I've been coming to Burtons for quite some time. It is a lovely place with, I kid you not, the best chicken tenders this side of Old Town. Please do me a favor and next time you find yourself in this lovely corner of Old Town, order chicken tender (plain) with a side of Honey Mustard. You. Will. Not. Regret. It. I feel that what gives this place such a personality is it's bartenders. Now you might think to yourself: "it's a dive bar, I only order my drinks and move on." But even then, you have such amazing bartender as Agnis, Bella, Beth and Alisha. These are a handful of what Burtons has to offer. Sure anyone can crack open a Bud Light for you, but not only will they do so, but they make this place feel like home. Do yourself a favor and stop by this wonderful establishment. Be respectful and this place will open their doors for you. We all want a place to get a late night drink, a night cap, as you will. This is the place to go. Stopped in here for a drink. The bartender checked our ID's and then literally (and not in a hyperbolic sense) threw them at us. The beers we got were flat and tasteless. It's like they tapped a keg from 1995. Awful. Couldn't finish. To top it off, a belligerent older female bartender came up to us and verbally berated us. When she asked where we were from, and we said DC, she said, quote, "Are you f***ing Trumpkins?" No, but mind your business. She also asked us to watch her purse, and when we didn't immediately agree, she cussed us out. We left. Avoid this place. Awful. I love dive bars. This is a veritable anus of flat alcohol. WOW. This review could be pages long, these jerks were so awful. First, the waitress/bartender/whatever asks us for ID. I give her my ID with no complaints or anything, and still she has to say something to me along the lines of "uh, yeah, we're a tavern, NOT a restaurant. I need to see some ID." Bear in mind that this was AFTER I gave her my ID. Clearly, she just wanted to have a bad attitude. Then, we all order food. We all get our food, except for two of our friends who ordered pizza. It says the pizza will take 20 minutes, which is fair. We were there for 45 minutes, long enough for everybody to get their food, eat it, pay for it, have another beer, and want to leave, and still the pizzas didnt' come out. My friend asked for her money back because we were all leaving and the food still wasn't there. Instead of being a professional with decent customer service, the lovely bar wench gets her meathead "cook" to come out and try to yell at our friends for wanting their money back. They insisted it had only been 20 minutes and refused to give them their money back (even though my friend had ordered her food, sat with us for one beer, then talked to her mom on the phone for 19 minutes - as recorded by her phone, then sat for another beer, then asked for her money back). Then they give her half the money and say they'll give us the pizzas to go. It literally takes ANOTHER ten minutes for them to give us the pizzas (even though, according to them, they were ready before we were trying to leave). No wonder it takes so long for the pizzas - it takes ten minutes alone to put them in a to go box! During all of this they were just being total jerks, talking to us like we're idiots (both my friend and I manage restaurants, so we know how it should go). They we so condescending and rude, and after we threw the pizzas out and left (I don't want any "special sauce", thanks) they stood in the doorway and told us not to come back. Yeah, because we were totally going to go back tomorrow night if otherwise, they were so awesome. The best part was when the one of the rather portly drunken bar regulars tried to get involved and ended up sounding almost as ridiculous as the employees. All in all, this place was absolutely awful and I would never, ever go back to this hell hole. I wish there were negative stars. read more

This place needs to check on their current employees...employees here are very selective on how they treat their customers. I sad to believe there will always be some type of racism everywhere you go but its worst to actually hear a racist comment be blatantly conducted right in front of you and this is not ok! My dad always told me that nothing good happens after 2am. It depends how you feel about meeting all sorts of random people from bums to hot babes, public make outs amongst strangers, shots of stuff you're not sure what it was, and tone def karaoke with buddies, but if you consider these features as negatives then you'd probably side with my pops. I always knows I've had one too many when I end up at Burton's Place, but I also know I'm in for one hell of a night. I like Burton's because it's laid back & easy to have a conversation in unlike many bars in the area. It's not too expensive, but since it's open until 4 am you'll more than likely leave with an empty wallet (like I did last night). Bartenders are nice, bouncers are sweetie pie's, and the customers are generally a good crowd until after two. Before 2 am Burton Place is an older crowd looking for a quiet, relaxed place to grab a drink, but after 2 look out! Lots of young, drunk, loud, popped collared, hormones raging guys stroll in after 2 looking for that last place to meet a girl to bring home for the night. I'm so sad. I just left this place and was headed there for my friends and my 7th annual old town good Friday pub crawl. In past years this place has been our permanent stop on our crawl - the one place we could count on to be awesome. We walked in here with minds blazing ready to let ourselves loose at Burton Place - where we generally do every year. Unfortunately something had changed since we were here last year. There was an bartendress who we didn't recognize and had never seen. She was curt, which was fine, until she told us to knock it off... (thanks for the spelling edit Joghn Z!) We were simply enjoying ourselves and really excited to be in our favorite bar of our pub crawl, and she - after a friend of mine was acting ridiculous - said "you think you should be acting like this - you're 28". The BARTENDER. SAID THAT! First of all - it's Burton Place at 1 PM on a Friday. WHO GIVES A FUCK!? Second of all, of all the places that you would think would welcome fun behavior from grown ups wouldn't you think Burton would be that place? It has in the past. We have previously fallen in love with bartenders because they laugh with us, not scoff at us. It's not anymore. Unfortunately, it's not. They were supremely rude and judgemental all so their "regular" patrons could smoke cigarettes and watch Stargate SG-1...so sad. I hope future bartenders can take a page from the past and not let this blip on the radar affect Burtons overall awesomeness. Tear. read more

