Went in to resolve the question-what's better: A Double-Double from In-and-Out in the USA or a Trucker Burger at Burgastronomy in Adelaide? We decided to go to Burgastronomy in North Adelaide because all the restaurants around us were closed on a Sunday evening in downtown Adelaide-the Fringe be damned. So we hopped into the car and made a dash to North Adelaide, where you can almost always find several options for chow. We were in two groups, and when the first of us arrived we had the place almost to ourselves (an uncommon occurrence, as they are usually packed when we drive by). Although this is an order-at-the-counter establishment, we we were greeted by the staff who gave us some recommendations on the bottled cider and the burgers. We said we were waiting for someone and just wanted ciders to start-they suggested getting some sweet potato chips (fries) while we waited. That turned out to be a great suggestion. We finally got around to ordering, and after a short wait our beautiful burgers were delivered. The Trucker Burger includes egg and bacon. The egg was fried to perfection, gently oozing yolk at the first bite. The burger was large, but well prepared. Unlike some "gourmet" burgers where the meat is more like a meatball than a patty, the Burgastronomy burgers have a nicely shaped patty so you can eat the sandwich without dislocating your jaw in the process. So was the Trucker Burger better than a Double-Double from In-and-Out in the USA? Hard to say--they are so different in concept. But, there is no doubt that the Trucker Burger is a great sandwich--probably the best burger I've had in Adelaide. And you can't get a cider with your burger at In-and-Out! This place certainly has most of my heart with the taste and quality of food BUT when I have to compare the burger to, what is a clear 10/10 from Burger Theory, I was left disappointed, only slightly. SIGNATURE BURGER (added bacon) These babies are quite big. You get a plain big sesame seed bun. Which I felt was like the kind you buy at Coles/Woolies. It's hard to say I like it when I prefer the brioche style variety. The meat was beautifully juicy but lacked any charred flavour or seasoning, very bland. This made my burger sloppy when mixed with the mayonnaise and tomato sauce. Speaking of the tomato sauce, this also didn't get my tastebuds singing. It was almost like a napolitana pasta sauce. Here is where the place redeemed itself. SWEET POTATO FRIES ohh you sweet delectable crunchy little flavoursome morsels!! I've had sweet potato fries before but these bad boys just rock my socks off. They were slightly oily but i didnt care! Superb flavour and crunch and with powers combined (dipping in to the zingy mayo and chipotle BBQ sauce), wow. Wow. Wow! Visited Burgastronomy without a firm idea of what I was in for. First impressions were that this isn't as professional a setup as Nordburger/burger foundry etc. The art on the wall is a bit tacky but the furniture was typical burger joint. I ordered the hot burger with chips and after being told that it would be 9/10 heat, opted for the xtra hot sauce... So I was expecting to struggle eating it and possibly regret my decision half way through. Before I get to the heat rating I'll give the burger a going over. The bun was your typical brioche that collapses half way through if you're not careful, but still nice - think Nordburger, burger republic etc etc. Meat was medium which was nice. Everything else was fresh, but nothing too interesting or unusual. Back to the chili. So they use a chipotle sauce which I have a very similar sauce to at home that I bought from chili mojo and it's rated 5/10. This sauce had a touch more heat than that, so as far as heat rating goes, I'd say 6/10 max. Was a little disappointed to be honest, but I know everyone has different ratings. It would be good to have an "ultra hot" burger or something that is a challenge to eat. Also, I'm not even that tough when it comes to chili. My 9/10 sauce at home absolutely knocks me on my arse so if they had a real chili fiend come in and order their Xtra hot burger, they would be laughed at. read more

I am yet to find a burger joint that I can give full marks but by no means does that mean that they aren't good. Quite the opposite in fact - there are too many great burger bars around Adelaide that I am yet to find a favourite - Burgastronomy just makes the decision ever harder! I selected the trucker - i was won over by the idea of caramelised onion and bacon. My partner in crime made a very wise choice with a chicken burger - a tasty treat with amazing southern fried chicken, I definitely had order envy. We selected some sweet potato and regular fries because, as usual our appetites were bigger than our stomachs. We made room for it all though because when food is this darn tasty, it would be a crime not to! The great thing was the delicious flavour but for me, the bun let this beast down. I am a big fan of the sweet and soft bun at Chuckwagon and the 'shinny' bun at Relish'd so this kinda bread wasn't my style - but hey, each to their own! I have been back repeatedly now and I'm still raving about this place to anyone that will listen. Ive commented on the burgers in the past and my opinions haven't changed, they are as good as ever. This time I will comment on the beer list, and what a list it is. The selection is small and you probably wouldn't of heard of many of them, but they are great. An update on my previous review: We went back here recently and this time I had The Hot One (medium heat) and a side of potato chips with chipotle BBQ sauce. Maybe it's that they've settled in and found their groove, or maybe it's just that their chipotle BBQ sauce