We last visited Nanstein Castle quite a long time ago. As we found ourselves in the area again we decided to stop by for old times sake and see how restoration was going. Well, sadly, we showed up on the one day of the week the castle was closed. However, we were able to stop into the Burgschanke for a bite to eat which was a completely unexpected stop as this 'castle tavern' was not here the last time we visited! We were approached as soon as we entered and asked if we had a reservation. Oh, no. Turned out OK as they had two tables available at the moment. Yea! The staff speak English, the menu is in English so no worries if you don't speak German. We had a light lunch of beef broth with bone marrow balls and a side salad. They also have wursts and other German fare you would expect. But we don't have huge appetites so this lunch suited us very well. First the soup. A rich, dark beef broth. A little salty, and very flavorful. The bone marrow balls remind me of matzah balls. This was an all together satisfying starter. It came with a small loaf of bread. Soft on the inside, crusty on the outside. A very nice, warm accompaniment to the soup. Next, the salad. We had been in Germany over two weeks at this point and none of the meals we had up to this point really reminded us of those we remembered from when we lived in Germany. That's fine. Pallets change. Chefs like to experiment. It's all good. But this salad! This is the salad we remember. The mix of greens. The salad dressing. This folks is a German salad. I know you might not care, but I am so happy to have found that taste again. It was fresh and flavorful and exactly what we needed. A hotel is located a little ways down the hill from the castle. Some people parked there and walked up. We drove all the way up to the castle and found parking on site. You can also walk all the way up to the castle or ride your bike on one of the many trails crisscrossing the property. The ambiance here is chill, fun and very German. The staff are friendly, professional and easy going. Restrooms are down a hall at the back of the restaurant. Remember to call in a reservation! You should definitely stop by for a meal. read more

Restaurant that is on the top of the mountain near a hiking trail, and near the remains of a historic castle. I honestly was going to leave - since sometimes German food is kind of hit or miss for me, yet the waitresses went out of her way to convince me to state and helped me pick something that she thought I would enjoy, which I did - the portesteak or something like that. This restaurant is at top of the town by a castle, theres is plenty of parking here so driving up is no trouble. The staff is pretty nice and friendly and they were great accommodating our party as we were a large party in the times of social distancing. They speak a fair amount of English and they only take CASH, as well as only EUROS. The decor is so nice and the outside sitting here has an overview of the town so sitting outside is a great idea, specially during the sun set hours, it looks super pretty here. ELSSASSER FLAMMKUCHEN- the second word on the name of this dish kind of means flat bread ( this is not a direct translation) but after ordering this that is what I got. the flat bread is large enough to be a meal even tough it is at the appetiser menu. I loved it and tasted pretty nice and fresh. To pay we had to just walk up to the exit and pay before walking out. this is a perfect place to have a meal or a drink after visiting the case. read more

Recommend. I really enjoy taking the hike up here when the weather is nice and enjoying a beer on the patio with my dog. I also think the food is pretty good too! I have ordered enough orders of the schnitzel and fries to be at least 30% schnitzel now. I'm also tried a salad and one of their sausage dinners. I enjoy the food. It's not high brow by any means, but it's yummy and fairly priced. And you get to watch the airplanes take off and land while you have a bite and a beverage. Went up here on a snowy Sunday evening (maybe 6p?). The place is small but very comfy and was warm with low lighting. There was only one other table with people on it. Service was a bit slow, which is odd given there were only my son and I, plus another table. The server didn't seem to want to be bothered by us, she was busy cleaning the bar area. She was nice enough, though, once she made time for us. The food, however, came relatively quickly. We both ordered the schnitzel and it was very good, pretty decent portion, not huge but satisfying. Glühwein not on the menu but was available when I asked for it. There isn't much parking up there and the road is windy and can be icy in snow but totally worth the trip! If I'm ever in Landstuhl again, this is on the "must go to" list. I'll get a designated driver since it's not likely a good idea to drink and drive that road back down. read more

Casual atmosphere, great homestyle cooking and wonderful conversation. The owner's son took care of us in this family-run business. He spoke English well so we enjoyed asking him so many questions about Germany. The schnitzel and beefsteak were delicious. We also tried the French fries and the panned-fries potatoes. Yummy! This was a recommendation from a friend and we were not disappointed. This place has a beautiful few of Landstuhl and is just outside the castle. This was my first German meal and it was close to Ramstein AFB. You can't beat watching the sunset with some good German beer, sausage, and a mountain of sauerkraut. read more

We live right down the street from this place and we go probably twice a month. This is the best German place in the area hands down. Great traditional German dishes and their specials are always great. Surprisingly good seafood as well. If venison is being offered jump on it, it's outstanding. The prices are reasonable and the the service is good usually. The setting couldn't be any better. Sit outside in the summer or next to the fire in the winter. It took forever to get out drinks( a beer and a water) and after ordering food she never checked if we'd like to have more drinks after ours been finished already. This was our absolute favorite place to eat and drink during my whole time in Germany. The food is absolutely spectacular!! The fries are always perfect. German beer on tap, so of course you can't go wrong there! The best part, you are on top of a mountain (The Melkerei) overlooking the entire valley below. You can see the Airbase, Ramstein Village, almost to Weilerbach. Also, there is a freaking medieval castle right behind you!!!!. Live in Landstuhl Atzel nearby and the Burg is our staple restaurant. It's easily accessible by road but also by hiking path from Landstuhl. It takes us about 30 mins from the house with 2 young kids. The view over town and over base is awesome. Very good schnitzel as well as other typical German dishes. The best during good weather when you can sit outside. Plenty of seating and space and they're always nice to our kids, bring small kids cups. If you sit toward the outside, the kids can plan in the area near the castle where you can keep them in sight from the tables. Also good for sitting inside during worse weather. The only reason this place doesn't get one star is because of the view. The food was too salty, the people running it were indifferent that we were there and it isn't the easiest place to find. All in all, don't waste your time unless you are looking for an awesome view. read more
