The Desmond House was a welcomed respite for my husband and me. And Greg was the perfect host. He gave solid recommendations for our dinner in town. And he went out of his way to accommodate my gluten free status. The house itself is quiet and peaceful with lovely plants. Although we didn't take advantage of it, he has created a zen type garden in the back for anyone to relax and read. The soap/shampoo products he stocks the bathroom with are non toxic and natural. For those of us who are sensitive to perfumes, it was appreciated. read more

The accommodations are lovely - the pictures don't do it justice. The bed is very comfortable. The inn keeper is very friendly and offered good suggestions for local restaurants and sights. All in all, it was a great stay! They don't make a big breakfast like many B&Bs do, but the continental breakfast was ok. Fresh fruit, pastries, and coffee is about all I could eat after the huge dinner we ate at Gironda's Italian restaurant last night anyway. This is not your typical b&b where the innkeepers sit with you and cook for you. Gregg is definitely friendly, but he is also quiet and stays to himself. read more

Greg was the perfect host--he responded to my on line inquiry within a few hours, he communicated with me as the date got closer, and he helped me celebrate my husband's 50th birthday road trip following the Dead & Company down from Eugene to Mountain View by putting out a few birthday decorations. Redding was a great midway stopping point for us and we didn't want your usual hotel/motel. Greg's place is very private, there are interesting things to look at, several places to sit and hang out or read a book, the bed was super comfy, the shower and bath soap were spot on, and the fruit bowl and pastry in the morning along with some good conversation was a great way to wrap up our overnight stay. I'm a picky traveler; one who can't relax into a space without clean and tidy and who finds comfort and joy from charmingly cozy nooks that wink at me to sit for a spell. The Desmond has all that and a courtyard that invites me to sit and absorb its sunny vibes popping through the pergola. In mornings, I started out in the front living area of the house (It feels like the perfect spot to plan the day), moved on to the kitchen nook for coffee and muffin, and finished my afternoon and mealtime around the glass fire pit...it nestled me in to relax and reflect on the day. On the first night? Sipped a shot of Milagro with my pizza and mingled with Greg, the owner of Desmond. A wonderful, restful, fun old house. Small and intimate should be in the description. Lots of fun old antiques used in the decorating. For being near old downtown it is very quiet at night. There are views of the river, but the house is on a bluff. The food offered was fresh and beautifully ripe! If the need arose this would be a consideration for a return visit! read more

I spent the night here as I was passing through Redding on my way to Portland. It's a lovely place! The house was beautiful, and within walking distance to the Sundial Bridge. I slept extremely well, since the place was so quiet. The owner, Greg, was very friendly and had great recommendations for restaurants in the area. This seems like a random observation, but lighting was wonderful...the owner collects lamps, and every surface has some very cool lighting implement. read more

Stayed here overnight on the way up to Mt. Shasta. We arrived late and left early so we weren't here too long but while we were here our stay was very comfortable. The house is gorgeous and very well maintained. The backyard was so peaceful and tranquil. There was a huge old wine barrell that Greg said is a sauna- very cool! Desmond house features two rooms, each with private bathroom. There are several couches, indoor and outdoor seating areas, including at least 13 chairs in the house. One of the highlights is the wine cellar which is nicely appointed with wood panels and a built-in stereo with iPod dock - a lovely way to spend a relaxing evening. In addition to the seating areas the backyard hosts a wine barrel sauna, and a jacuzzi tub - another way to spend a relaxing evening. Breakfast was simple and filling - fruit salad (fresh and delicious), bagels, pastry, coffee, and tea (many varieties available). Yes, the inn keeper Greg does live in the back of the house and yes, he is a friendly, flexible, helpful, and loquacious fellow. Greg had helpful suggestions, books, and magazines available about hiking, dining, and activities in the local area. We had the entire house to ourselves (i.e. the other room was not rented) for a couple of days so it felt quite private and luxurious. This would be a good place to rent for two couples traveling together. Across the street from the Sacramento River. Walking distance from the botanical gardens, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, and down town Redding. Easy access to/from I-5. Approximately half an hour drive to Lake Shasta, and one hour drive to Castle Crags state park. read more

