Whoever named these tasting flights were right on the money. The Pinot Gris and Viognier were indeed crisp and quite complex. I loved the strong floral notes in their Viognier and their Pinot Gris was wonderfully crisp and refresher. Both I'd categorize as the ultimate summer sippers. The Pinot Noir was lighter bodied with a slightly smokey finish. The Crisp & Complex flight was definitely my favorite of the two. Their reds were still tasty and of course a lot bolder. I enjoyed the spicy acidity of their Syrah. The only wine that I wasn't a huge fan of was their Cab. It was just a tad bit heavy on the leather, but I'm sure a food pairing would bring out a better flavor. Their patio is spacious and comfy. All of the tables are covered by umbrellas which was perfect because the sun seemed to really love me that day. You can literally walk out and touch the vineyards. In fact, I played in them for just a bit and took a closer look at the wine grapes. During this time of the season, they're dark and ripe. The wine stewards (since I didn't have a dedicated one) did stop by a few times to see if I was okay, but that was basically it. I think this spot would be good for groups of people who want to just chill out and have a picnic. I did see a few parties doing this. One downer is that they don't waive the tasting fee if you buy bottles. They only waive the fee for their members. In this wine region, that's just a bit hard for me to accept. I can see this in Napa and Sonoma, but on Apple Hill?! This is not the first time that I've experienced this before out here though, so I guess it's becoming a thing. NOT A WINE DRINKER .... but I loved it here! You walk in and it's a really large interior. They have $5 tastings per person and it was totally worth every single penny. There were 6 wines for tasters: 2018 Pinot Gris, Voignier, 2016 Pinot Noir, Barbera, 2014 Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon. We walked out with their famous FASHIONABLY LATE and 2016 BARBERA. The second I had a tasting of the Fashionably Late dessert wine, I was in love. Highly recommend. The gentleman behind the counter (I'm so sorry I forgot to ask for his name) was so incredibly patient and helpful. Our glasses were never empty for more than 30 seconds and the bar was full of small parties! Since I am not a wine drinker, being at a winery is not very enjoyable. Thanks to him, I actually enjoyed myself at the bar making small talk over some crackers and tasters. What topped off the experience was that as he was pouring the dessert wine, he stated "You will for sure love this one!". Many wines here to try as two brothers show off their stuff. I think for the sitting out and being on a high knoll kind of setting this winery has an EXCELLENT location. The wines are a bit mixed for me, most of them don't finish all that super well. The two that rock my world here and are 5 star (for me of course) is their two Grenaches and the Tempranillo. Great varietal offerings on those. For full disclosure I am a Grenache collector and collect Grenache from all over the foothills even Southern Oregon so I know this varietal well and it is, what brings me back to this location time and again. However I tend to be very selective where I join Club and I would not join Club here to many of the wines are just not that spectacular. Overall good choice on a wine tour in our area. But El Dorado has a lot of good some amazing wineries. Service here is amazingly friendly and professional and there are a ton of cool artifacts to enjoy in the tasting room. read more

The rain finally stopped and we decided to head up to Placerville for a nice early afternoon of wine tasting. I have driven by Grace Patriot many times during trips to apple hill and based on the website the wines looked really good. We made reservations the day prior but based on the lack of people I don't think we needed them. They have a great patio with an open view of the vineyards, hillside and other landscaping features. I ordered the white and my wife had the red wine flight. Overall some good wines but I lean towards the whites for this tasting. The Pinot gris was my favorite and would pair well with white fish or poolside during the summer. The reds were a bit too fruit forward for us but that's typically what you will find in el dorado county. Good experience and highly recommend checking them out! read more

