Lael's Romantic Hobbit Hole retreat was perfect! We stayed 2 nights. It was half way point of our road trip to Nevada City. It is spotlessly clean, neat, and tidy and has many great amenities. On our travel to see friends in California we stopped at Burrowdale Inn! We were intrigued by the Hobbit style rental rooms and the lure of gourmet breakfasts. We also ordered the charcuterie board for dinner the night we arrived. It was glorious! The breakfasts were truly 5 star chef made! Still thinking about those meals days later. The rooms were so well appointed and absolutely comfortable! Wood stove for winter and AC for the summer months. Sitting outside taking in the view when the temperature cooled in the evenings and coffee in the mornings was serene. This place is for quiet and calm. We had the most wonderful stay at Burrowdale, a truly magical experience! No need to be a hobbit fan or a Lord of the Rings fan, the experience is of it's own making! We were greeted by our gracious host when we arrived and shown to our hole. We were absolutely stunned! The hole was gorgeously decorated, fully appointed with every amenity imaginable and cozy as can be! We quickly settled in and strolled around outdoors before the sun went down, the entire area is just phenomenal! We were the only guests there so it was divinely peaceful and felt like we truly were in a little hobbit village! So I have been a LOTR fan for many many years, I remember standing in line for the midnight showings when I was younger for the premieres. I turned 40 today, and for my b-day weekend my wife and kids booked this wonderful spot. It's in the middle of the country, and you have to drive up a small road to the homes. As you pull in you can see the four hobbit homes, we had the privilege of staying in the Red Door home, which brandishes the flag of Rohan as you enter. The rounded double doors open up to a new world of LOTR, details are extraordinary, you can literally immerse yourself in all the decor. There is a huge king size bed in the bedroom, very comfortable. The Hobbit monopoly and other board games, of course the Books are there for you to read as well. The wood burning stove was awesome, kept the whole place warm and cozy. It rained the entire two days we were there, so we couldn't go out and explore the property, but hearing the wind and rain while we cozed up to a book or movie was perfect. I wanted to relax for my day, and I did just that. Breakfast is brought each morning between 9-930, and I give the food alone a 5/5. You can tell the owners really take their breakfast seriously, the presentation alone is great and the food tasted amazing. A huge plus. We were able to stop at a grocery store in town to stock up on fruit/snacks/drinks, since we did have a fridge and freezer along with a microwave to use. I wish we would have came in spring, but it is what it is. The overall experience and immersing ourselves in the world of J.R. Tolkien was an experience of a lifetime, who knew this was just a few hours away from us. Recommend highly for any fans of the books or movies...I know I felt relaxed staying here. read more

This place is so cool!!! If you are a lord of the rings fan this is a must. I stayed for three nights in the dog friendly Merry room. The room was so beautiful, larger than I expected and the most comfortable bed! The property is large and beautiful. The breakfasts each morning were some of the best I have had even compared to fancy brunch spots. The owner is very nice and you can tell he really cares about making a nice experience for his guests. The whole experience was so special. I highly recommend if you are ever in the area or even as a destination. It's a reasonable drive to Burney Falls, Shasta, and McCloud park. I can't wait to go back. read more

Such a treat for LOTR fans! My wife and I loved every second of our stay. The host is so thoughtful with a great kitchen, chilled beer glasses and even writing in elvish on the bed for a cool touch! The place is so clean, the shower is huge and amazing AC if it's hot, they really go above and beyond to keep you comfortable. We booked this inn to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, since we have always been Tolkien fans. Three days and nights in this incredible place were far too short! Not only could we stay in a very authentic and gorgeously appointed Hobbit house, we had ideal Spring weather in a setting of snow-topped mountains, rolling green meadows, trilling birds, wildflowers, and freshly-budded trees. The friendly hosts treated us to unexpected comforts and the most delicious Second Breakfasts delivered to our door each day. It was tranquil, serene, and unforgettable! The area around the hobbit holes is so wonderful and well designed. The spaces are well insulated and quiet. The host Lael is very helpful. I love the attention to detail in each of the spaces. My husband and I stayed here on the way back up to Oregon. We love the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and so the idea of staying in a Hobbit hole appealed to us. And before you think this is some cheesy Hobbit knock off, let me set you straight. These are amazing structures with all the conveniences, a beautiful setting and so many Hobbit/LOTR touches. A big circle door, a circular doorway into the bedroom, a lovely, well stocked kitchenette (larger than normal mini fridge with freezer which they stock with some water, flavored sparkly water, yogurt and half and half for your coffee) microwave, sink, counter and lovely mugs, dishes, silverware, pour over coffee maker and coffee with instructions and an electric kettle to boil water for tea or making coffee, and more. There is a wood burning stove in the living room which they will light for you. There is a firepit and chairs and a table and chairs outside to enjoy the beautiful setting around you. The bed is very comfortable. The bathroom has a large shower with a choice of rain shower or hand held shower and super-cushy towels. Very comfortable and cute chairs in the living area. There is a mini-split system for heating and AC if you prefer that. They put a basket of snacks on the counter and the breakfast.....OMG. It was delicious!!!! And beautiful! Baked eggs with mushrooms and fresh thyme with sliced, wonderful artisan bread to eat them with and perfectly cooked bacon. Then a dish of baked apple and pear with cinnamon and their boozy, bougie whipped cream topped with some candied nuts and fresh berries. The breakfast changes and you can inform them of dietary restrictions. There are paths through the surrounding 40 acres and we went for a short walk after we ate dinner (we brought that with us). The stars are amazing as the light pollution is so much less prevalent there. You can really imagine you are in the Shire. Everything was so beautiful and geared to giving you a cozy, pampered stay. The hosts were friendly and easy to communicate with. It was a magical, lovely place to stay and we will be back. read more