Discovering this place was one of the worst accidents my friends and I have ever made. This bar is staffed with bouncers who kept saying they were off-duty cops. They were also incredibly rude with the women in our group for no reason several times, particularly the "middle of the stairs" gatekeeper douchebag of a bro. Bought 11 shots and was told by the bartender that a $12 tip on a single $75 transaction was "not cool". My girlfriend and two others lost personal belongings in this place and the staff actually LAUGHED when they tried to ask if they could even go upstairs to check. Our best guess was that the staff actually just keeps what they find. Which is an assumption you only make when you're dealing with a bunch of classless assholes that forget they're in the service industry. DO NOT BRING ANYONE TO THIS PLACE. The people don't want to be there, it's obvious. Nothing can more quickly ruin a fun night out than a bunch of ungrateful buffoons running the place. read more

I don't throw out the "What do you do?" card in random conversation but apparently here you don't even have to ask! They are all doctors and lawyers! My bum. All the single ones hang out at Burton's late-night? Doubt to the ful. That being said, Burton's is a typical late night bar with a better than average set up. I don't hate it but I won't be crawling back either. I have never seen my single friend blow off so many guys - very amusing. Burton Place is a niche bar. Its niche is late-night. We've never gone over to Old Town to go specifically to Burton Place. It's solely a follow-up place once Fireplace closes. It generally starts to get packed after 1:30 a.m. when all the 2 a.m. bars have closed. There tends to be an influx of younger people in their 20s once you get closer to 2 a.m. Burton Place is sometimes an okay place for a drink or two late night, but it is essentially a dump. I've been in the place on occasions when they had buckets (plural) on stools catching water raining down from the floors above that was splattering all over the downstairs floor. When you have a plumbing situation as such you know what the bathroom will be like. Right. It kind of makes me cringe that they serve food here. It's an okay place for a late night beer or two. It's 2 1/2 stars, but I'll round up to three stars. read more

Nice cute local pub on a cool street in old town chicago. Came here after the zoo looking for a place to eat and grab a drink for brunch. Stopped in a few places on the street and they were over crowded with drunk people on a Sunday at noon. The place was empty when we came in with just a couple locals and a sweet vibrant bar tender Shelly who openly welcomed us in and to chicago. She said all the food was good and there were so many daily specials. We went for the chicken sandwich and side salad and it was so good. Grilled to perfect. The drinks were strong and tasty. Great drink deals on weekend too. More local business owners kept coming in giving it a real local vibe. All were super friendly and eager to let us know that the food and drinks are good and chill but that late night this place gets crackin. Ha. We will have to try it out on another day for the ribs and burger bar, as well as the late night party. The AC was awesome for a hot day. read more

I am most certainly not a Burton Place regular but I live in the neighborhood and I've wandered into Burton Place on rare occasion per the request of a friend. Overall, it isn't bad, a late night place to get drunkeER and find various types of mischief - if that's what you're in the market for. My last visit was really bad. I tried that new upstairs area after a black tie event. The bartender was the person who claimed to "own" that space. My guess is the owners give him a piece of the profits if he can bring people in, or maybe he was just full of sh**. For the most part, he was an OK guy, friendly and accommodating at first. As the night went on, the "usual suspects" (regulars, likely other bartenders and waitresses, hangers-on in for a free drink) started to show up and they were not too fond of the seemingly fancy-types in their cocktail dresses and tuxedos that were occupying their space. Sure, we were a little loaded, but that should have been par for the course for the Burton Place people. In short, the "usual suspects" mocked and made others feel uncomfortable while the bartender willingly allowed this behavior to take place, if not instigate it. The black-tie people were intoxicated, but the proper way to handle a situation (where you think one might be over-served and inappropriate) is to ask them to leave - not have your friends shout obscenities and shine a flash light on people - as the bartender did. It was a big fail on the part of the Burton Place staff and it embarrassed and enraged the black-tie people nearly causing an odd battle between the hangers-on people and the black-tie people (paying customers). My overall impression, the bartender gives away free drinks to his friends and those are the only people that frequent that top floor. This is bad business because these "usual suspects" go out of their way to make others feel unwelcome. It is that typical, 20-something year old, I'm a bartender and "I hate the man," and this is MY place behavior. My advice to the bartender (if he's even still employed by the establishment) -- keep your obnoxious friends in check, you'll likely make more money and attract more paying customers and less hangers-on. Otherwise, you will likely be out of a job soon enough. read more