is magical, but this time I was much more WOWed by my meal. The first time I came here I ordered the "Free Bird", which although decent, was not special enough to make me come rushing back. It would be great to say that fate intervened, but actually it was more a case of laziness and convenience when I needed somewhere to take a friend for lunch. After being disappointed last time, but still confined by my "fussitarian" dietary requirement (there is an odd and somewhat inconsistent list of things I don't eat) I decided to be bold and try the Hot Bacon Bird. Aside from being made better by bacon (it works for all food, try bacon on Weet-Bix or with your next dolphin sandwich) the chicken was juicier with a crispy coating. But the real star was the chipotle BBQ sauce. So im from outta town and staying down the road and this was the first place i walked by, the shop sign led me in. The burgers are quite large especially the patties, but excellent value for money. The fillings are piled high and fresh so it can get a little messy when you are eating but well worth it. There are also plenty of sides to accompany your meals. I highly recommend the corn fritters and the sweet potato fries. There are also a selection of condiments, which the staff are more than happy to help you pick one if you are indecisive like me. Went here pretty much on a whim for a Sunday lunch with a group of friends and didn't have any problem finding a table. The service was very fast, and the burgers were awesome! These are proper must-hold-with-two-hands burgers, unlike some of the 'in' burger bars around Adelaide. The only thing I could fault is that our plates weren't cleared for a good half hour after we finished eating. Not a big deal but it's just a bit annoying to have to keep checking whether your elbows are in leftover burger filling when you're having a conversation. I thought that the price was excellent for the burgers, at $13 for the most expensive one (plus you can add fillings such as egg or bacon for a quite reasonable $1 each). My last two visit have shown a noticeable decline in quality. The bread (which they championed earlier on) has changed, and was essentially a tough kinda cheap white bun. The burgers the last two times I went had the quality of burgers I hate the most when you take your first bite and a waterfall emerges from the back of the burger with liquid pouring onto the plate. You're then left with a soaked plate and a conundrum of whether to put your burger down in it (hence soggy burger) or just hold onto it. It is a pickle and no mistake. Anyway felt I should update. Look! I'm going to lay down some truth, if you want the best chicken burger in Adelaide stop by burgastronomy. This is the second time that me and my partner have eaten there but the first time that I have experienced the chicken burger. The first time we went I had one of the beef burgers and I enjoyed it but I've since had better. As a person who normally sticks to beef in my burgers I tried the chicken due to a recommendation from my girlfriend. I now recommend to all of you to live a full life and eat a deep fried slice of heaven in the form of the freebird. Bad Hygiene I've been here a few times as I think they are one of the better burger joints in Adelaide. I have been quite skeptical about their food hygiene (as I dislike places where food handlers do not where gloves) and my skepticism was confirmed today when one of the male staff picked up a burger bun that dropped on the floor, put it on the side cloth (the pretty burger maker usually wipes her hand with) slices it then put it through the toaster! I've always tried to look past the fact that the cashier who handles $$ also handles food with her bare hands, but this is the last straw. (ps. the drinking glasses near the counter smelled like some kind of cleaning agent too). If i'm seeing what i'm seeing at the front counter, I wonder what happens at the back end in the kitchen.... Hmmm well I thought I'd try this place on my lunch break. The portabello mushroom burger was not really what I was expecting it to be like. I had it in my head it might be like the vego mushroom burger you get at Gilles St markets, or the portabello mushroom dish from Cliché exhibition, but the filling was not comparable. It was tasty, but too much Mayo. The sweet potato chips weren't bad , a bit salty, but they accidentally gave me tomato sauce instead of chipotle, which I only realised once I was halfway back to work. Burgastronomy on O'Connell st is close to the city, well set up, very warm and inviting. A mate and I had the cheeseburger and some fried chicken. The burger was succulent and tasty, meat was well cooked medium rare. I think they think their burgers are out of this world at burgastronomy. Not really sure on the meaning behind the name. Hmm. I had the signature burger, a side of sweet potato chips, and an expensive $14 cider. All up that was $28 for dinner! The cider wasn't worth the $14. It's not about the cider though. The burger was very oily and the meat was quite fatty. The best thing was the sweet potato chips. They were delish. Also I have to say on a hot day, the aircon doesn't work unless you are sitting in the direction of the vents. So you end up sitting there sweating eating a burger with meat sweat...haha. I've been here several times in the past couple of years and I really like this place, they do great burgers. The chicken is my favourite, they definitely know how to fry chicken. The Trucker is also really good. But the sweet potato chips are the best! Only criticism is that the chips are sometimes a bit too salty but staff are happy to make them without salt, so it's not a huge issue. read more