Definitely some of the very best wines in the area, but the service left a bit to be desired. If Yelp allowed half stars, this would be a definite 3.5 experience for me. I've heard the wines here were amazing- they win all kinds of awards after all- but I must admit that they need to work on their atmosphere. We walked in to a nearly empty tasting room in the middle of the afternoon and weren't greeted at all from any of the employees pouring. Strange, especially for Apple Hill which is known for being small town friendly. So we walked around a bit, checking out the beautiful tasting room and admiring the great views of the vineyard before giving it a second shot standing at the bar. This time a girl who looked barely old enough to drink wine asked us bluntly if we wanted glasses. She poured, and sometimes even whispered out the name of the wine, but little else. Luckily the menu had notes for each wine so we could guide ourselves since she would pour without a word and then disappear. Odd. The wines here are truly remarkable. As a lover of reds, it's not easy for me to find a white that I tolerate, much less have to own, but their Chardonnay with soft notes of banana cream was simply delicious. The huge banner proclaiming that their Cabernet Sauvignon was voted Best in California and 98 points was a must try for me. Girl behind the counter said they don't open it for tasting, but lucky for us the winemaker happened to walk in and hear me pleading for a taste so I got to try it. Absolutely STUNNING. If you are a Cab drinker you must try this!! Peppery, bold, and hands down better than any cab I've had out of Napa lately. I could go on... The winemaker took over and turned the experience. He explained how they are mainly an estate grown vineyard and even showed us his antique cider press from the 1860s that has been restored. What a surprise, and I'd never have gone here if it weren't for a friends need to pick up some wine for one of her friends. The wine was reasonably priced, tasted good, and served by very nice people. I left with a Tempranillo, and others in our group chose the cab. They've got a Petite Sirah, but they weren't pouring it the day we were there, and so we didn't get to taste it. Everything was so good though, that, when reflecting, we should have just picked up that bottle as well. It's hard to find anything wrong with Grace Patriot Wines. The tasting room has a great combination of modern and classic with a very convenient location along Camino Road right in the middle of Apple Hill. Parking is ample, but mostly off road. I passed by them many times over the years and have not stopped in for a while. The exterior looks like a classic Italian villa with a large and spacious modern interior. The thick walls make it more temperate inside but wreak havoc with wireless reception. Several windows allow the great sweeping view to tempt you more than the wine. The winery has a typical menu for the region with a balance of Rhône and Bordeaux varietals in El Dorado style. Tasting fees are waived with purchase, and a large patio is perfect in warmer months to split a bottle with friends. Stopping here may be tough during peak seasons both for traffic and distracting you from more Apple pie! The wine may be an afterthought in such a nice place, but Grace Patriot Wines is a great stop when visiting the area. read more

I tasted an additional seventh called the Fashionably Late Dessert wine, which was good. I thought that the service was excellent, which made my experience tasting there very pleasant. Delicious wines, a beautiful outside patio with EPIC views of the vineyards, and great hospitality...I will definitely be coming back if I'm wine tasting again in the Apple Hill area! This place was beautiful with delicious wine! I'm going to be honest, I'm not a wine fanatic. I'm just a stereotypical millennial living on a budget. So maybe this review won't resonate with everyone. We came here on a Monday (December) afternoon and the place was quiet! The parking lot was empty but there were only a few parking spots. I can't imagine where/what parking is like on the weekends. There was only one other couple in the tasting room with us. The tasting room is decent size and cute inside. They have a gorgeous patio (not covered) that overlooks the winery. Wine tastings were $5 per person and were waived if you bought a bottle. So if you bought two tastings and only one bottle, you would still have to pay $5 for the second tasting. Great place to taste some wine and take some great pics . read more

Experience the GOOD,the BAD and the UGLY. I have visited this winery several times and each time in the past have been very pleased. On this visit however I came away veery disappointed, not with their wines, but with other factors. THE GOOD - Their wines are excellent and medium priced. The ambiance outside is most enjoyable with lovely views. Our server (outside of course) was knowledgeable, courteous and very friendly. The setting for tastings was very professional, with each wine presented in a miniature carafe for customers to pour into their glasses. THE BAD - Wine club discounts are mediocre, as are case prices. Wine tasting was not available for a couple of the wines I wanted to purchase, so I passed , although my wife insisted on purchasing one of them, an Albarino, a somewhat rare Argentinian wine. THE UGLY - Pricing Practices. Most wineries, to the best of my knowledge, and all other wineries in the area allow a cancellation of the Tasting Fee when a bottle is purchased. This was the case when I last visited the winery a year ago. The price for a wine flight of 6 wines is $!0.00. My wife and I agreed to split our tastings since she is a very light drinker. When presented with our bill, however, we were charged for two tastings not one. Unfortunately this winery has now fallen dramatically among my preferences in the area. I first tired Grace Patriot Wines about three years ago. I have never been a fan of Zin, and still wouldn't consider myself one; however, when I tried Grace Patriot's Zin I thought it was DELICIOUS! A flavor that had stuck in my mind... so when deciding how to celebrate my twenty-sixth birthday, my friends and I decided to go wine tasting in Placerville. I remembered the wine, but had to ask a friend for a reminder on the winery's name. This past Saturday was a warm one! My friends and I visited a couple of wineries before passing by Grace Patriot and immediately turning around for a visit. The outside was very quiet and had a dirt parking lot where a barn sat. We followed the sign towards the tasting room and it was BEAUTIFUL - rusted corrugated metal lined the facade of the building and it was such a gorgeous backdrop. Inside this family run winery, there was one other couple tasting when we were warmly greeted by Trevor and Bea. They had several wines they were offering that day, two whites, a rose, and several reds. We loved each of the wines we tried which is a huge accomplishment for the varying tastes within our group! We each bought a bottle of wine, a Pinot Gris (for the white wine drinker in our group), the Hip Hip Rose (with a super cute label and refreshing taste), and for me, the 2008 Pinot Noir which was one of the last bottles from their last case. I was also a really big fan of their Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. We were told there are a few small wine shops that sell their wine, but it sounds like it is mainly only available for purchase at the winery. Wines ranged from about $16 - $30 a bottle and any one of them would be a great addition to a meal or a nice afternoon/evening. The tasting room is open Thursday-Sunday from 11am - 5pm. A few friends and I finally found a weekend where we could all meet up for tasting but it unfortunately coincided with the busy Passport Weekend. I called Grace Patriot ahead and was assured they were doing regular tasting in addition to the event. The lady on the phone was incredibly nice and helpful! Unfortunately we did not have a great experience at the winery. They seemed overwhelmed at our group size (9) even though the bar was half full and there was plenty of space. (Passport was held in the barn, and the tasting room was mellow) During our tasting a gentleman employee came by and put a few members of our party on the spot, describing the cost of having large groups come for tasting. He said normally they charge a fee for large groups who want to taste. I heard him repeat the speech to another couple in our group while he wrapped up their bottle of wine. I can respect that offering tastings is a cost and if there had been mention of a tasting fee up front we would have still tasted. I talked up this winery beforehand due to its Yelp reviews! Unfortunately it was a little awkward and embarrassing to invite friends tasting and have them get a mini-lecture. Hopefully this was a one-off since they had 2 weekends of Passport to attend to, but I doubt any of us will be back to determine whether that is true. read more