If Burton's were only open on weeknights, I could give it 4 stars. Easily. It's a chill dive with lots of beer on tap, great bartenders and friendly patrons. But problems begin when people see the long line to get into nearby Benchmark and decide to detour to Burton's. This crowd of bros and clique-ish chicks all dressed up look (and act) quite out of place. Things take a turn for the worst when Benchmark closes and, to borrow Castro's phrase, flushes its toilets onto Burton's. The whole place gets even more crowded with people who should've gone home. For example, some asshat kicked my stool out from under me because he think I stole it from him. The 2nd floor opens during street fests, but service is atrocious. I don't even want to type about it. Just be prepared to be ignored. read more

You should almost always appreciate a two-story dive bar. Whether the "second" story is a "basement" or an "attic", you just gotta love it. Anyways, ended up making a pit stop here during a trolley party on a Saturday. The bottom level was pretty crowded, but upstairs wasn't bad at all. There was a lot of space, an extra bar, and a pool table. Sure enough, another trolley party meandered their way in with us up there, laaaame :) The service was great and the bartender was nice and not a bitch--how refreshing! (No, I'm not saying all female bartending are bitches, but some are, we all know that). My sprite and vodka came in a big tall glass and she was liberal with the V. Weeee! I've probably spent more late nights at Burton's Place than any other bar in Chicago. I've had some fun nights here, but it tends to get very crowded and extremely smoky. However, when the smoke isn't bothering my eyes I really enjoy the chill atmosphere and it always draws a crowd. read more

When I first walked in here, I was thinking, how depressing. One of the diviest bars that I've been to in Chicago so far. Not that I don't like dive bars, but it was dead inside which made it sad. My friends and I sat outside to enjoy the weather. Our waitress was amazing! 5 stars for her. Very friendly, quick and intuitive. Nice rack also! Yes, I write it as I sees it. This place is an absolute dump, but is exactly what I was looking for in a neighborhood full of pretentious bars vying for the title of top-douche (reigning champ: Benchmark, with Pour House expected to challenge for the belt soon). What you'll find, from my experience: friendly bartenders, cheap drinks, and an overall vibe that feels like college. What you won't: lines out the door, $10 beers, and pretension. If you want to get dressed up with your girlfriends and go dancing, suffice it to say this isn't your spot. I love a good dive, so my review has nothing to do with the actual establishment but rather my overall experience. We were at the Wells St. Art Festival this weekend, and since I was about to explode from drinking beer, i stopped by with two friends to grab a cocktail. I ordered a vodka soda with a lemon, and watched him pour me a weak cocktail (I tended bar for years....) and squeeze two limes in it. I wasn't even that disappointed until he told me that it was $9.00. For crappy well vodka!? The icing on the cake was after I had asked one of the guys behind the bar VERY politely if I could please have a water. He was counting through tickets to see how much money he had made thus far. It was 90+ degrees that day so I didn't think it was a huge deal. His response? "This is a BAR. You should have brought a bottle of water from somewhere else." I thought he was joking around with me at first, but after he ignored me and went back to checking out his takings for the day, I realized he wasn't. I asked him if he was serious, and he said if I really wanted some to grab the pitcher sitting behind the bar and get some myself. I wasn't expecting five star restaurant service, but that was just plain and simple RUDE and could never imagine treating one of my own bar patrons that way. Needless to say, I will never come back to pay $9.00 for a crappy drink and to be treated with such disrespect! read more

The waitress forgot about our table, multiple times. Forgot to ring in our orders, and then before our food came said she had a family emergency, closed our tab and bailed. Then we got to watch her smoke a cig with the other patrons and leave with her boyfriend on a motorcycle. When the food still didn't come, we went inside (we were on the patio) and asked the bartender who said there had never been any food rang in. He rang it in and offered to buy us both a beer, then forgot to do that. I went in another day because I figured a whole bar shouldn't be blamed for a waitress' mistake. The bartender blew us off though and was only social with the regular at the corner. My friends and I decided to use Burton Place as a check-in/meeting place on St. Patty's parade day and were not very impressed. We were in desperate need of some food to sustain our binge drinking and found that their pizza is not even good when you are wasted, to be honest I'm not even sure if you could call it pizza. The drinks are overpriced and the place is understaffed, which makes service rather slow at times. Needless to say, we won't be back. read more