after we left it took us almost an hour to decide not to drive back to the desmond house and give him a piece of our minds. yes. the owner greg has a key system so you can come in whenever you like. yes. it is cute. what the owner fails to tell you is that he LIVES there. in that silent house. right above the adorable room where you think you have privacy. when we got there at 2am we were met by a charming parking area. the gate was locked. we stumbled around in the bushes to get to the front of the house and let ourselves in to the house, which was pitch black. again. we didn't know the owner was there. enough said. the next morning we awoke to a "continental breakfast" that consisted of four doughnuts and a pot of coffee. why do we need a set table and plates for a doughnut, you ask? we didn't know either. after he offered to let us pour our own coffee and heat up our own doughnuts in his microwave, we spent a solid hour listening to the gristly details of greg's nasty divorce, his decision and execution of investing in the bustling bed and breakfast market in Redding and his tumultuous life changes including an ever-changing teaching saga and becoming a part time massage therapist. then he pointed us in the right direction of the nearest Starbucks. god bless my fiance. he saved that man's life. read more

Stayed here awhile back for business trip in the Brooks room although the bed mattress could be more comfortable. Greg the innkeeper was very hospitable. Loved the hot tub & the outdoor patio. Very highly recommended. I called Desmond house 12 minutes prior to arrival. My husband and had a long drive from Vancouver CA and needed a place to crash. I found this place on my cell and read through the 5 star reviews and great testimonials. Greg welcomed us when we arrived, a gracious host. This is a special place. It was just what I needed. Peaceful and serene atmosphere. Greg has put his heart and soul into this place. What a gem of a place, with a wonderful host, Greg, who made us feel very much at home.

This place is fantastic! Three cozy bedrooms one of which is a private loft with its own private balcony. All the rooms are furnished with beautiful antique furniture and the common areas are full of railroad and nautical antiques some of which are repurposed as lamps and other usable items. All of which are museum quality! The inn keeper, Greg, is a wonderful person. Easy going and knowledgeable, greeted us with a warm friendly smile when we arrived as if we'd known each other for years. On our visit we happened to be the only couple for the night and had the house to ourselves so we were able to explore the house and see all the beautiful antiques. The house is fantastic! In the morning we were pleasantly greeted with fresh coffee in the dining area along with fresh fruit and locally made scones. Outside is a peaceful private and comfortable relaxation area.we will definitely be visiting Desmond house again. read more

The house is beautiful.No complains on that. Jacuzzi was fun.Spend good time in that after a long hike to Burney falls. But i have little complaints abt Greg,Before i booked our stay there i mentioned Greg we have our 3 yr old daughter with us,and we are here to celebrate our anniversary. We were here at 5 PM evening tired after hike.We were in real need of coffee,when we asked him if we could make some coffee he said, we are all set for tomorrow morning,Indirectly NO...for coffee. Next morning he didn't arrange any breakfast for my daugter.Too bad.It was not a surprise or i didn't mention him before i booked the room.He just got 3 bagels 3 bananas and couple cupcakes for me,my husband and the other lady who was there in the other room.He just left a small bowl of fruits for my little one. My daughter was having fun in Jacuzzi at 10:20AM in the morning,she was almost done and she was about to hit the shower, when he was busy with a client for some massage service,he came out of the room and said us check out time is 11:00 AM. I really loved the house,but his behavior towards the kids was RUDE!! read more

We recently stayed twice at The Desmond House Bed & Breakfast during a quick turnaround trip between Seattle and Oakland. Our experience both times was the best we have ever had at any hotel or B&B. Desmond House itself is like stepping back in time to the turn of the century as the house dates to circa 1904. The house has been lovingly restored by its owner, Greg, who has provided modern convenience within the original framework of the house. Greg has furnished it with antique and vintage furniture as well as a marvelous collection of light fixtures and unique collectibles. The beds were very comfortable and the shower strong and hot. The jungle-like gardens, complete with bamboo 'forest', provide a secluded hide-away under the pergola illuminated with a jet-engine-turned-light-fixture and other original surprises. But what really made our stay special was the warm and generous hospitality of our host. We spent both nights in the garden under the pergola drinking wine and chatting on all sorts of topics. Since we had a keen interest in the antiques and artworks, Greg was more than happy to share the inside stories on everything. It was a truly delightful stay. read more