We came in a few weeks ago, about 20 minutes before closing just to see if they might squeeze us in for a tasting as we were on our way to a dinner at a different winery but had a bit of time to kill. They were incredibly welcoming and accommodating, we didn't feel rushed at all. The wines were AMAZING, we especially loved the Syrah. We will definitely be back to do a more leisurely visit and pick up some more bottles! So here's the breakdown: Pros: Great views Beautiful vineyard Friendly staff Cons: The wine just wasn't that good. For all it's awards, I honestly only liked maybe 1 or 2 of the 7 varieties they poured for me. These wines are approachable. Meaning they are probably pretty good for people who are relatively new at wine tasting. I found all of them to be very fruit forward, high sugar content (they tasted very sweet to me), and had little to no finish. Remindes me of a standard American Riesling or another cheaper table wine. Don't get me wrong, they were better than a cheap table wine, but not by much. If you want to taste complex wines with a variety of notes, earthy, oaky, a long and smooth finish, etc, I wouldn't go here. If you want to enjoy a nice day outside on a lovely patio and enjoy sweet wines, this is probably the place for you. Ultimately, the best wine is the wine you like, so try it. Tastings are pretty cheap, but I honestly wouldn't pay more than $20 for a bottle of any of these. read more

I asked our friendly server what she'd suggest to go with my meal and she offered a hearty Grace Patriot cab. I was unbelievable...I took a photo of the label so I wouldn't forget this fine wine. As I sipped the wine, I read the label and about fell of my stool when I found out that Grace Patriot is only 20 minutes from our house! So soon we ventured up to the Winery and had a full tasting and we loved ALL the wines. Over many visits we have gotten to know everybody by first name basis; they are more like friends that we've know for years. In the warm season, it's so much fun to set outside and take in the view. They offer some music events that were really fun. We look forward to this coming season. Our very very fav's are the Tempranillo and the Cab Sauvignon! So this was our second time here and Im happy we gave it a second try! First, Matt answered the phone to make our reservation. He squeezed us in which I was happy about because we were meeting friends! (Two other places we tried didn't even answer the phone). So the first time we went, we weren't thrilled with the experience or the wine :( I honestly had no intention to return until my gf said I can't get us in anywhere else so I was like ok. Well we're we pleasantly surprised at how much we liked the red wines! We are picky about wine too. I'll say it, we are wine snobs. Well we liked it so much we bought wine to enjoy at home. Amazing wine, too bad that their club membership is lacking (1 member and 1 guest included in a tasting) I have never experienced that in any wineries! Maybe they should realize that this is how they gain exposure and increase clientele. this Is a social event! Maybe a skilled marketer can explain this to management! read more

This is the best winery in the Sierra foothills. All the wine is great and the service is excellent. We visit here as often as we can. We have purchased cases and cases of wine from them. The Syrah is my favorite. Love Grace Patriot Wines!!! read more