I came here for lunch with my dad. We were barely greeted and given menus. There were more fruit flies at the bar than patrons. Our sandwiches took 1/2 hour and were only delivered because we asked the server to stop reading her RedEye and check on them. The food was mediocre but not bad. If all of this wasn't enough, the server turned on a TV over her head with an open liquor bottle and replace it without cleaning it. I would only ever stumble in here if I were already drunk. This is one of my favorite kinds of bar, dark, a little dirty and open practically till the sun comes up! The first time I went here was on a Thursday night. It was pretty chill until 2am when the bar got packed! That's when my friend informed me that this was "a late night bar." The crowd was super fun and the jukebox was hot. Fast forward to Saturday night, where I was suggesting the spot to a friend. That's when I discovered the other two floors! We are always on the lookout for a late-night bar. A place to go when bar time comes too soon and you just don't want the night to end-- or are in no state of mind to determine what you want. Burton Pace is amongst our regular choices. There is usually good street parking late at night. While the downstairs is WAY too crowded the other 2 floors are usually not so bad. The bartenders are nice. The upstairs reminds me of hanging out in people's basements in high school, there is something comforting about that--At 3 in the morning, at least. Negatives: The bathrooms are small crowded and dirty (I know, I know, what do I expect at 3 in the morning???) Also, it can get uuber crowded on all three floors on occasion and then it just sucks badly. Biggest issue: While I prefer the top floors, I am a (GASP) smoker. And walking down the NARROWEST and STEEPEST steps ever just to get outside for a fix is a little rough. Yes, Ive fallen. Numerous times.. After waiting 15 minutes sitting at the bar without being served food or a drink( which is all I came in for on my lunch break) the bartender decided to ignore me. Right away this bar has a dive bar feel to it. I thought the bartender was okay, not overly friendly even when we tried to talk to him. I ordered a vodka cranberry and it was pretty strong but I think I paid $7 for it. Really? I thought this was a dive bar? The only reason I came here was for some food. I was starving and needed to eat a little something before I started drinking. It was Saturday night and we sat at the bar. There was only 1 bartender! Service was horrible. Not because she was unfriendly, but because she was busy. After about 10 minutes of sitting down we were finally able to order. We ordered the appetizer sampler and a round of drinks. We saw our food come out, but nobody grabbed it and gave it to us. I took matter into my own hands and took my own food. I used to hate to admit it, I would make excuses like, oh it's the only place open this late, and oh they have pub trivia, and well I know the bar tenders because they've all been here for over a decade, but no, it's not the excuses, I love this place. It's just the right amount of grimy, cheap beer, and delicious previously frozen and then microwaved jalapeño poppers that makes me love this place more and more. Burton's was better when I was underage and drinking there. I remember the bartenders there and they were all funny, nice and saucy. It was sorta like cheers in a way- you had the carriage drivers coming in, the lawyers and doctors and they were cool with each other. Then you'd have nights where the yuppies would stream in piles (not such a nice night) but the staff knew the regulars and would take care of you. The sun set. The sun rose. Time moved on. The bar food started to go downhill and the crowd became the most unbearable sort. Can't you go in for a beer and some pub grub and not get chatted up by some shallow individual who seem to think the only thing impressive about them is how much money they make or how loud and testosteroney they can be? No... I'll pass. It's not what it uses to be and that is because it has changed hands and gotten rid of all the good people who used to work there. No Burton's for me. read more

Burtons was the only place in the area that didn't have a line at 11:30pm on Saturday, so our group wandered inside for some quick relief from the cold night. Aside from the toasty temperature, Burtons provided little more. The drinks were weak, the bathrooms were gross, the bar was inaccessible (mosh-pit style line upstairs), and the music could've been better. There's a pool table upstairs to keep you entertained...but other than that it's a completely no frills bar. There's almost no seating, so plan on standing the whole night and getting bumped by drunk people around you when it gets crowded. Do yourself a favor and go out early enough to get into the nicer bars across the street. read more

The perfect old town dive bar. The bartender wasn't too friendly, but was nice for sure. My friend and I were in search of more alcohol after lunching at Bistro Margot's and we ended up sharing a vodka cranberry because it was so strong! The 'tender didn't care that we split a drink, and the crowd was friendly (or drunk) enough to start up a conversation with. For my first time here, maybe not the place to go after sipping red wine, but it sure has a chill vibe with good city prices. I'll go back when I'm in the neighborhood. read more

This is a review of Burton Place as a dining establishment, and not as a bar. We hit the place up in a group of 4 to get some dinner on our way to a show at The Second City. Good drinks, pleasant & helpful service. The Burton Burger was a hit for one of our group, but the Chicken Philly Cheesesteak was a miss - two of us got it, and both of us wondered where the cheese was... it was in there, but we couldn't really taste it. This seems like a nice place to get a pint (which I did) but as a dinner place, it was only so-so. read more