Just got back from a stay at this wonderful B&B! I can't say enough about the entire experience! if you have ever wanted to put yourself into a hobbit shire, here it is. every Elvin detail from the round entry door, grasses on the roof, pebbled wandering path, round windows, Tolkien books and even second breakfast! The most comfortable bed I have ever slept in, plush cozy robes, big chairs perfect for curling up with a good book from the shelves, chairs outside to take in the 40 acres of country view, and a fire pit. there are paths to wander, so many birds and chipmunks. at night, I happened to step outside and had never seen so many stars in my life...I was awestruck. Our visit to Burrowdale Inn was absolutely wonderful. The spring flowers were in bloom along with the dell, just below our cottage, being as green and vibrant as could be after winter rains. The Trinity Mountain range gave us a panoramic westerly view, running north to south. The location feel was about as close to The Hobbit movie setting without having to travel to New Zealand. Lael & Amy thought of every convenient detail for guests. We ordered the Shire-cuterie Board and it was over the top. The quality of the board was enough food to keep us fed both nights of our stay. The Hobbit breakfasts were also enough to accommodate first and second breakfast needs, and elevenses! Both meal presentations were of culinary excellence. When we arrived at Burrowdale, we were on our way home from a glam PNW treehouse experience which, though it surrounded us in astounding natural beauty, left us wanting...for proper food! Not long before, the inn had been squirreled away in my favorites as a potential destination, and then suddenly while planning our return route I had the good fortune of booking the last room available! I was filled with magic and wonder as I stepped into the space. Everything about this cottage was so sweet and special. There were drinks and teas and snacks available, which are amazingly helpful when you're on the road. Then in the morning, they prepared my favorite second breakfast (not my second favorite!) of our weeklong trip. It was extraordinary in taste, quality, and presentation. Such thoughtful accommodations in so peaceful a place. I could see myself booking a week there just to read the books and eat the food. Fan of LOTR or not, anyone decent should be able to appreciate this slice of fairy tale cottage life. AND you can bring your dog! What's not to love? From the grounds to the design of the Hobbit Holes, you can see the dedication and passion Lael & Amy have towards their craft. We spent three nights here and our stay was nothing short of magical. Very peaceful tranquil setting. Lael and his wife, Amy, were there to greet us upon our arrival. They were the perfect hosts, giving us space when we wanted it, but also help when we wanted it. Lael even brought over a baby snake he had found to show my 3-year old daughter. She was delighted! The food was scrumptious. The beds were the comfiest I've ever slept in. Lael built fires for us in the stoves upon request, and even helped us out with a bonfire in the fire pit on our last night. We went to the nearby Sundial bridge/ garden/ museum on our first day, but you could easily spend all your time just relaxing and taking in the beautiful scenery nearby. A must for any fan of "The Lord of the Rings" or if you're looking for a peaceful stay in the country. read more

I sent my mother here for her birthday. To explain the standards set here, my mother is a FAN. She had the first edition books, which were destroyed fifty years ago along with her handmade wedding dress by a leaky rental when she was newly wed. She still holds a grudge about the books. I checked in on her today. She had nothing but glowing things to say about the property, the owners and the food. Her bed had elven script drawn into the blanket when she got there. The shower, while not thematically appropriate was amazing, spacious and wonderfully pressured. The hobbit hole was surprisingly spacious, and had a number of appropriately themed items, including Hobbit board games, books, and a beautiful, hand carved chess set. My biggest concern was the "Shire-cuterie" board, which was a bit expensive, but apparently it included two different courses, and was large enough and fresh enough to justify the cost easily. Mom's only regret was the breakfast menu contains a weeks worth of different items, and she was only going to be there for two days. Over all, definitely worth the money for a non fan, and perfect for a fan. Well done, Burrowdal Inn! read more

My husband and I stayed for 5 nights in May 2024. It was a quiet, peaceful stay with an abundance of food. Second breakfast was delicious, creative, and copious. We also got the $100 "shire-cuterie" board, which had an amazing selection of fruit, meats, cheese, crackers, etc. Between the 2nd breakfast and the shire-cuterie board, we did not need to eat any other meals during our stay. All the amenities were well-thought out and nicely coordinated. The hosts were readily available for even the smallest ask, but also gave us plenty of privacy. My husband uses a walker, and without being asked, Lael helped us get our suitcases to the Hobbit House when we arrived, and also to our car when checking out. I heartily recommend Burrowdale Inn.
