After freezing most of the meat, we de-thawed another pack of steaks. Pulled out the cast-iron, properly season the steaks, and used a little bit of bacon fat to cook them. We had the exact same affect as when we first bought them. The steaks melted in our mouth again, even after freezing and then bringing the meat to room temperature. This is just the type of place you'd expect to find in the south. Friendly, welcoming service with hearty, home-style food at extremely reasonable prices. The 20-oz porterhouse was seasoned well and cooked to order. The sirloin special lunch was ordered by several in our party and they/we all enjoyed them. These are steaks like you would be able to buy at the store, not 60-day aged steaks that are kept in an expensive, humidity and temperature-controlled atmosphere. The prices, service and atmosphere are the draw here and I think they were top notch. The waitresses were experienced professionals who treated us like we were family. In other words, very well! I don't get to go there often so my visits are spread out over years. It used to be so busy and packed I'd have to drive on by mostly due to not having time. Today I saw the parking lot was mostly empty. So I went in. Kinda dirty compared to before. Had to ring bell to get service. Half an hour later and no steak n fries I realize why it's not busy there anymore. Kinda smells gross, unclean. And and being the only customer waiting half an hour for a meal that takes ten minutes to cook...well that's what happened with the place. Gone downhill to the bottom. Oh and after I gave up I rang the bell to at least pay for the few sips of tea ( got drink after about 15 min) nobody came out. I did see an employee out back smoking as I drove away. read more

Here is a novel thought, why don't we take a butcher shop and add a restaurant to it. You would think that would be the ultimate but looks are deceiving. The specialty item of course is steak but the sirloin was a big disappointment. It looked nice, it was cooked correctly, but it was barely warm when I got it and it had a lot of gristle. There was was a saving grace, the country fried steak was fantastic, the best I have ever had. The mac and cheese was good and the homemade onion rings are great. Our server was friendly and informative and when she told us the desserts weren't made in house, we passed on them. The prices were good, now if we could only get a better cut of meat. read more

This restaurant is not and is not meant to be an upscale place to eat. What it is is a place to get a really good steak at a really good price. Side to go with the steak are plentiful and very good. Lunch-steak prices at lunch and at night are more than reasonable with two people being able to eat for $21...and that price included our drinks. Steaks, hamburgers, Schnitzel, fried okra, fried pickles...and the list goes on...this is the place to go. You won't find friendlier people. Come as you are, one or 20, be comfortable and have a great meal while being able to relax. As Robert S. said, "this is just the kind of place you would expect to find in the south." Yeah, it's that good. Like elsa said Columbus is a big strip mall town. The interstate is littered with nothing but signs of one chain or another. I even asked the guys who live here of a good southern breakfast place and they two places I got were Cracker Barrel and Shoney's...it's like that. I found the place and the parking lot was packed, a good sign and when I walked in the first thing I saw was a case of bloody meat. Oh yeah, it's also a butcher shop. The restaurant is in the other half of the place. It's simple, some brightly colored booths up front and a place with tables in the back. The waitresses were busy-it was the lunch rush but were still friendly. The lunch filet was just...it was heaven. Medium rare tender, flavorful and in need of a dash of salt and pepper. Perfect, the true measure of a good steak is if it doesn't need anything else to bring the flavor of the meat out. The okra was delightful, most of the fried okra I've had was soggy and flavorless. Burt's? fresh and crispy on the inside warm and crunchy on the outside. The fried green tomatoes were the same, fried anything usually kills all the flavor but the vegetables also stood out amidst the breading. Delicious. Dessert? Yeah, of course. The pecan (that's pronounced 'pea-can') pie was oh so warm and delicious so tasteful but not overwhelmingly sweet either. Burt's is terrific and already on my list of places to come back to. Burt's is something of a local institution. As such, you expect it to be a dumpy place in a dumpy area with great food. Well, it's on spot with two of the three. The Wednesday lunch special is a 10oz ribeye and one side and a piece of toast for $7.49. It's lunch, but they serve it until they close at 7:30pm. The dinner portion is a bigger piece of meat with two sides. The steak was pretty legit, especially for 7 bucks, though was overcooked for what I requested. I was super excited about the long list of sides available: mac and cheese, fried okra, fried pickles, mashed potatoes, fries, baked beans, green beans, baked potato, side salad, cole slaw, corn on the cob, white rice & gravy, vegetable medley, and corn nuggets. Too bad the mac and cheese tasted like it came from the refrigerated section of a grocery store (think Bob Evans) and they didn't serve the fried okra with any kind of sauce. The weekly steak specials are on a big board outside and non-steak specials are on a smaller board inside...things like beef tips and rice for $5.50. And if you want to watch monster trucks on TV, this is definitely your go-to place. The decor is so so, the decorations are old, but that's what makes this place special. You order meat, get a huge piece, and enjoy. My Fillet was cooked perfectly and was so delicious and the most inexpensive fillet I ever had. For sides I went with the Mac and Cheese, it was just OK. it took a bit eating used to the white cheese. For $2 it was worth getting the Boston Creme Pie, but that's it... I don't usually write reviews but I felt that it was necessary. I'll keep it short and simple. I had high hopes and expectations as a bunch of my buddies raved about the quality of steaks. What I was given wasn't even close to quality. Take a look at the picture and be awed by the proportion of fat to meat.. Not only was the ribeye mediocre. The fries and okra seemed like they were out for a while. I ain't no food critic but this was unacceptable. As for the overall customer service. It took 30min to get my order. People who came in after left way before I did. The workers had no concern and made no attempt to amend the issue. So all in all, I wasted $18 for a steak and sides that I could've easily made myself. You can take your chances but that was the first and last time I will ever go to Burts. read more

This is the best steak deal you will ever find. The steak specials are $8.49 and feature strip, rib eye, and sirloin. They are huge and tasty, served with the perfect amount of fat on the steak. The place is an actual butcher shop where you can see the meat on display. From the outside this place looks like it might be the nicest place to eat in the ugliest trailer park imaginable but it is clean, the service is good and the food awesome. If in Columbus can you afford not to have a $8.49 steak? For sides we had corn nuggets, weird but good. Fried pickles which were simply delicious. They have 2 desserts each for $2 the boston cream pie and pecan pie. I favored the pecan pie more than the boston cream but both were tasty. Did I mention they were $2! Seriously this is a bargain for good food. Normally I don't go out for steak I'm convinced I can buy better and cook better at home. Holy foodgasm!!! Columbus, GA is what you would call a god-forsaken town. Aside from a tragic cluster of huge stores and awful chain restaurants, there is absolutely nothing else out here to see or do. The only saving grace? Burt's Butcher Shoppe & Eatery. This family-owned establishment is a prime example of southern hospitality. The menu is cheap and extensive. The specials are definitely a good bang for the buck, served with two ginormous sides. Be sure to try the fried green tomatoes (even if you hate tomatoes) and the fried okra. Also, the blackhawk wings are, hands down, THE BEST BBQ wings you will ever have the privilege to enjoy. Trust me. Oh and don't forget to try out some chopped pork, smoked AND bbq'ed with mustard sauce. And one more thing: the filet mignon. There are no words to describe how good it is. I don't care if you've had filet mignon prepared by Eric Ripert or Thomas Keller. Burt's version of this culinary classic is out of this world. Whatever you order, make sure you at least taste the gravy... The desserts deserve their own separate paragraph. Sadly, they were out of pecan pie, but I did sample the boston cream pie and two different chocolate pies. The pies were so good, that even though my stomach was howling in pain and had expanded dramatically from the over-consumption of vast amounts of meat, I managed to finish an entire slice of the best chocolate pie I've ever had!
